Celtic Diary Tuesday June 21: And We’re Back In The Room

Well, technically, we were never out of the room, but for some reason the site wasn’t working properly yesterday, the screen showing that your acount had been suspended , which some readers took to mean that their account had been suspended, when in reality it was ours.

Still, a quick rustle round to get a shiny ten bob for the meter, and we’re away again.

We never went anywhere, we awere always here, and just because none of us said anything, there was no reason to suspect that we were unhappy with , say, the bonuses being handed out, our new contracts or the lack of funds available to buy, r, new laptops.

In fact, here’s a photo of us all looking as happy as can be, so there’s no reason whatsoever to think all is not well.

Ach , there’s me getting my stories all mixed up again.

Joyous Ibrox fans, you see, are all happy again because  despite still not having spoken publicly, their magic hatted boss has been pictured-supposedly- taking training and and not hitching a lift south with his number two, Davie Weir.

Whatever blows their frock up , I suppose.

Back to the good guys, though, because thats what its all about really, and Celtic now know that they won’t have to go to Iceland this year for the first European game, which is the Second Round qualifier, but either to Estonia or Gibraltar instead.

Yeah. Gibraltar. Who knocked out the champions of the Isle of Man in the pre-qualifiers.

Surely it would be a better idea for all these wee countries to play amongst themselves in the summer and whittle it down to just the one side and therefore cut down on the fixtures ?

Oh, wait, thats a really bad idea. at least until the Scottish co-efficient gets into double figures.

As it stands, Celtic will have played forty two games before christmas, should group stage football and a place in the League cup final be achieved.

And at , say fifty quid a game, a conservative estimate including costs, thats , er, £2100 per fan if he wants to see all of them.

Without beer.

What do we know about Lincoln Imps, the side from Gibraltar who we may face ?

Well, they’re from Gibraltar, and called Lincoln Red Imps.

So, not just your usual Imps then.

As usual at this stage of the competition, Celtics possible opponents play in a picturesque setting…

And we’d better hope that Estonian side Flora Tallin put them out, because for a semi professional side , they seem pretty fearsome.

Look at what they did to one of Europes biggest clubs… just weeks ago…

A glance at their squad shows a number of similar surnames, indicating a few of the players may be related, but we have been assured that its Lincoln , Gibraltar, and not the town in the east of England, an area where a Norwich Union is not just an insurance company.

Flora Tallin, ( I’m sure I know her ) are the other possible, and being honest, more likely opponents.

FC Flora Tallinn, commonly known as Flora Tallinn, or simply as Flora, is a professional football club, based in TallinnEstonia.

Founded in 1990, Flora was one of the founding members of the Meistriliiga, and is one of two clubs which have never been relegated from the Estonian top division, along with Narva Trans. Domestically, Flora has won 10 Meistriliiga, 7 Estonian Cup and 9Estonian Supercup trophies. In international club football, Flora has won 1 Livonia Cup trophy.[4]

Flora is often regarded to be the flagship of Estonian football due to the club policy of promoting young Estonian players through the ranks and several managers having coached both Flora and the Estonia national football team at the same time in the past.

Their colours seem alright,

as does the ground;

And as for Tallin ?

Well, its got a Museum of Torture,

which makes it an ideal candidate for a possible twinning with Glasgow, which also has its own house of horrors..

Now, some of you may be considering a trip over there to watch the game should Celtic face Flora.

Do not, under any circumstances, browse the city on your computer whilst your wife is looking over your shoulder. In fact, its best if she is not in the room with you.

You see, Tallinn has another industry, which is booming.

Its geographical postion in Europe may make you think that its a Russian or Slavic type of place, perhaps a little dour, maybe even a little , and I’m trying to be as respectful as I can here, and as honest.

Estonian people are closer  to Finalnd in nature than any other, although there is a huge Russian influence.

To give you an idea, here’s Maro Kouri ( photographer and journalist) presenting his image of the “New Face of Tallin .. (Yes, I know this isn’t a face )

For those of you who went to Amsterdam, you’ll understand me when I say there are a few similarities, except the Estonians are nice people . And taller and blonder.

For those of you who didn’t go to Amsterdam, if you go to Tallinn, you won’t need to ever go to the Dutch capital.

