Celtic Diary Tuesday February 9: And Now, The Solution

Well, in a minute or two.

First , though, there’s the Scottish Cup draw. both of them.

Initially, Celtic were drawn to face Andy Murray in the quarter finals, but those sharp eyed chaps at the SFA noticed that something was wrong when the hot ball melted and burst open, and as that meant Second rangers could be forced into an away game, they had to do it all over again.

Embedded image permalink

This time , Celtic drew a home tie against Morton, who haven’t beaten the Celts since the last time they played them in the Cup, and happily for all concerned , Second Rangers got their traditional home tie, this time against the winners of the dumbarton -dundee game. If they can overcome Kilmarnock at rugby Park that is, after the plucky new club held the Ayrshire full timers to a draw at Ibrox.

An Ibrox which, interestingly, had the top tier of a stand closed for safety reasons, presumably because there was a real fear supporters would jump off if the new club failed to progress.

William Hills betting for the tournament makes for interesting reading;

Celtic 8/15

Rangers 9/1

Hearts 10/1

Hibs 12/1

Ross County 12/1

Inverness 14/1

Dundee 16/1

Dundee United 20/1

Kilmarnock 25/1

Dumbarton 500/1

Morton 750/1

A club that has never won a major trophy, managed by a manager who has never won a major trophy, featuring no current internationals, is second favourite.

Crowds at Dumbarton gathered to show what they think of the new club;

Mind you, the word “William ” features in the name of the company-or is it club?-so that may explain things.

john Brown, who used to play for the original club from ibrox, clearly hasn’t noticed what happened to them, paid tribute to the tribute act when he ignored reality and rued the fact that Celtic were not facing Second Rangers:

“If there was a time you wanted to get Celtic it would probably be now.

“I was at the East Kilbride game and I know it’s hard for Celtic because it’s a no-win for them because people are expecting double figures – but I just felt they were lacking something.

“I don’t know if it’s just on the back of the two defeats and pressure building up on the manager. That soon builds up too.

“I honestly felt Celtic put out a decent team on Sunday and you could see with the conditions and everything else that they weren’t firing on full cylinders.

“I think the the gap would be less than it was last year. It’s a totally different squad.

“I would take the best team in Scotland at the moment to test the manager and the squad, to say ‘ this is what we really need’ or ‘That group of players can take us on if we get into the Premiership’. It’s building up for having a strong enough squad to compete if Rangers go up.”

Brown speaking publicly is a tough act to follow , and I have to admit, I couldn’t follow a fucking word of that.

The SFA have proved that even the simple task of pulling some balls out of a bowl is beyond them these days, and once we sort the problems out at our own club, surely its time to focus on that lot and put together some sort of petition to remove them…

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, and Ronny Deila has decided to ignore the issues concerning many Celtic supporters with yet another one of his deep and insightful statements;

“It can be tough sometimes, I will say that, It has not been an easy week but always you have to be prepared to go again. No-one likes to be criticised but I am a strong person and I can deal with it.

“My escape is football. The training ground, talking with the coaches I trust and working always to try to improve. If you were to listen to everything that people said about you then you would never get anywhere.

“You have to trust yourself, trust those around you.”

Has he even noticed that Aberdeen beat St. Johnstone and drew level on points at the top of the table-albeit having played a game more ?

I saw the score but I think we have to look after ourselves.

“I do not control what might happen in the games with Aberdeen but I can influence what happens with Celtic and this is a league that is in our own hands.

“We have the chance here to go on and win the league and the Scottish Cup and that is what I am trying to do.

“There are 14 games left to play in the league and our aim now is to get through them without losing any more points.

“That is always the aim but we do not want to get too far ahead of ourselves – it is all about the here and now.

“Over the next few weeks we have home games to Ross County and Inverness and we would like to try and press on. They are difficult games but we are at home and I hope that we can go forward.”

“We have to be together, The players have to feel free when they go on the pitch and the pressure on me is no problem. It’s also very important everyone stands behind the players when they go on the pitch.

“We cannot move forward if we are not together. We have some home games now and hopefully that we can use them to put ourselves in a good position.”

After three days of looking at the problems facing the club, we can now move to the solution.

What I have tried to do is to look at the issues from a number of different standpoints, and tried not to allow personal felings or bias to interfere with the conclusions.

One of the solutions may surprise you, so we’ll move deal with that first.

I’ve ,mentioned that players read the papers, and that management need to be very careful what they say in public. Some of the stories eminating from Celtic Park have been embarassing, no more than that, they’ve been mortifying.

It would be unfair to blame the PR department for, say , Calum MacGregors drink driving, or Leigh Griffiths singing songs, or James Forrest and his alleged willy waving, or Scott Brown’s pause for breath against a wall in the town centre,

Or Anthony Stokes for punching an Elvis impersonator, or four of the players running up a five grand bar bill in a London nightclub after a defeat back in December.

