Celtic go 7 points clear at the Top

Inverness  Caley 1 -3 Celtic

After a sad old week at home, it was time for a trip to the Highlands.
Could Celtic bounce back after recent setbacks. Could Ronnie roar his young cubs on to victory.
A sodden Inverness awaited to tell the answers to such questions.

Celtic lined up with
01 Gordon
23 Lustig
05 Simunovic
20 Boyata
63 Tierney
25 Johansen
06 Bitton
14 Armstrong
18 Rogic
42 McGregor
09 Griffiths

A torn faced Anthony Stokes once again showed his maturity by Tweeting his unhappiness at having to sit in the Caledonia stand after not being named in the side. With an attitude like that all we can do is say best of luck Tony on your move to some English backwater come January, or maybe back to Hibs if you’re lucky.
The game kicked off and Celtic made a perfect start  in 3 minutes  as  Callum “Just like a new signing” McGregor drove a lovely shot into the net from 20 yards. A great goal with the youngster ( yeah Mr Sutton, I said youngster!) picking up the ball on the half way line and well done to Leigh Griffths and Tom Rogic who helped draw defenders away as the new Kris Commons raced forward with his eyes on the prize.

It all seemed like it was gonna be a fine day, especially when at the next corner,  a goal bound inverness Caley header managed to bounce back off Craig Gordons open chest. Was God going to be with us today? Hmm..time would tell

It may have been the sodden pitch but the Celtic control was lacking at times with some simple passes running out the park and soon Inverness were taking possession with Celtic were looking at playing on the counter with young(Enough!-Ed) Tierney doing his best to drive some extra enthusiasm into the side who were playing a little within themselves as the first half wore on.

To be fair Celtic did have a few more chances in the half with Lustig having a header wide, Simunovic getting on the end of an Armstong cross but the Celts couldnt find that second goal and sure enough, Inverness grabbed the equaliser.

Not for the first time, Celtic lost the ball in the middle of the park and Caley broke forward, a through ball saw Storey manage to stride through Boyata and Simunovic and get a shot on Gordon. The Celtic keeper managed to block but his parry fell back into Storeys path and the striker took his second chance well and calmly controlled the ball and stroke it into the empty net.

After kick off, Nir Boton came close with a long range swerving shot but it was soon time Wee Willie W*nkie Collum to blow for halftime and it was time for Ronnie to get the weans inside for some hot chocolate and warm towels and some motivation magic.

The second half kicked off with both sides having a go and the first flashpoint saw Devine attack Simunovic from a corner but sure enough the referee saw nothing and turned his attention into allowing an early Celtic subsutitution with the disappointing Armstong being replaced by the Ajax secret agent Scott Allan.

As can happen, just as I was thinking “Has Leigh Griffths touched the ball today?” ,  Stefan Johansen picked up the ball in midfield and passed to McGregor who in turn passed to Scott Allan. Allan then played a lovely through ball to the advancing Tierney. The left back ran on and played the perfect back across goal and there was SuperLeigh to slot home. A great goal and it was a joy to the smile on the delighted striker after his disappointment midweek.

Celtic then took off Rogic and brought on Cartlon Cole who would go up front with Griffiths moving into Rogics place. Everybody immediately thought “Hmm..interesting” and duly awaited to see how it would all work out. Within 2 minutes Cole had a downward header saved by the keeper but in truth McGregors trickery to produce the cross deserved a more clinical finish.
The next attempt Celtic had on goal was a corner which deflected off Lustig and ricocheted goalwards from Mcgregors knee. Thankfully Stefan Johansen was there to stop the ball crossing the line as it was an Inverness Caley corner!

5 minutes later and a Celtic would have a goal that would be talked about like Brazils 1970 classic. Okay, it wont.
Leigh Griffiths took a shot from the 18 yard line and the ball came back to big Carlton. Cole using all his experience, exercised an elephantine touch to totally confuse the Caley defenders and keeper so much that they all ended up in a big heap. Somehow Coles brilliant ESP skils then ensured that Caley defender Devine intervened and allowed the ball to fall down from the sky, onto his shin and trickle into the net in ultra slow mo fashion. Big Cartlton didnt care about that final touch technicality though and celebrated like it was his first goal in years….ahem.

The farcical goal seemed to take the wind out of Caley and after that the game was done.  Johansesn should have did better with a cut back in open play but sent it high and wide, we will let him blame a bobble, it will go with his head band – boom boom!.
A late introcution for GMS helped kill time and it was game over. Job just about done but a welcome 3 points and celtic now 7 points clear at the top of the League.

Etims MOTM – Callum McGregor – great finish and did his best to make chances all day.

I thought Amstrong was dire first half should have been replaced earlier as the arrival of Allan made an immediate difference.
Good game ICT played well for the most part.
Yet another win off the back of a Euro game this is a good habit to get into.

