Celtic Diary Sunday June 5: SMSM and Building a Myth

The Sunday Post, the paper we all used to get, has employed Alan Brazil as a columnist, alongside other notables such as Gordon smith, which probably explains why it’s the paper we used to get.

Brazil, who doesn’t watch Scottish football but is never short of an opinion on it, reckons there’s a massive tug of war going on between Celtic and “rangers ” over Liverpools youngsters, and then they’re going to plunder the rest of English clubs for their talent.

WHEN Celtic and Rangers do battle on the pitch, everybody stops to watch.

Far fewer take notice when a tussle takes place behind the scenes.

But the scrap that is happening right now proves the return of the Old Firm is breathing new life into Scottish football.

In one corner, it’s Celtic and Brendan Rodgers.

In the other, Rangers and Frank McParland.

And the prize? Plundering Liverpool – then the rest of the Premier League – for the best of their young talent.

The Gers won first blood when they plucked teenage midfielder Jordan Rossiter from the Reds’ academy on a permanent deal.

But before Rangers’ head of recruitment – and former Liverpool academy director – McParland could even begin to enjoy the moment, along came Rodgers and the plot thickened.

The new Bhoys boss wasted no time in whipping out his own Anfield contacts book with a view to nabbing £3.5 million-rated Joe Gomez on loan

As far as one-upmanship goes, that’s a beezer – and Hoops fans will be loving it.

Actually, I think we’ll stop there.

Recent indications from Celtic are that Dermot is putting the band back together, and getting players in on loan is not the way forward.

And Celtic fans will not be “loving it ” if the best we can hope for is a few loans and a couple of kids.

What Brazil has failed to grasp is that the Old firm no longer exists. what we have now is a single superpower in Scotland and a club with a sizeable support trying desperately to appear relevant, when simply they don’t have the revenue or the backing to compete.

So, of course, he has to bring Celtic down to their level, as opposed to the other way round.

He’s not   the only one doing that.

Apparently Celtic and “rangers ” are in competition for Danny Graham of Sunderland and Steven Taylor of Newcastle, two players who would be way above Ibrox expectations, and way below ours.

But it keeps them relevant.

Another that really shouldn’t have any opinion on Celtic is former defender Mark Wilson, who gave his views to the Capital City Press…

MARK Wilson insists Kris Commons could have saved Ronny Deila’s Celtic career – and believes the attacker is a ‘luxury’ Brendan Rodgers can afford to keep.

Wilson is convinced Commons should have featured more last season as Celtic struggled to hold off Aberdeen in the league.

The 32-year-old, who had a public falling out with manager Deila during the Europa League defeat to Molde in October, made just five league starts after the New Year.

Struggled to hold off Aberdeen ? Yeah, thats how it was.

“For me, personally, I think he has plenty to offer to Celtic. I’m a big fan of Kris Commons as a player.

“I thought he should have played a lot last season and he didn’t.

“Ronny Deila opted for anybody else rather than Kris Commons, which was weird when he was such a goal-scorer and such a big player for Celtic over the years.

“I would like to see him stay, because I still think he can contribute. And for a large portion of the Celtic fans, they would like to see him stay.

“He should have made more appearances last season and maybe if he did Celtic would have been in a better place, and maybe Ronny Deila would have still been there.”

He is a luxury player, but with what he brings to the team the other nine outfield players can chip in and make up for the bad bits of his game.

“Brendan Rodgers does change the system and that’s why I think he’s the perfect fit for Celtic.

“And he might just be wise to keep Commons, because there’s no doubt he’s valuable for certain games.”

Luxury player , of course, is a euphemism for lazy bastard. But we all need someone who the other players can carry when he’s not doing his job…. don’t we ?

One name linked that might have a little bit of truth in it is, oh I’m not even going to try to spell it, here’s all nigeria soccer instead;

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have made enquiries about signing Chidiebere Nwakali from Manchester City, according to the midfielder’s camp.

The Nigeria youth international has impressed since joining Norwegian Tippeligaen side IK Start in March, starting the last ten games in the topflight and scoring one goal against Aalesunds FK.

With his loan deal with IK Start set to run out in the coming weeks, Nwakali recently traveled to Manchester to discuss his future with the club and it is not ruled out that he would take part in pre-season training.

“Celtic wanted to sign Chidiebere last week, they approached Manchester City but the club gave them a negative response,” Chidiebere’s elder brother Allwell Nwakali told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“He was in Manchester to see the officials after he was given a two-week break by IK Start to find out if he will take part in pre-season. We are working hard for him to start playing for Man City. ”

Chidiebere is currently in Lagos and will travel to Owerri on Sunday to attend the birthday of his younger brother Kelechi Nwakali, who is in Calabar with the national team.

The ex-Flying Eagles star is now managed by very influential agent Pere Guardiola.

We’ve already got one player in from Start, so it’s not unreasonable to assume we may have spotted another, and we have been known to do business with Manchester city in the past.

