Celtic Diary Sunday December 13: While You Were All Moaning…

I was watching something or other on the telly last night, and they cut away to the “sixty second news “, and during it the announcer, some young lass who probably shouldn’t have been up at that time of night, said that Aberdeen had pulled to within one point of Celtic at the top of the SPL.

How did that happen ?

Fair enough, we’ve all taken our eye off the ball a little.

You know why ?

Well, when the famous Glasgow Rangers died, it seems that their superiority complex and sense of righteousnous passed over from their supporters to ours.

The treble has now become, in the eyes of the media, and some of our support, the very least that Ronny Deila must do to save his job.

Read that again, and you might see how ridiculous it sounds.

Far from happy clapping , Celtic View Pravda style articles, the Diary has always sought to tell it like it is.

And here’s how it is.

The other clubs appreciate what they achieve, be it off the field with finance, or on the field with the occasional trophy or cup final appearance.

But not us, oh no, the size of our budget entitles us to win everything, and have a good run in Europe-despite not being able to attract any players of the standard required, not only because we can’t afford them, but because they don’t want to come.

Size of the budget. Yeah, thats what it’s all about.

Ask Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

Or Claudio Ranieri at Leicester.

The pressure on a manager who has won two out of the three domestic trophies in his first season, coupled with a last thirty two appearance in the Europa league, after an admittedly disastrous start to that campaign, is shocking.

Even if he were to be dismissed, can you imagine what the new guy would feel if he was told that a treble isn’t enough ?

Davie Moyes idea of a treble, or even a double is served by a barman, come to think of it, that applies to a single as well, but for some reason, he’s the answer to all our woes.

Having made an arse of being in charge of the club with arguably the biggest budget in the world, he found himself floundering and was replaced.

Then he went to Spain, found himself floundering, and was replaced.

Maybe wrinkly Rod Stewart, the Strepsil loving sore throated singer who occasionally tells us of his love for Celtic should bear that in mind the next time he talks to Adrian the Arsehole Durham on Talkshite radio.

We’re all entitled to our opinions, and he was just voicing his, but a high profile “fan ” publicly denouncing the manager is wrong. you’ll notice I used the word fan there, and not supporter.

Happy clappy ?

I’m anything but happy.

Football management isn’t like that FIFA videogame, you know. It involves real people.

And anyway, there was only ever one proper video football game;

Embedded image permalink

And the scores were just like the Celtic defence of the day as well.

We might have made an arse of it in Europe, but for me there is a feeling that we aren’t too far away from what we are trying to get to. we certainly won’t gget there any quicker by denegrating the players, the management and the coaches by telling them that they are shite.

Players, especially are a fragile bunch, and they are capable of reading ( well, most of them ) what supporters are saying about them. It makes them afraid of making mistakes, tackles become half hearted, possession ponderous and shooting less than direct.

Confidence is a big part of football, and when players hear from the support that winning everything they enter domestically isn’t enough, they will wonder what they have got themselves into.

Deydryck Boyata, whilst at Manchester City, was ahead of Jason Denaayer in the cliubs pecking order, and he had been ahead of him in the international stakes as well.

He couldn’tget to Glasgow quick enough, and now looks so afraid of making a mistake that he can’t wait to get rid of the ball. He’s not the only one.

Efe Ambrose isn’t a bad player, he has an African Nations cup winners medal. theres only about a dozen or so of them available every four years.

Craig Gordon concedes a couple, and he’s a disaster again, who never really liked Celtic in the first place.

Emilio Izaguirre, Stefan Johansen, heroes to zeroes in just a few months.

Nir biton-too slow. Leigh Griffiths -too lightweight. Can’t hold the ball up.

I could go on, but there’s no need.

Just go to any forum, or your twitter feed, and there will be something about any player you care to think of.

But hey, we pays our money, we can say what we want.

True.

But it wouldn’t hurt to give some encouragement now and again.

But there’s a couple of other things i’d like to say…

Still want a team of James MacLeans ?

Izzy mates shot da zombie

Arnold Peralta was a close friend of Emilio Izaguirre, and he was murdered last week.

Theres no more to say about that.

