Celtic Diary Saturday December 5: Game Off, Stokes Forced To Sit In Stand

Following a pitch inspection this morning, referee Craig Thomson decided he didn’t fancy running around in this weather , and called tis afternoons clash with Hamilton off.

Now he, like everyone else will face pressure from the wife to go and get “christmas sorted “, condemning us to an afternoon of misery.

The official site added;

A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

ALL tickets for today’s game against Hamilton Accies, including the free tickets distributed to season ticket holders, will be valid for the re-arranged home Premiership fixture against Hamilton.

All activity planned for Celtic Park today, including the Scott Brown book signing at the Superstore, is also postponed. The signing session will be rearranged for another date, to be announced on the official Celtic website.

Today’s scheduled Celtic FC Foundation bucket collection has now been re-arranged for the home game against Motherwell on December 19. Collection volunteers are being contacted by Foundation staff to notify them of the new arrangements.

It won’t just be about the pitch, but also about travelling conditions, which are looking a little severe with high winds and rain ,

The Lennon CSC, of course, is not put off by such trivialities, as shown here where a couple of guys made an early start yesterday.

 However, they are now on their way back, having made it as far as the paper shop on the corner.

Ironically, the name given to the storm currently raging up north is Desmond-they do it alphabetically throughout the year, alternating between male and female names, the next one will be a girls name beginning with E- and isn’t it ironic that the first time anything with that name is anywhere near the ground, supporters are told not to come.

 Wheres my tinfoil hat ?

Whilst deep down most of us are probably secretly glad we won’t have to sit through the weather this afternoon, Scott allan will probably be a little more disappointed than that. He may well have broken into the team today, playing in front of Nir Biton and Stefan Johansen, and potentially, just like Keiran Tierney, made a claim for a regular slot.

 Manager Ronny Deila said;

“Scott has been very good from day one. It’s always tough to come in from a Championship club, up to the best team in Scotland.

“It takes time to adapt to it and the one word which is important is patience, and he has been unbelievably patient.

“He has worked hard every day, tried to learn, tried to understand things and now in the recent games he has come on and made a difference.

“That’s what I tell all of the players as well – show me in training every day, show me when you get time on the pitch that you’re here to do something, and that you deserve to play.

“And those players will get their rewards in the end. I think he is ready, so it’s a possibility.”

 “I think you can see that progress, I’ve seen it in training, it starts there and he’s very fit. He is very aware all of the time and wanting to learn and he’s had a couple of very good games now.”

And that pass to Leigh Griffiths in the Ajax game showed he is capable of something that no-one else is at Celtic these days…

 “I don’t think anybody in the stadium saw that pass before he made it, so that was a magic moment in my opinion. It was a high-quality pass.”

The player certainly sounds like he thinks he’s ready;

 “I obviously got a setback with a six-week injury but I have come back and worked hard on the training pitch. We have a few injuries so there are a few spaces available so given the chance I just need to try to make it my own.

“I’m feeling good fitness-wise considering I haven’t played much. The intensity in training gives you a good fitness level.

“I think now I’m ready, if the gaffer wants to give me the chance I will do my best and hopefully put on a show for the fans and repay him.”

“When I came here I knew defensively I would need to get back and help out, which I have tried to add to my game, and have a good work ethic when we lose the ball,”

If “We ” lose the ball?

Would it be cruel to remind him that it was him who lost the possession that lead to Ajax clinching a winner….?

Getting caught on the edge of the box wasn’t ideal but you need to bounce back from things like that. It was a learning curve for me and I won’t make that mistake again. ”

Fair enough.

So, Scott Allan could become the next youngster to break into the side, but what about the others in the Development squad, who faced Chelsea last night in the Premier League cup.

A YOUNG Celtic Development Squad were beaten 5-0 by a polished and well-drilled Chelsea side in the Premier League International Cup at the EBB Stadium in Aldershot.

An unforgiving opening 15 minutes of quick passing and inventive movement from the home team left the Hoops with a mountain to climb as they conceded three without reply before Kasey Palmer made it 4-0 just after 22 minutes with a well-struck free-kick.