Five Grand ?

Fucking Hell, they even drink like part timers.

But its the PR departments job to deal with these stories, and its not the first time they’ve failed miserably.

First things first, sack the entire department. Recemtly everyone from the board, the manager, and the players has taken their turn in dragging the clubs name through the mud.

Whoever does the PR isn’t , er,  doing it, so get him out of there, and get someone in who knows how to deal with the media. Failijg that, get someone in who has the balls to stand up to and the nous to manipulate the fourth estate.

But, of course, you cannot blame the PR department for the several indiscretions we have seen of late.

The players are behaving like kids who have the house for the weekend when mum and dad are away for the weekend. And the damage they are doing is along the same lines.

Who is in charge here ?

Really ?

It may be that Ronny is allowing them to function as adults. allowing them to make their own decisions. Carlton Cole, for instance, was apparently brought in to add character to the dressing room. He did this , according to the Sun, by loading a private plane with impressionable youngsters and flying to London to go on the piss.

Simultaneously taking the piss out of Celtic.

When the sackings start, and they should, he’d be the first out the door.

Scott Brown was allowed to let off steam a while ago, and was found collapsed, with his kebab in his hand, suitably refreshed.

Fair enough, we all need a blow out, and at the time, I figured that was fair enough.

but as stories emerge, it seems like his influence has carried on off the pitch as well.

Calum MacGregor forgot the golden rule where drinking and driving is concerned. Don’t do it. Don’t even risk it, as the consequences, even if no-one gets hurt, are simply not worth it.

And if someone does get hurt….

This incident more than any other surprises and alarms me.

My generation would think nothing of a couple of beers before driving. Not that I’m condoning it or advocating it, but years ago it was the norm.Thats why the limit is now roughly the equivalent of half a pack of wine gums , as it should be. The younger generation have a different mindset, and it wouldn’t even enter the heads of most of them to take the car on a night out. Thats why i’m disappointed with MacGregor, and wonder if there’s more to it than a daft wee boy not watching what he’s doing.

You’ll notice that all the above incidents are linked to the drink.

You’ll remember that Ronny Deila was big on fitness and diet when he arrived.

You’ll notice that the players are not as fit as they should be

You’ll notice that all the above incidents are linked to drink.

Oh,I already said that.

Is this indicative of a larger problem within the club ?

Its certainly a sign that Deila has lost at the least a degree of control over the players. We’ve had some legendary drinkers at the club in the past, but this is different. This appears to be more than a few lads occasionally on the beer.

A private plane to London.

Deila has no chance of controlling the players if all they are thinking about is getting on a plane and hitting the nightclubs.

It could be a sign he has chucked it.

I think , all things considered, that he has had enough of the media, enough of the support-or lack of it-and, as a result, doesn’t really give a toss what happens next.

His touchline stance, which is the style of a manager who wants his players to make their own decisions , is becoming more that of a man who is wondering if he left the deep fat fryer on, and his after match comments are more that of a man who has somewhere else to be.

Its not that he can’t do the job, he can, he’sproved that in the past. Its that he seems to have decided he doesn’t want to.

Some of you may feel i’m making excuses for him here, but I’m not.

His body language now tells us he’s tired. . History will record what has happened behind closed doors when someone decides to tell us, but the enthusiasm has gone.

For whatever reason, despite his claims to the contrary, he’s not bothered any more.

If he has chucked it, and I really think he has, then he must do the decent thing and resign. Not this week, but this afternoon.

Then what.

We are aware that another management team has been approached. We’ll run it past the legal people and then let you know who later today.

At the moment we’re checking the story.

Yes, we do actually check them.

However, that won’t happen yet. you’ll understand why later.

For now, we need to concern ourselves with the League and Cup double ahead.

Scott Brown made a statement the other day, ( Feb 4 ) which, although it was meant to reassure us, did exactly the opposite.

“There is always a title race. But at the end of the day we will win the league again.

“Am I certain? Yes. Aberdeen will fight us all the way to the end of the season, but we are three points clear and we know what we need to do and we know how to do it.”

We’re not three points clear any more. You get the feeling the above statement would be altered merely to say we have a game in hand…

Control of events is  running away from Deila.

Time’s up, I’m afraid. And the players know it as well.

Unless he can rally the troops and get back to the way things were twelve months ago. Except he , too , will know that the club have already decided to replace him.

All of this will become clear later, but for now it’s time to bring someone in , short term, to steady the ship. The fifth consecutive title is important, and cannot be allowed to slip away.

The problem, of course, is who ?

Who would take the job short term.

Who would be strong enough to command the respect of players and get them working again in the knowledge that he won’t be around next season ?

In all seriousness, Gordon Strachan isn’t doing anything. Asking him to help out for a few months is quite a sensible idea.

It would benefit him, in that he would get a chance to work with the young Scots on the books, and that can only benefit the national squad.