Anyhoo, on to todays game, which based on the table above is a must win.

GFS website gives us the teams, the news and the form…

I think that guys auditioning for a place on the Etims team.

If ronny deila is serious about building his new team, with his youngsters getting a shot at a first team place, and the old guard being made to feel a little less comfortable , then now is the time to start.

Build a team together beginning now.

Get them used to each other, and get them winning together.

Bailly, Janko, Boyata, Simunovic, Tierney, Biton, Johansen, Armstrong, Allan , Forrest, Griffiths.

Subs; Gordon, Lustig, Ambrose, Mackay Steven, Rogic, Cole.

Meanwhile, the latest developments in the various court cases involving Scotland snewest club have hogged the headlines for a few days.

Largely because its a big story.

Ralph there’s a massive difference to having a superiority complex and accepting what’s currently going on at the club. Of course we all want a treble and it’s not as easy it sounds but it cannot be used as accurate guage as to how this team is progressing. This manager asked to be judged in Europe an that’s what I’m doing. You cannot tell me that we have progressed or there are any signs of it. To go through a euro campaign without a win is shambolic. Average players have become poor. The system he deploys plays far too many out of position. The idea of the manager Ronny diela is a good one but he has not come good on his promises.

After the shambles of Legia Warsaw and Maribor Last season, Deila said ” we will be ready next year ”
When we went out of the CL to Malmo this season he said ” we will be ready next year”??

He is out of his depth!

Exactly Ralph, shrill, hysterical and cloud cuckoo land in terms of the world we find ourselves in. Building a new team takes time and we are given the luxury of building it in Scotland we we have room to experiment. There is a scent of entitled around the place and we need to guard against that. Delia is unhelpful with his constant talking about how good he is etc. Time for our management team to shut up and work harder with the squad. Eventually sense of team, sense of all in it together and hard work will see us do very well in Scotland and with some luck qualify for CL

Ralph,
When you come down from the Euphoria of the win this afternoon you badly need to get a grip with reality. Celtic have down sized dramatically in the past two years. Deila,s appointment has been part of this process. The performances over the past two seasons may be acceptable to you but not to any supporter who has pride in their club which you obviously do not have.
As for positivity, are your comments on David Moyes and Rod Stewart positive? Your article would be music to Peter Lawwell and Mr Desmond. It is very clear that your hostile to any rational debate on this forum.

Liam

Charlie Saiz

We have downsized squad wise this is true but to suggest we have done so in Managerial terms is wrong to say so.
Neil Lennon had no Managerial experience when we took him on.
Tony Mowbray had 5 years experience as a manager in that time managed to get WBA promoted from the Championship by winning the League and also reached an FA Cup Semi Final.
Ronny Deila had 6 years experience as a Manager he also took a side from promotion to winning their National Title and also their Cup Final.
The issue would appear to be snobbery here as regards Deila coming from a less fancied League?
Hence the calls for Moyes etc.

Ralph,
Ronny Deila and Celtic were cheated out of a treble last season, for a debut season this would have been an outstanding achievement.
In fact let’s be honest here, a treble is a fantastic achievement ANY season, however if the club want to attract better players and create the finances needed to do that, we need Champions league football.

To be fair to the supporters of the club who are being critical, our overly paid CEO tells us how vital CL football is to the club.

Good result today after a dodgy first 25mins.

Great result. Any bad thing could have happened today but didn’t. Well done bhoys. Hard work, good result. Winning these matches builds confidence and will get us better in Europe. Since the zombies have gone, the MIBs now feel that Aberdeen must get last minute penalties at home. They’ve won a lot of matches with penalties this season, surprise, surprise. Let’s now put some daylight between us and the rest…the only time we’ve won a European trophy we also won the Treble. There is a connection.Well done big Ciftci. Rogic was superb and wee Forrest a delight. I credit Deila for improving the last two I named.Well done bhoys!