The margin could have been greater in the first-half were it not for a string of fine saves from Leo Fasan in the Celtic goal but there was little he could have done for each of Chelsea’s strikes.

The Bhoys put in an improved showing in the second-half and managed to keep their hosts largely at bay, with Chelsea midfielder Charlie Colkett also seeing red for two poor challenges late on but they failed to find a way through the Blues rearguard before a late penalty from Reece Miller rubbed salt into the wounds.

The Celts will now look to get back to winning ways with next week’s game against Liverpool.

Tommy McIntyre made five changes to his team for the match with Tyler Blackett, Conor McManus, Joe Thomson, Innes Murray and Nadir Ciftci dropping out from Tuesday’s 1-0 win over St Johnstone in favour of Dan Higgins, Aidan McIlduff, Aidan Nesbitt, Theo Archibald and Calvin Miller.

The Bhoys were in a good run of form going into the match and were undefeated in the league but they were undone twice inside five minutes as the hosts’ slick passing and high tempo cut the Hoops backline open.

Same old story, the defence struggles against quality, which leads me to think that whoever is in charge of coaching defenders, which used to be Danny McGrain, is doing something fundamentally wrong.

Theres certainly a pattern, and maybe its time to deal with this issue.

Speaking of patterns…

Celtic took off Boerrigter at half-time after the Dutchman went down under a challenge in midfield before the interval..

Whoever was behind the scouting and signing of this guy should be told there is no longer a position for him. When the fee and wages are added up it can only be said that this deal has turned out to be the worst in the history of the club, and whats more, given the previous injury record of the Dutchman it was entirely avoidable.

Elsewhere, in demand, or not in demand, depending who you believe Second Rangers manager Mark Warburton has spoken of a heart to heart chat he had with owner Dave King;

The Anthony Stokes twitter controversy rumbled on, with manager Ronny Deila claiming it wasn’t just the tweet that lead to the players suspension, which makes sense. Stokes has had his problems, and maybe now the matter can be put to bed. Stokes has a future at Celtic, if he applies himself, according to the manager, but probably not as a player.

With every man and his dog offering their opinion on the issue, perhaps it’s worth noting the only one who has said anything sensible is John Hughes, the Inverness boss;

Elsewhere, there was anger from locals as the Forth Road Bridge was closed when they found out it was broken, causing traffic chaos;

And finally, can we help someone out who has been doing a great service of late ?

James Doleman, who has provided information from the numerous court cases involving a club from Ibrox needs a few quid to allow him to continue this work. If you can help, donate here;

Jame doleman fund

That way we’ll know what really happens, because, lets be honest, you wouldn’t trust the MSM , would you ?

The missing word was ecstasy in yesterdays little quiz, which presumably refers to the illegal drug, as opposed to something he maybe did in his spare time.

Blochain Star face AS Airdrie today, but the kick off has been delayed, not because of the weather, but for something a little more unusual.

What ?

Oh , by the way, the world of science has declared that a solitary gene that is completely different in humans and chimpanzees may explain why one species can talk, and the other cannot.

However, monkeys can still give a rousing rendition of Follow Follow when they get together.

Morning Ralph,
I’m with big Yogi when it comes to Anthony Stokes, get his head and attitude realigned,get him back in love with football and playing for Celtic.
Stokes is a Celtic man through and through, maybe Deila and the backroom staff should mix a bit of tough love with some support for Stokes.
Jim Mcguinness? What is his role again.
At 27 Anthony should be playing football….for Celtic!

Well done John Hughes, touch of class there.
Come on Stokesy, turn it around. HH!

Hopefully he takes the advice and we get a really good player back. I would hate to have him taking on our defence !!

Shug,
Listening to big Yogi it doesn’t sound like Anthony is ‘ trouble ‘, maybe the guy needs to start puting the work in again, go back to basics and give him the support he needs to get to the top of his game.
I think Stokes is a good player who can bring something to the squad.
This is a test for Deila as well as it is for Stokes, it would tell me a lot about Deila how he handles this now.