More importantly, the players would respond to him, and the club would get a much needed lift.

As for the new guy, you’ll have to wait until later on , for the Rumour Mill Special edition.

As soon as we get clearance from our man…

By the way, have you seen this video ?

Granted, these pair are no Colin Kazim Richards or Dedryvk Boyata , but I’d take a punt on them.

Selkirk were the team in the picture yesterday, correctly spotted by Selkirk Celt,

today, we return to that old maxim, the caption competition… with a picture of Celtic substitutes warming up t half time-well, they had their jackets on- but we’d like to know what they were talking about..

Embedded image permalink

Finally, I’d just like to say well done to Liverpool fans who walked out on the 77th minute in protest at ticket prices being hiked to £77 to watch their team. It’s about time that someone made a stand.

We hear, however, to prevent such a protest taking place at Celtic Park, Peter Lawwell is taking swift , decisive action, and will announce our most expensive tickets will cost £95

There is nothing mystical about running a football club, get players in that are winners, players that have the neccessary athletic/physical attributes for the task. The great Bill Shankly said “I studied a player more off field” before I signed him and if he didn,t have character he wouldn,t get signed sage words, winners beget winners,we have a penchant for signing players that are weak/average then keep them as if by some sort of alchemy the base will be turned into gold, head scratcher.

The idea that the idiot in charge did a good job last season,is laughable at best,Humiliated in champions league, beat at home by dumbarton for the first time in over 70 years, turning a 30 odd point margin into 17 ,now fuck knows if we will even win this one horse league, his time was up after the first leg against Legia ,totally lacking in any ideas, the board are total cowards not to have sacked him ages ago

Im confused yesterday all of us who questioned the special one were told we were fifa players detached from reality which was as patronising as can get for season ticket holders of many years who pay good money to watch dross.

so whats happened in 24 hrs.. im guessing the manager approached is stubbs which would do me for now , he has the managerial never say die attitude of lennon and will bring back henderson and stokes. Win win

The next manager can’t be a “punt”, (yes I meant with a P and not a C);) although…
Stubbs just hasn’t a track record yet!
By the end of this season he could be looking at failure to get Hibs out of 2nd tier after 2 attempts .
Also , that’s the only level he’s managed at .
Maybe one day , but he’s miles off proving worthy of Celtic manager.
Remember ,Mowbray did well at Hibs , and that was in the top league!
With a new club probably debuting next season , the choice has to be well considered , and not in a financial way.
I’m guessing you’re alluding to Michael O’Neill ,Ralph .
Not sure what I’d think of that either , to be honest .

“The fifth consecutive title is important, and cannot be allowed to slip away.”
Ralph, if you are right, then the club must do what it has to do. But “steady the ship”. Who can do that, at short notice? My allegiance is to a winning Celtic, not to Ronny Deila. Maybe you know something I don’t but my gut instinct is to let Deila finish the season and finish the Champion’s League qualifiers but we must win the League because I cling to the dream of ten in a row and I ain’t getting any younger. I have been very angered and dismayed at our lack of fighting spirit lately and there is no easy cure for that. A good honest piece of writing, well-done Ralph.

Monti,

I agree it is too soon for Stubbs. WGS would be a good interim appointment, and let us see how he does before considering him full time.
A management change costs cash and unfortunately this will impact on the budget available for recruitment.
I have no inside info but could it be that the prospect is Pelligrini? Maybe he fancies a more relaxed appointment(so he thinks).

Changing Managers whilst your team sit’s on top of the League and going into the last 8 of the Scottish Cup is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard coming out of a Celtic fans gub in my life.
This is fast turning into a platform for eejits.
Ignore the fact Aberdeen have lost more games than us
Ignore the fact they have scored alot less goals than us
Ignore the fact they have conceded more goals than our defence
Ignore the fact they are out both Cups
Ignore the fact losing ou central pairing put u back 6 months

In fact ignore all common sense and drive a guy out 19 months into a rebuilding process even theough he’s delivered a double and on the verge of another and blame him for the players acting the spoilt ,overpaid egotistical wanker’s that they are, that you create by continuously bumming them up to be something they are clearly not?

I seem to remember Jinky telling stories about Jock checking on the Pub landlords to see if they were kicking the arse out of their down time?
That would be the Greatest Manager of the Greatest Celtic/Scottish side ever.
The players fitness?
We have played over 100 games since the beginning of last Season had 7 weeks off.
Aberdeen have played 20 less games in the same time frame and had 5 weeks off.
It’s called fatigue ,fatigue brought on by UEFA’s wonderful forward thinking by making “Champions” qualify for a Competition called “Champions League”.
Not just one qualifying round no no we have 3 now to get by to even get a glimpse of the fools gold.
I say fools gold because the fact of the matter is it is the Money that those most vocal about it are concerned about…or the bragging rights that go with it.
Very little interest shown in the fact we got royally humped in there on the last outing?
We all want European Top Flight football but some of us actually want COMPETITIVE European top flight Football and not just a ritual gubbing over 6 games?
Anyone here seriously think we have a squad good enough to take on Europes best right now?
Deluded.
Europa League is our level if you need clarification go check out how both Maribor and Malmo faired in the big League the past 3 years.
Then compare it to our last outing? It’s almost identical.
You don’t need David Moyes or Gordon Strachan in charge we should be approaching the Pope he’s a keen football fan and also has divine intervention as a preferred Formation.
Wake up ffs and get real.
As Jessie Jay once eluded to ….
It’s all about the money ,money ,money
We don’t have it and we certainly don’t spend it when we do.
Therein lies the real problem.
Changing Manager does not alter our situation one iota.

