Celtic Diary Saturday August 30: Lawwellian Double Speak ?

Our glorious leader has spoken to the nation! And the nation has listened, discussed and has agreed on one thing….

He’s not looking very well,  is he ?

Lawwell on Celtic TV

One thing is apparent from the interview, he is hurting. A job like his is all encompassing. Its not as though when he gets in his car to go home at the end of the day he can switch off. The mind will be whirring, the phone will be ringing, and the red lights seem designed just for him.

When he gets home he can’t blot the job out and settle down to watch Breaking Bad on netflix for a couple of hours, especially with Kris Commons at the window waving his unsigned contract at him.

Or maybe he’s concerned at the response to the new catering deal, with an American conglomerate who put babies in their pies and charge a small fortune for fizzy sugar soaked water. ( They don’t actually put babies in their pies, although it may be worth considering, as  that would be a lot more palatable than the combination of biological trimmings that actually lies beneath the pastry. Personal taste, of course, in case their lawyers are reading this. Not that I give a toss. )

Then theres the upcoming AGM, where the Celtic Trust are lying in wait, with teeth and claws rightly sharpened.

They are not going to let the Living Wage issue go away. As they point out on their website, there are 29,000 of us shareholders, and only 2,000 or so use their vote. If we want this to happen, we are going to have to make it happen.

Celtic Trust 2014 Resolutions

And don’t forget his foray into the teenage music market with his new boy band;

Their single, a dance/ rap  version of the Wolftones “Helicopter Song ” isn’t doing as well as the original.

Oh, bollocks, thats playing in my head now…What have I done ?

As usual, Lawwell flustered beneath the studio lights, and didn’t say anything that we weren’t expecting. The idea to use Celtic tv is a step forward, though, because he is not subject to the interpretation of others, and can say what he wants.

This leaves us, the supporter, able to judge him for ourselves.

So, instead of me saying what I think, I’d like to hear your comments in the replies after you watch it.

Well, when I say I’m not going to offer my opinion, that would be a lie. But we still want yours, as they are at least equally valid.

Lawwell, it appears, had a plan. That plan involved strengthening in January for this seasons qualifiers. Being forced to mutually consent Neil Lennon, and bring in the inexperienced Ronny Deila plainly wasn’t part of that plan.

The idea was to bring in Teemu Pukki and Leigh Griffiths to fill the void left by Gary Hooper. That didn’t work, and there was a wee bit of panic when it became apparent that Anthony Stokes wasn’t going to chip in, and Kris commons is clearly worried about whether or not he has a future at Celtic. Quite why he feels he has to try so hard to impress is beyond me, but it does appear he is trying too hard.

So, when thrown back into the Champions League qualifiers, there were demands to sign a striker. We’ll never know if it would have worked, but the impact made by the other newcomer, Jo Inge Berget, suggest it would have made no difference.

Theres a lot of work to be done to get ready for the Europa League Group games, which saw Celtic drawn against Red Bull Salburg, Dimano Zagreb and Astra (Who ? They beat Lyon, thats bloody who ), but the first steps to a settled side will be taken this weekend, indeed, some have already been taken.

Stefan Secapovic is in. a five year deal, £2.4m heading out to Gijon ( Phonetically, thats a great title for a song… ).

Wakaso Mubarak is going to be a legend ( according to Wakaso Mubarak) , Scott Brown will soon be back, -Derek Johnstone confirmed that will be like a new signing.

Leigh Griffiths will be sent out on loan to Hibernian, we hear it’ll be announced on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk has told the club he wants to leave, according to the papers. That won’t bother Lawwell. He’s been touting him all week.

And it shouldn’t bother the support. If anything, it strengthens the argument for getting someone in on loan first, because it’s not only their ability that needs to be assessed, it’s their attitude.

And frankly, on van Dijks wedding night, I hope his balls catch fire and roll off the bed. His missus has probably planned that kind of evening for him sooner or later anyway, after his antics on the streets of Glasgow.

Thing is, Peter, we are all adults. If the news is bad, tell us. We can take it. Hell, we’ll even help you to sort it out.

But don’t try to pretend things are all rosy in the garden, when its beginning to appear like we haven’t even got a garden anymore.

It’s been sold off to developers.

Tomorrow sees Celtic at Dens Park, where they will be hosted and probably roasted by Dundee, under the enthusiastic management of former Celt Paul Hartley.

Time to get the show back on the road. Sleeves up and arms swinging. Don’t forget, theres always someone worse off than you….

In the diary yesterday was a picture of Islam Feruz, the greatest player of all time who left Celtic at the age of somewhere between 14 and 35, to join Chelsea for more money , to further his career, and more money. I know I mentioned money twice, but it is twice as important to him as his career is. He’s off to join a club I’ve never heard of now, and the look on his face shows how delighted he is at the prospect.

Not as delighted as some of us are, though. Little Rat.