But to take two players from a side which hasn’t won in 28 league games is a bit like, well, signing the Dundee United front three and expecting a run in the champions League.

Which reminds me, Etims have , due to legal pressure , been forced to reveal our pish stained source, the man in the know who keeps us informed of transfer goings on…

Rumour: Galatasaray’s Jason Denayer interesting Manchester City?

Gordon Strachans Scotland completed the last of their friendlies last night, losing to France, something which a number of other countries will do this summer.

Scotland were in a tough group in the euros, and didn’t qualify. And the press, having had a free summer trip cruelly snathced away from them, don’t seem to have forgiven him.

Scotland, it appears,  are shite again, and despite this coming on the back of two games at the end of a long season where the players really would rather be somewhere else, and the manager as well, come to think of it, those SFA jollies have to be fulfilled.

And it was an excuse for them to get out of the country away from the heat generated by Resolution 12, as the beaks now know that this summer sojourn could also be their last.

With Celtic beginning to clear the throat and giving the wording a final check….that is.

Ach, its summer.

Lets try to enjoy it.

There’s the Euros to look forward to…

Germany v Hungary has officially got my favourite match hashtag but I can’t wait for New Zealand to play Costa Rica

Alright, those games won’t take place, but it would be funny if they did.

Oh, you’ll need this when you go away…

If only there was a domestic version, adapted slightly. Oh, there is. It’s called soap.

Our chums from the other side had something else to worry about last night…

Apparently the shredder is broke, and they have to burn documents now.

Or they could have just been giving the old trophy room a dust down ready for title number 55…

Of course , the support over there somehow feel that this is a realistic possibility, but then, they have form for that sort of , er, optimism and unwillingness to face reality;

Mind you, there’s at least one of our own who raised a few eyebrows as he struggled to understand fashion, you know, that “does this go with this ” question so many of us struggle with….

 Elsewhere, Gary Monk, once considered by some for the managers job at Celtic until someone pointed out the existence of rhyming slang,  has been appointed manager of Leeds;

Its funny how people can end up in jobs that were kind of destined for them.

I mean , look at Davie Provan, once of Kilmarnock and Celtic…

He became a tv commentator..

On to yesterdays caption competition…

I sincerely hope that Brendan is succesfull in his persuit of Andre Wisdom, the team needs big strong black athletes at the back to supplement the forwards. We looked weak at the rear,it defo needs strenthening.A good defensive mid.and a couple of forwards would be fantastic, with the emphesis on the tic bit.

Nothing to do with black athletes, Wisdom is not an upgrade on Janko or Lustig. In fact, he was not a very good player at all. I hope this transfer talk is nonsense this would be a waste of resources to bring this player in.

No more loans, I don’t want to see us develop players for others at the expense of our own youngsters.

Not too bothered about signings as I think the squad is good enough, though a centre half and a striker wouldn’t be bad. Would like to see Aitchison get some game time and i’m not sure if Stokes should get another chance.

Can’t wait for the season to start, not felt like this since I was a wean waiting for Christmas.

Where is this slagging off of commons came from; especially in the diary where you keep making jokes about a fantastic servant like commons being rubbish. What wilson said is correct he could have saved delia because he is the best player in the league. People werent saying he was a lazy bastard when he scored 30 goals , he was the same player then he is now, this has all came from the pish delia spouted how every player must spend all there time tracking back , total shite. The best players have always not had the best work rate , thats why you have players who can do that type of thing and let others with more skill win the games.

Talking about Huns.
Remember the time time Ali and superman teamed up to face the Hun.
The Superman vs. Muhammad Ali match is broadcast on intergalactic television to thousands of other worlds (with Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen acting as broadcaster). With the match underway, it soon becomes apparent that in battling with more or less equal strength, Ali is the superior fighter. Superman takes a serious pummeling, but somehow refuses to fall down; he stays on his feet all through the beating. Finally, Ali stops the fight, urging the referee to call for a technical knockout. Superman then falls face-first on the canvas (making the knockout more than technical).

Now crowned Earth’s champion, Ali is set to face the Scrubb’s champion, the behemoth Hun’Ya. The alien leader then asks Ali to predict at what round the fight will end. (Ali was known for predicting the round in which he would knock out his opponent.) After some chiding, Ali predicts that he’ll knock the alien out in the fourth round (“He’ll hit the floor in four!”). Once the match begins, however, Ali quickly starts to suffer from fighting the super-powered Hun’Ya.

Meanwhile, Superman’s great recuperative powers have enabled him to make a speedy recovery. Disguising himself as Ali cornerman Bundini Brown, he steals into the Scrubb command ship and sabotages their space armada. In his showdown with the armada, however, Superman is again badly hurt, and is left drifting in space.

Miraculously, Ali gets a second wind. In the predicted fourth round, he not only knocks the alien champion out, but out of the ring as well. Yet after witnessing Superman’s decimation of his forces, the Scrubb leader cries foul and decides to invade the now helpless Earth anyway. Just as Rat’Lar is about to give the go-ahead to his backup forces, his own champion Hun’Ya becomes enraged at Rat’Lar’s dishonorable tactics and deposes him. There will be no invasion. Earth is saved.