Four Three Three,im in that midfield tay,no that Ronny would know what that is,when we played Malmo away i told my son that Ronny would stiffen the midfield and play with Izzy at left back and Mulgrew beside Brown and Biton but was wrong again.

Ralph, said it last week, whoever signed Derk should have been sacked,by my count hes cost the club in the region of 5 million.Its crucial that we get overseas signings right,thats why our development squad and the top scottish players mean so much. Come on Stokesie put your back into it and get back to your best and all will be forgiven.Dellia sign a tough centre back and a tougher midfielder,the spine of the team needs to be harder.

Mike,
In terms of the guy who signed sicknote, you’ll probably find it’s the same guy who signed Virgil, Wanyama, Hooper etc.
You would think signing a guy from Ajax that he would be able to contribute something to Celtic.
What a waste of money.

Greetings. Seven-year long lurker here, regular pilferer of news and citations to share with my peers for mirth and merriment, but I do always use quotation marks to credit the author.

Went along to Aldershot last night, wouldn’t have known about it without The Diary so thanks very much for the heads up. Boerrigter useless, saw nothing of Nesbitt and Calvin Miller reminded me of Scott McDonald seemingly unable to stay onside.

Better showing in the second half but the story of the night was the fantastic wee sing-song with the English Bhoys who’d also shown up. Despite all that’s going on with the club just now, there really aren’t many better things in life than watching a team in green and white out on the park with like-minded folk around you. No home games around Christmas time when I’m up the road so I was very glad to get my Celtic fix in on this occasion.

Great work you’re doing Ralph, keep it up it really does make my day. New Year’s Resolution? Maybe sort the links out so they actually work, apart from that aw ra best!

I said it the other day in a different forum…if Yogi ever decided he’d had enough of being a manager, I’d take him as part of the first team coaching team in a minute. He’s got the charisma to motivate people, he loves the Celts, I imagine he takes no prisoners and he clearly gets on with Collins (the great misunderstood…see that article the other day). He is what is missing in our coaching team. That and a competent defensive coach (Kennedy out before anyone – get in Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi as a dream team)

Monti
8 years ago

Bobby,
I find it hard to speak bad of John Kennedy, still arguably the biggest disappointment in my life following Celtic, seeing his promising career cut short.
John would have been a Celtic and Scotland captain for years.
When you look at some of the shocking defenders we have had and currently have, none of them would have laced John Kennedy’s boots.

Real shame!

Bgbhoy Ii have spelled this out in a recent previous post . You will see a completely new ,younger ,stronger and hungrier team closing this season and starting next season. Stokes ,Commons possibly even Brown and. Johansen Effy Mulgrew are on the way out . The Lennon team will be gone and Ronny will have his own team on the park over the next two transfer windows. Change is difficult but it will lead to a better more successful side .☘☘☘

The question was asked above what he that is Deila brought to the table?
Well as a Manager he brought a League and Cup to the table as Manager of Stromgdset.
Neil Lennon as a MANAGER brought NOTHING to the table.
What he achieved as a player has absolutely nothing to to do with the answer.
As for respect Monti your respect seems to me to be very selective and certainly does not extend to Ronny Deila who is I gather the current Celtic Manager.

I saw two games where I saw signs of improvement,both ended in disappointment against Malmo and The Turks . We were 2-0 up in both games and playing really well . I thought we were going to take Malmo apart at that point . The problem seems to be keeping the intensity going. That and some horrific individual errors . Point one is down to the manager point two is down to the players involved.
I can’t say that I have felt any disappointment in the domestic form apart from the game at Kilmarnock where again we should have won by a large margin but turned the game into a disappointing draw. I did not see us playing Aberdeen at Pitoddrie so can’t include that game in my opinion but in the games I have seen this season we have played well and I have seen some great individual performances and goals. And we are sitting top of the league and we are still in the cup competitions. So in my opinion Ronny has improved the team and will strengthen the weaknesses over the next two windows. We have some of the best Scottish talent. In the squad in Bitton and Rogic we have two young quality foreign players and in Teirney again in my opinion we have one of the best emerging talents in the Scottish game. Simunovic needs both time and games but will grow into the position because he is a footballer. We need to strengthen in strategic positions I accept that but Ronny knows this but will need the Boards backing to acquire the right types. I rest my case but you need both vision and faith that it will all come good and I have a barrow load of both. COYBIG!!!☘☘☘