Good result today.
Yet again though I was left disappointed with our passing game, slack in possession and frequently giving the ball away, which seems to be an issue with Deila’s teams.
Mcgregor scored a good goal and Griffiths scored a fine goal, apart from that it was the usual level of performance.
Boyata and Simunovic need to start getting rough out on the park.
Mick Mccarthy would have Went through the player Storey, he wouldn’t have got into the box.
Good to see Tierney start again and he did well again.

Stefan Johansen? Gloves on and he pulled out of a tackle on the edge of our own box.
I would sell him to the highest bidder in January.

Armstrong being played out of position is not getting the best out of a player, widely regarded as the best attacking midfielder in Scotland during his time at Dundee Utd.
Same with GMS, he alongside Stuart Armstrong were effective, game changers at Utd, I remember being genuinely excited when we signed these two players, will it be the same with Ryan Christie?
Deila will probably put him at right back.
Like I have previously stated, this Celtic manager is not getting the best out of these players.
If he is so good at developing players, how is it that Armstrong and GMS are struggling and Henderson is away on loan at Hibs?
Just my opinion but I would rather see Liam Henderson in our team than Stefan Johansen.

I agree that these lads are being played out of position, but Deila has stated in an interview with Mr. Sutton calm that he is trying to make these players better. I am quite sure if Stuart started firing in dipping left footed crosses as well as cutting in and getting 5 shots on target every game he would get moved again. I remember Steve Mcmennamin who was absolutely shocked to find out after moving to Real Madrid from Liverpool that he was not just going to play wide right, that he was also expected to play in the middle and wide left. Not only starting games there, but also just covering Zidane, Figo, etc. Of course he was not adaptable enough and complained that the first word he learned in Spanish was cover me. If Ronnie truly wants to play this fluid attacking football he needs every player to be able to at the very least be good in the 3 closest positions to their favored role. Many players will also be expected to play on the other side of the pitch. Aye we look lethargic and pretty shite when he does it with more than 2 players at a time. Obviously her is not going to move about his older “made” players.

It’s always a hard place to go and get a result, so we’ll done bhoys. Boyata will need to toughen up at the back, as his role in their goal was really weak on his part, he did the same thing against Hamilton. However that’s us 7 points clear at the top of the league, it’s been a good day.

That’s where the money is; that’s where the quality is; that’s where Deila’s ineptitude is so glaringly obvious. Winning Scottish trebles is no longer good enough.

It’s time we stopped being treated with contempt by the like of Desmond and Bankier. Deila gets no credit for beating teams like Caley Jags. It’s what we expect and demand. He gets no credit for bringing on the youth if he can’t, at the same time, get the buy-in of the senior players. There’s no high intensity, no fitness, no plan. All this about a 5 year plan is total shite. We’ll never get into the CL with Deila; he’s not got what it takes.

I agree with you about the CL format being in place to protect the clubs from the big leagues.
It is a joke as is three qualifying rounds just to get there.

I disagree with you about the treble being a ‘ priority ‘ for the Celtic manager, I’m sure behind closed doors at Parkhead, Lawwell has told Deila to win the league and get us into the CL!

Well Mr desi monde you need to put yourself in Anthony Stokes shoes, if you could that is, but you obviously can’t otherwise you wouldn’t be so f#@kin patronising.
He is a proven Celt, waiting and waiting for the incompetent one to give him a call, but the call never comes, instead a nobody from league that doesn’t want him (Cole) turns up and completely turns on it’s head the ethos of the incompetent one,
You know training and nurturing youth to step up and be counted. Cole takes Stokes place.
But hey, let’s all kick Tony Stokes

Tourtenay,
I agree with you about Stokes and the patronising bit.
While NONE of us are privy to what goes on behind the scenes, there is clearly a problem between Stokes and Deila.
If Stokes isn’t pulling his weight in training or busting a gut to be selected, then he should go to another club with lesser demands.
If Deila is freezing him out because of anything other than his professional application, then that would be poor of Deila.
Stokes isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I have always liked him, maybe not first pick material but certainly good enough for the bench.
Also I see the ” developing one ” misses another chance to erm, develop Logan Bailly! HH

I do agree with your reply but that is no reason to assume what we do not know and make Stokes some sort of scapegoat.
Take your mind back to early summer, our number one target, according to the incompetent one was Ciftci, and we were all really pleased when he signed, a bit of muscle with skill up front, where is he now, will he become another Stokes.
It’s beginning to appear that if you don’t really supplicate yourself to Ronny buoy your career at Celtic is over!