Boyata had a good game today scored a goal and never put a foot wrong and coaching staff have obviously had a word about his errant passing.Rogic was superb and the pass to Cictci in the first half was genius.Ciftci had his best game in the hoops and you could see the confidence coming through after his first goal. 0 goals conceded against as good a side in the league as there is . Armstrong is not at his best but steady performer. This was not our strongest team but we stayed with it early doors and took control as the goals went in . So we are steadying the ship at the back ,the centre halfs are getting more game time together and it is beginning to show in there confidence ,particularly Boyata. We just need a run of results like this as we go forward and the treble could be on . Looking forward to the January window to see who comes and who goes but the nucleus of a really good side is beginning to take shape.☘☘☘

How many times have you said that about Celtic ,the reverse scenario I mean .Every team makes chances and generally the one who scores wins the game. Boyata played well today as did Lustig and Izzy and Gordon . Simunovic was a bit off but to win a game 3-0 away from home does not merit your criticism . You are letting your dislike of the manager cloud your judgement when the team does well.

That is not supporting Celtic Monti?

Charlie Saiz

One of our number was on Twitter during the game he said this of McGregor..
“Calum McGregor is a liability in central midfield. Can’t tackle , lazy and positionally inept. ”
Not what I seen by far the best passer on the park first 30 minutes, workrate off the ball excellent as it usually is and supplied to great corners for the first 2 goals.
Considering he rarely plays that deep and was put in there due to the injury of Bitton who would otherwise have started I think he grew into the role well as the game progressed.
Armstrong for me was poor yet again as he has been all Season.
But no knock the young guy instead.

A Sevco neighbour tells me whatever we do domestically isn’t up to much because of “lack of competition”. I supose he means ‘Sevco’?!? I’ve invited him onto our site where he’ll blend in just fine and find some soul mates. MSM tell us us Deila must be judged on Europe alone. Why? Because they fear ten in a row and want to disrupt our club as much as possible. The Great Waistcoat failed miserably in Europe for years with a huge budget and I never heard a squeak of criticism from the minty lamb brigade about that. Also, they fear the future because they know Ronny wants to be here and remain, just like Henrik did. I too want to play (and beat) Barca, Milan and Man Utd. just like we did in the recent past. We can only do that by developing young fit players who don’t yet have fear of big money and big reputations. It will happen! Well done today bhoys! Hail, hail. We don’t pick our opposition but we still must beat them. Credit where credit is do. I believe the bulk of our Celtic fans are fair-minded.Moyes? I agree CS McGregor was steady today and his passing was much better than in his last two games . I don’t see the necessity to Knock any player in a team that wins after a good performance 3-0 away from home against one of the better sides in the league. I thought we handled there biggest threat really well Izzy did a job on O’ Halleron after a first minute fright.

Monti

The first 25 mins today Celtic were dreadful, the defence was once again a shambles.
O’ Halloran should have put them 1-0 up in the FIRST minute!
I thought he picked the wrong team today as well, I would have put Rogic in the middle beside Johansen and put Commons up front beside Ciftci.

I thought Ciftci looked a lot better today and like I have previously stated, the guy will score goals for Celtic.
Not bad for a ” Diddy ” eh Ralph?

The thing is though, if Griffiths was fit, Ciftci would have been sitting on the bench ‘ developing ‘!
Everyone on the bench apart from the comedic Ambrose should have started today!

What has happened to Stuart Armstrong?
Kris Commons must play in this side every week!

GMS? Was he ‘ developing today ‘?

Great second half, Boyata, excellent, Rogic strong.
Good article Ralph but the majority is the support are not criticising the players. The management team are stuck in a time warp of one up front, players are asked to do things or played out of position.
Again we struggle when the opposing team breaks, lucky that Jojo did not connect with Halloran, a red card beckoning.
The team are frequently caught out at the back, three times in the first half, this is down to guess who the management team.
As has been stated we were cheated out of a treble last year, no doubt it will happen again, but most supporters only want the best for Celtic, sometimes this is lacking at boardroom level.

never understood this fascination with the treble. The league is all that counts. The cup tourneys should be used to rest the first team and give guys like allan and tierney games.

It’s not the individual competitions they can be won on and off by anyone in the league but the rarity of winning all 3 together is what it is all about.☘☘☘

I will say it again if you like?

The treble means less if we are a laughing stock on the European stage!

Do you think Jock Stein would be happy with our European performances this year and last year?