So, come on Flora !

(Er, the team , that is. )

Elsewhere, STV have been in contact with UEFA, and actually got them to say something, which is quite good for any Scottish media outlet.

In his report, Grant Russell, pictured below, said;

UEFA will not investigate allegations that Rangers were incorrectly awarded a licence to play in European competition in the 2011/12 season.

A statement to STV draws a line under the matter from the governing body’s point of view, saying Rangers’ three-year exclusion from playing in Europe after going into liquidation was the major factor in a case not being pursued.

New club, then ?

A group of Celtic shareholders have actively campaigned for a review of the decision for several years and recently contacted the governing body for clarification as part of an ongoing campaign referred to as Resolution 12.

Their questions centred on whether the Ibrox side fully disclosed the details of an unpaid £2.8m tax bill to HM Revenue and Customs, commonly known as the “wee tax case”, ahead of their participation in the Champions League five years ago.

Sort of, Grant, you can bring the SFA into this whenever you’re ready…

UEFA rules demand participants in the Champions and Europa Leagues declare to them any “overdue payables” to the taxman, with details on whether there is a commitment to repay amounts, or a dispute over any bill.

Failure to disclose accurate information during what is referred to as the “monitoring period”, which is spread over two dates in June and September, can result in sanctions.

When you’re ready….

A UEFA spokesperson told STV: “As a consequence of decisions taken against Rangers FC in 2012 as well as the administration of the club and the events and measures that followed (including the club being ineligible to apply for a licence to participate in UEFA competitions for three seasons), there is no need for UEFA to investigate this matter any further since the club was not granted a licence to participate in the 2012/13 UEFA club competitions, the club entered the fourth tier of Scottish football and it was not able to play in UEFA competitions for the next three years in any event.”

STV asked the governing body for further clarification on whether an investigation took place, and on whether they were satisfied the correct procedure was followed. UEFA replied that they had no further comment to make.

The Scottish FA    “have stated that Rangers did not have any overdue payables at the March 31 deadline set down for clubs to make successful applications for an endorsement for a UEFA club licence.

If Rangers did have an overdue payable by the June deadline set by UEFA, they would have had until September 30 to prove the matter had been resolved. Consequently, there is no question of Rangers having been excluded from European competition in 2011/12. Instead, any sanction would have applied to future seasons.

Go on say it, “but they died so who gives a fuck ? “

As a precedent, clubs who fail to declare or repay overdue amounts to the tax authorities have typically been banned from UEFA from playing in Europe for one season in any of the following three years after a sanction is imposed.

Okay, thats all well and good.

UEFA have answered one set of questions.

There was no point in bothering to investigate Rangers, because they died.

But at no point did UEFA say they were going to investigate, or not going to investigate the SFA, which is what this whole issue is about, so Grant Russell, the hack behind the story, has not asked the correct questions, and therefore not been given the correct answers.

Journalism is not about finding  the right answers, its about finding the right questions.

Anyway, we hear there’s more to come, and the battle is certainly not over yet.

You see, as with all wars they don’t actually start, there’s one place thats quite eager to join in any battle, especially if they think there’s a chance of winning it.

first things first though, and that statement we’ve all been waiting for….we hear its in the post….

Celtic have started training again, and we are told they are all on double shifts as the new boss wants the club to hit the ground running.

As far as we can see, he’s happy enough with what he’s got for now, and thinks he can do something with them.

A vague enough statement, perhaps even worthy of the SMSM, but thats what we’ve been told.

So, onwards and upwards, the season is about to begin.

It should be fun…. and guess what-there’s chips in the canteen again…

Which is my entry to the caption competition…

Whats yours ?

What was really ‘surprising’ was that the Resolutioners had received correspondence from UEFA and they never mentioned or forwarded it to the people they are ‘meant’ to be representing, Celtic shareholders. Never been in or liked ‘cliques’. HH

I am not clued up on the ins and outs of Res 12.but i know that there is a political game being played between them and our enemies. They have to keep there cards close to there chests and not alert them to whats afoot.
So for me,its a question of trust and my trust is in and with them (The Requisitioners).
This issue has still some miles to go and for me time is not a problem, its a satisfactory outcome that is important.H.H.

