Celtic Diary Sunday July 17: Celts Practice Winning 2-1

Far be it from me to be a harbinger of doom, but right up until kick off on Wednesday, I still be thinking thats the most likely score against the Imps.

Thats despite all the evidence from yesterdays game pointing to the Gibraltans being on the end of a scoreline that will prompt them to write to UEFA and ask not to be considered for this level of football again. something their FA seriously considered after losing six goals to Gordon Strachans Scotland, and still has people pointing at them and laughing.

Celtic beat Wolfsburg 2-1, despite falling behind to an early own goal as Eoghan O’Connell got his name on the scoresheet,  As soon as he calms down a bit and realises he wont be entirely judged on what happens in these friendlies, we may see a little more composure and thus a little more of his ability.

Celtic fought back with goals from Calum McGregor and Ryan Christie to get the hoops back on the winning trail.

Someone who is losing the nerves and adapting is Kristoffer Ajer, who is improving with every appearance, and Brendan Rodgers, speaking to the press after yesterdays game, has noticed;

“I thought he was nervy when he first came in, but he settled and can become a very good player,”

“He’s adjusting to the speed and has a lot of potential.

“Every player is under consideration if I see enough in training and games, irrespective of age.”

Well, almost everyone.

There were concerns after the game that part time model and full time footballer Erik Sviatchenko wouldn’t be ready for the Imps game after his hair was all messed up following a clash with Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio,

Celtic's Erik Sviatchenko is treated on the pitch

but a crack team of hairdressers were on standby ready to deal with such an event, and he should be fine for Wednesday, but we are informed it was touch and go. Or Wash and Go. Or something.

“He’s okay,”

“He has spoiled his good looks for a few days but he is fine.

“There was obviously a clash of heads and he was a bit swollen below the eye but apart from that he is fine. I believe he will be fine.”

The manager also gave us his thoughts on the game…

“It was a really good day It was a real honour and pleasure to walk out there in the first game and to have the turnout we had today was fantastic.

“On top of that I think the players performed and we had a double training session yesterday where we worked them really hard and intensely and I think today, even on the back end of that, to have that physicality in the game, how we pressed the game and created opportunities, I was very pleased.

“It was a good day all round for us in terms of our preparation, and was another step for us.

“We set up differently in both halfs and the players coped very well. Over the course there were real good moments of pressing and creating chances.

“I think we had seven real good chances in the first-half then we set up slightly differently but, again, minimised Wolfsburg to minimal opportunities but looked a threat going forward so it was good.”

He also took time to tell us he wasn’t going to talk about Celtics next possible opponents in Europe, Astana, of Khazakstan, which isn’t in Europe, or Zalgirus Vilnius, which sounds more like a left back we’ve been looking at for a few years.

“The only concentration is on the next game.

“The object was to come out on Wednesday at the end of the game and be through to the next round.

“If we get through in that, and we expect to go through, we will look to the next challenge.”

Good thinking. There will be plenty of time to worry about whichever one of those we play, should we overcome the Gibraltans.

It was a good result, and a better performance than of late, but lets get it into context, as it was only the second outing for Wolfsburg in their pre season run, as these selected comments note;

VfL Director of Sport Klaus Allofs: “That was a very good test, which considering the level of difficulty, maybe came a bit too soon for us, as Celtic have been in their preparations for longer. There were a number of scenes in which that was very visible. There was a lot of tempo in the game, but considering the way the match went, the defeat was unnecessary. It’s no real surprise that we had fitness deficits in a number of situations. At this stage of the preparations, we are just not as far along as Celtic.”

Robin Knoche: “It’s a pity that we lost this game, but we still need to find ourselves as a team. We haven’t yet got all of our sequences studied and at times we lacked the necessary communication, but some things did work out quite well. We have quite a bit to work on in some intensive weeks ahead.”

Paul Seguin: “In the first half, we played quite well – especially in our attacking efforts. At the back, we at times lacked the communication we need, but that will change! I am delighted about my goal, but it’s a real shame we didn’t win.”

The lack of signings at Celtic is worrying some sections of the support, well, all sections of the support, and there is still a lot of speculation.