We are a fucking shambles!

C’mon Monti, you canny look at Big Jocks 1960’s 70’s reign through the prism of 2015. Totally different landscape. The Kellys nearly sent Celtic to the incinerator, makes Lawell look half decent if we want ti go doon that path…which a don’t.

Alright I have just about had enough of this crap. Here are the facts. Any team in this league can beat us on their day, just depends what we are like on that day. Over the course of a season it is highly unlikely that every time we are a bit poor the opposition in Scotland will have one of their days. It only needs to happen once in a cup though. Making winning the league something that is expected over the long haul, but winning both cups should not be taken for granted. Therefore winning the Treble is actually pretty impressive and I would go as far to say that winning it while rotating the squad and developing players (sometimes by playing them out of position) would be even more impressive.
Tom Rogic did play well today, but held the ball far too long on 90% of his dribbles, I can see Scott Allan (with his turn and pass mentality) being utilized in the next game.
James Forrest also played quite well although I always get the impression that it takes until the 30min for someone to stop the chicken and glue his head back on.
Nadir played quite well and is progressing, but naturally had a lower work rate than what Ronny is after you could see him remind himself that he needs to press the defense on more than 1 occasion.
Wee Mac Anyone who gives this man a hard time needs to sit and think about it for a minute. Last year he was an inside forward and an inside forward. This year he has played as a winger, inside forward and (somehow Ronny has him playing) as a defensive playmaker.
The 2 CB were impressive 2 moments of wtf? Which by our standards this year is about 60% less wtfs.

It’s not going to happen Monti unless he and the team really cock up the domestics so why don’t you get behind them to make sure they do, oops forgot that does not fit the agenda o Ronny out. It must put you in a bit of a dilemma though ? Support the team ,they win everything domestically and Ronny stays for another European Campaign.☘☘☘

What was the final score again ? Oh yeah 3-0 . Goalkeeper is a big part of the team Monti remember you have to beat him to register on the scoresheet. So defensively a great job today . You really need to do something abou the plat never mind the pmsl.

As usual we’re away from home after a European tie. Watched it up the pub with ma mates and I’m a happy bhoy. The only thing a care about every year is the league, the rest is all bonuses. The SFA and the press are crapping themselves in case we do 10. The huns are on their knees and could go under, and the SFA could get ripped wide open, and the press will have nowhere to hide. Looking forward to every bit of it, that’s how a see it m8, bring it on.

Not sure exactly what you mean by an “Internet Hardman” . However, I am clearly sick and tired of much of the “get Ronny out! A Treble means nothing” rhetoric. I am of course quite pleased that you are attempting to bash me because that must mean my argument is sound and although it does not fit with your rhetoric you are at the very least considering it. Best feedback you could have given.

If you’re happy with Deila, fair enough. But I’ve been supporting Celtic for 50 years and I’ve never seen a poorer team. My budgie could win the treble at the moment.

Boyata and Cifcti may look semi decent against a pub team but put them up against European 3rd raters and they freeze. Not Deila’s fault as he was recruited as a number 2 and promoted above himself. Celtic got what they deserved and the blame lays fair and square with Desmond and Lawwell.

Didnt see game..pity. i think its natural for fans to vent after that european campaign. I think a better coach would have got ud past malmo with the current squad.Anf eee wouldnt hsbe lost 8-0 to anyone. But thats gone european and scottish styles of play are different and ronny isnt equipped to adjusy styles.however we need to get behind the team. My opinion kerp ttonny on as s nimber two and get someone likr moyes in ot a ghood eu th opean coach preferanly spanish ot portuguese speaking who can attract south americans to thr vCardvlub.

I wouldn’t accept him as a number 2 at Celtic, he is out of his depth and he is going to keep causing damage.
Lawwell is equally disgraceful, a £1m a year to put an unknown, cheap option in the managers job.

Celtic supporters deserve better!

Deila out!

Monti

Reply to  iancelt67

Ian,
Lawwell Offered deila the job because he he wouldn’t be demanding of the board, he was cheap and would not rock the boards boat.
Lawwell himself described Deila as ” a gamble “.