Big peter is delighted. Money in the bank 50,000 paid up dront. No need to spend much. Brendan will be told to say Ryan Christie and Scott Allan are like new signings. No need to comment on the Resolution 12 stuff the dafties have parted with their cash. Glad it is not me! No more of my cash is going to these chancers. I presume that someone at Celtic Park has noticed the first foru fixtures, which seem to be designed to give the Newco a good head start. They play clubs expected to come in the bottom half while Celtic Aberdeen and Hearts play each other, as well as play in Europe. if these games are not negotiated effectively it will make Rodgers job all the more difficult. remember he is on a 12 month rolling contract. Out of Europe before the first Old Firm game would be difficult to take, especially if they are top of the league and Celtic don’t beat them. He will be under extreme pressure. The press will be having a field day and the supporters will not be patient. All patience has been used up in the past two years. The situation will be made worse if a few under-whelming bargain basement buys are all that’s made. I know Celtic do their business quietly but it may be a good idae to make 3 decent signings with the 15 million, or is it 16 million with the extra l million from Wanyama, rather than 4 or 5 for 10 million. A decent striker is a minimum requirement. Please do not give us the ‘In Brendan we trust’ nonsense, the reprobates at celtic Park are every bit as adept at ripping off the supporters as King and Co at Ibrox.

John, no one could accuse me of being a Lawwell supporter,Brendan was a D.D. appointment, what is wrong with having a bit of faith in him?You missed out Ajer he also will be a new signing. There will be a huge difference between Rodgers and Deilia in the way that the team performs, chalk to Deilias cheese. As for new signing investment and Res 12 lets just wait and see what happens, its early days.
I have certainly not altered my opinion on this Board, but as for the fixture list,we have to face them all at some time and i agree with you that the signings must be the correct ones, that will be down to Rodgers not Lawwell, so for me it will continue in Brendan we trust, not in lawwell we trust.H.H.

First day at training and already some are panicing, you couldn’t make it up. We have an excellent manager and the players to get to the final group game. I want Rodgers to assess the squad( five times champions) and see what quality he needs for the Group stages of whatever comp we are in. He will still have time to bring in quality and clear out those he feels won’t do. Let us stay together and enjoy the feel good factor

John a lot of what you say is true m8 But We shouldn’t fear anyone,so what if we are up against the top sides at the start of the season, bring them on I say,we are the best team in the league by a mile. Ronnie fucked it big time, and I think that has taken its toll on the fans.
But do not be afraid, for this squad, with the addition of 2 or 3 proven players, will walk the league.
Champions league,we may not be ready yet, but there could be dramatic improvement in certain players, who took the huff.
Brown could come back,Johansen, Bitton Rogic all poor and badly effected by the manager.
I say the squad was there to beat Malmo, the manager wasn’t.
Onto Res 12, and I think slowly but surely, the truth will come out.
The statement yesterday gave more questions than answers, and according to the Res 12 guys,a more detailed response has been sent to them than what was reported by stv.
It has to be rock solid by the Res 12 guys, they have to nail this properly.Any mistake, any statement, has to be validated by lawyers etc. So keep the faith, and look forward, to a more passionate Celtic team, with a manager who will deliver.

I do hope it’s Estonia we go too. Even the name Gibralter fills me with sadness God bless our 3 martyers who were slain in cold blood by the sas.

A woman’s place is not at home,
The fight for freedom it still goes on,
I took up my gun until freedoms day,
I pledged to fight for the I.R.A.

In Armagh jail I served my time,
Strip searches were a British crime,
Degraded me but they could not see,
I’d suffer this to see Ireland free.

Gibraltar was the place I died,
McCann and Savage were by my side,
I heard the order so loud and shrill,
Of Thatchers voice, said shoot to kill.

So do not stand at my grave,
I am not there I do not sleep,
Do not stand and my grave and cry,
When Ireland lives I do not die.

So even Mr. Warbles the magician is back. I wonder when we’ll hear him congratulate Hibernian for their Scottish cup victory. Then again, they have done so, by having 3-2 on their shirts. A silent complement that speaks louder than words?. Clever stuff.
I sincerely hope he is their manager this season. He’ s become the heir to Walter’s myth. A legend in the sevco heads, and some of our pant- wetters.