As ever, the limited period that allows for signings means that players and agents will wait as long as they possibly can in case something better comes along, or , as is the case with Celtic, when the club is under pressure to do business, they will start to ask for silly money.

And with Celtic, silly money, in the eyes of the board, is anything above minimum wage with a fixed term contract….

No, i haven’t forgotten that “job ” they’re advertising in customer service.

And neither has one of our readers, who goes under the name of Steve Brown, on twitter… ( maybe because thats his name )

He sent this to John Paul Taylor, the supporters liaison officer at the club, and as we know, he does read these things..

As a Celtic Season Ticket holder, who helps fund the operation of the club, I would like to register my complete disgust at the advert for a Customer Service Operator at the Celtic Ticket Office on a Zero Hours basis.

This person is expected to “provide world-class” service and yet will be employed on a zero hours basis!

This should be wholly anathema to the ethos at Celtic FC which was founded on a much prouder basis.

One of the first things Ann Budge did was to get rid of Zero Hours contracts at Tynecastle. My view is shared by every Celtic supporter I know, and I mix with a very diverse group of Celtic fans.

There’s lots to be proud of at Celtic, but this is a stain on the character of the club.

We need to stand above the crushing of the most vulnerable in society, and stop contributing to their need to go to food banks to survive.

It can be done, it should be done and must be done.

Please pass the message on.

It might be worth you reminding him as well, and asking him to pass the message on…

Anyway, back to the lack of incoming-and outgoing, to be fair-and as ever, theres a lot more speculation than information.

Joe Flanagan, the Liverpool right back who managed eight games last season for the Mersey club, has been added to the list of former players that Rodgers is supposedly looking at, presumably because he’s looked at Saidy Janko and decided that Dedryck Boyata can fill the position of frightened rabbit for the next few months.

Shane Duffy is “taking his time ” and there are tales of a swap deal which may involve James Forrest/Gary Mackay Steven or anyone else that Anthony Stokes is missing . Owen Coyle , Blackburns manager, may yet return to Celtic Park with his chequebook, because they still use cheques in that part of the world. Not necessarily their own, though.

With the template for new players already in place, who knows who could be the next head superimposed onto a Blackburn shirt-

Nir Biton didn’t feature yesterday, as he’s hurt his hip, or says he has anyway, and all we know about that is his agent wishes it was his fingers because of the repeated text messages along the lines of “have you found me anywhere yet lol “

Neither did Stefan Johansen, another rumoured to be wanting away, a tale which gained a little more credibility when the Norwegian was spotted on the southbound Bothwell service station on the M74..

The third of the midfield trio which has been under a little pressure over the last few months, captain Scott Brown, got to play yesterday.

And he got some praise from the boss;

“Scott was outstanding.”

Its a start, I suppose. By Wednesday he could be out running, and the following week he could be out dribbling, tackling and passing.

Watching a rerun of the Lincoln game with my mother in law, ( she likes to watch people arguing, and often comes to our house for that reason ) who is deaf, I got to “hear ” a few of his remarks to Lincoln players, and suffice to say its alright winding them up, and I don’t mind a little disrespect, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if one of their players goes through him on Wednesday…

Have a look back and see ……

Brown likes to wind players up, I’ve no problem with that, but it does help if you get your own performance right first, otherwise you end up looking a little stupid, and no amount of staring at someone will change that. Then it just looks like you’ve forgotten what you were going to say.

Anyway, Rodgers continued…

“His intelligence, his aggression, the way he really manages the team on the field has been very impressive.

“I was really happy with the midfield against Wolfsburg. You saw how dynamic they were in the first half.”

Fair enough. Things are looking up.

Roll on Wednesday…

Theres one other thing I spotted.

Remember the early talk about Steve Gerrard… ? Talk that hasn’t entirely died down yet ?

If there’s any truth in this wee snippet below, , I’d have him in tomorrow.

He could be just what we need.

Whats in the news-well, some Hibernian fans , and some other football fans have been in court after the Hampden Massacre back in May, which saw the credibilty of certain Scottish journalists brutally murdered.

From the BBC…

Four Hibs fans have admitted their part in a pitch invasion at the end of the Scottish Cup final.