Now, what about these guys . Whatever happened to them ?

I didn’t see it as Lawwell double speak. I thought he was honest and open. If you take the time to read the annual reports (That are audited independently) you can see we have struggled financially through the recession and probably the impact of the the other side of Glasgow’s demise. This has affected the overall turnover and has seen season tickets fall from 54,000+ to 40,000. TV money has fallen and no League or cup sponsor shows it is difficult in Scottish Football.

When a player is sold for £10 million you have to remember we don’t see all of that, there are agents fees, sell on % and other costs.

When we buy a player for £4 Million there are costs on top of that, agent fees, signing bonus, plus if he signs for £25,000 a week that’s an additional 1.3 Million in salary per season.

If you do well at Celtic and then Norwich or Crystal Palace come in for you (Or you get your agent to shop you around) You are looking at doubling you salary….always tempting in a short career.

We used to have the turnover of a mid table English Premier League team. However they now get £50 Million just from their TV deal and we are now the equivalent of a mid to lower English Championship team in terms of financial clout.

If you sign players to ensure we qualify for the champions League money…..you are taking the same chances that Leeds United took and a some what closer example.

Now that all said the current team is not good enough for the finances we have. I believe we need to improve youth development dramatically and improve the scouting network.

I believe Ronny is the correct man for the job….because I am not sure many others would take it given the difficult situation with regards to our wage structure and ongoing finances. Plus the expectations from the fans because we have had in recent memory the ability to bring in “Great players”……We won’t be doing that in the next 5-10 years unless something changes with regards to Scottish football or we end up in a multi-country European league.

It is not a great situation to be in and it is frustrating…..but it could get much worse if people decide to continue (Not start!!!!) to stay away from the ground and/or not renew season tickets. Which in fairness is their choice…..but this is a test of each and every one of us and our love of the club.

Continue to stay away from the games and call for Celtic to spend more money and this only goes one way.

We always need to challenge the club and board to ensure they work as hard as possible to put out the best team they can and get that team to play as good as they possibly can.

They have failed on both accounts just recently and we will see over the next 3-4 months to see if they have turned a corner. But as they Man Utd fans are having to do we are going to have to give them the time to see how things develop.

Negativity only ever breeds negativity and it is the easy option.

I actually wrote a rant pre-PL’s tv show stating these very points.
There is no money in Scottish football and if rangers2 don’t get promoted (I hope they don’t), the tv deal is likely to be torn up, which will mean even less money for Celtic.
The only way we can survive (if we stay in Scotland) is to buy cheap and develop them along with our own academy players and sell them on for a profit. There are several European teams who use this model successfully.
Basle, Olimpiacos & even Maribor don’t have big stars, but made the CL group stages. They have a system and develop young sters.
This is what we need to do – find a system that works for us and develop young players, keep them for a couple of years then sell them on for a profit, the money from this is then used to buy other young players and to support the academy.
We have had a great time laughing at the fiscal policy of rangers & rangers2 – surely that is lesson enough for us not to think about going down that road.
The current Celtic team could do with 4 or 5 players to make us good again. This would cost about £20 million and come with annual wages of approximately £4 million. We can’t sustain this.
Time to back PL and his vision – it’s the only way we will survive unless we either get out of Scotland or find a Saudi prince with money to burn.

Often it is not what you say as how you say it.

Every penny brought in in from selling players is reinvested in the club.

Not quite the same as every penny brought in selling players is spent in buying replacements.

Reminds me of the contentious share issue of some years ago where some punters thought that they were putting their hands in their pockets to buy new players.

Years later at agms it was still being explained, in a hot under the collar fashion that punters had misunderstood, and that their money had been ‘invested in the club’.

Peter to convincingly explain how the supporters of ‘one of the best run club’s in Europe, perhaps even the world’, have been as sick as parrots for the last few weeks.

If I remember correctly the Share issue was 2005-06 and was required to reduce debt of £19.33 Million – the issue raised £14.55 Million.

If we hadn’t raised that money we would not have been able to buy anymore players as we were heading in a dangerous direction of spending more than we were bringing in.

This was from the Martin O’Neill era….which I loved just as much as the next supporter….but it wasn’t sustainable.

All the figures are produced annually and have to be audited because we are a PLC….there are no slush funds or people taking money out for themselves.

There have been no dividends paid to shareholders for at least the last five years.

Now you can argue about how much we pay the directors and what additional items the club uses the money for (WIFI in the stadium, Celtic Live App….Changing the menu of the concession stands…etc etc)

But any complaining it needs to be done under the correct context otherwise you are just making things worse by continuing on with a theme that this club is hiding/siphoning off funds….when it is just not true.

I am as gutted as the next supporter at the moment and I have no involvement with the club in any capacity other than as a season ticket holder.

