Celtic Diary Tuesday November 25: Why Aren’t The Austrians Worried ?

Theres a couple of things worrying me about the rest of the Europa campaign.

For the first time in a million years, give or take an hour or so, a team is coming to Celtic Park on European business, a team that the hoops already gained a draw with in the away match, and I’m not confident of a win. A win, of course, is necessary to avoid the scenario of a trip to Zagreb needing a point.

Victory over Red Bull Salzburg, the visitors on Thursday, would normally be a given, but Celtics tendency to slacken off late in games, whether due to tiredness or complacency, isn’t so much worrying as alarming, and the game against Astra in romania is testament to this. The qualifying campaign should have been settled there and then, indeed it did seem that it was mission accomplished, but we managed to make an arse of it, and now we have to do it the hard way.

Yet it shouldn’t be “the hard way ” at all. Anyone coming to Celtic Park, least of all a side such as Red Bull, who are not one of the continents big names, should be there for the taking. Take away this season, and perhaps last, and fortress Parkhead was one of the most difficult places for opponents to get anything.

Thats changed, which may be due to complacency, it may be due to bad luck, or , more likely, it may be the fact that its in Europe where the downsizing policy becomes more evident.

Whilst the atmosphere at Celtic Park can be intimidating and loud, its not exactly hostile. Remember when supporters applauded an opponent off in the Barcelona game last year ? All very nice, and all very buddy bonding, but the downside is that teams like coming to Glasgow, when they should need to be coaxed off the plane when they arrive at the airport.

Take Kevin Kampl, the Salzburgs Slovenian midfielder;

“This game at Celtic was always going to be the highlight for every player in our team.

“When the draw was made, it was the game we all wanted to play in.

“Of course, we are going to Glasgow to try and get the win.

He’s looking forward to it when he should be dreading it. And he’s talking of winning the game.

Some of us can remember Bayern Munich doing a lap of honour because they got out with a draw.

Some of can remember Carlos Puyol running around the pitch during the game calming down his Barcelona team mates.

Some of us can remember Suduva players gazing in awe at the surroundings while the Celts kept scoring against them.

The latter was enjoyable, but thats what the crowd are supposed to do. Knock the other players out of their stride.

 We don’t do that anymore.

Former player Willie McStay has the right idea. Red Bull are from Austria, and that gives him a chance to at least partially blame Red Bull for Rapid Viennas antics thirty years ago this month.

“Everybody saw the bottle coming on from the crowd and the Rapid player go down – despite the fact it landed nowhere near him.

(I was in the jungle tht night, and waited patiently for UEFA to call me as a witness. The bottle landed at least a days march from the Austrian, and he did go down with more enthusiasm than a , I’d better skip the punchline. )

“Rapid just wanted to create mayhem and I remember after the game having a funny feeling and knowing that something was not right, it wasn’t over.

“That proved to be the case. The game in Manchester took place in a toxic atmosphere and it is hardly surprising Celtic lost as there was so much grievance in the air.

“Of all the matches I played for Celtic this remains the most vivid and I felt robbed.”

 Other heinous crimes commited by Austrians include;

This family, responsible for my ears bleeding every christmas since i was just five years of age !

And I don’t think much of their airports either.

And remember Falco, with his pop rock classic “Rock me Amadeus ” ?

falco

Actually, based on that there should be a UN sponsored internment  of Austrian music teachers, who are the real criminals here.

Austria hasn’t offered much to the world of acting either, with such luminaries as Arnold Schwarzenegger and the positively “call the police theres a weirdo in the street ” Peter Lorre

Image of Peter Lorre

So at the game, don’t applaud them. Make them suffer as countless kids who have endured Julie bloody Andrews and her favourite sodding things have also suffered. We hear that so frequently are Austrians forced to sing the theme tune that they actually break down at the sound of the sound of music.

Worth a shot, if you ask me.

Scott Brown will return to the side for the game, but one yellow card, which is probably more likely than not, will put him out of the Zagreb game, and whilst one player does not make a team, he can certainly make a difference.

