Celtic Diary Friday November 20: Hey Hey Hey ! It’s AGM Day

And to illustrate the love our main man has for his club, I’ve used the same picture for the second consecutive year…

But just to be on the safe side, in case he does turn up, here’s an alternative opening line.

Dermot Desmond, the biggest  shareholder at Celtic , overcame a number of issues to make sure he was at todays AGM.

” Nothing was going to stop me , ” he declared, as he stomed into the car park and raced up the Celtic Way.

Embedded image permalink

though when he asked a fellow at the bus stop for directions, he could at least have shown him a more recent picture, rather than the one he took the last time he showed up for a meeting.

Embedded image permalink

In actual fact, it matters not a jot whether Desmond shows or he doesn’t. as Lawwell will have had his instructions, as will other directors.

No matter what is put before the board, if they don’t want to do it , they won’t.

But it’s always good to let them know how we feel, because then, when it’s all gone tits, we can say that we warned them….

To say the directors are unaware of fans feelings may not be entirely accurate, but to say that they don’t care might be a little closer to the truth.

And if they do ignore us, then that will simply encourage the view that they are as dumb as a man who thinks Les Dennis is a French fire engine.

We’ll cover the meeting tomorrow, because it’s a lot easier, no matter how predictable an event is, to report on something after it’s happened.

The SPFL has decided to allow the French national anthem to be played before the games tomorrow, in honour of those killed in last weeks atrocities in Paris. However, we have no word yet as to whether any Palestinian flags can be waved to commemorate thousands killed there.

Now there’s a thought for Thursdays Ajax game…

Celtic face Kilmarnock, and don’t forget to pop into the shops and grab a few items for those whom christmas is looking to be a thoroughly miserable time.

If we can make a little bit of difference, then we should do it.

Scott Brown is ready to face Kilmarnock. He’s better now after a niggling injury kept him out for a while, and arguably affected his performances before that.

“It’s always frustrating when you’re not playing, That’s what we get paid to do, it’s what we enjoy doing and that’s why I came to Celtic because we play in front of great fans and against some great clubs.

“We’ve had some good results recently, and the lads have done well against Aberdeen and Ross County as well.

“I’ve been doing a lot of running, changing direction, just to make sure I’m back to 100%. I’ve managed to train the past couple of days so it’s all good.”

He’s also been publicising his new book, which actually looks to be a cut above the usual football biography, largely because he was older than nineteen when he wrote it.

Although it doesn’t seem so long, this is browns ninth year at the club, and he looks set to get a testimonial, another rarity these days.

“I’ve got no regrets. I always knew where I’d end up. Coming to Celtic was the best decision I’ve made in my life. To be here nine years later, playing in front of
60,000 fans and walking into a facility like Lennoxtown every day, is brilliant.

“The deciding factor back then was speaking to Gordon Strachan and Tommy. I knew Tommy from Scotland. He was always texting and full of banter. He was great.

“You got a feeling of what the club was about and how they wanted to win trophies.

“They spoke a lot of about the club’s future but mostly about my future and how it would be so much better in a green and white shirt.

“They were right. Tommy was the man. He was a legend with everyone. He could tell you everything about Celtic from when the club was formed until the day he passed away.

“He was so enthusiastic about his football and playing for Celtic. He’d say how much he enjoyed his time as a player here and when he came back.

“You could see how much he loved it and how much it meant to people.”

“I got invited by the club to the Manchester United game. I went long with my agent and saw Naka score that free-kick.

“I just thought, ‘Wow’. There were 60,000 folk chanting after beating Man Utd at home. It wasn’t just one or two of those results at that time though.

Celtic were winning seven or eight times out of 10 against big sides. But that experience was fantastic and it really stayed with me. It gave me so much enthusiasm to come to Celtic and play in front of 60,000. When I did it was amazing.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. There’s been highs and lows but it’s all about how you come out the other side.

“Getting to the last- 6 of
the Champions League were definite highlights as well as winning my first trophy.

“The day Tony Mowbray handed me the captain’s armband for the first time was another. He knew how much it meant to me.

“When I first signed nobody would have believed I’d captain Celtic let alone Scotland. I was slightly immature. Slightly. I have matured a bit now.

“At the time people thought I was just a wee hothead but the love of playing and will to win pulled me through.

“It’s still in there. I want to win week in, week out. Now I just don’t go fighting as much with refs and opposing players. I’ve mellowed.

