Izzy really going out with him?

Ah what a difference a week makes.

Just after the abject Aberdeen performance, I put up a piece asking a few questions and pondering the possible outcomes. it was all a bit negative. I still stand by it while somewhere Charlie Saiz is sitting smiling and saying “Told you so”, you know in that sanctimonious way the cat that got the cream licks itself all day after a sweet treat.

The Pittodrie defeat is history and after a decent showing in Amsterdam, the real Celtic finally turned up this season and set about Frank Gallaghers Dundee outfit. A great display from all in the hoops saw attack after attack with the crowd literally on their feet. The Dundee keeper( a Mr S Bain – note for later!)  was having a blinder and the crowd was oohing and ahhing and clapping away as wave after wave of onslaught headed towards the Dundee goal. This was football, The Celtic way!

Performance wise, Gordon was solid and quickly got down low to prevent a cheeky long range shot from Dundee midfield.  At the back Dedryck and Efe lined up and despite a lot of fans apprehension, they totally strolled it and no real mistakes or hearts in mouths moments were called upon. On the right side of defence, well done to Saidy Janko, a great performance up and down the line and with  Lustig forever marked under “Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw” this lad could cement his place with such future showings. As for Izzy..more later.

In midfield,  Tom Rogic was proving he is more that just a 5-a-side player with plenty of long runs and excellent vision as well as shots on goal when possible including his goal to start of the onslaught. Kris Commons and Scott Brown were doing that “quiet work” were you think they’re not really in the game much but then realise “oh he helped make that goal, and he also played that ball etc”. Nir Biton continues to progress and is showing signs of a new found core strength to compliment his skill, at one point near the end of the game he turned and lost 3 players in the one move which had the crowd cheering and the Dundee players trying to use Google Maps to locate him. James Forrest arrived with a good appetite for the game and had some great runs with one cut in and shot almost a contender for Goal of the Month, damn that crossbar! Up front,  Leigh Griffiths had a strange game as he seemed to have a free role and while he took his goal well, he could have tried a bit harder to bring in my £5 hat-trick wager. To a standing ovation, Griffiths made way on 60 mins for the Nadir Ciftci to get a decent run out.

And that brings us to Izzy.

What a day for our Honduran hero.

After a rather curious start to the season, some had questioned if Ronnie was gonna have to employ some tough love. His team looked a little lost, a little down in the dumps and frankly some looked as if they were feeling sorry for themselves. Well if anything it seems the opposite tactic worked. Izzy had been sent off in Amsterdam for 2 yellow cards and wasn’t just a little down in the dumps, he had changed his name to Stig. He had apologised to his team mates and felt responsible for the late equalizer with his colleagues having to hold back Ajax with Izzy sitting in the dressing room. Ronnie duly stepped up and defended his defender come striker. Welcome to Celtic FC..no Scapegoats required.

This would be no occasion for a defender feeling sorry for himself. izzy was called upon to get up and down that line and by the end of the game he was almost playing ahead of our striker. Our Mr Enthusiasm was clearly up for the game and his first goal was a peach with a lovely 1-2 and a lubo-esque slot into the near post. His second was a cracking late run in at the back post to side foot volley home.

The reaction of Izzy when he scored against Dundee was a great sight, he looked to the skies, praised the lord,  gestured his appreciation to the crowd and then made a million Celtic ghirls jealous by running straight into the arms of his beloved manager. A great sight and even early on, this game really could be a season changer with Nadir Ciftci getting his first goal, despite that Linesman trying his best to stop him at every turn.

The Sebo penalty moment for Izzy was also a great occasion with the crowd were all smiling, the players all relaxed and an Easyjet pilot shitting his pants as Izzy mistakenly thought he was Dixie Deans for a few seconds and sent the ball flying high like a rocket. Oh how we laughed as Izzy threw himself to the floor in mock anguish and no doubt there was a rueful Hugh Keevins preparing his “That was just disrespectful to Dundee!” speech..its coming to radio Clyde Superscoreboard anytime soon.

Mind you, its not just Hugh, seems some Celtic fans don’t understand the concept of enjoyment. Some bam behind me was soon complaining that “This Celtic side are shite, how many chances have we missed now!”. It was up there with the guy next to me saying “We should never have let that boy Fox go, he’s having a blinder in goal for Dundee today!”…reminded me of the days when a guy in the Family section constantly berated Chris Sutton for not holding the ball up, despite the fact he was sitting on the Aston Villa bench by then.

