So This Is Paradise

Brian 53 offers a little perspective on the Ronny Deila reign, and compares it to seasons gone by…
Since Jock Stein became manager way back in 1965 we have done rather well as a club, particularly as prior to then we hadn’t won the league since the year I was born, 1953. I remember fondly those early years as a young supporter when win, lose or draw was much more important than it is today because until Jock came we didn’t win much of anything.

On Monday I awoke with a slight hangover after celebrating our fifth league win in a row, a feat as you well know that has only been achieved three times in our history. The first time was several years prior to the Great War and way beyond living memory. The second was under the great man himself as part of the nine in a row, a feat that we want to emulate and surpass in the future.
I was a big fan of the man who helped take us to this five but although he talked a good game, could not produce it on the field and seemed at times to be a rabbit caught in the headlights when things went wrong in the big games. We should remember him fondly though, he has done reasonably well considering the players at his disposal. One wonders what he could have achieved with better players or even players that had bought into his system. I hope that the dissenters are moved out with him.
A lot has been made of the poor play this season but I can remember many a season with poor play, some of them fairly recent. Some of our best seasons of outstanding football have won nothing. Remember our Tommy’s team?

Bhoy that was the best football since the Lions and we only won one Scottish Cup in the three seasons that Tommy was in charge. The Seville year, nothing but saying that, what a journey, loved every minute (well most of them)
Ronny has taken a lot of stick for losing out on two cups and only winning the league, we were all disappointed with the team performance in those cups but you can’t win them all, nor should you. A double should be a great achievement and the treble should be like it is now, something you win every thirty odds years or so.
Since Jock we have had a total of twenty four seasons without any cup wins, fourteen totally barren and ten were we have only won the league. For me it’s all about winning the league, the cups? Well the Scottish Cup now and again but the league cup? That should be for our reserves/development squad to help bring them on. Other teams like us need their bit of glory so I never begrudge getting beat in the cup by anyone, that’s what the cup and its atmosphere is all about.
A rough breakdown of managers and cup wins.

Big Jock after winning two trebles and five doubles could only win the league in his eighth year, missing out on both cups, as he would twice more in his final years with us.

Billy had two, five year spells as manager and in his first stint won the league on three occasions, his two cup wins coming in the years when we were runners up. In his second stint he started off with a double, winning the Scottish Cup again in his second year but failed to win anything in his last three years as manager.

Davie who managed for four seasons in between only managed one Scottish Cup and one league win in different years. Tommy I have already mentioned. Martin had two lean years after his initial treble, only winning the league the second year. Gordon had only one cup less year which was his three in a row season. Neil could only manage the Scottish Cup in his first season, winning it again in his third as re retained the league title and set us off on our way to five.
So well done Ronny for being part of the five, you never know you might be part of the ten.

Whatever the future holds you have been to Paradise and will always be welcome back.

And for us supporters….. a wee bit of inspiration from the author

To Be or Not to Be
*
To be a a man among the men
To shut yer face when yae dinnae ken
To look at facts, that’s there in front
To no make stuff up, ya stupid grunt
*
*
To be a fan among the crowd
To chant yer team an sing it loud
To sort yer face oot, withoot a frown
To support yer team, no be a clown

To be a man with big balls
To still be there, incase it falls
To know yer history, withoot fail
Because only then, can you say, Hail Hail.

No rangers no hearts no hibs, tony Mowbray john Barnes Lou macari Liam Brady would all have have won the league ffs,in the present time.
Stop comparing this clown to what went on with other managers, there is nothing to compare.
He is a dud.

The managers you mention all had their time and their chance and like Ronny were not up to the task. You can’t compare managers from different era’s as you can’t realistically compare teams, it just doesn’t work. They either did well or they didn’t against the opposition at the time and we both concur that Ronnie did not.

Players play a big part in our success and failure as a club. When the great Lisbon Lion era was over, Big Jock struggled in his last 4 years, coming 3rd, 2nd, 1st then in his last year 5th. Without the players even the best manager will struggle. I think the players are as much to blame as the manager in the big games this season. Think back to those games and the poor passing and dreadful football is what was pish.

Ronnie was never meant to be manager but was initially meant to be brought in as a coach, trouble was nobody wanted the job so we were stuck with him. The guy did his best but it wasn’t good enough. Saying that history (and we all know how much history matters) will record that he won 2 consecutive league titles and 1 league cup, so I thank him for that.

Sorry for the delay in replying jimmybee but had trouble posting. I will break the post into chunks to see if I have better luck.

very succinctly put jimmybee I cannot understand the outpourings of love for this ghuy,he told us what he was going to do then the opposite came about,he was/is a dud of the first order as far as football is a concern, how the fcuk he got through the front door at CP is a mystery, then again we have a history of appointing the likes.