David Jack, 19, Bryan McCabe, 45, Steven Gordon, 28, and Alexander Lanni, 22, ran onto the Hampden Park pitch after Hibs played Rangers on 21 May.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Jack, of Edinburgh, also admitted pushed Rangers player Andy Halliday.

And Gordon, also of Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to kicking an unknown man while he was on the ground.

Each of the men either ran towards or approached Rangers fans and gesticulated in a threatening or aggressive manner or behaved aggressively.

Football banning orders

They were among hundreds of fans who spilled on to the pitch after the full time whistle at the match which Hibs won 3-2.

It led to scenes of disorder among a small number of supporters which “appalled” the Scottish Football Association.

In court, Gordon was fined £566 and given an 18-month football banning order.

McCabe, also from Edinburgh, was given the same length of order and a £400 fine.

Sentence was deferred on Jack, from Edinburgh, until next month for a social work report and on Lanni, from Livingston, to call alongside his trial in December for allegedly assaulting a man at Hampden, which he denies.

Three other football fans denied charges of running on to the pitch after the game.

George Henderson, 49, from Penilee, is alleged to have behaved in an aggressive manner towards opposition fans and challenge an opposing fan to fight and attempt to punch them.

Robert Barr, 19, from Kilbirnie, denies entering the field and approaching rival fans, brandishing a chair and behaving in a threatening manner as well as assaulting a man by kicking him on the body.

Robert Smith, 24, from Glasgow, is also accused of entering the field, behaving in an aggressive manner, approaching opposing fans and waving his arm in the air, and assaulting someone by kicking them on the body.

Sheriff Kenneth Hogg granted bail for each of them and Barr and Lanni have special conditions not to attend any football matches until the outcome of their cases.

So subtle you would hardly notice it, but one is left to wonder why the club supported by the latter three isn’t mentioned. Wonder which one it was ?

Chelsea , maybe ?

Fridays Diary contained this picture, prompting all manner of witty replies;

Joe Flanagan, the latest, joins Duffy,Ward,Gunter,Allan,Toure,Canoe and Gerrard et all as the pish is ripped out of the Cellic support.Andybhoy is correct they have had 7 months to target and sign up new players for positions that require to be filled, but still the safe standing area looks great.FFS someone should tell them we are a FITBA CLUB.
I have some sympathy for Efe,he joins Forrest as the weekly scapegoat,Forrest came on in one game for the last 10 mins.we got beat and HE is pillored, three International Managers have picked him,but somehow he is always picked on.
Efe is a R.B. for Nigeria,he will never ever be a Centre Half cos he canny read the game and is ALWAYS caught on the wrong side of the forward,if he was played at his best position R.B.he wouldnt be the bomb scare that he is,buy a decent Centre Half and gie the bhoy a break, play a settled side and watch them progress, sell the 1 mill.mids cos they also need regular fitba to succeed, they IMHO would be better to go for there own sake, they HAVE got talent.H.H.

Mike its a myth that efe is a right back , he has been a centre back his whole career , he changes for nigeria because they have better in that position. Charlie, we do not know if another club has come in for Forrest,he is still under contract and if he has made clear that he wants to stay, then that is between him and Rodgers. He IMHO had nothing to prove to any Manager not like the other players mentioned and we all know that personalities can clash,my opinion on D.is that he was a very inexperienced manager who favoured some players over others.I cannot believe that a player with many International caps would not command a fee, perhaps that is the stumbling block.

Monti

Charlie Saiz,
I don’t think there is any issue with James’s attitude at all, he like Kris Commons was vastly underused by Deila.
This was because Deila didn’t know what he was doing.

Reply to  Monti

I can understand the defence of Forrest by some of you due to the years of Service at the Club and due to the fact he has shown some real quality at times throughout his career thus far.
However at 25 years of age now it would seem to me the promise has failed to materialize and James has been going through the motions a bit in recent years?
I noticed a spark in him when he came on against Wolfsburg a new energy that’s been clearly missing (for whatever reason) let’s hope whatever it was that has held him back is now in the past.
If any team had tabled an offer for James we would know about it same goes for any of our players because the agents would not be slow in leaking it out in their efforts to get a better deal.
The fact NO CLUB HAS for either Forrest or Commons for that matter just backs up what I already think.
ie both re overrated by Celtic fans in general.
Such is the level of player we now bring in or produce I would venture to suggest our levels of expectation now far outstrip our actual abilities at Celtic.
I read somewhere yesterday Owen Coyle at Blackburn is interested in Forrest?
I would not be suprised if he ended up down here.
Just my opinion based on what I see that’s all.
I respect your’s no matter how shite I may or may not think it is.