Superman is rescued and once again revived. Hun-ya, the new Scrubb leader, makes peace with Ali, Superman, and all of Earth. The very end of the book shows Ali and Superman in a private moment. Ali reveals that he figured out Superman’s secret identity as Clark Kent, but implicitly vows to keep it secret. The book ends with the two champions embracing and Ali proclaiming, “Superman, WE are the greatest!”

Delbhoy. Right on. Commons has a role but not in Ronny’s system. I thought our bhoys were fit but too tired (Sevco) You can’t run all the time. Commons was gifted and could turn a game and should have been ‘excused’ from running around madly (like Broonie and Johansen)At one stage, before Giffiths took fire, Commons was the only goal scorer we had. Rodgers should find a place for him.

Ronnie broke up the holy trinity of Stokes Griffiths and Commons, add to that the demise in form of Johansen who was superb when all 3 mentioned were in front of him.
Ronnie fucked up a decent enough team, and made us a laughing stock.Mulgrew went to left back in Malmo, when Izzy had run them ragged in the first leg,he left Izzy out.
The guy utterly clueless, and I will say it again, any manager bar him, would have qualified against Malmo with the group of players he had at his disposal.

You’re spot on, Jimmybee. When Kris Commons started playing regularly we improved dramatically for the 2nd part of 2014-15 season. He also gave Ciftci loads of shouts ahead of Leigh Griffiths, a fucking cart-horse instead of a thoroughbred. If I had a better memory I could go on and on. Just watched highlights of the La Liga Promises tournament final between Villareal and A. madrid. These are U12 players and their skills and sense of team are sublime. It shows the gap that exists between our young players and those at a club such as Villareal who won the tournament. What the SFA should be doing is devising and implementing a strategy to bridge that gap instead of circling the wagons and their bias towards one club.

Rebus, I was involved with youth coaching and schools football for many years. The sad truth is that the demise especially of school football,is hurting this country badly.
School football was huge in the 60s 70s and 80s,but since the late 90s is not part of the curriculum. Meaning not every school is represented.
Growing up we used to have to go through at least 4 trials before finally getting picked. Now in my area I don’t hear of any schools football being played.
The government should be reintroducing football to the curriculum,it is by no coincidence,we haven’t reached the finals of major tournaments since its demise.
Only my opinion of course.

Jimmybee,

I did not know that school football has been stopped in some/most ? Schools. I benefited from school football playing for Knightswood Secondary. All through my football life the standard of coaching that I received was poor. The focus was always on physical fitness not skills or formations.

The philosophy was that we would run other teams off the park…..SAD.

Reply to  john young

Agreed John,
Sadly kids aren’t been given all they can to achieve such goals.
School football was a huge benefit to the kids who normally couldn’t afford to play for their local team. The local boys club now charge something like £ 25 per month per player,as parks that used to be free to kids on Saturday mornings are now charged. We were able to let the kids play free, for those on the dole,or charge 50p to those who could afford it.
We also had a boot bank, where kids who were better off and getting new boots every other month, would put their old ones in the bank for other kids to use.
So schools football at least gave the kids who had good football skills a chance to play and be coached, even if it was only once a week. Some of the kids are now not getting the chance to play football,as their parents just can’t afford to send them to the local teams.
But I agree with all your comments.

With the feel good factor back and the fans backing the manager, all we need now is a statement from the board,on res12. All they have to do is give credit to the people who have driven this, wether they win or lose doesn’t matter.
Just give them credit and say that Celtic football club is proud of what they have achieved so far in their pursuit of truth and sporting integrity, and will stand proudly shoulder to shoulder with all our fans, against the Masonic orange scum that run the football in this country. HH

jimmybee,
I am also a current coach with one of the biggest and most successful boys clubs in Scotland, I don’t think that its school football to blame, for me its the pro youth system, which clearly dose not work, I have been fortunate that I have coached many boys who have made pro youth level, as my name suggests I don’t live to far from either lennoxtown or murray park, in my younger days I would get excited if one of my players went to celtic or indeed rangers, I would go to LT or MP to watch on a Saturday afternoon if not attending at paradise, inevitably the players would not be playing as the squad size was to big, at pro youth level you only play friendly’s there is no league, non competitive, fucking stupid, until they reach 17s , let them play for there boys clubs with training from the pro teams, give them game time that’s the only way to progress Scottish football, my opinion sir, nothing more

I was chuffed for them and their parents, but having them from 6 years of age,and coaching them into players, then receiving nothing not a set of strips or a donation from the big boys to help others coming up.Thats the biggest bug bearer for me.
Professional clubs need to do more.
I remember the Arsenal scout coming over to watch one of my players,he asked where his parents were,I pointed them out,and he said he’s not for us.He won’t be above 5ft 8 and that is one of our remits.Good job he wasn’t scouting Messi or Jinky Eh.