“When Neil Lennon came in as manager he put a lot of responsibility on me. He used to say that he reminded me of himself. F*** knows how that was – I could run!

“I also scored a few more than him. Not many but a couple.”

Brown has certainly matured, there’s no doubt about that, but you get the feeling that his real job as captain , both on and off the field, is only just starting.

He has to take on more responsibility, he has to step up even more as a leader, and show that he can influence results as well as performances.

 He’s ready.

Ahead of tomorrows game, one school of thought is to rest the key players, especially those who have been abroad in the last week.

But if consistency on the pitch is to be achieved, notably in europe where it has been lacking, then maybe Deila should just pick his best eleven and give them more time to gel.

After much deliberation, i’d go with this.

Therefore, the line up should be;

Gordon, Ambrose , Simunovic, Boyata, Tierney, Brown,Johansen, Armstrong, Rogic , Commons , Griffiths.

Lustig and Biton are suspended for the Ajax game, so there’s ;ittle point in them featuring. The only other debate centres on using Commons or Forrest. I’d go for commons because of his guile, but Forrests pace could be  a major factor in disrupting the Ajax defence, whereas Commons tends to rely a little more on making space for himself and shooting wildly from wherever he is, and frankly a barrage of shots aimed askew is something I think we’ve all seen  enough of this week.

Too soon ?

Elsewhere, and the ramblings of Alex Mooney, the freelance journalist who presumably has pictures of the Daily Records sports editor at last years Christmas bash, faced a real debate from on line blogger John James, who tweeted proof that any meeting betweeen Peter Lawwell and Dave king, as requested by mooney the Looney, would probably have to take place with the particpants on either side of a big wall with railings on it;

The full script is here, but i’ve taken the liberty of posting a few clips;

Case number: 5984/2013

Heard on: 13 February 2013

For the Applicant / Plaintiff: Adv Luderitz SC

Have a look at 4,3 above again.

King is up for contempt on December 9

If found guilty, he will be sent to prison.

Mike Ashley seems to think it’s worth it, spending a six figure sum to contest a thousand pound fine, which isn’t something you’d normally do if you weren’t sure of having what the Americans refer to as a big shit eating grin on your face when it’s all done.

An outfit he once turned up at Celtic Park in when he heard Craig Moore, the Australian defender, was starting for Rangers that day.

We also hear that Efe Ambrose is in a spot of bother, having turned out for his son’s lads and dads team the other day, which is prohibited in his contract;

Oh, by the way, there’s a tenner off all home, away and European kits at the club shop tomorrow, as the club get rid of stock in time for the three new strips next year.

I keep saying this, but no-one seems to care.

Right, here’s something to get you thinking …

This tattoo can be found on a former Celtic player.

Who ?

Finally, the tweets are starting to come in from the AGM. Can i , for the sake of clarity, point out that the chairman of Celtic is named Iain Bankier, and that is not, in fact rhyming slang.

And  where he gets the anti Semitic comments aimed at Lord Livingston of Parkhead from is unclear.

Sounds like there will be plenty to discuss tomorrow…

Ambrose at right back… Gettae f**k, I’d play someone out the crowd before him. Johansen??? I thought you said he should play his BEST 11?

obviously biton is suspended and you would have him in before johansen? forrest ahead of rogic every day of the week… he tore fenerbache apart and is on form at the moment… the only player who has pace he is a must imo!!!

Johannsens form is so bad he actually makes us worse by playing – giving away possession when players are ahead of the ball, “tackling” in dangerous areas giving away free kicks, strutting about like Beckenbauer letting players run off him. Give him sa spell out of the team in the U-21s until he gets some form back. Good player, but not presently.

Scott Brwon isnt quite the midfield Titan we’d like him to be,and his own form this season has been moderate, but he’s as god as we’ve got, and has almost always played for the shirt. He’ll deserve his testimonial when it comes but would like to see him boss ome big games for us again. Will never forget the Broony though. what an image!!

jesus, looking at the notes from the agm, seems the majority of shareholders back the manager and its me thats the clown and not ronny!! i must of been watching celtic in another universe playing this badly!!! and in the real world were top of our group and playing exciting attacking football

pl is a dick… he says we dont do knee jerk reaction and cites being 3-1 down at killie and not sacking lenny? so are we in the business of sacking managers at half time or did we not pull back to draw that game???