So…corner turned or too early to tell? Who knows but lets enjoy it. The crowd even had a round of applause for a “GB Team win David Cup Semi Final” announcement. Who knew the Green Brigade liked tennis? Its onwards and upwards to the next game, a  league cup clash against Raith Rovers..lets keep that momentum up Celtic, sure Ronnie, we will let you rotate a few players in preparation for Hearts coming to town next week but lets keep the focus and surely the goals will come.

Our best performance and no sight of Johanson. That by far is our best team this season with no failures . Excellent team performance and could have been 10. Although I bet 5 – 0 and thought my bet was up when no 5 went in but I will take 5 – 6 – 7 goals every game. Great show Celts Lets keep it going Celts . H.H.

Great post Desi nice and positive.
No Lustig

Best attacking performance at CP since the 9-0 pumping of Aberdeen I reckon.

A loss to Aberdeen, and Celtic are abject; a win over Dundee and Celtic are terrific…

How about a sense of proportion?

Tom,
Exactly!
My point ( shared by many Celtic supporters I’m sure) is that while it’s great to have days like Sunday, it still stings that we have failed (again) to reach the Champions league.
Some want to sweep our valid questions of the club under the carpet because there may be an exciting league cup final v Forfar or Falkirk in the offing, on the journey to the ‘ treble ‘?
I just wish some fans could see the treble is NOT important!

Just listened to Charlie Nicholas on the news, really talked up Aberdeen. First comment on Celtic was how shit Dundee were. Aberdeen are now real contenders after 8 games. The fact that they have had one injury and don’t play European football not mentioned. Celtic playing in Europe is according to Charlie Nic a big problem even although we played on Thursday night and came out to win 6-0 yesterday. What did Celtic do to this guy that leaves him so F####g bitter

Record this year to date has been played 12, won 7 drawn three and lost two. I think there has been 1 other big game, away to Ajax, where we got a very creditable draw. I hope we can continue to paint over the cracks in the same way we did Sunday and pretty soon the cracks will be well and truly filled. The Hearts game is coming at a good time for us and paying attention to winning against Raith Rovers is also important if we want to chase domestic trebles. Roll on these two games and paint the town green. Went to see Black Mass last night. Good film about Whitey Bulger and South Boston Gangsters.

Broxburnbhoy,
I couldn’t give two monkeys about the Raith Rovers game, the Scottish league cup or the much sought after ” treble “!

Celtic should be targeting the group stages of the Champions league and the League title every season..ONLY!

That’s how a big club should act, I remember Alex Ferguson saying that his priority every season was to win the Champions league and the English premiership!

No banging on about Trebles or winning the League cup or even the FA cup, just the two main prizes, that’s how I want Celtic to think..THINK BIG!

Good to see Tom Rogic starting to make an impression, always thought the guy had something about him, he needs to play most weeks to get the full picture of what he can bring.
While we won’t win 6-0 every week, it’s good to see Celtic going for teams throats, with the goals flowing.
I’m not convinced Deila is the man for Celtic and I stand by my conviction.

While some may want to get all excited about beating a domestic side 6-0, I’m afraid I look at the big picture when it comes to Celtic, that big picture is how we fare in Europe.

Sorry Ronny, you will need to do a lot more to impress the Celtic support than beating Dundee 6-0.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL IS ALL THAT MATTERS, RONNY!

Charlie,
I backed him when he came in, I wanted him out after the Maribor game then decided to give him a chance, then we have another shocker v Malmo this season, then we can’t beat a ten man Aberdeen side?
I have seen enough and I believe this job is too big for him, he is out of his depth and he will not take Celtic into the group stages.
He was the cheap option and that will bring failure after failure.

What’s the aim of this board these days?

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  Monti

He delivered a League and Cup Double in his first Season Monti Europe is not a given at Celtic it never has been no matter who was in charge or what was spent.
I think you and a growing number who follow Celtic need to get your head round that whilst we may spend a bit more than your Malmos and Maribors we still don’t spend on genuine quality which is no getting beyond our reach.
These players want £50k a week bud just for showing up.
The days of the Larssons Suttons and Hartsons are gone mate these types are simply not interested in 20k a week and plying their trade in Scotland.
The Board could do more I am in total agreement I think they could bring in less numbers and spend more wisely on bette quality.
We have blown a small fortune on shite in recent years it all adds up to less money in the pot in the end.
If anyone needs sacking it’s the fucking scouts who scouted the likes of Bangura Boerigter Pukki Balde Fortune Rasmussen Juarez etc etc etc.
Incidentally I actually suggested we keep Berget after his short Loan Spell I actually thought like you with Rogic he had something to offer.
How Ironic it was his goals who sent us packing in Europe.
It is my understanding we still have VVD’s money to hit the Bank perhaps an eye to strengthening in key areas in Jan is on the cards?
We shall have to wait and see.
Deilas vision is clear and concise Monti and as proved yesterday when played properly it is extremely effective.