I agree about asking wee Gordon to take over until the end of the season. He knows the club inside out and knows most of the players. He’d get the team organised and fighting for every ball from the minute he walked in the door until the end of the season. There’s also no competitive Scotland games to concern him with.

Get him in until the end of the season and then a new mgmt team this summer.

Yes it takes 3-5 years to build a side worthy of competing in Europes topflight.
Possibly longer if you keep punting you best players every window for cash.
You don’t think losing Denaayer and Van Dijk then losing Jozo and Mulgrew to injury has had any bearing on a poor defence this Season?

It takes maybe that long for a manager to build a new team that knows what he is doing. Ronny is a dud

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  John

He openly outlined what he was going to do before he started.
That outline is a better blueprint for success given the change in the Clubs direction regarding finances.
A dud does not almost win a treble in his first Season.
A dud does not take a newly promoted side from nowhere to champions in 4 years building a squad from scratch.
Jose Mourinho took the Champions of England to 17th in the League in under 3 months.
Is he a dud too or could it be his squad have simply underperformed at the start of a Season and as a unit?
Our “dud” has a defence that has underperformed and yet the side sits on top of the League.
How can that be?

Bgbhoy

Because the dud is the luckiest manager in the history of the club to be playing with no pressure week in week out domestically. An as soon as some is applied his team folds. Deep down you know he’s full of shit. Deep down you know his time is up.

Luck has nothing to do with the fact having played a game less than Aberdeen
we have scored 20 more goals
conceded 5 less goals with issues in defenc
been beaten less times
still in the Scottish Cup
Still on top of the league without even breaking sweat performance wise.
Nothing to do with luck everything to do with a system that has produced more goals in the opening 23 games of the season since 2003-04.
He’s unlucky our fucking board sold his prize asset and broke up a great defensive partnership 12 months into his tenure.
That had nothing to do with luck that was in the planning of the real culprits at Celtic.

How long does it take to build a side that can look like it gives a fuck, plays like it’s played before and is worthy of wearing a Celtic jersey? If you start with a pretty decent side anyway, does it still take at least 3 years?

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  CeciltheLion

A pretty decent side that lost to Morton at Celtic Park.
Conceded 14 goals and was humiliated in Europe.
Then lost Forster.
The writing was on the wall that’s why Lenny left he knew that Lawwell and co were not going to go that extra mile to IMPROVE his side.
No they were going to ruitinely strip the best bits and sell them for profit.
What Manager in their right mind will stick around for that when he’s alreasy proved he can take them to the later stages?
Enter the patsy Deila.
He has a bumpy ride in Europe with a totally different approach to the game.
Tkaes 6 months to get them operating as a solid unit capable of mixing it with Milan.
Almost completes a treble win a double breaks a league defensive record.
The Boards answer?
Sell Van Dijk send Denaayer back and lose all momentum and cohesion built up over the second part of last Season.
Skip forward and suprise suprise the new look Celtic is not CHampions League fare..(forgetting of course it was royally pumped the last time it was there).
Defence allaover the place.
Suprised?
Not me seen it coming in July mate.
The injuries in defence of course just compond the issue further.
The free flowing football witnessed last season in the running?
Disappeared with the absence of Brown an under performing Johansen Armstrong and Mackay-Steven.
The mobility gone we struggle to perform as we know they can and they have.
Suprised?
Not me bud common sense decrees when you lose the energy of Brown, the mobility of Johansen and Armstrong and the pace of Mackay-Steven you are going to struggle to replicate last years form.
The poor defence just complicates matters further.
All of these issues were and are out of Deilas control.
But of course the short sighted don’t see this all they see if poor results and losing goals.
You try argue and point out we have scored more goals than last season..they don’t want to listen.
You try show we have conceded mearly twice as many goals as last season..again they don’t want to listen
You try show that despite all of the above we have lost exactly the same amount of games as last season…again they are not interested.
You then try show them despite the poor defending ,despite the poor performances we are still in exactly the same boat as we were last season…no that’s still not enough.
I’m afraid alot of you have become blinded by the Champions League money.
The Peter Lawwell flannel and the bullshit narrative from dicks like Sutton..a man who failed in Management incidentally and writes for the Daily Ranger.
Cecil we did not start off with a decent side we started off with an average side then decided to sell the best bits.