All of the little mens and portents are coming together, and its making me nervous. Its not at all like Celtic to cock things up.

Paraphrasing  Billy McNeill after the Feyenoord defeat in 1970

“We had climbed the mountain ( by beating Leeds ) , but we fell over the molehill at the top.

Or it could just be the usual pre match nerves. Red Bull went six points clear at the top of the Austrian league with a win over Sturm Graz at the weekend, and they will be confident.

Celtic need a big game from their big players. And a bit more hostility from the crowd.

Celtic’s opening game of the English Premier League International Cup kicks off against Everton at Goodison tonight at 7pm, with tickets priced at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. A pay-at-the-gate system will be in operation.

Thats from the official website, and any fans in the north west might be curious enough to pop along to the game. I’m not going, because in Liverpool you get your pockets picked.

However.the tournament, which replaces the Next Gen series, cancelled when UEFA realised that it wasn’t making the right clubs enough money, looks interesting. Celtic will play Sunderland and Villareal later on, and if nothing else the group offers some very good away trips for the travelling supporter.

 David Unsworth is in charge of the Everton side, and he said;

“It’s a prestigious competition and it’s a great chance for our Under-21s to get more match action under their belts,” he said.

“There are never enough fixtures to give all of our Under-21 squad the action they deserve so an opportunity like this is welcomed.

“We’ve heard that a couple of coach loads of Celtic fans are coming down for the match, too, so it should be a great experience for the lads, and no, Stubbsy, I haven’t touched  your bloody phone. “

David Unsworth with Alan Stubbs

According to the Daily Express, John Guidetti is keeping his options open, as he will be a free agent come the summer. Which has to go down as the sporting scoop of the year. Of course he will. We just have to make sure we are his best option.

The report says Celtic have made a £2m offer, which conflicts with stories a £3m fee had been agreed, and mentions that Guidetti is also wanted by Hull, Ajax and Marseille. Which is probably the only time you will read those three teams in the same sentence.

Ola  John, a winger, Loris Benito, a left back and striker Derley are the three Benfica fringe players supposedly being watched in the frequent recent visits to Benficas Stadium of Light, which, if true, means the end of the road for Berget, boerrigter, Tonev and Wakaso. And it doesn’t harbour well for Griffiths, Pukki and Balde.

 Theres been a wee bit of confusion over the cash raised by an “Old Firm ” legends game, with  a mystery surrounding exactly which charities will benefit. The game took place at Forthbank on Sunday, and the Observer newspaper claimed it was having difficulty founding out who was getting what;

Flyers for the game were distributed to homes across Stirling. They state that the match is “Supporting local children’s football in Stirling and Edinburgh.”

Tickets are advertised at £7 for adults and £4 for concessions, with fans being offered the chance to play in the game and take advantage of mascot packages for children.

Those staging the game were contacted by the Observer. One of them, Old Firm Legends Director, John Clifford, yesterday (Thursday) insisted money from the Forthbank game would go to grassroots football in Stirling . However, what percentage of the gate receipts would be channeled in that direction remains a mystery.

Old Firm Legends have previously organised similar games in and around Glasgow but faced claims from some charities that they were never paid by the company.

NSPCC Scotland are one of the charities who were due to benefit from a match advertised by Old Firm Legends, but this week said they had no record of receiving any money from the company.

The same match was also advertised as supporting Alzheimer Scotland. Fundraising bosses at the charity launched a probe after failing to receive a donation.

And Old Firm Legends Ltd were also at the centre of claims that they organised a match for the Clutha Appeal Fund but there are claims no money was handed over.

Earlier this year, Ibrox heroes including Andy Goram and Artur Numan and former Hoops stars such as Frank McAvennie and Bobby Petta played the match at Saracen Park, Glasgow, which was advertised as raising money for the fund, in support of victims of the Clutha helicopter disaster.

But fund bosses have claimed that they never received any cash from the company or its director, John Clifford.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council, who administer the fund, said: “We can find no trace of any donation from Mr Clifford or Old Firm Legends – nor do we have any record of the specific amounts he described being paid in at a bank counter under any other name at any time.”