You are correct on that front regarding scapegoat but my point is man management, where is the challenge in nurturing someone who is easy to please willing to run that extra mile, a coaches dream.
The real challenge comes when your authority is challenged when you have to adapt to get the best out of the ones who are difficult to manage, or the easy way is to just ignore the possible nugget of brilliance in your squad who’s just a little more difficult to manage.
It is easy to make scapegoats, more difficult to manage in a testing environment.

Tourtenay,
My initial post wasn’t a judgement it was a reasonable point to make.
You nor I are aware of what goes on in training.

If he is giving it his all, Deila should give him a chance like the rest.
If you cared to look back at other threads, I have raised Stokes absence as a concern. HH

We will be saying the same thing at the end of next season and the season afterwards as long as we have the Laurel and Hardy of European football Management at the helm of Celtic Football Club.
We are developing a team of powder puffs who will be swept aside by seasoned professionals of the European game.
Armstrong, MacGregor and the like will pose no threat whatsoever to any seasoned professional.
There is no quality spine to our team, no real enforcer, and you need more than our absent captain.
Outside of Scotland the future does not bode well for the new powder puff Celtic, and it hurts me to say this.

It was an idea to raise extra funds to enable the Club to afford those players we need outwith our current budget.
That clinical finisher we are desperately needing in Europe or that quality CB to steady the ship in defence.
If thee were only 5 million of us out there then £5 each would raise £25m a Season.

Great idea, that. We raise £250 million to buy Messi. Deila will alter his training regime, explain his master plan and convert him to centre-half in week 1. A few months later we’ll still not qualify for serious European competitions.

Our problems are with a board (Desmond and Bankier to name but 10) who treat us with contempt and a manager whose level is Sunday league at best (sorry, any Sunday league managers). Buying extra quality players will be destroyed by the structure that’s running our club.

Playing a consistent team didn’t happen in the CL qualifies due to major changes in personnel and injuries. Reality checks are in order for sure for those who think simply changing the manager will result in suddenly becoming European contenders. How will that happen? What manager could do that on our resources? Top managers win European competitions and go to semi finals and quarter finals. Top managers tend to want to buy top players at a very high cost. How could we do that? Even the big English teams are struggling in the CL. So ok I hear the bitching and moaning and the manager is shite, players are shite, board are shite OK whats the Plan that will change all of this? Any ideas that are credible and not cloud cuckoo land?

Charlie I read an article that said we ( Celtic ) have 9 million fans. I think that is wishful thinking in the extreme. 7 million of them were supposed to be in Japan! They were actually Nakamura fans if anything and still over inflated. Any player fund would have to be funded by many fewer people than the millions often talked about. I think it is a good idea to set up a fund then the question would be who would control it? Who would spend it? Where would it be held in a bank, in trust ? How would it work?

I should imagine an Account could be set up by the Club seperate to the main business (use the old Athletic Coy Account seeing as it is still active for example)Set up a page on the Club website and every time a donation is made the name of the donor goes on the page for the year.
All of this could be set up and run with the resources already to hand.
All above board every penny accounted for.
It’s only a matter of numbersbud.
4 million fans giving £5=£20m
2 Million fans giving £10=£20m
1million fans giving £20=£20m
Anything is possible even (though highly unlikely )
9 million fans giving £5=£45m
I think if something like this was set up,assurences were given the money was to be spent on QUALITY alone then most fans would put into it.
I also think if the figure rose quickly more fans who were perhaps sceptical at first would soon chuck a fiver in gladly to see an increase in Quality on the Park?
After all what is the alternative do nothing and expect more of the same?
I have a tenner waiting right now.

Trebles as Ralph pointed out a few days ago, are few and far between. We have only won it three times in our history. If
we win it this season, Delia and the team would be in a very exclusive club. Hence the nonsense from sevconians and the MSM about it being a must. It is not a must. It would be highly desirable. Simply because Oldco was cheating for multiple years and rightly dissappered from this earth, doesn’t mean any other team can easily win a treble. To buy that line you step into the “Celtic need Rangers” narrative which is a preposterous lie and an insult to everybody else. Celtic need to keeping winning everything we can and keep building a team capable of post Christmas European play

All due respect Monti, I think you’d find it difficult to manage a football team to a treble. Just managing a football team the size of Celtic is a major undertaking for which you need a lot of experience. I know what you mean. You are dismissing the treble as “easy”. You see no value in it even though we have only won it three times. I simply disagree I see huge value in it as it helps confidence, consistency and the ability to build a solid foundation on domestic success. Of course I’d like to see us qualify for CL and/or Europa league and last beyond December. Need to build a team for that