He spent £9m in the summer and has been backed by the board.
I sat watching Lennon’s team and Strachan’s team and back then I new the club would have to change the way they went about nurturing our own youth and integrating fresh and forward thinking ideals in every aspect of the football club. This is not visionary, nor is it somehow a new idea at the club. It is part and parcel of how a club should operate. This is not about Ronny Deila being a visionary or a magic bullet, this is about a manager who cannot motivate and a manager who is, as has been proved on numerous occasions, lamentable when faced with opposition of a decent standard. You highlight Malmo and Fenerbahce, this is were the alarm bells ring as far as Deila goes. it’s not about intensity, it’s about adjusting to the games conditions. When you have a lead, you make it difficult for the opposition, you defend, you fight and scratch to maintain it. On far to many occasions we seem rudderless for long periods of games and the ‘intensity’ you talk about is non existent.
Ronny seems as if he could do a job at development level, but in the cut and thrust of high level professional football management, the jury is well and truly out.

I wonder what Jock Stein would have said about a Celtic team, taking to the field of play with a solitary striker?

I thought derk sicknote looked quality the first couple of games he played , he was fast direct and had skill , theguy like many others hasnt been given a chance so i for one wont ridicule him , hes obv threw the towel in on his celtic career.

anyone else think we should bring back sammy in january , he would fit in on the left side like a glove providing the size that griffiths lacks

Not for me Del I think we seen the best of Sammy he’s struggled to find his feat elsewhere.
I think you ae also right about Boerigter the guy has ability such a shame his body is not up to the rigours of the modern game.

No.
We need to get Mackay-Steven flying mate.

Being out of Europe there is no need to bring in Samaras.
It’s a quality central defender that should be top of the list.

I’m 16% more irish than you so my opinion on who should be manager is worth more than yours.

What a load of pish. You’ll be attaching your communion certificates next.

I thought Celtic was open to all.

People that reference Irish political history in reference to Celtic usually were educated on both areas by the back of a cornflakes box.

The same types who get their current affairs knowledge from the MSM and turn on Celtic players / management at the drop of a hat later to glorify average enough performers.

Great logic. Put your mortgage on us becoming CL winners on the 50th anniversary 2017.

Been an ex pat for many years though still watch the majority of the games here in sydney
The worrying thing for me is that ronnys plans seem to be for the distant future . I know it takes time and the boards ploy of downsizing to producing a team just good enough to win the spfl seems to be a hard pill to swallow for the fans who pay their hard earned to watch mediocrity. And i mean mediocrity.

The team is gormless lacking bite at crucial times the passing is wayward if griffiths has a shocker then its up too bilton or rogic to score and that doesnt happen enough

There are glimpses of good play especially in the first fidteen minutes of european ties at home but after that it falls apart . Knowing the hungrr of the support for success this is no way near good enough its fucked.
I do think however without a hiddink or any other master tactician who can get the best out of players any other manager taking over from lennon would have struggled to do any better with rangers in the league to bring up the overall standard of the competition. So its down to ronnys long term plan until the fans have a gutful and demand action a fuvking pipe dream . Heres the scenario i dont even think they will get past the penultimate stage of euro wualification so no europa
I think ronny will go back to norway and be a success if he doesnt have a nervous break down
And some other bozo will take over

I compare this team to the wuality of the brady era the only difference is that theres no competition … thought ronny was the man as i thought barnes and mowbray would have been its not going to happen its the great desmond lawell swindle and im glad im not therr to witness it

Glad you are not here either iancelt . Don’t need ” Celtic Fans” telling us how much we miss the died club . Get enough of that over here from The MSM .☘☘☘