Del, Efe will never ever be a competent centre half, you need to position yourself properly, this bounce beat him is rubbish, because if you read the game and position yourself properly then the bounce means nothing. That is why he is contiually caught on the wrong side of the forward and fouls to bring him down.

If you can read a game then you position yourself to anticipate, bounces,he is ALWAYS caught behind the striker I.E. in the wrong position. If you look at the goal he was slightly behind the forward,he should have been on the goal side ffs.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  mike

Look at the goal again please Mike.
For me it is a simple ball over the top which catches both Ambrose AND Svietchenko out.
However Efe’s pace allows him to reach the ball BEFORE the striker he clearly overshoots his run and miss reads the bounce and on that surface the striker has the upper hand.
Svietchenko meanwhile was missing in action due to being to slow.
https://youtu.be/L9FUNt-jSHY
That striker knows that pitch will know the bounce in different conditions and would have been anticipating the bounce.
Efe should have, could have done better but again at least he got there I am more concerned about the fact the striker highlighted he had faced Erik previously and knew he had him for pace.
But hey let’s all pan Efe cause he after all is the fall guy for most.
There were players struggling allover the park with the bounce unfortunately for Ambrose he found himself wanting at the very worst time.

mike

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Charlie I agree with you about Eric and the pitch and there is no doubt that local pitch knowledge gave the striker the edge in this case. However it is the same recurring fault with Efe that his positional sense and reading of the game makes him IMHO unsuitable for the C.B. role.Having said that,he never ever hides and is very honest and without doubt tries his hardest in every game.We all have our own thoughts about various players and I still believe that we should have better players at C.B.including Boyata and Sumanovic.

I have replied (ether bound) here’s the goal and to me it is fairly clear BOTH Efe and Erik were caught out with the long ball BUT ONLY EFE was quick enough to make up the ground on the CF but unfortunately for him the bounce beat him and he ended up going past the ball.
A shit surface never helped in this case as the forward obviously having played on it no doubt hundreds of times expected the bounce.

The Famous Glasgow Celtic, BEATEN by a team from Gibraltar. I know we don’t care if we win, lose or draw but do the players realise how much that one hurt? “We are just back fae oor summer holidays”, “It was 40 degrees”, “The plastic pitch was the worst ever”…etc etc etc. I really felt for all the Bhoys and Ghirls who would be in close proximity to the ‘same flies’ for the rest of the week. I’ve been on the sunny south coast (see, it does have something going for it Ralph!) for over 30 years and every neutral who knows me and my love of Celtic seemed to make contact! It even got mentioned during a business presentation! Was at a social do Friday night and my G&W credentials was mentioned, next thing it was like total strangers wanted to have a pop, where they were oblivious to the above ‘excuses’….it is only the result they see. So where am I going with this? Well, does anyone remember the Tommy Twists interview the day after we lost 5-1 at Ibrox? Tommy was hurting so much just like us and he showed it. I just hope Mr Rogers can instil this frame of mind into the players he keeps and brings in and that they all realise this is a way of life for so many of us, where we cannot shut it off. This post has been simmering since Tuesday night so I eventually decided to get it out of my system! The next best thing will be for the players to restore some of our pride (the result will never be forgotten by friend or foe!) and bury the Imps on Wednesday by playing “pure, beautiful, inventive football”!