Disagree with your sentiments, I too remember the fifties and early sixties, the winning of the cup under Jock, then an unbelievable period. The games against major European opposition that we triumphed in during the sixties and seventies.
Unfortunately the big man was not the same after his smash, lucky t survive.
Delilah flattered to deceive, he does not have an eye for a good footballer, look a our defence, Tierne was discovered by accident.
We continue with players who clearly are carrying injuries, Brown, Lustig, there are players at Lennoxtown who would never have played under other Celtic managers, Ciftci, Ambrose, Scepovic are just a few.

He has colluded in the ongoing signing of dross and continues
to play out of position.
He should have been shoved after Malmo, being two goals up Johansen missing a sitter, then the usual collapse.
Another manager would have triumphed against Maribor, we were leading, also against Malmo, Legia he did not have a clue.
I am glad his time is up and look forward hopefully to someone that can stand up to the machinations at Parkhead.
Last night typified Delilah!
A nice guy but football is not forty five minutes, then it is over

Tierney was not discovered by accident anyone who seen him play for the development squad could see he was a player in an instant (Brown was attending these games btw)he had the physique, the ball skills and the engine to get up and down the park.
The fact Izzy was so average certainly hastened his arrival but at least Deila seen fit to put him in there.
Griffiths,Rogic and McGregor have all improved under Deila but it would seem to appear any positives are instantly dismissed as either luck or coincidence when it comes to Deila?
Pathetic.
Leigh Grriffiths has just hit 40 goals in a Season.
He did that playing in a lone striking role in a system heavily criticised by many on here and elsewhere and yet even though he still did it.
Peraps Ronny Deila knows a wee bit more than some give him credit for?
No ignore that it’s just coincidence.

TKS your comments, one other point, Celtic as a team over the last five years have underachieved, not the quality of the players he managers. Give Chesney his due after Bratislava he learned his lesson, setting his team up to play to their level.Look at his back line, also midfield and forward line, Skippy.
His team played well, Lenny I liked, as a Celtic player, but he lost the plot as manager, should have been shoved after Ross County.
Beating the then Rangers was important, but more so the trophies gathered.
I have worked all over Europe and USA, Canada and parts of Africa, Celtic are recognised as a force throughout the footballing world, Rangers were always referred to as Glasgow, now they are seen as a joke, or sevco

Here is the core of a team: Gordon, Bailly and Fasan. Janko, Simunovic, O’Connell, Sviatchenko, Mulgrew, Tierney. Bitton, Armstrong, McGregor, Henderson.Roberts, Commons, Rogic, Mackay-Steven. Forrest.Griffiths, Nesbitt.
Since no man is greater than Celtic, many on this site will need to decide that when Keane comes in, quarrels with Lawwell after 4-5 matches, and quits, leaving us high and dry, he will still be hailed as a hero who thinks he is greater than Celtic because he was once part of the oligarch’s game down south. Our only salvation is to play in the vaunted English League, with all their millions. Keane is part of the problem not the solution. Keane out? Naw, don’t let him in. Why? We’re not good enough for him! Many on this site who supported Deila admit we got it wrong. I bet that nobody on this forum will admit their mistake when it goes pear-shaped with Keane. Roy, prove me wrong but… Bring in Brendan Rodgers, Stevie Clarke or yes….Tommy Wright.

I’d happily take Peter Houston as manager, adyed in the wool Celtic man who at Dundee Utd and Falkirk has nurtured yound players well, bought wisely and has his teams playing good football, all on shoestring budgets.

Craig Gordon
Mikael Lustig
Eric
Mulgrew
Tierney
Scott Brown
Nir Bitton
Kris Commons
Stefan Johansen
Anthony Stokes
Leigh Griffiths
Now that’s a team that should have been the main nucleus of the starting 11 add Forrest ,Armstrong ,Mackay Stevens, Izzy,
Boyata, Allan. Rogic Roberts Cifti. McGregor. Then you have a decent squad.
How that starting 11 from that to what we got showed the manager was a dud.
A decent squad ruined. A top squad of 20 players from the above should have been managed properly, and cups along with the titles would have came our way, IMO.
He fucked it up big time.

These are just names of his who underperformed. You could put a list of the Molde team up then instantly forget about our lot. That’s how bad it is. Not just the manager here that’s at fault

Iancelt67

On a list* not of his

Iancelt67

Gordon rogic. Brown when fit tierney Griffiths and bitton. Would make the Molde team maybe. That’s a Norwegian team were talking about here with the same budget as shettleston rovers

I’d say 70 % managers fault and excuse my maths 100% the boards fault for where we’re at . Really we should be able to field a reserve team to win spl and a team to compete in Europe with the $ we have. However unrealistic a notion this may be it’s sort of true