Well you have to win at least 1 leg of the treble to qualify for CL football. So Monti are you saying that simply taking part in the CL groups would suffice for us. Forget trying to win all domestic competitions as long as we won the league and took part in the CL group stages? That is success for us. What I really am finding difficult to understand is what part of winning all three domestic trophies would be a failure? Are we saying that if we won all three domestic trophies this year, it would be a poor year for Celtic? We would be back in the CL pre group qualifiers again to have another attempt at qualifying. They are both important. Certainly one is as important than the other and I want to see Celtic running round Hampden with the cups. I want to see our captain life the cups on national TV. Sorry I would Love to see a treble AND qualify for the CL groups stages

Broxburnbhoy,
I hear you!!
It is a great sight watching Hooped shirts lifting silverware at Hampden, it’s a buzz and I get it!
But yes, winning the League every year and qualifying for the group stages every season WOULD do for me mate, if that was happening every year, that would be big time for Celtic and our supporters.
Look at it another way, do Arsenal, Liverpool and the Manchester clubs prioritise their version of the League cup? No.
What do they want? To be Champions and in the CL.

BB, IF I’m being honest I hate getting knocked out the Scottish cup, but maybe we could play a development side in the league cup?

The treble isn’t important to me, if it is to you and other fans, then I respect that.

BB, another way to look at the League cup, is this.
If Celtic are trying to sign a top player or 3, it won’t be being league cup or treble winners that will lure them to Paradise, it will be CL participation that will get them to sign.

I cannot believe I am about to say this, but I agree with Monti, while winning the Treble would be a historic achievement. I would rather take the League and be in Europe after Xmas for a few years on the trot. Than worry about the League Cup. The more we do well in Europe the less qualifying we have to do. Back to the coefficient.

I had to look twice at Ronny Deila saying ” Anthony Stokes disrespected his team – mates ”
Yet every opportunity last season he ( Deila) kept insisting “we will win the treble”??
Is that not dismissing the opposition or indeed, being disrespectful!

I cant understand why there so much negativity around our europa league run. Molde are probably going to win the group, are the Ajax and Fenerbahce fans calling for the coaches head?no. Look at the money fenerbahce have spent, and they still couldnt win the group. Some fans, (my old boy included) really need a reality check. If Van Dijk and Denayer were still at Celtic theres a good chance we would have won the group, but the wanted to leave, we spent 7 million replacing them. It takes time for a CH pairing to gel. If we could all stop frothing at the mouth that would be lovely.

Delia to stokes , shut your mouth and do your talking on the park! Could say the same about you and jc! Can i once pick up the paper without having to read another motivational speech from dali lama delia about how we should all live our lifes!

Seemingly stokes , a professional fooballer with years experience is to follow mcgreggors example of having a year in the reserves to knuckle down. Mcgregor who incidentally shouldnt have been bombed out in the first place. He had a couple of bad games along with the rest of the team.

so will stefan johansen be getting the same talk and told to go away and buck up his ideas as he has been the worst all season!. The midfield played well on thu then that diddys back in and we get served up that dross yesterday because of it!

Mr delia is full of shite half the time, people saying stokes is doing this and that, our club captain was lieing in the street pished with a kebab before a cup game and played the next game. Practice what you constantly preech ronny!

When Sevco first appeared, they talked about ‘tanted titles’ because the great Rangers were no longer present to challenge us. The financial doping Huns would of course be experts on Oldco ‘tainted titles’. The funny thing is Packy Bonner, Christ Sutton, Alec McLeish, Monti and Andybhoy have constantly told us that because “anyone” could win a league or a treble in our crap league then they are taking the Sevco line as well. Monti, the reason you COULDN’T win a Treble is that nobody would play for you because you would keep telling them that even if they win, what they have won is worthless, effortless and not worth as much as sixty years failure in Europe. Same as the Sevco Orcs are saying to us. A person could just as well argue that any European title is worthless because all the goodies are controlled by a few football oligarchs. It is pretty demoralising to support a team whose own supporters say whatever we win honestly is cheap and not worth it. Keep pissing on our parade is the same as what the Orcs and MSM are doing. Well done bhoys. You can only win against the opposition in front of you. We are Celtic supporters through and through. Yes, we want you in the Champion’s League but we also support you in all games, in all cups and tournaments until that blessed moment comes. I couldn’t win a Treble with Celtic because I am not a football manager but I could at least to be humble enough to compliment them on good effort. Try telling Alan, Tierney, Griffiths, Mackay-Steven, Forrest etc that a Treble has no value or no effort. Not only unfair but Sevco bullshit.

10 in a row is what is important . It goes in the record books , champions league group stages are instantly forgotten ,in fact I can’t even remember who were in last years semi finals. Sevco will never catch us even if they are around long enough. Tainted Titles Bah Humbug! (It’s that time of year).☘☘☘

Read today that Davy Moyes is careful to choose the ‘right club’ before he says yes to a contract . FFS if that is the case his decision making must be called into question before he would even be considered for the Celtic Job. Based on his last two failures.☘☘☘