His Lordship made his public political and personal statement on how he wants our society to work. Take benefits from poor working people and redistribute them to richer people. This is irrespective of his religious beliefs and I was as surprised as anyone to learn that he was Jewish. Who knew? Anyway for Ian Bankier to claim that criticism of His Grace was because he is Jewish rather than because he is a hypocrite is disingenuous in the extreme. Very poor judgement shown by Mr. Bankier here. Also the nonsense about no political statements in Celtic Park is preposterous. Perhaps if they are serious, it could stretch to dropping the whole poppy paranoia, which one could argue was political in nature. One thing about our Board is that although they do a fine job of keeping us solvent and in existence, they do behave in a very dictatorial way. They want us to pay good money and tell us exactly how to behave or what we can or cannot say. They overstep their mandate on this Id rather hear them tell us the vision, the new sources of revenue, the match day experience, we pay a fair wage and we strive to compete in Europe.

Ian Bankier is indeed a total Bankier!

It is time for a clear out at CP!
Reading the notes from the AGM, our fans are treated with contempt by this board!

” We look after our managers, we develop our managers “- PL.

Yes Peter, especially those managers who don’t come knocking your office door and making demands of you.
If you and your board had backed Neil Lennon, maybe these two years ( and counting ) of ” development ” could have been avoided?

Billy Mcneill is getting a Statue ( deservedly) so everything is rosy in the garden.
Awful defence, shambles in Europe but throw in a couple of ‘ treble ‘ stories and the fans will be purring.

Months ago I made a decision not to give a single penny towards Celtic merchandise or buy match day tickets….I feel vindicated today!

Totally agree, Monti.

The contempt these assholes have for us is incredible.

Patronising Tory bastards the lot of them!

Wise up fellow Celt’s! Spending your hard-earned (and it’s getting harder all the time) money on all the ephemeral tat they EXPECT us to buy is keeping these expensive suits in their jobs.

The statues and all the rest of their doffing of caps to our history is laughable when they are happy to see the team continue to be more and more irrelevant in Europe. Meanwhile, and this is the really shameful part, they give refuge and support to a person like Livingston, whose views about the low-paid are so Dickensian. I wonder if any of them know our history (apparently Bankier is a rugby fan, first and foremost) or understand the meaning of the word IRONY? To then turn around and call the support ‘racist’ and ‘anti-Semitic’ is so offensive as to be a sackable offence. His comments are really going to hurt the bottom-line! Will sponsors want to be associated with the Celtic ‘brand’ after his accusations? Supporters should immediately suspend buying Celtic products until an official apology is given.

Actually, he can piss off with his pal Livingstone.

We don’t need to be represented by people like them.

I’ve not seen the comments that Bankier called ” criminally racist”, so can’t comment on them ; but for him , in his position at the club , to make a PUBLIC statement like that , just days after an article in the msm called us sectarian , is extremely poor judgement and harmful to the club.
You can see the msm jumping all over this with ” even your own chairman says your sectarian “.
NOW , if some numpties have used language that could be deemed “criminally racist ” , when referring to the Lord in question , then they should take that language across the city where it’ll be more appreciated .
HOWEVER , our chairman needs to be smarter , and more mindful of the environment in which we operate , particularly the hostile media , just waiting to pounce on any negativity .
In short , even if he’s got a case ( and I desperately hope he hasn’t) our chairman needs to learn to chose his words more carefully .
What he said comes across as more of an unprofessional “rant” .
That said,if people have been referring to someone ( anyone) with racist or sectarian ( anti-Semitic) language then , I repeat ,they’re at the wrong club.

andybhoy,

the terms “A Club Like No Other” and ” The Celtic Family” ARE accurate descriptions of our Club.
The problem is that the Board don’t get that.
They are running Celtic , and look upon Celtic as just another club or business .
These are high-flyers in their industries ,but just don’t “get” the two phrases used above .
Our support , unlike almost any other football support , have , and always have had ,at it’s core a political and social awareness which is woven into the fabric of Celtic ;
from it’s inception ,for social reasons first and foremost , (the football was secondary in Brother Walfrid’s eyes), through to it’s republican roots, from Michael Davitt’s turf to Eamon De Valera’s flag , to our “Ultras” collecting food for the needy .
This part of Celtic cannot and should not be separated from the football part , they’re all parts of the same whole.
Unfortunately the guys up top don’t get that.
If ever there was evidence of a need for proper fan representation on the Board , this is it.
Until it’s first addressed and then sorted , then we’re just pulling in opposite directions.

