Celtic v Hapoel Be’er Sheva : Player Ratings

Talk about a game of 2 halves…Holy Moses( is that allowed ? – Ed) .

This was truly one of those “Were you there?” Euro nights at Celtic Park..drama, goals galore and a few “What the f*ckity f *ck” moments!

So how did the Ratings pan out…lets see below…

PLAYER RATINGS

Craig Gordon – 7

Not a lot to do bar pick the ball out the net twice and make a cracking save to stop the rot in the 2nd half. Some may cite that both goals were at his near post and he could have did better for at least the first reply but realistically the fault wasnt at the keepers door. Composed in possession and always looking to make the right distribution decision. Could  genuine competition be just what our current No 1 needs,so far at least it isnt doing Craigy any harm

Kieran Tierney – 7

It might be seem harsh but again there were a few early question marks for our young superstar defender but once he found his feet he was back up and down the line like the trouper that he is. One excellent shot in the second half had the crowd applauding along with his manager. Still looking to build  relationship with Scott Sinclair so theres more room for improvement down the left hand side to come.

Kolo Toure – 7

A rock of calm in a maelstrom of manic at times. Try saying that with a few sambucas!. Kolo was the epitome of calm and then started surges up the park when someone ( bar Broony) was needing to take the challenge forward, One such charge eventually led to the 2nd goal. Needs to ensure such charges arent a gamble though as did find himself out of position a few times in 2nd half and even got the classic “idiotic” Andy Walker yellow card for kicking the ball away. A great addition but with returning defenders it will be good to see his quality and enthusiasm targeted exactly where needed over the whole season.

Eoghan O’Connell – 7

Another night of vital Euro experience for another young Celt. Made 2 crazy passes in the first half that had fans gasping in fear but he got away with them on this occasion but was calm and aggressive when needed at other times.Less we forget the pressure and expectation we are all placing on such young shoulders.

Mikel Lustig – 6

The out ball in the first half every time the ball was towards our backline. Had a good first half and got up and down the park well enough but took a knock before half time and made way for Janko in the second half once the comeback attempt was ramping up. Another important player to be used exactly where and when needed this whole season.

Calum McGregor – 6

Rather unfortunate to get taken off for Biton but ultimately that decision was proven correct. Had an industrious first half without exactly shining but kept it clean and tidy and rotated the ball well when in possession. No flash but plenty of effort which is needed in a side of Oor Blessed Brendans.

Scott Broon – 9

Simply outstanding, Talk about rising to a challenge, Broony was a whirling dervish in the 1st half and Hapoel must have been asking for a drugs test given the effort the Captain had put in during that first 45. Dipped in the 2nd half and without that drive, the team dropped to Hapoels level and allowed them back in with 2 goals. Sure enough, up stepped the Captain once more to drag them over the line with a great goal the cherry on top of a wonderful performance. Beware Joey, Beware!

James Forrest – 7

Great shift once again from the wee man and a sublime cross to the shout from Griffiths for the second goal. Kept going at them for the whole game and always taking instruction from his manager so clearly in tune with the demands of his attack and defence duties.Dare I say it, even the crowd were forgiving whenever an attack attempt failed…is wee Jamesie’s days as Scapegoat over?

Tom Rogic -6

Scored a goal after a classic reverse Harald Schumacher from Scott Sinclair and to be honest, that was about it. Some nice footwork now and again but still more style over substance for this critic. “He’s not a 90 minute player is he?” sighed my daughter while watching him depart. I was surprised he lasted so long in all honesty. Hopefully this is Rogic finding his feet rather than on full steam or the question shall remain : Can a team of Brendans afford such a luxury?