Oops. Maybe someone can clear that up. I’d hate to think they were sullying the good name of the Old Firm brand.

Over at Ibrox, Andy Goram -not sure if it was one or two of him-has/have comeout in support of his /their buddy Ally Mccoist.

“Remain calm — and remember, remember the 5th of November three years ago that Rangers went 15 points clear of Celtic”

Ally McCoist was in charge then, and he blew it. Perhaps age has confused the former keeper/keepers.

“That’s why I refuse to get too worried about Hearts opening up a nine-point gap over Rangers in the Championship”

McCoist isn’t worried either. Although interestingly, his pal Hugh Keevins was calling for his sacking on Radio Clyde last night, which would save the chubby funster from having to walk away from the job.

And his severance package.

Henrik Larssons son, Jordan, was pictured in the Diary yesterday. The youngster is a target for a number of clubs across Europe, and persinally, i hope he will stay away from Celtic. Certainly this early in is career. The pressure and expectation on him would be immense, and possibly career damaging.

Anyone remember this game ? Where is it, and who are the opponents ?

Good stuff.

I’m popping along to Goodison the night. Last game like this I went to was a couple of years ago in the ’emerging youth’ CL Tourney when we ripped Man City a new one at Hyde FC’s ground.
Tony Watt scored that night as did Paul George, our kids were not out of place in the millionaires company.

The reason teams enjoy coming to Celtic park is to sample the atmosphere ( Champions league atmosphere) I don’t think it’s because they think they are going to win.
Downsizing is at it’s clearest when playing in Europe, we sell our best players yet some expect more Champions league nights like Barcelona, this isn’t going to happen.
If we want to be regarded as a serious Champions league team, we have to keep our best players and buy players who can take the team on, for example don’t buy squad players, buy two or three players who are simply different class.
This will elevate the team and excite the supporters.
As Jock Stein said ” Build a team for Europe and Scotland will take care of itself”!
If we continue to downsize then we will become a Europa league side, sadly I feel that’s where we are. HH!

No need to say any more I think you have it fairly covered Monty.
We are a Europa Team now this is the state of play now.
A good year or two BUILDING a squad capable of Champions League Football might not be a bad thing it will allow the Club to gather momentum again that I feel has been lost after a miserable showing last Season in Europe.
We were average.

The annoying thing Charlie, is every time we look like having a strong side, we don’t go a few steps further and really strengthen the team.
It’s always been the same way.
It’s about time the board lifted the whole club and bring in a few major signings.

Sorry Charlie,we can’t afford not to be in the Champions
League,EVERY season.So,you would forego,a potential 33M,next season,with BT putting in huge cash windfalls ?
Are Maribor a Chhampions League team ? No.
Were we,a CL team,just 2 years ago ? Yes.
How can you build without finance ?
Players want to experience CL football. With a few experienced,
quality players, this team can be transformed. This is where the CL riches are put to good use.
Also,CL revenue,is essential, for us to dominate Scottish football,
with the ‘ 10 ‘ being our ultimate goal !

Buy in cheap..sell on big.
Dont invest in Quality.
Pay Pete his Bosince it has bonus.
Buy in cheap…sell on big.
Don’t invest in quality
Pay Pete his Bonus.
And so on….
Celtic are no longer in the business of building sides pal that idea died after the O’Neil era.
Ever since then there has been a steady decline in spending.
We have been going backwards in Europe whilst the Champions League have been accelerating forward.
A good run in the Europa can be a springboard for the Big League as players get used to travelling and getting results away from home.

Charlie,
You missed the point I was making.Champions League riches
have to be put to investing in a few quality players.A change in
transfer policy has to be implemented.
Why would any Celtic fan, want to forego,a potential 33M,from qualifying for CL group stage, next season ??