I hear you Monti. If we prioritize then it would certainly be win the SPL every year so that we can qualify for the European Champions League group stages. I disagree with the implication that the Scottish Cup and League cup are unimportant to us. Those finals are great days out for us, we win trophies and we can run out some youngsters at the same time. Thinking big for us would include a domestic treble. SPL, Scottish Cup and League Cup. I want that. I also want to qualify for Champions League too. I think that is a viable target and not necessarily big thinking. Big thinking for me would be to get to the knockout rounds of a European competition each year.

Devoy45

Under Big Jock we could have it all: at home and in Europe. The two are related. Playing the same system at home and on the Continent, surely winning 6-0 at home can only help in Europe? A team that can’t win in its own league is not going to be very confident in Europe and will only do worse. Confidence can only be good not bad and must be nurtured somewhere. Winning either cup is difficult and not a given.
I agree entirely with Tom Campbell about a sense of proportion. I found it last year and won’t need to look for it again.

I think Hearts losing 3 in a row narrows the race down to us and Aberdeen. A good bet to place might be when Aberdeen drops its first points? We play them at home in October, not long to go.

Celtic: Home to Hearts. Away to Hamilton. Away to Motherwell. Home to Dundee United.HOME TO ABERDEEN

Aberdeen: Away to Caley. Home to St.Johnstone.Away to Ross County. Home to Motherwell. AWAY TO CELTIC.

What Sir Alec Ferguson says about Celtic (or much else for that matter) is totally irrelevant given the budget he had. Success in Europe is mostly a rich man’s dream. It’s our duty to bloody the noses of the rich from time to time (Barcelona, Man Utd, AC Milan etc)If we didn’t win domestic trophies we wouldn’t win anything at all and haven’t done so since for a half century. Of course, the League is the priority but a Treble is always a rare treat worth achieving.

Bring on Raith! C’mon the Bhoys.

Carlton Cole!
As a Celtic fan who has admired and appreciated West Ham football down the years,I would urge Ronny to forget about signing Cole. He is an absolute puddin’ who is lazy, cumbersome and a complete liabilty for any attack minded team. I know he has picked up a few England caps but only as a space filler. There’s plenty of him to do that. Think again Celtic!

Football really is all about money nowadays i was disapointed as everyone else to not qualify for the Champions league but we are playing European football against some proper big clubs.I think we are all a bit spoiled nowadays i mean in the early 90s we would have bit your hand off for any European football and remember the disapointment of the epic Partizan Belgrade tie in the old ECWC.All some fans think about now is the money on offer not the joy of playing and hopefully winning some Euro matches

Monti

You always have to move forwards in football tho, why should we be regarded as ” spoiled ” because we want more from our team/club?
The 90’s were by and large shite but we can’t demand less now because we didn’t have it then?

I just want a proper Celtic side out there on the park, the stands full and a club and a team going places.
It is my belief this current board are not aiming for the stars, I feel we are floating along and hoping for the best, this isn’t a great strategy.

When I say I want DD and PL to dig deeper and speculate more, I don’t mean go and pay 10m for him or 6m for him, what I mean is, identify two or three players who have Champions league experience who maybe aren’t a regular starter for their club at that level any more.
Look at Hartson, at Sutton at Lennon or a Lambert.
These players did wonderfully for Celtic, cost money yes but they helped the club to greater heights.
If the Celtic board said look, this place needs a lift, you only get a lift by puting a top name or three in there, the fans will respond and attend the games, more money brought in and balancing things up a bit.
We need the quality of a Di Canio, a Cadete or a Lubo in there.

The benefits of bringing in some top quality players will spin off on the whole club.
At the moment there are about 10,000 – 15-000 fans missing every home game.

That is a shocking state of affairs, it will get worse.
We have to upgrade the team, the club has to think bigger.
I know Roy Keane is a controversial figure and not all fans respect what he has to say, but I do and when he say’s Celtic should be a Champions league side every year, he should know.

We can sit back and go, ah fuck it we are out again, walk about with our tail between our legs and accept the unacceptable, or yours speak up and demand more, because we deserve more and we can do more.

So fucking do more!

Don’t get me wrong. The best football nights I have ever experienced are the European nights at Celtic Park against top world competition: Barcelona, Milan, Juventus, Man Utd. etc. Those are special and what we want and need. I think we’ll be there again under Deila. But we can’t be there unless we win all we can domestically.