Feared the worst yesterday. Their warm up was well set up and game specific whilst ours hasn’t changed much. They are all big, physical units and athletic, an area where I feel we are lacking. We stopped them playing out from the back with the front two splitting their defence sometimes backed up with Mc Gregor and Armstrong making the keeper kick. Agree about O’Connell, not feart to take the ball now and talked constantly but gave it away under no pressure too often Their goal, although a big deflection actually came from a throw in to Armstrong who dispossessed himself..KT, was again good going forward although Lustig’s man gave him a harder time. Middle was fluid and moved the ball much quicker to the front two. The thing that stood out for me was we played as a team, a good energy (maybe because they knew they were coming off at half time) I know they were missing Draxler and Schurrle but we played well, had more of the possession and deserved the win. The GB were superb and again gave great support throughout.

I tought the team played well in the first 20-25 minutes, the defence is a disaster waiting to happen. Against a decent team in competitive match we look as if we will leak loads of goals. O’Connell does not look good enough. And we are now trying to shoe-horn AJer into the centre back position. It is so transparent it is laughable. Rodgers will say he has every confidence in the boy hence saving the cash. Until he makes an arse of it. The Celtic support has been shat on again. No preparation for the CL qualifiers yet again. And the players we are now being linked to. Flanagan, permanently injured and some guy Forest want rid of. Our board are a carbon copy of the scumbags at Ibrox. Thieving Tory liars, who are contemptuous of the people who pay their huge salaries. But is Brendan in on it? Or does he have the same roel as Ronny? We were told there was money but is there?

John and Mike,

I know as much as anyone else, which is next to nothing. All most of us can offer is opinions based on what we observe. So here is my “next to nothing”. BR is not a toadie. He will emerge as his own man. Ultimately, it may lead to him leaving the club but he is not there to take only what he is given. He knows who he wants to bring in and is waiting to get the right men. That is the reason for the delay. I hope he sticks to his guns, else we shall have more of the shambles that we had with the strikers and the 649 midfielders that we have acquired. Mike, I agree we need some physicality in the team, especially at CH.

Some clubs are going to pick up bargains because we have too many mids and several need to be discarded without us knowing their true potential/value.

Allan….I do not know if he will make it here. He needs to play to develop and I am not sure either the management or the fans will give him that time. The nature of what he does is such that he will make mistakes….many passes wil be intercepted and the ball turned over, but his skill is something we need.

I Think our scouting system is too limited. There are big strong CH in Iceland, Scandinavian countries and Eastern European countries that are waiting to be picked up by wealthier nations. Why cannot we target them?

I could go on but that increases the chance that my post will disappear into the InterWeb somewhere.

Let’s give it some time and hope. If it goes pearshaped this time The fallout will be a catastrophe.

The Celtic season ticket holders, are as ‘world class’ as the zero hour contracts offered by the CFC board the way they are treated. Well done to Steve an e Mail on its way.
Overall thought the team played reasonably yesterday, Allan had a good game.
Agree with the comments regarding the lack of strength in defence, it badly needs some of the £15million pound allegedly promised to Rdodgers by the board.
I think the caption picture is Ron L Hubbard growing balls.
We will beat the Imps on Wednesday, but after that with the curren team we could do a Delilah.

Surely the Flanagan story is rubbish. The guy has played about 20 games in over 3 years. With Simunovic looking like a sick note we don’t need another. Are we employing Rangers medical staff? i thought there were to be no more projects or risks. Players ready for the first team were to be signed. Good grief.

The centre back position is a shambles to be honest, and instead of hoping if Jose gets back to full fitness,we should buy a typical no nonsense centre half. There must be some out there willing to come to Celtic.
The scouting system network seems to be on midfield and Forward players.
We need a right back janko fisher sorry not up to what a Celtic player should be.
Lustig Eric Tierney and Izzy are the only players we can trust in defensive positions.
With Mulgrew on the way out,we need a centre back now. Also a right back.
Only solution I see till signings are done.
Is Tierney to play right back, bring back Izzy to play left back, and play Lustig and Eric as our two central defenders.
Midfield Roberts Armstrong Brown McGregor should be the starting 4 for midweek.
Dembele and Griff up front.
More discipline is needed in our play.
Players bomb forward and aren’t quick enough to get back.More discipline is required when Tierney goes forward the other 3 at the back move across one or when Lustig does it on the other side. Too many times our two full backs have went overlapping leaving huge exposure to our centre backs who have to deal with two players coming through. A huge gap has been left since Virgil and Denayer departed. Boyata could come good the lad can play but his distribution is poor.Managers should stop asking the centre backs to be passing 20 or 30 yards. The midfielders should be coming short to take it off them.
The team needs to go back to a more stringent 442 to get confidence back.
We continue to ask players not good enough to play a style that barca or Madrid play. Ludicrous.