Have to say I am not suprised this has happened. I posted a quote on here before and I am willing to bet the that it is the reason for this whole dressing room issues.
“I know of a no more ruinous path than the selective enforcement of standards.” – General Creech.
Basically if you set rules and standards you must hold your subordinates to those standards and crush them when they don’t adhere to them.
In the environment of Football you must set those standards high. otherwise you get half assed performances.
Everyone must know the expectation and goals must be set. Success in almost all things can be summed up in 2 phrases.
Do not steal.
Excellence in all you do.
I live by these 2 for $40,000 a year and I expect them to for their wage cap.

It amazes me the so called logic of some fans who use general stats to justify the crap we’re watching week in and week out. Mind some are just ornery for the sake of it. The time to change is now. Ronnie has learnt nothing in the time he’s been here, lots of fancy words about training, fitness levels, diet ( sounds like a liquid one) etc etc but it is all hot air. Some say leave him in charge till next European qualifiers, do you enjoy humiliation? I do think someone has kidnapped Ralph amd we’re getting a more logical approach.. The time to change is now,Minot bemoaning ourselves at the end of the season. Ronnie has lost the fans, those with sense anyway, he’s lost the players…think the optimum term is lost so he should too.

I don’t see that bringing in a new manager for the remainder of the season will give a big improvement. The manager may not the main problem. I don’t thick it’s fair to say he’s lost control because of players’ actions in their private lives. What sanctions does he have? Fining them, that’s about it. Leave them out and the team might just perform worse than otherwise. For me the problem is the defense and it’s poor performance is eroding confidence throughout. That’s why they can’t fight back: in their guts they feel it might not do the trick given the leaky defense. Even teams we beat have come pretty close to scoring because of defensive frailties not because of their opposition’s goalscoring prowess. Look at the defense at set pieces and you think there’s a more than 50/50 chance that ANY opposition will score. That must create nervousness among the players and then add the crowd getting on their backs. Not a recipe for upping one’s game.

I’ve said this one hundred times and I’ll say it again: a 1 million or even a 2 million pounds player will not necessarily consistently out perform one that cost a lot less. At that price he’s probably put in some good performances against average teams, i.e. in Scotland or abroad and that’s why he’s been bought, not for his amazing skills – if he had those he would have been picked up by bigger fish than Celtic. A bad day, a determined opponent, a bad playing surface can all render these acquisitions no more than average. Football has changed forever. It’s all about the money if you want to progress in Europe and Celtic won’t have that for the foreseeable future. By all means develop the young Scottish players who want to play for Celtic but don’t expect them to be world beaters. They would probably need a good sprinting of decent more mature players to win the Scottish league.

Fabulous post so on the money.
Been arguing this point for years.
We pay more for less because of who we are and where we operate in the market.
We have the richest league in world football on our doorstep meaning teams with a tenth the size of our support and history can easily pay more for players than us.
This bumps up our costs..
Armstrong is a prime example.
Had Burnley not shown an interest we would have paid less.
If we wee operating in the Scandinavian market he would be getting paid £5 at most and would have cost us less than a £1m to buy.
The money he’s on does not alter his ability one iota.
We could have spent £10m on him.paid him 50k a week and he will still only be as good as he can be.
Which this season incidentally has not been that great.

I think the point Ralph was making is that he thinks Deila has already mentally “chucked it”.
I don’t know whether that’s the case or not; but if it is , the players will sense it , and then we’re in big trouble re – the title.
Unfortunately , we have to leave it to Lawwell to sense where Deila’s “head is at”; unfortunately , since he’s compromised, as Deila’s appointee – so can he be trusted to give an impartial call on this?
We can only hope he can , or has, (made an impartial call).
If there’s the slightest doubt about Deila’s desire then they would need to act now .
Either way , I believe the long term decision has already been made .