Monti

Reply to  Devoy45

Devoy,
Deila fucked up in the Maribor game at home last year by dropping our best player, our best goalscorer and the only guy in the squad who can unlock a defence…..to play his friend Berget?
He played a containing game in a packed Celtic park when the prize was there, begging to be picked up.
He got it wrong!

Malmo away, to be fair it was always going to be 50/50 this one, but I expected to go out…EXPECTED to go out to Malmo?

If Deila takes us into the qualifiers next season and we go out again to one of these European superpowers, will you stick with him again?

Deila is bluffing it….

If I was the decision maker at the Park I would watch very closely to the next 5 european games and if we have a mare, then, decisions have to be made regarding the manager ,as I’m pretty certain they will not accept another year of no CL revenue.

Craig Gordon is one of the best goalkeepers I know. Bailley looks a very decent sub.

Effy is much maligned but good in centre of defence.

Boyata is young has skills needs time to bed in, will be really good in future.

Izzy,, what can you say? Love the guy, linked well with Stokes loves bombing up the wing but forgets to get back! I think it’s right that he didn’t have enough completion for his place.

Bitton, just keeps getting better & better.

Broonie, should be spanked on his bare arse for his passing, but his tackling and off the ball stuff is amazing.

Midfield?

We are missing Armstrong at the moment, he is going to be a legend.

GMS I love his cheeky wee smile but he needs to get his act together, was the same at DU Utd., Consistency!!!

Griffiths, love the guy, always tries 100%

Chiftci, Thank goodness he has broke his duck Onwards & upwards mate.

I know I’ve left a lot of players out but I’ve got a sore finger, sorry.

Monti, I don’t always agree with you and I sometimes think you dwell too much on the Malmo debacle, but I have to say if the board could tap into your determination and single-mindedness we’d be all the better for it. I also couldn’t believe how badly we played against Malmo..if we had played well and lost I would have accepted it as just not our night, but we played like a team that was going through the motions. Now, as I said in another post, the real reason for why so many players didn’t play well that night will probably stay in the dressing room until Broony or Ronny write their memoires…I still suspect it started back when Johanson argued with Griffiths over the penalty and Ronny “scolded” Johanson publicly. It seems to me no coincidence that we played well against Ajax and even better against Dundee, while the aforementioned Johanson was not on the pitch!!!
Anyway we are now on the way back to playing as we should, and on the long way back to the qualifiers for the Champions 2016-17. Have patience Monti, don’t let what happened affect your belief that we can qualify. I support, always, Ronny and I believe he’ll get it right in the end. If we don’t qualify for the next Champions, that for me will be time to part ways with him….until then my patience is strong.
P.S. Is it true you hold a candle-lit vigil every year for your wee goldfish that died when you were 5 years old? Just ribbing my man. Just stay away from sharp knives and razors!! HH

I don’t know if you saw Roy Keane’s comments recently, jist of what he was saying was that Celtic should be in the Champions league every season.
We listen also when the likes of Messi, Xavi, iniesta…all rave about Celtic park and it’s incredible atmosphere.
Then we go from that to look at the team on the park, it isn’t a good side.
Izaguirre scored 2 at the weekend and suddenly he’s Roberto Carlos FFS the guy has been our weak link for two years.
We have a goalkeeper who was on the scrapheap 2 years ago who can’t come off his line, we sold our goalkeeper for 10m and brought in Gordon who has been out for two years?
I think Craig Gordon is a top class keeper, but how fit is he? Does he not come off his line because he is protecting himself?
Loan players from Man City and Man Utd, Scepovic going out on loan to Getafe and not bringing someone in?

We needed a central defender but we go for Scott Allan?
Liam Henderson goes to Hibs on loan? Crazy.

Monti, yeah, all those things you mention are crazy but MON, WGS and Lenny all did similar crazy things. I won’t list them all but crazy substitutions, crazy team selections, crazy buys. Lenny and WGS collected midfielders who they never used because both gaffers were midfielders themselves.

We do need to be in the Champion’s League and should give Deila one more shot at it. He may also prove something in the Europe League this year. If we win the Europe League we qualify for the CL! Support Deila for one more year, give him one more CL attempt (same as Lenny)

You quote Roy Keane. Bad choice there son. Keane was a wonderful player but his management skills are somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan—in fact Genghis ‘Keane’ has a good ring to it.
Deila is learning and as long as he wins the league then I am willing to give him time. It is easy to second guess any manager. I am getting old and although for me football isn’t a matter of life or death, I would like us to do something ‘big’ in Europe before I shuffle off into the Celtic mists…I was 17 in 1967. That seems so long ago. Let’s support Deila and our bhoys and be patient. A year isn’t long in football terms.
Maybe we can soon remind Messi of what a CL atmosphere can be like in Paradise?