Scott Sinclair – 6

Helped make the 1st goal with his  “robust enthusiasm” and made the 2nd goal with a lovely lay off for Forrest to make the cross to Griffiths. Other than that he seemed to get a little frustrated with himself in the first half and was trying too hard with high long range shots etc. Still he kept going and after taking some instruction from his manager had a great chance to score the 6th but the keeper blocked his effort which was unlucky given the impressive drive and determination shown by Sinclair so late in a draining game,

Leigh Griffith – 8

Another night of Cometh the question, cometh the answer from our star striker. Was as  quiet as a mouse during first half when forced to play with his back to goal but then one shout at the back post and bang, a perfect downward header and a goal. Cue a lovely run and leap into the managers arms..and a wee kiss perhaps?. Then a peach of a free kick for his second just before the half time whistle and a great salute to his beloved and loving Green Brigade fans. Quieter 2nd half but then sent in the perfect cross for Dembele to get the Hoops back on track. Truly Leighding the way in style these days.

SUBS

Dembele – 6

Our Young Emile Heskey came on and immediately started making his physical presence felt and soon enough rose high and banged in a great corner for our 4th ( well he or Biton scored..check out the video below). Easy to forget he is just a boy, as it is for a few in this Celtic side..if we can all have patience, this really could be one long happy adventure.

Biton – 5

Was asked to steady the ship and did it very well. Will probably start next week in Israel on this showing as ensured Hapoel didnt get the ball back as easily as they had found it in the early stages of the 2nd half.

Janko – 5

Another good performance from the right back. Got up the park when needed and got himself involved in the game which was very fraught at the time of his entry. Made a great tackle towards the end to help ease the fans fears. Has another chance to impress, at least domestically with Lustig probably rested for this weekends game.

MANAGER

(11/10 for the first half and 3/10 for the first half of the second half and 8/10 for the second half of the second half. I make that an average of over 7.3/10 so lets round up to 7.5.)

Rodgers – 7.5

A perfect first half saw his side blow Hapoel off the park and the Manager must have been sighing to hear the half time whistle. As feared, his team lost their high level of energy and allowed Hapoel back into the game with 2 goals. Brendan could have looked to make some subs at Half time if he had any wishes to ensure a clean sheet at 3-0 as he would have known Hapoel would increase their attacks in the second 45.

However, the damage was done and rather than shrug, Rodgers picked his subs and once again, the cap needs doffed as a Rodgers sub came on and scored to save the game at a critical stage in the proceedings while his other 2 subs steadied the ship. 5 goals is always impressive but from a mangement and team perspective, a few lessons will have been learnt here by our leader. and as long as we can play the next 90 mins out without a 3-0 deficit then no-one will complain about that mental start to the second half tonight.

Desi,

For goodness sake, surely you have an opinion on what happened tonight. You either support it or you do not! Sitting on the fence will only see it happen again. If that is what you want…fine. Just say it.

I think Brendan has been coaching the fans too, even at 3-2 I thought;@ we can get a result out there,”Malmo it wasn’t .
Lustig got an injury and when we scored our third he was doing exercises as if he got a kick or a strain.
I think he should have been off at half time, he limped after his opponent for the second goal, couldn’t sprint. For the first Toure was far too far forward out of position and O’Connell didn’t get tight enough to his man albeit hex was covering for his central defender partner.
I still think we will get attached out there, an epic night , great spirit , Cektic Park rocked!

Gordon did better than I thought he would but still looks shaky in distribution. Anticipated a couple of balls towards the box for the first time I’ve seen him. At fault for first goal.
O’Connell was taken aside during the hiatus leading up to LG’s great FK. From BR’s body language during that little “conversation ” my guess is that O’Connell was told in terms something like

“son, you’re not even the same class as Paul McGugan let alone Stones or Beckenbauer: hoof the feckin’ ball like Kolo does! Capisce? Or do you want to play in the Irn Bru Challenge Cup, maestro?”

Forrest must give BR great blowjobs. A shitebag. With zero game intelligence. My hair! Ooh! A tackle! Ooh! My hair!
That girl’s wearing Harmony Row hairspray.

