Celtic Diary Thursday October 1: Desmond Shows How Long He’s Been Away

With so many crucial games already this season, each champion’s League qualifier having taken on the title of a “season definer “, it’s no surprise that the media have struggled to come up with a bad news story in time for the Fenerbahce game.

No worries.

Dermot Desmond can always be relied on to get the support, er , talking.

Doo Lally Dermot, still hankering after the money available in the English League, reckons that ;

in 10 years’ time,…… there will be a British Premiership.”

Which is pretty much what he said ten years ago, although at least then he helped to build a team capable of competing in it.

This time round, his words have received massive coverage throughout the world, which i suppose raises awarem=ness of the club, if not actual respect.

Except, showing a remarkable ignorance of company law, he proclaimed that Rangers, who went out of business in 2012, would be in the new league alongside Celtic.

He told sky sports;

We would like to compete in the Holy Grail in England.

“It will bring money into Scotland and rekindle football in Scotland having (Manchester) United, Arsenal and others.

“Maybe it’s going to be 10 years but it’s inevitable.

“Rangers and Celtic are among the top 10 teams in Britain and some of the biggest teams in the world and they should be competing at the highest level.

“It’s inevitable there will be changes.”

One change springs to mind.

Give us a smile as you wave us goodbye, Dermot;

for someone who claims to have the club’s best interest at heart, he’s proved remarkably adept at not giving a toss about what the fans want.

Alarmingly, he implies that the unique fiscal policies of Former rivals Rangers should just be ignored, and the new club allowed to slip unpunished and unnoticed into the slot vacated by the old one when it was liquidated.

Celtic supporters will not, and cannot allow this.

Scottish football supporters cannot and will not allow this.

Desmond doesn’t come to the east end of Glasgow very often. Least of all to watch the football.

Maybe he’d be better off staying away for good if he’s going to come out with nonsense like this.

Somewhat upsettingly, he still holds the reigns of power at Celtic , although that’s what the Kelly’s and the White’s thought as well, so in order to make us feel he’s a little more hands on, he told us he had faith in the manager,-happily remembering his full name-and even named a couple of players in the squad who he felt had improved;

Deila has got two trophies under his belt and I think we can see from the good work he’s done with a lot of the players have come on, In the current squad if you take [Tom] Rogic and [Nir] Bitton have made considerable improvement and a lot of other players have made considerably improvement under Ronny’s guidance.

Dermot, his first name is Ronny.

“So I feel very confident he’ll continue to improve all the teams at Celtic. I’m very confident at Ronny’s future at Celtic. I’m confident the best of Ronny Deila and the best of Celtic is to come,”

Cheers.

Struggled with the first names of the two players , though.

He’ll be away back to the golf, or whatever else he does. Confident in his own mind that he’s reassured the fans, relaxed the manager and impressed the players.

In reality, he’s isolated himself from the fans.

And we all know how that usually ends up.

We were here before him, and we’ll be here when he’s gone.

And the sooner the better.

But, it’s the action on the field that concerns us today, as Turkish side Fenerbahce arrive in town, desperate to kickstart their Europa campaign.

Celtic have never played a Turkish side in European competition before, and  it’s worth having a wee look at Fenerbahce, because noticably none of the media can be arsed doing it.

Oh , hang on. someone wants to say something…

Forget it, Dermot. Even a sock on a stick won’t save you now.

So, Fenerbahce….

Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü (Turkish pronunciation: [feˈnɛrbaht͡ʃe], Fenerbahçe Sports Club), also known as Fenerbahçe andFener, is a professional football team based in IstanbulTurkey, and a branch of the larger Fenerbahçe Sports Club. Founded in 1907 by a group of local men, it is one of the most successful and best supported football team in Turkey,[2][3]having never been relegated to lower divisions, and currently competes in the Süper Lig and the Turkish Cup. It is nicknamed Sarı Kanaryalar (Turkish for “Yellow Canaries”) and plays its home games at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium inKadıköyIstanbul. Fenerbahçe has won 19 Süper Lig trophies, in addition to 6 Turkish Cups, 9 Turkish Super Cups, 8Chancellor Cups and 12 TSYD Cup trophies. In international club football, Fenerbahçe has won one Balkans Cup trophy.

Ah, but what of the General Harington cup, I hear you ask….