Just wondering at what point do players take responsibility for their own actions, their own performance and their own attitude to being a highly paid professional footballer?
Seems to me the fickle fan nowadays holds the Manager responsible for every aspect of these overpaid show ponies flawed personalities?
If Deila is sacked before completing this Season then for me at least it won’t be his own doing?
It will be because we have a Board who continuously hoodwink the bulk of the Support into thinking they are doing a super duper job at making Celtic a success.
The fact is they have downsized the squad not in terms of numbers you see but in terms of ability and overall capability.
The main goal since Pete Lawwell walked into Celtic Park has been to reverse the financial hit we took in putting Celtic back on the road to success again.
This all goes back to the window e signed Willow flood for me and missed out on Fletcher.
Strachan did a good job under the circumstances yet he like Ronny has a divided support due to his previous career in Football.
SInce then we have continued to spend less.
CHip away at expectation not big chunks but wee almost insignificant chips that went unnoticed.
All the while the massive Debt to the Co-op was bring reduced.
The appointment of Mowbray was a mistake by the Board which they quickly rectified by appointing an untested Neil Lennon.
They played the “Celtic Man” card and it paid off the support back in their grasp back to work on the downsizing and a swift change of tactics due to the Implosion at Ibrox.
The sale of McGeady financed the rebuild of Mownbrays disaster, the revolving door nearly flew off it’s hinges as players after player spun through it.
Exiting times ahead the thunder was back.
“Debt Free” and “Stand Alone Club” wee the new Mantra as Celtic without a viable challenge changed tack and focussed on Europe.
2 Failed attempts under Lenny to get to the Champions League was deemed as acceptable for a rebuild..he was after all “Celtic through and through”.
Third attempt was a fabulous result however, beating Barcelona oging into the last 16 a terrific achievement £18m worth of glorious gravy poured over the top.
Marvelous the Board salivating at the thought of more.
The fans in Paradise once more.
Ki and Wanyama exit to England however …but hey “were debt free” and this is our policy…buy to sell, bring in potential improve it,use it and move it for massive profit.
The new Mantra in full flow fans delirious at the thought of untold riches, glory nights in Europe and a stand alone Celtic disappearing into the sunset leaving Scottish Football behind in a wake of trophy laden, gravy soaked success.
Nirvana for some.
The debt however still hidden all £16m of it getting serviced as usual at 400k a quarter..as agreed.
Next Season not so straightforward, new faces taking time to settle and a bumpy ride into the CHampions League, the loss of Hooper Wilson and Wanyama causing ill effect we struggle by Shakhter Paahandy the One dimensional sheep killing, long ballmerchants from Kazakhstan.
A bars width and a goal line clearance from Matthews keeps us in the moneyball game…fans rejoice as if we had won the Big Cup.
The Board rejoice at the potion of Golden Gravy soon to hit the Celtic Park Coffers.
League was a canter the Cups however highlighted the issues of losing key personnel every Summer.
Out both Cups to Morton and Aberdeen then oyally pumped in the Champions League resulting in 5 Loses and 1 win scoring only 3 goals whilst shipping 14 reality had started to dawn on some something is not quite right in Paradise.
Neil lennon walks shortly after Johan Mjalby.
This confirms suspicion all is not so rosy at Celtic Park.
2 Seasons of Champions League have passed over £20m has been made from the sales of players and now Foster goes.
Celitc Park gets a facelift, we secure the Opening of the Games and as a result we get a nice wee bonus as a result.
We’re Debt Free, we Stand Alone the Board rejoice look at the shiny shiny.
The debt however only decreases to £14.4m
New Dircetion!
New fresh faced Manager with no baggage, with new ideas and a promise of focussing on youth as well as Europe!
All is well folks we are after all a “Champions League Level Club” a “Global Brand”.
Don’t worry we the Board have it under Control…
Forster is sold for a Club record Southampton back to feeder Club Celtic stump up some more lovely cash.
The downsizing continues as a rake of loans come through the door..no time to secure targets you see.
Fans grumble but hey we are the mighty Celtic no challenge in the League what does it matter Europe is our Playground ty the veal here have some gravy.
No catch we’re Debt Free…except the Accounts now reveal the £14.4m Debt that’s just been re negotiated.
To be paid off in July 2019 In full.
Deila takes time to get things rolling,Aberdeen emerge as genuine threat bums start to squeak,Europes a bust no Gravy this year to pour on the downsizing,no Debt Free mantra to roll out, plan unfolding back to reality for some.
Empty seats now the issue, bill receipts now a problem the great plan is flawed.
Panic set in. A league Double, almost a teble and a decent display in the Europa saves the day.
For most but not those who skipped off to Nirvana no they believe it’s a blip caused by a Manager clearly out of his depth.
To this Season… Van Dijk punted Gravy in the bank Denaayer back to the Uber Gravy Sheikhs at Man City they play their trump card.
Sumanovic signed a player of great potential is signed as is an unknown Man City defenderas god as Denaayer they say..time will tell.
Injuries kick in,first Mulgrew then Lustig,then Jozo,then Janko,then Brown.
Too much for a down sized Celtic to cope with the crack start appearing within.
The fanbase now split between those in the know, those who think they know and those who knew all along.
We’re not the Mighty Celtic.
Europe is not a given
We are not Debt Free
The Board have played a blinder in every sense of the word.
The fanbase has been seduced and duped.
The League is now Competitive thee wins are not now a given.
The Board have nowhere to run the cat is out the bag.
What will happen?
Sack the Manager of course and deflect the blame wherever they can.
After all it”s not their fault the delusion has been shattered is it?
No it’s the fault of the Manager he must be the one to fall on the Sword of Damocles being wielded now by an angry support.
Well by some of them anyway.
Sacking Deila is not the answer.
Removing the real problem is.