Agree with most of that jimmy, but before/if any new signings come in (still confident they will) I would still play Fisher at R.B. not Janko he will not make it and play Lustig at C.H.
if its 4-3-3 then Broony, Armstrong and McGregor at mid.with Roberts rhs.Dembelle and Griff.cos he comes in from naturally the lhs.

Jimmy,

Good post! I am conflicted on whether we should play 442 or 433. In your formation, if Sinclair is coming than one of your four will drop out. I do not see BR using two wingers so that would be Roberts, who has not been all that impressive in pre-season.
If we are being rational it looks like Brown’s coat is on a shuggly peg, but I do not know what BR has invested in his captain.
The midfielders that we have would fit with varying between two formations and that may be the direction of BR’s thoughts.

Agh! My head hurts. I’m going to leave it alone.

To me to get the best out of Griffiths he has to be playing in advance of the other attackers through the middle playing off the shoulder like all of last Season.
Much like Hooper and Stokes the support striker if we are playing with 2 front men should be hind and off to either the right or left side depending on his stronger side.
With Stokes he was deployed off to Hoopers left with Commons behind and normally on the right side.
I think Ciftci has actually showed more in pre season than Dembele so far in this regard with his ability to hold it up and bully his way past defenders.
Fact is though Griffiths scored 40 goals last Season and almost all of them came by the 4-2-3-1 system Deila had in place.
In most if not all the other games he went 2 up Griffiths failed to score any that I remember?
This could point to an issue with Griffiths though 40 goals is not to be sniffed at regardless.

Celtic as a team should be in a far more settled position, player wise than we are now.
This is the fault of the bungling board, Deila should have been sacked at the full time whistle v Malmo, away.
Whoever we wanted to replace the Fugazi Deila, would have been given the January transfer window, players in, players out and a settled team going into these qualifiers.
But no, the Sensei was given until the end of the season.

Completely agree monti , we always do it the hard way , if its true that siclair is coming someones got to go from that front line , i can see griffiths getting phased out by rodgers , he seems to favour the target man where griff used to play and unless he really does the business on the flank i can see others like sinclair and roberts eventually playing .

Delbhoy,
I don’t think it’ll be Griffiths that is phased out and neither it should be, he is quite simply, prolific.
It may be that Forrest or GMS are out.
Incidentally, I would be disappointed to see either player leave.

If Griffiths is phased out by Rodgers it will be one of the monumental fuck-upa for a long, long time. You do not phase out a 40 goal striker. And one who is committed to the club. Especially a club like Celtic who will not spend cash. I can’t believe that Van Dijk and Denayer are still getting mentioned these guys left a year ago. And no attempt has been made to replace them. Regardless of who was going to be manager this situation should have been sorted six months ago. Personally, I don’t think Rodgers is his own man because he has never been his own man. He has worked as part of a team and a committee. That is what is happening at Celtic. He is part of a team with those well known football men P.. Lawwell and D.Desmond. For these two ‘Cmitic men’ the bottom line is the bottom line. They don’t give a shit about anything else. They are more concerned about promoting the never ending bullshit that is the Old firm than moving Celtic on. This season is crucial. Rodgers needs to qualify for the CL or it is more reputational damage. The whole club will be on a downer if CL qualification is not achieved. And it will be even harder in the future to qualify. Thye knew they were going to have to change the manager but plans were supposed to be in place before now. Also, how long do you think Rodgers will remain interested if there is nothing to play for except domestic titles?

mike

The thing is Griff. has upped his game to a new level and I feel he could do so again,he always rises to the challenge, that is one thing I admire about the wee man.40 goals in a season,it would take something special to shift him, but we play an awful lot of games over a season.

Monti

The big point here regarding the team and the priority must be signing defenders, at least two, a right back and a central defender.
Sinclair would be a good signing, but nerves will be settled with the arrival of quality defenders.