Guys you are right, it’s going to be a good one.
Not nice but important to remember what Gibralter means to some of us. Accept not all have identical views but we share the Celtic and next season is shaping up to be a cracker. Second Rangers have made experienced signings to back up young players, how will they fare at ICT or Ross C away in February.of course no European nights so Brendan will see a biggish squad but no permanent bench warmers.

Just been pulling up that plastic sheeting that you put down to stop weeds. It is in the 20s and i am not so I need to vent. It might get a bit philosophical so turn away now if you hate that kind of stuff.
The R12 issue has moved on a wee bit via STV. Is it just me or am I missing something. What has been achieved so far?
I fear there is a danger here of ending up being proved right, i.e. The Res 12 guys are shown to be correct re the licence issue but effectively nothing happens as a consequence.
So Uefa think they are a different club but what if “rangers” keep advertising themselves as the same club? Do we challenge that? If they claim they have won x titles, do we challenge that?
Hats off to the R12 guys who have sweated blood on this but is being correct enough; is being shown to be correct enough? If nothing changes then where is the victory? Truth is sometimes not enough.

I like that and I like the fact that the supporters have along with everyone else not got a clue about who he will sign until they actually sign.So gawn yersel Brendan, thems can sign any auld pensioner or deadbeat going, there will be no resale value there, scraping and scratching, diggin in the dirt where they belong.

Motivation to score at qualifiers quadruples after Etims picture of Tallin talent

No one is saying that Celtic cannot beat the top teams in the league. However, all of these coming in the first few weeks at the same time as Europe can result in a completely different feel to the season if results don’t go our way,
The supporters are not very patient. Rodgers will be under huge pressure if he does not qualify for the CL group stages. That is why he is there. A few dropped points in the league and he is under scrutiny. This changes the way the team approach games and certain players may go into hiding. The way Ronnie was treated by the support was a disgrace. I believe that Brendan will be given better treatment by the fans but there will be a limit, which will be quickly reached. Especially, if he is left with the same players who were judged to have been not good enough just a few months ago.
A centre forward and a centre back of soem quality are needed straight away. No one is panicking but these are realities. Celtic has changed. No one goes along with that ‘win, lose or draw’ mentality any more. People have short memories and will stop going if things don’t go well. Not to plan for these eventualities is just plain stupid. and if you believe that Lawwell et al will release any money for players that ae not absolutely necessary then I would ask where have you been for the past few years.
Yes, Brendan will get more out of them but a lot of them are simply not good enough for the CL. he will not turn Nadir Ciftci into a Suarez for example. the last thing he needs is getting knocked out of the CL and then making a panic signing. Hopefully that won’t happen. The two Liverpool players are being talked of as possibilities if Celtic qualify for the CL. We have heard this before . players need to be brought in to help us reach the Cl group stages, not after. .

mike

John, Everybody and there granny could tell that the previous management team were not up to the job,Rodgers is a completely different, experienced coach.Watch unfit players becoming better, watch as tactics are altered to suit or be changed in game time, watch as players perform better under Rodgers.
Watch as funds are spent on better quality players, but that may take him some time to evaluate and adjust the present squad. There is no guarantees in fitba,a bit of luck is also needed to hope that the draws are kind and if we do not succeed into the C.L. this year, then we will the following year.
I completely understand how angry you are at the Board but D.D. has brought in an experienced Manager and some funds are promised,so please be a wee bit more patient and lend your support to the club. You were a great supporter with your family, please do not give up,your heart is telling you to add your support, otherwise you wouldnt continue posting,so please be more patient,so that we can all enjoy you and your familys support in the future.
Just for yoo, Fuck the Board.H.H.