Agree with most of what you’ve said Charlie , particularly re- the real problem being at the top ; no ambition to do anything with the club ,therefore no real direction .
My belief is that DD really came in A/ as a financial “minder” to make sure the club was never “bullied” again by banks and their cohorts ( we know Murray was a driving force in the pressure put on the old board by banks, and behind their obstructive behaviour to Fergus when he tried to deal with them);yes we do have debt , but none of us need have sleepless nights over circa15m debt whilst Desmond is at the club. That safety and security is what / and all he brings , and all he ever intended to bring ,I believe.
B/ As an outside bet ( he’s a betting man) there was the possibility of EPL football , and a lot of money to be made with his shares ; however ,he’s well connected and will have known like most of us , that this WAS , an outside bet.
The only other thing I’d say is ,we really should have beaten Maribor , and Malmo , even with what we had.
Both of those ties , we “grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory”.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  jpm 88

I agree on Dermot he’s not actually the problem in my eyes he is as you say security for the Club a Doomsday Card to be played if it ever came to an Ibrox type Timplosion.
The Debt is not a concern however the way Lawwell has used Debt Free as the reason for pulling in the belt (not his belt mind)is reprehensible in my view.
As has the stand alone b/s.
He has duped fans into believing that prudence in these times of Austerity is the best option but that in his words if a £6m pound player becomes available we would deal.
Utter nonsense all that has tanspired is we have continued to buy on the cheap sell big and hope for the best it’s enough to remain good enough to challenge in Europe.
It’s failed as a policy that money has gone we have failed to make that objective yet his rather impressive Bonus has remained intact.
DD needs to take action but I don’t think Deila is the issue.
A change of mentality is needed in the Board.
The Support deserve better than what they have been delivering.

CeciltheLion

Agree with most of that except that, notwithstanding the downsizing, Deila’s shown no ability tactically, with player selection or hiring, man-management, motivation or continuous professional development. He has to go.

The arrogant, contemptuous board also needs to go but that can’t happen as easily as we can improve on Deila.

Charlie Saiz

Cecil he has his failings (as do all Managers) but I don’t think you can make a competitive Champions League side out £1-2m signings bud.
I get most want to be thee every season but I would rather we did with a capability of at least competing because folk will soon tire of watching teams roll us over £20m in the bank or not.
His ideas are good perhaps his implementing them could be better.
Mind you that been said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks and perhaps some within the squad are struggling in that respect.
Interesting the younger ones seem to be thriving the most?

CeciltheLion

Sorry to be a cynic but I feel that the youngsters are thriving most because they’re not worldly-wise enough yet to see that the emperor has no clothes. The senior players think he’s like Gibert & Sullivan – words and music signifying the sum total of fuck all – but the kids have little to judge him against.

No evidence for this; just a gut feel so could be well short of the mark. If it’s right, though, it’ll take close to 10 years for him to build enough with his own load of youngsters. That’s way too rich for my liking.

I’ve heard all the evidence and escaped all the premature ejaculations! I like conspiracies and like to think some of you have the inside ‘dope’, behind the scenes. But…. Deila himself said he will resign if he doesn’t win the league and that’s what we should accept. Nobody we bring in can guarantee us the 5/10 in a row. MON coming back? Cum all you want Monti, that will never happen. MON is a fossil from the loadsa money era and wouldn’t know what to do with the young Scottish players we have. Stubbs? Really? Moyes? Aargh. On balance, leave Ronny Deila to finish the season and see if he can do better in Europe. Meanwhile, we must support our team. If anybody on this site can actually prove Deila has lost the dressing room and there is a hot new managerial team lined up then please give us the evidence. Am I pleased with our recent performances? Feck no! Are these performances the measure of our team. Equally, feck no. I think we will win the League, take what we can from the Scottish Cup and qualify for the Champion’s League because by then we will have a more settled team and a more settled defence—finally! Deila deserves that amount of time and fair-minded supporters should give that to him. If we don’t get five in a row he goes. Simple. Then we get in our/your cloud cuckoo land wonderteam.

Maybe once you’ve done that I’ll think about pointing out why you’re stuck about 20 years in the past when it comes to understanding fitba.

Monti

Ok then I’ll answer, just like Whoriskey, it is very simple, Moyes learned his trade and reputation as a good manager at PNE ( Preston North end), he then became Everton Manager for an eleven year period.
Throughout those eleven years Everton finished regularly in European placed positions and seriously punching above their weight.
He was named League managers association, manager of the year three times during that period, not bad going when your peers are Sir Alex, Mourinho and Winger.
Moyes work was so impressive at Everton he was offered the biggest job in English football at Manchester utd.
Now you can argue with me all day if you like, however to say Moyes isn’t a good manager, you are also arguing with Moyes Peers, who all rate him highly.
The reason that I have suggested and will continue to suggest Moyes as a Celtic manager is this, he ( particularly at Everton) put sides on the park who were motivated, organised and played with a real tempo and passion.
All the things that this Celtic side is missing, put simply ( whoriskey again) Moyes has a way of getting more out of players and in turn his team excelling!