No i dont think he should be either but i dont think hes at his best on the wing . Hopefully he does the business though. John we did replace them with eric and simunovic, whoever we get in needs to have pace to play beside eric

on the subject of zero hours contracts, my daughter has started casual work in hospitality at celtic park, she is 17 and still at school so casual hours suit her but the contract she was given disappointed me as a supporter of the club…workers must wait on a text to tell them whether they have to come into work or not as well as other things in it …could do better

Good luck to your daughter Darcy,it disappoints all of us that the club founded by and for charitable causes is using this pathetic contract,it is just wrong,we are the richest club by far in Scotia,we do not need or want this type of contract.
p.s.are you as good a dancer as the other Darcy?

Eric looks pretty good but Simunovic has been injured for months. I remember being surprised when they announced he would miss the start of the season in April. Therefore, for a first team replacement not to be signed by mid July is garbage. And now we are getting the Ajer could fill in. An 18 year old who has not played in that position. Why? Because he is 6’5″. Were we not told that CL qualification was all that mattered and everything needed to be doen to achieve it. That was before the season ticket money was in. We need to be brutally honest. We are going nowhere until the bastards in boardroom are removed, including Desmond. They do not see Celtic in the same way the rest of us do. They view Celtic as a West Of Scotland club who will occasionally win a bonus by qualifying for the CL or the EL. They do not want to invest in taking Celtic forward. If they were we would have seen some action already. The players we are linked with are not recently impressive. Sinclair is a risk. He has been very average for longer than he ever played well. And he could be our biggest signing. I expected more. Maybe I am stupid but i thought that a real effort would be made to qualify this year and they haven’t. Why? because they can get away with it. They will say It is Brendan’s first season, We will build for next season’.Then it will be another excuse next season. they will not commit to spend money to qualify. And they think playing against New Rangers will keep the troops happy. For me this is unacceptable. We are sliding towards irrelevance with every passing season. The quality of [layers that will come decreases making it harder to qualify. We are reduced to signing projects and failures. Rodgers is contacting players he has worked with who have hardly set the world on fire and offering them a platform to rebuild their careers with Celtic i.e one or two seasons and you might get a game with Hull. And to be honest I think that is Brendan’s plan, I will go up there win a couple of league titles and get into the CL and then maybe Swansea will offer me the job the next time it comes up. We are being ripped off. What has Sinclair done in the past few years by the way? He played for City and Chelsea. These teams pay 6 million regularly for players that they only give a 50/50 chance of making it. We needed to sign a CB weeks ago. And should have spent decent money on one. remember interest in Robson-Kanu? He is signing for Hull. The reality is quite depressing and it stenms from the fact that the guys in charge think that Celtic is a two bob outfit in a shitty league, that only need to beat one team. And if we lose to them the boys in charge will not be too bothered as it prolongs the money spinning Old Firm that they have done so much to preserve.

John,
If I gave you £125,000 would you buy a house or would you buy a brand new Land Rover with all the bells and whistles?
I would buy the house because with a little bit of investment I can increase its worth. The value of a Land Rover drops by 25% the minute you drive it out the show room.
In the meantime I would buy beaters (cheap cars) and drive them with minimal maintenance. If I’m lucky I might get a decent Saab or an ok Rover (with an engine made by Honda) that I can drive for a number of years and sell on for a minimal loss.
The board Are investing in the club, but not these top of the line Land Rover players.
They are trying to buy up rusty XR2s and attempting to fix what is wrong with them in the hope that we can flip them for a slight profit.

The board have had this wait till we qualify and then we will spend attitude for years and its bit us on the arse, this is precisely the reason its so hard to qualify now. Its ridiculous they are struggling to get a centre half in and they are letting one walk out the door due to a piss poor contract on reduced terms getting offered , say what you want about charlie but hes a leader and this reeks of the macnamara situation when he walked out. If we cant get big players we want we should be promoting the devmt guys , nesbits been doing it for ages and spent a year on loan , henderson likewise, the boy who scored on last game of the season , what these guys give you , you cant buy , a passion for celtic and they have been used to winning. Tierney is an example of this, i would love to see the day when we have six or seven tierneys, we wouldnt lack fight anyway