Agreed , it’s a “jaw-dropping” accusation to come out with .
I’ve never seen or heard anything that could be construed as “criminally racist” or anti-Semitic , from our fans.
He has to be “tackled” on this .Where and when were these remarks made?
If there’s evidence , then it should have been dealt with in-house. ( Or at least tried to ).
Since he decided to go public with it , then it’ll have to be dealt with there ; but dealt with , nevertheless .
You can’t just throw an accusation like that , and then run .
I don’t know any Celtic fans who would condone that kind of talk.
To blurt it out at the AGM in front of msm enemies of Celtic is another O.G.
Where’s the P.R. thinking on this?
I hope he’s in such good voice come 4th Dec when EBT appeal time is up.

in fairness to andybhoy ,I didn’t take his use of that term as meaning to be Jewish related ; since he aimed the term at the whole board .
I admit I simply took it to relate to their Celtic related business practices , and didn’t link it at all to an anti-Semitic slur.
I think in my posts above , I made quite clear my views on such racial comments ; but yes , I now see that the term Shylock could be offensive to the Jewish community . ( If someone deliberately used a negative stereotype word to describe Irish/Catholics , I’d be “jumping up and down”.)
In short , I take your point , and admit that till you pointed it out , that term would have gone straight over my head without a thought or link to any Religion.

By the time I have read this the AGM is over.

For the boar to walk out of an AGM relatively unscathed while we debate absolutely atrocious football teams such as what you have suggested below is a depressing state of reality.

Of your team – the following are good enough to be paid by the club.

Gordon
Simunovic
Tierney
Brown

The following are only tolerable because of where we are.

Johansen
Rogic
Commons
Griffiths
Armstrong

The following should be nowhere near the club let alone team.

Ambrose
Boyata

The above represents the worst centre half and the 2nd worst centre half to have played for Celtic in more than 30 years.

Id have Rafael Shite in my team every week ahead of these muppets.

After the stupid comments made by Bankier the banker I will not supply this board with another penny until he has gone.
To call Celtic fans anti-Semitic is shocking.
The comments about Livingstone are valid, he voted against the proposal in the Hous of Lords, what do you think Brother Walfrid’s comment would have been.
It is sad that a great club is brought to its Knees by this board
The comments regarding the living wage and the Poverty Alliance is smoke and mirrors.
I have supported Celtic since the fifties, but enough is enough.
There is no management sense regarding the media at this club, from smelly fans to anti-Semitic supporters, says it all.

I totally disagree with the way Ian Livingston voted in the recent vote in
the Lords but have no interest whatsoever in the man’ religion. I was also disappointed in the crack-handed way the subject was handled at today’s AGM by Bankier. However, in my opinion a much bigger problem was created by the re-election of the loathesome Brian Wilson at £25,000 per annum. This is a man whom I heard dismissing the use of food banks and praising Margaret Thatchers’s sale of council housing. A man who will take a directorship in any company who will fill his pockets. He should be nowhere near Celtic Park never mind being a director of Celtic. Between the three of them Brother Walfrid must be birlin’ in his grave.

We laugh at the zombies for refusing to see the men ripping the piss out of them, can we not see ourselves having the piss ripped as well. I gave up my ST in 2012 after 13 yrs because I didn’t agree with the way the club was heading.

Our club is in the control of besuited money worshippers. They think nothing of paying piss poor wages to the staff, hang supporters out to dry in regards police harrassment, and have decimated the playing squad. Now they make accusations of racism to defend an immoral Tory arsehole. They pay lip service to the clubs history and treat supporters like customers, who should be taken for every penny they can get.

These people need reminding it’s our club, they are temporary custodians. A mass walkout at a home game would be a nice message.

Fan ownership is the way forward for Celtic. I’m willing to get involved in making this happen. I’m sure we have some clever people on here who know how to get this going. Let’s get rid of these money worshippers, they are not Celtic, they are not us.

Seems the only people that want to do anything are those on the forums because why didn’t the shareholders create a bigger discussion around the issues we all care about.
From what I read on twitter with the updates they got off pretty lightly and nothing was really achieved….well other than calling us racists….like everyone else I didn’t even know what religion he was because it matters not a jot. I can only conclude he either made it up or it was one or two individuals who do not represent the support, something Bankier should know given he is supposed to be a professional and fan.
For me he has to go, more so than Livingston who has his political beliefs like the rest of us.