CFC team positives manyana but closing on

How on earth did my brother and I get back to the south side by car parked in Brigton 45 minutes before the SODS bus. Tonight is not exceptional. Almost as though there were a DOBs agenda in traffic management…Heaven forfend.

Cortes,
I notice you don’t give James Forrest any credit for the excellent cross for the second goal?

Also how is he a shitebag?

Desi,

Pretty much agree with your assessment. I would nudge Gordon down one because he could have stopped, at least, the first goal. I thought Janko was poorer than your call on him.

Thought Mcgregor at fault for first goal, stopped and put his hand up for offside instead of pressing for the ball.Gordon,s distribution was far better than in previous games. As for Broonie ,playing like a young thing running the show again brilliant.
Only half time in the tie but can see us winning over there.
In Brendan we trust.

Mon the Bhoys,Great game tonight.Apart from there two goals,We were like a Team reborn completely different animal from the Malmo Game.Brendans got us playing nicely but lapses in our defence needs working on.Send on Next Week. Here is hoping Broony doesnt pick up any knocks and keeps going,Bartons dug himself One Big BlackHole. Its going to be Echoey doon there Jobeth Farton.HH COYBIG!!!We cant throw this opportunity away.

Desi,
When big Kolo Toure started out on his ‘ bear ‘ charge to set up the second goal, it reminded me of big Roy Aitken, remember the ” feed the bear, feed the bear, feed the bear” chant from the Jungle?
I would like to give all the players big pass marks last night, but i want to highlight the contribution of Leigh Griffiths last night, he is a goal machine and he should start getting the credit his goals merit.
Leigh? I love you son.

As for the Palestinian flag waving supporters? Proud of each and every one of them HH

As BR said in the after-the-match interview: This is not the finished product but there’s much to be admired. At the opposition’s goals the defense had fallen into SPL mode where mistakes don’t always get punished but I’m sure BR will be going over the digital recording with them. In the after-the-match interview he excused the defense’s failure simply as lack of experience and easily remedied.I think we could be in for a few surprises in the group stages this season. Given a generous draw Celtic might even make the last 16.

Iljas,
We need to be very strong defensively from front to back on Tuesday, beer Sheva can play and it’ll take a very strong team performance to get through this tie.

BR will choose a counterattacking team for sure. It will also be practise for the group stage when we face tougher opposition.

Still a lot to be worked on but a manager who can remedy it,I t still think ewe are lightweight in midfield apart from broony, mcgregor is not good enough at this level, rogic disapeared, also janko gave the ball away a lot when he came on,as my pal said last night typical celtic performance, coasting first half, lgave away two silly goals, came on strong again, overall delighted with result,in brendan we trust.

Corktim,
I agree with what you say here but all the guys you mention put in a hell of a shift tho.
I was actually looking for a bit more from Sinclair last night, he was quiet at times.
But you know what, Beer Sheva played some good stuff at times.

Correct Monti. To do what Celtic did last night can only bode well for the future. Transforming a side who were dire under the Norwegian nobody, with little investment, has been quite breathtaking. We will only get better. Be’er Sheva were a big strong unit and apart from the poor ten minute spell, I thought the performance was very, very good. They will have to commit more bodies forward in the 2nd leg and our pace will give them all sorts of problems.

Monti Not taking from the effort all the players put in,but if we are in the group stages just thinking of the weakness in the team that could be exploited by better sides,If I am being too critical sorry, proud of that performance last night.