Peter Lawwell, ” We see ourselves as a Champions League club
now “.What a difference a year makes. This was the bold Peter’s
assertion,this time last year.
I would rather send Stokes to Hibs, before Griffiths.
Watch out for Soriano at Salzburg tearing us apart. He was a player that was at the top of Lenny’s 6M striker list.Liewell binned his list, told him to fck off,and informed his bum chum
John Park to continue bringing in duff strikers !!

Spot on HS, they don’t want us to have any hero’s any more, too much chance that we’ll get attached to them and they know the place would be in uproar when they decide to cash in or perish the thought, have to think about improving their contract. Gary Hooper was looking for £5k more per week. Enough said.

Imagine Dermott Desmond, Peter Lawwell, Ronnie Delia & all in a row. Now imagine them all as Pinatas
How long would the line be with fed up Celtic supporters wanting to take to them with a big stick to see what falls out?

why do you guys keep trotting this line out? Do you really think we don’t know all this. Why are these cavalier singing policies (gambling) hoping to unearth another lottery win acceptable to you? That’s why wasting money on crap like balde, bourichter, ambrose, berget is acceptable to these guys running out board.

Its way easier than getting ***footballers*** in (and russel would have cost 1m only) and having a genuine footballing policy. There are plenty of other examples. Grifiths is a decent player being kept out of the side because there is no concept of building a team for the future. only the fast lottery win.

Oh and that’s Ronnie Deila , though Delia is probably appropriate for a big Norwegian clueless Jessie.
Just don’t want any innocent Norwegians battered due to an administrative error on my part.

RICHARD LUNARDI YOU MAKE A LOT OF GOOD POINTS WHICH I AGREE WITH, HOWEVER YOU ARE WRONG SAYING NO DIVIDENDS HAVE BEEN PAID. PREFERENCE SHAREHOLDERS RECEIVE AN ANNUAL PAYMENT EACH AND EVERY YEAR – AND DERMOT HAS A HUGE CHUNK OF PERFERENCE SHARES

Richard Lunardi

Reply to  BONGO

Yes you are correct my apologies. I had looked on the Google Finance site and they showed ordinary shares as no dividend for the last five years.

Preferred shares appear to have received a dividend of:

2013 – £527,000
2012 – £544,000
2011 – £544,000
2010 – £544,000
2009 – £544,000

Plus Salaries to the board of

2013 – £1,436,489
2012 – £1,409,744
2011 – £1,230,221
2010 – £1,149,927
2009 – £1,149,927

Not exactly a small amount…

I would like to be correct in my understanding of where the money goes….so does any think it is more than that….and if so can you point me in the right direction to verify it?

As an aside a scheme to allow share holders to reinvest there dividend was put in place….but Dermot Desmond can’t take part in that as he would end up with more than 30% of the shares and would be legally required to make an unconditional offer for the rest of the share.

Celtic PLC is legally required to pay the dividend.

I think back to the days when we had Nicholas, McClair, mcgarvey, even le petite merde and don’t remember any particular European campaign that was spectacular. We had Seville of course. But the truth is since I can remember it’s been relatively unsuccessful. But how is it we now gage European (and hence season) success on xpions league qualification. Is it purely the football perspective or is it the financial Valhalla that has engulfed out thought process. Because let’s be honest, other than a few decent performances, the financial 2 fingers is what we have been throwing at others. Not pure beautiful inventive football. So how is it that while winning league after league with a few more secured no doubt that we require that same Valhalla and are apoplectic that it is not happening in current climate. If we were to spend 30 million on 3 players it would not win us the xpions league. Not when teams are spending 70 on one. The time is now to prepare for when Scotland’s football income increases to a point where you can hope to bring in better players and at the same time to develop youth. Some should remember the days when we could have competed in Europe and didn’t because of a now defunct team and bad management. Sorry but the bar is first and foremost home domination when they appear back. Which they will. Benfica or red bull. It’s all the same, without a serious UEFA alteration it won’t change. N that’s been shown for 47 years.

If money is so tight why do we keep buying shite players. Is it a speculate to accumulate policy. Where it doesn’t matter a fuck if we play shite and embarrass ourselves just so long as we unearth an EPL transfer or 2 for pocket money? I fucking think so

fredcdobbs

btw I am completely fed up with these smoke and mirror arguments people keep trotting out telling us all we cannot afford to buy a-la oniel.

Do these guys really believe we don’t already know that? do they fuck, they just see it a another opportunity to get on the soapbox and preach the bleeding obvious (cunts) to make themselves look like the oracles of football.

What I and other supporters want is for celtic to once again start to buy footnball players. Speculating the little we have on wankers like balde, borichter, ambrose, berget et al hoping for another lottery win is way more cavalier than buying good journeymen like russel (and using managers like lennon). There are plenty other examples rather than getting a proper footballing system in place. (that’s hard that is)

Griffiths is a decent player being wasted by these cavalier signing policies and shitey ron manager tactics.