Lawwell also tries to paper over the cracks by describing Deila as a “young, developing talent manager “?
Our style of play is woeful, the defenders can’t defend, the midfield constantly concede possession of the ball and we are over reliant on Griffiths.
Tactically in Europe Deila is shown up time and time again, we have lost our fear factor and our fighting spirit.
Europe has now demoralised a large section of our support, it has now become Something to be wary of as opposed to something that excites us.
The board sell our top players and replace them with raw youngsters who are nowhere near the standard of player that was sold.

I’ll give you an example of this boards mismanagement, Fraser Forster sold £10m, replacement? A goalkeeper who hadn’t played for 2 years, signed on a free?

That is a shocking gamble to take, Craig Gordon to be fair had a good season last year but my point is, why are we gambling?

Ronny Deila is hailed by some on here as a manager who is building and developing players, pish.
How has he developed Logan Bailly?
Tierney is only in because Izzy is past it, our two centre backs are not ready to control the defence.
Johansen hasn’t kicked a ball this season but is not allowed to be dropped, Armstrong and Mackay-Steven were two of the best young players in Scotland, have they developed under Deila?

Celtic are getting away with it domestically, but in Europe we have become nothing.
Lawwell and Deila have seen to that.

I see nothing in what Ronny Deila is trying to do, he is making it up as we go along, he knows it and so does Lawwell.

I notice the ridiculous Ronny Roar has stopped, why is that Ronny?

Good post monti i concur with most of what you EiEurope is almost forgotten about and people are fickle enough to regain false beliefs that its all going to be alright after the historic treble but its not we have an under 23 coach who will learn from this he is far from stupid but at whos expense

iancelt67

Anyway spose you could have darker periods. In eatnest there hasnt been a decent european run since seville and that team was paid for with reasonably big money. In some ways the celtic job is a poisom chalice . Could be worse imagine your team being put down to the third division spare a thought for our blue neighbours …. beyond blue neighbours i meant

Andy

Monti,
Lawwell Offered deila the job….. – agreed.

Lawwell also tries to paper…… – agreed, he should also shut his trap and stop undermining his manager that he chose.

Our style of play is woeful, the defenders can’t defend (they can, but make school boy errors), the midfield constantly concede possession of the ball (this one really pisses me off, I agree and what bothers me it never seems to be the same player in the next game.) and we are over reliant on Griffiths (agreed and he hasn’t been passing enough as a result, so much so that other players stop running in a counterattack when he gets the ball).
Tactically in Europe Deila is shown up time and time again, we have lost our fear factor and our fighting spirit. – Completely agree.

Europe has now demoralized… yup, but not me!

The board sell our top players… – right again

I’ll give you an example of this boards mismanagement, Fraser Forster sold £10m, replacement? A goalkeeper who hadn’t played for 2 years, signed on a free? – to be fair Gordon had been training and was already signed before Forster left.

That is a shocking gamble…. – less than you make it sound

Ronny Deila is hailed….. Logan Bailly? – From Logan Baileys time at Monchenglabach he is a gutsy player who is quick off his line, good at punching, but is quite eccentric. His positioning, technique and anticipation leave a lot to be desired. Give him time you will love him in 2x years
Tierney is only in because Izzy is past it, – while we were being linked with every LB the MSM could think of we came away without a LB why? Tierney! our two centre backs are not ready to control the defence. – Boyata may never be ready to control the defence, but I believe Sim will grow into that role.
Johansen – I agree I find that situation infuriating.
Armstrong and Mackay-Steven were two of the best young players in Scotland – raw talent with no adaptability, Armstrong can now play 4 positions and GMS can play 2.

Celtic are getting away with…. – Agreed

Lawwell and Deila have seen to that…. – you make it sound like it was on Purpose

I see nothing in what Ronny Deila is trying to do, he is making it up as we go along, he knows it and so does Lawell – I think we know my feedback on this.

I notice the ridiculous Ronny Roar has stopped, why is that Ronny? – the fans have turned on him and his Bhoys it will come back once he thinks he has proved all the naysayers wrong.

Good post Monti. Not quite in agreement, but I see where you are coming from.