Moyes in!

So the answer is “3 League Manager Awards” and little else of note.

Everton are a well run club with a sense of financial wherewithal not usually seen in the English Premier League. I argue that you could put any vaguely competent in that job and they would do OK. Much like Swansea.

When he was given the opportunity to run the biggest team in said league he failed spectacularly. Given the opportunity to manage abroad he failed miserably yet you think he’s somehow the second coming of Stein.

If this is in fact ‘true’ and there has been a meeting were the decision has been made to replace the manager and your ‘Pish Stained Source’ knows this before Ronny, is nothing short of shocking. I would say that I’d expect more from the board, but the truth is, nothing would surprise me of this ‘cabal’ and the contempt they have for the club and supporters. Peter has to ‘fall on his own sword’, he hasn’t represented the Celtic cause in relation to all of the cheating that was done for over a decade and he can’t speak for CFC shareholders and fight their case for justice in regards to Res 12 while he sits on the board of the SFA. It’s a sad day to be a Tim and as for the posturing from posters who think this somehow validates their ‘greeting faced attitude’ towards the management team is nonsense. I watched the LG interview were the SFA showed the world how incompetent they are. But in 18 months LG has went from being a ‘daft wee boy’ to a healthy looking articulate young man, did RD have any part to play in this transformation? You bet your last £1 he did. I hope that the level of professionalism RD tried to introduce throughout the club, serves us as well as LG will over the length of his new contract. Ronny Deila ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. HH

devoy makes some sense here. but sacking a manager when they are still involved in major competitions and vying for supremacy isnt uncommon look at zidanes takeover at real. the reason why? because the expectations of that vlub are high. in our league that mentality is relative to the argument why ronny should go.

the smear campaign makes me sick and it wasnt long ago we were creaming our knickers over an 8-1 win. however, the displays of good stuff are spasmodic and are aligned with erratic team changes and the character of the management team. its chaotic. give the fans what they want if its pragmatic strachan with his boring but effective tactics then so be it

Can I remind everyone Saint Martin spent over £20m on a squad that already contained Larsson Lubo and Mjalby and won FUCK ALL in a season?
You slag of Man City Chelsea Rangers for buying success then dismiss the fact he did it too and failed to win anything one season during it?
Give Deila Larsson Mjalby Bobo Boyd Thompson Lennon Lubo Sutton Hartson and ask him to get us ready for the Champions League.
Anyone think our performances might actually improve?
NONE of the present squad would get near his side.
The blame fo that lies in the Boad room.
That shower have raked in £60m in 3 years in Champions League and Transfers and e are buying players at £1-2m hoping they are good enough to get to the promised land.

So the e Tims diary is now changing sides!! Momentous times!

I think if you look the signs of failing discipline in the club have been there for a while – Brown, Commons against Malmo, Stokes for several reasons, etc etc

Apologies I can’t remember who it was but there was a comment in the diary some time ago, but which did have a ring of truth to it: Ronnie had cancelled a day off for everyone except Commons, GMS then spat the dummy as he was due to spend time with his girlfriend, and lo he too got the day off. A small thing, but it chips away at the managers authority.

The story may well be BS, but I have been getting the sense the players a e now running Ronnie rather than the other way around; while he stands with his petted lip like a kid-on hard man the players are calling the shots. They sussed him out as players will do, know his weaknesses and have forced him into climb downs, for instance about drinking, diet etc, I dare say the tomato ketchup might even be back on the tables at Lennoxtown.

I doubt even Charlie can argue this team look any fitter than other Celtic teams, in fact given the repeated occasions in which the team have gone behind and shown very little reaction, I’d say they could well be less fit.

Its human nature unfortunately that people will always look to skive and do as little as possible at work if they feel they can get away with it, and we seem to have a group of players who know they have the run around on the manager and are not keeping up the standards in training and in their own time to be as fit and sharp as they should be.

And well said re drink driving, it’s a thing of the past, rightly, and why a highly paid player cant either get a taxi or a sober pal to drive him home is beyond me.

When they fuck up it is the Club that should be dealing with them for it is the Club who pay their Wages, have a legally binding contract with not Ronny Deila.

Their big claim for the job in the eyes of some Celtic fans is a previous link to the club and some form of coaching/managing in the English Premier League.

If ronny has chucked it then we have to change asap. He doesnt have any control over the players, for it looks like there is no motivation for him or the players anymore.
If he doesnt go and wants to keep trying and the board dont do anything then we as a support must get behind him and the team for the remainder of the season. A season that we could end up with a double or nothing. We’ve got to draw a line under this sooner or later and just get behind the team whoever is in charge. We support Celtic not ronny or the board. If he stays lets stay strong and together and we will get over the line.