Ralph, what are you worrying about,we will qualify on Thursday. However, not by winning.I think we will get a draw.
But,by Astra drawing at home to Zagreb.
I was hoping Salzburg would have rested their 2 prolific strikers,Soriano(who Lenny wanted) and Alen. However, with them 6 clear in their league, they won’t rest anybody.I can see
them scoring, the 2 aforementioned strikers, only need half a chance. But,we will also score.Forrest will be the key,if he is on fire.A 1-1 draw, with an Astra draw against Zagreb, will allow Ronny to enjoy, his first real achievement,at our great club !

I can’t believe the pessimism surrounding Celtic at the moment. I’m not so sure that it’s Celtic fans or Rangers fans who are spreading the gloom and doom. We have much to be grateful for, we’re top of the league, still in the League cup and Scottish cup and about to qualify for the Europa league knock out stages. We have the best guy in the country in charge of our finances. We have a manager who for a rookie is doing fine no matter what is said to the contrary with some moaners. Maybe some of you yearn for Lennon coming back to save us. It aint gonna happen, he carries too much baggage. As for Celtic letting all their best players go as some so called fans put it, there is nothing Celtic can do about it if a player want’s to double or treble their wages down south. You cannot hang on to dissatisfied players then let them go for nothing when the contract expires. I’m dead sure that most of the critics among our fans haven’t a clue about how a business is run and it is a business like it or not. All mister Lawwell is doing is looking after the money that the true fans who invested in the club are well looked after and not squandered down the pan like another club. Cheer up for fucksake.

I’m glad someone else is able to support the team.
We’re a win away from qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa league. We’ve got a home game in order to supply that win against a team we drew with at their ground. A little bit of optimism wouldn’t go amiss.
Get along on Thursday night and roar the team on like we used to do.
Can I add, we manage to pick up players on the basis that they’ll get a chance of CL football and that they’ll be allowed to go to the footballers holy grail, the EPL, if a decent offer comes in for them. I’m absolutely certain this is the selling point that is made to the player’s agents. If we didn’t offer them these 2 things, most of them wouldn’t sign on.
Time to accept we’re a selling club, but as long as the players we pick up give us 2 good seasons and a profit on our outlay, I’ll be happy.
Re the Rapid game – we should never have played the replay, we should have told UEFA we weren’t accepting their decision. The bottle never went anywhere near the player (I was in the Jungle that night as well and saw the incident clearly as the bottle came from somewhere behind me), The only reason we played the game was because the board thought we’d win again and they’s make lots of money from the game.

I, it’s working a treat being a ‘selling club’.
Look around you, Celtic Park is becoming a soulless shell and with the ‘success’ of bringing players in for 2 years and selling for a profit, again, that’s not quite true if you take the multitude of dumplings that have been brought in for strong money and good wages, only to be put out on loan and subsequently, either, run their contract down or are paid off, the losses of which, I would imagine, an embarrassment to the people that are running the club.
As you have commented on the Rapid game, I too was in the Jungle when the bottle was thrown from directly in front of me, though didn’t see the guy (twat) that did it and at the Old Trafford game I left to drive back up the road as soon as their goalie got attacked and boy did I curse that twat that threw that fckn bottle.
If we didn’t play that game, then UEFA would have banned us from Europe for 2 or 3 years, so, although the old board were a shower, they had no option.

I used to think like you andy that is until I started looking at our Clubs revenues from 2004 when Peter Lawwell took the helm.
in 2004 our Club made more money than we did this year.
Our Turnover was also slightly higher.
Peter Lawwells Bonus in 2004 was less than a tenth of what his Bonus was this year.
Yoy explain to me how it is he has earned a bonus 10 times greater in a Season where our Club made less money?
We are a selling Club for a reason.
To clear our debts we had to up our revenue streams.

That’s the truth of the matter.
We owe the Co-OP £14.4M right now in long term Loans.
the final payement is in July 2019 it currently stands at £12.4m but the rate is now non fixed and so may well rise over the next 5 years.

Hence the buy to sell policy.
Meanwhile Pete draws his rather large Bonus regardless.
Happy?

More fool you pal.