Personally, I will be patient. However, I won’t be sitting in the stand this season. Those sitting in the stands might be a whole lot less patient than me and that is the problem. I will always support Celtic and whoever plays for and manages them but I will not hand over any more of my money to the board because of the shameful way they have failed to support Celtic supporters and shareholders in the past 5 years. Our board has done more to help Newco than the people in charge at Ibrox. They have deliberately kept quiet concerning Res 12 and every other issue and are complicit in the continuation myth. They are an Old firm board not a Celtic board. Do you think that Celtic would exist if we had done what they have? They would have destroyed us. there would eb no Newco Celtic. they have got their wish though. 50,000 seats old. No need to do anything else. the punters have paid. They must be happy. why do we need to make waves if the money is in the bank. They will be happy with the games against whatever Rangers are put out. You don’t get change by just handing over your money regardless of the attitudes and behaviour of those in charge. I will be delighted if I am wrong but I base my scepticism of the motives of the guys in charge by looking at their previous decisions an who they are. How can any Celtic supporter have confidence in a Chairman who called the supporters racists? What about Lord Livingston and Desmond’s repeated utterances supporting the ‘survival myth’. these people are not to be trusted. But they understand money and they have just taken in lots of it. What compels them to do any more? They are paying the manager a great salary and he will be expected to perform miracles. If he does not teh supporters will turn against him quickly and the press will harp on about his last few months at Liverpool, heaping pressure on him. It could turn very ugly, very quickly. But no one wants to listen to any one saying ‘calm down and don’t get carried away’. But they will b the very supporters booing the team off the park and starting bloody internet petitions.

John, Lawwell, Bankier and the rest are the Board, they are not and never will be Celtic,we are Celtic, you me and all the people with the tic in our DNA,heart, soul and blood. My Sevilla top is in a drawer waiting for these auld bones to be buried in it.(bet its no pretty).
So please have some faith in a Manager, who says.(Liverpool were great but Celtic are blood they are family). He is us,he gets Celtic,he loves Celtic, just like you and me et.all.
Please lets all give him (not Lawwell,Bankier etc.)our complete backing and see where it gets us,even if he fails his appointment was well intentioned, but he wont fail,of that i am certain.H.H.

As I have said I will back him but will the board! Maybe they think the outlay on the manager is enough. we will wait and see.

John we still have to shop in bargain basement terms compared to England.
We cannot change that. The tv revenue money is such that we can’t even compete with championship teams.
But it’s about how a manager can get the most out of his group of players.
I have no doubt, that the group of players there will be an extra yard quicker,an extra spring when jumping,an extra pound harder in the tackle.
Just because we have a manager who understands the need and expectations of the Celtic support. This guy will bring back titles and cups Ronnie could only dream about.
Hail Hail have faith, the last two years will soon be a distant memory my friend.

Reading about Rodgers at the kelpies, luv them, one or two quality additions to the TEAM,will make the difference, but he WILL get the best out of the existing players.H.H.

Res 12 dying on the vine. Nothing from Celtic (PL where are you?) and even CQN giving up with nonsense statements like “I know the lack of public information is frustrating (as is the associated flack, b.t.w.), but my best recommendation is that we let them get on with it.” Season tickets sold. Time to move on?? Depressing

Bondi I think Aaron mooy is good enough

Many of the existing players are simply not good enough, that is the problem. Brendan will get more out of them but they are not going to be made good enough for the level we want to be at. Or are many of you saying that the appointment of Brendan has immediately made these players better footballers. This is hopeful to say the least. If they were woefully inadequate last year then they may improve but they will not suddenly be the guys to get us to the CL group stages. Maybe I sound pessimistic but the blind faith optimism is much more dangerous. We appear to be going into the qualifiers with the manager experimenting with the team. we have no choice but temper your hopes, chances are they will be dashed. It’s almost as if a lot of people are about to watch their first season of football. Surely you have all seen this before. Although eventually fantastic I remember the devastation of the failure of Martin o’Neill’s team to make the CL in his second season, and look at the team he had. Simply, I feel many people are getting far too ahead of themselves and are expecting too much. This results in frustration and anger. Which does not help the manager of the team.

John, I am clearly saying that some of the players will improve under our new experienced coach,he is on record as saying that he will trim the squad to 23,not the remaining 30.
He is saying and i believe him that he will add 2/3 talented TEAM players with no wage cap and no P.L. interference or influence, now maybe i am being optimistic but i trust Rodgers and will back him 100%.
Keep the faith,be patient and back him and the team.H.H.