Exactly what i was thinking at the time Monti, Kolo is like Big Roy Aitken. Soem idiot in the Scotsman implied he was ike a poor man’s VVD! Obviously the hack is oo young to remember ‘The Bear’.
No one has criticised James Forrest more then me. I simply didn’t understand why the guy was getting another chance. But the view expressed by Cortes is very harsh. He played quite well.
McGregor and O’Connell (and Craig Gordon) all share the blame for the first goal and we collectively shit ourselves meaning that 30 seconds after the restart you could see a second coming, which it did after another minute. At school you would have been subbed for allowing a guy to easily get passed you then sticking your hand up to claim off-side. O’Connell was too slow in getting across and some of his tackles are rash to say the least. he will get himself sent off due to bad decision making. Hopefully, this will be coached out of him but it isa little worrying. I will be much happier with Sviatchenko back. He is a calm head and Big Kolo will be more confident in rampaging forward knowing Erik has his back. We could see this a couple of times in every game and it will result in goals as it did last night. I also think you were harsh on Sinclair. I thought he was excellent at times, and the strength he showed to make the chance at the end was brilliant. He could have lifted it over the keeper though.
With the same team in Israel I think we may lose three. they will be confident of scoring three as well. If they can do it at Celtic Park they will be able to do it on their own ground. But they will not be able to stop Celtic scoring. They have nothing to defend, they need to attack from the get go. with our pace we will create chances and I think we may score to or three over there.
They are not great team but they are a better football team than I thought they would be. But they are obviously not as solid defensively as we were led to believe. The first half demonstrated this. they will be forced to play a much more open attacking formation and we will get our chances. Who would bet against Leigh not taking his?
Griffiths is on his way to making himself as big a legend as Henrik Larsson. I know that sounds preposterous but if he stays with Celtic for the full duration of his contract he will reach 200 goals for Celtic. How much is he worth just now? If Ross McCormack is going for 12.5 million what is the value of Griffiths? because he plays in Scotland I reckon he would fetch about 6-7 million right now. He is worth at least double. I really hope he is going nowhere though.
Scott Brow, hough, deserved your accolade as Man of the Match. He was outstanding from start to finish. Let’;s hope he can keep this up for the duration of the competition. We really need this kind of leadership.
The manager was also outstanding and although I still have a few wee doubts I continue to revel in being wrong just a few weeks ago. But it is early in the season and only half time in this game. How he manages the return will tell us much. Hail Hail.

John we all have our favourites but i have always liked James Forrest, he is going to be a big player for us in the coming season.

Hope so, Monti. As long as he is in the Hoops and giving 100% he will get my full backing. Will never boo him at Paradise, Save the criticism dfor the pub and the internet. I have no problem with Forrest. He is undoubtedly a talented lad but the disinterested half-arsed Forrest I have no time for. Pull on the Hoops and you give 100%. I thought that James had forgot that but maybe I was wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time. he seems to run in an awkward manner though. Mut be due to his Pelvic or back oroblems. Good luck to him. But I thought he played pretty well last night. His movement off the ball was better and his cross for Griff was very good. would still have Roberts in the team before him though.

Not being critical of O’Connell but the defence will be much stronger and, importantly, calmer, with Big erik back. Hope that is next Tuesday. Their first goal could have been avoided about three times. Hopefully, Brendan will sort this out because it has been a problem for years. We would lose hardly any goals domestically if we would just fully concentrate. Couple of crazy back passes as well, icluding one by Kolo, who should know better. You know Big, hapless Efe would have been punised for one of these. Better a lucky player than a good one!

Griffs was brilliant last night. That pass for Sinclair that set up Rogic goal was world class. As were his two goals. Broony was a real captain with that display. (obviously last season was playing through injuries). I think Sinclair tried too much last night but I am sure he will have much better nights as he has a football brain. Jamesy is improving this season and is only 24. Hopefully under BR his decision making and passing will get better. Agree would rather have wee Paddy in there but the team is looking very strong and will improve as the season goes on. Great to see E OConnell given a chance ahead of Efe. Yes he made a few mistakes but again only young. I watched the youngsters (under 20) the last few games and Nesbitt, Miller, Hendry, McCart and Crossan are all real class. Most of the rest could walk into the big team too without any real problems. Looking forward to a 2-2 draw in Isreal next week.