As stated above,Charlie,EVERY season in the Champions League, will provide finance to invest in 2/3 QUALITY players.
Especially now,as BT as broadcaster,is worth an EXTRA,8M to us on qualifying for groups, next season.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  holy sea

They arent investing though are they Holy?
They are selling but not replacing with similar or better quality.
They punted Hooper and replaced with Pukki
They punted Wanyama and brought in Biton
They punted Forster and brought in Gordon on a free and on a wing and a prayer his body would cope.
That’s £27 million in and £3.5m back out.
and the rest to re slabbing the front of the ground and paying off the debts they denied exist.

Without selling our Accounts would not be so rosey bud.
The quality has been eroded and now because of this approach ie not strengthening from a position of strength like we had 2 years ago our performances have dropped to Europa League Level and the ground is emptying as a result.

Balance sheets don’t win Football matches pal players do and so long as we keep punting them for profit we will not improve as a side.

We have to find a way of doing both and at a Club our size a bit of manageable Debt should not be a problem.
It is for an Investor though who wants a nice big fat Gregory Peck at the end of every season though.
Or like Peter Lawwell who get’s nigh on £.5m in Bonus even though there are large sections of plastic allover the ground most weeks.

as long as you’re not there, we might get fans supporting their team.
as for the Commonwealth Games – I thought it had already been explained that the decision to use CP was agreed about 10 years ago when Scottish teams didn’t have to pre-qualify. Good as PL is, I don’t think he has a crystal ball (if he was even in charge back then).
Next time you’re up at CP (if the zombies ever get into the SPL) have a look at the roads / area around the stadium and you’ll see that the decision to allow CP to be used for the CG was a brilliant one.

As I said before the first Astra game, I fear the worst in the Europa League but I hope i’m wrong. I know we can’t play amazing every game and that we have to win ugly and grind out results sometimes but this was only on the odd occasion (usually midweek games when it was windy, freezing and pouring down).
This season it feels like every game is a struggle and we have to labour and strive to get results against much inferior teams. We seem to be perennially underperforming and rarely look comfortable in a game and, like is said above, CP is no longer a fortress where players dread to play but is now like some sort of football bucket list item. Bring back the Thunder.

Nice to see you are back to your old optimistic self pre-Europe. Yes, we might struggle against clubs of this calibre simply because that is now our level in Europe and that is not just down to belt tightening on PL’s part (and I do not intend to lead his defence here by any means) but is very much the consequence of obscene moneys invested in the football darlings of UEFA and that organisation’s need to keep its representatives clothed and fed in garments and at banquets fit for kings. I think it is time for a reality check and for us to accept that in the current climate we will be limited to a few nervous exploits in Europe at one level or another with little or no hope of ultimate fulfilment. Sorrowful and ignominious as it may be, the glory days are over and no manager can alter that fact. Only money or being in a different league can change it. Our achievement now is more or less limited to taking part in these tournaments as against those clubs who are not able to even do that. We have been kidding ourselves about doing more for a lot longer than we are willing to acknowledge. However, I find it disappointing that many supporters will only get behind the club when it wallows in success. Genuine support is tested under fire. I said a few seasons ago that the club should forget about what it can or cannot win and invest in a period of sound rebuilding (see CS’s comment). Now is an ideal time when we could do so without any great threat to our domestic dominance where we can get away with rubbish for the most part and still win the league. I have always maintained that Stein would not have achieved 9 in a row if the club then known as Rangers had started to rebuild rather than buy success in the late 60s early 70s. Do not think this notion only came to Ibrox under Murray. Anyway, I am looking forward, yes with trepidation, to Thursday but also with hope for without it there is little reason to follow Celtic.

I am not sure about the venue in the photo but feel confident I can name some of the participants. I recognise Roy Aitken, Roddy McDonald, Tommy Burns, Danny McGrain and I think Frank McGarvey. I can not remember the ref’s name but he was said to be secretary to the then Archbishop of Edinburgh. The way he gave decisions against Celtic over the years I could quite believe it. They say your own can be the worst of all. Oh, and that’s me just under the rainbow looking for a pot of gold. Given my current financial state, I obviously did not find it.