The General Harington Cup is considered as the most valuable cup for Turkish multisport club Fenerbahçe at the Fenerbahçe Museum in Istanbul, due to its historic significance and the circumstances in which it was won. At the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire was defeated and its lands were invaded by ItalianFrenchGreek and British troops. On 13 November 1918, British troops entered Istanbul and the invasion became official. During the course of the invasion, British troops arranged football matches with local teams. This is still a common policy conducted by troops in foreign lands, for improving public relations with the local population. Fenerbahçe took part in the tournament and won 41 of 50 games played, losing only 4 games, while 5 games ended with a draw. Fenerbahçe was secretly moving guns to Anatolia from its club building near Kurbağalıdere Creek on the Sea of Marmara coast by small boats. The club’s players were also going to the fronts, fighting against the invading troops, returning to Istanbul to play games and moving more guns and ammunition. The British forces realized this as well, so they raided the club building; but club members got early information about the raid, so the guns and ammunition were moved and hidden in the club members’ houses or warehouses. The invasion forces were not able to find anything, but they stayed in the club building for several days to prevent further action. The commander-in-chief of the British forces in Istanbul was General Charles Harrington, who was quite upset with this progress. He was looking for victory on the pitch as well as the war itself, while Turkish people were fighting all over the country.

The British Army, making friends all over the world, except in the places they go to.

In 2012-13, Fener had an impressive run to the semi finals of the europa League, so maybe Raul Merlies, who commented earlier in the week that the club wants to win the trophy, gave a realistic indicator of how seriously they are taking this game.

During that run, there were more than a few good results…

Group Stage
(Group C)
France Marseille 2–2 0–1
Germany Mönchengladbach 0–3 2–4
Cyprus AEL 2–0 0–1
Round of 32 Belarus BATE 1–0 0–0 1–0
Round of 16 Czech Republic Viktoria Plzeň 1–1 0–1 2–1
Quarter-finals Italy Lazio 2–0 1–1 3–1
Semi-finals Portugal Benfica 1–0 3–1 2–3

The following year there was a win over Red Bull salzburg in the qualifier for the UCL, before a 5-0 aggregate drubbing from Arsenal in the play off.

Then it all went a bit pear shaped…

Fenerbahce lost the appeal against the decision of UEFA to withdraw them from the Champions League due to the 2011 Turkish sports corruption scandal. It has been banned from the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League (after losing to Arsenal) and from all european competitions for the 2014-15 season.

But now they are back. this year, they were dismissed from the UCL by Shakhtor Donetsk, losing 3-0 over the two games. Well one game, really. the other was 0-0.

Dropping into the Europa, they overcame Greek side Atromitis fairly comfortably to make the group stages, where they opened wth a 3-1 home defeat to Molde, much to the delight of bookies throughout Scotland.

What went wrong in that game ?

This is the UEFA.com report on the match;

Fenerbahçe’s all-star squad were stunned in their opening UEFA Europa League Group A game, spirited Norwegian champions Molde coming out on top in Istanbul.

The hosts created some decent chances for Robin van Persie in the first half-hour, but were upstaged on 36 minutes after visiting captain Daniel Hestad was fouled in the box. Tommy Høiland stepped up to send a cool, Panenka-style penalty into the centre of the goal as goalkeeper Fabiano dived to his right.

Nani equalised six minutes later, providing a delicate first-time volley to send Raul Meireles’s lofted ball into the net, but Molde did not despair. Eight minutes into the second half, Høiland sent in a wicked cross from the right and Mohamed Elyounoussi evaded his marker to power the ball past Fabiano.

©AFP/Getty Images

Mohamed Elyounoussi celebrates

Høiland almost put the game to bed on 64 minutes, but his low shot from the right clattered into the post. However, Erling Moe’s side did not have to wait too long for their third, right-back Martin Linnes cutting inside from his flank to fire a long-range drive low into the bottom corner with his left foot. Elyounoussi’s dismissal for a second booking late on took none of the gloss off a startling result.

Stealing the show
All eyes were on former Manchester United aces Nani and Van Persie, but Høiland and Elyounoussi stole their thunder, the Molde attacking duo proving to be mobile as well as physically imposing. Fenerbahçe’s defence seemingly did not know what had hit them.

I’ve done the bit in bold there.

It may well be the reason for the result, as Fener dominated possession and appear to have been caught out by three precise and well worked attacks-known as a “St. Johnstone at Ibrox ” , in Scotland.

a number of fans expect Celtic to roll over the Turks, but that isn’t going to happen. They need a result, possibly even coming to play for the draw.

They have a number of quality players in their line up, robin van Persie notably, and don’t pay any attention to the talk of his rift with the boss. That’s more than likely just mind games.

Even if the Dutchman wants out, he will perform in european games, if only to get himself a ticket elsewhere.

Whe Celtic host any European game, I’m always more confident than not of a result, but this time I have a fear that the defence, especially, is not ready for this one.

Gordon has proved himself, and Lustig and Ambrose can cope, but with no Izaguirre and possibly Dedryck boyata making up the back five, then we could well be watching the game through our fingers.

Scott Brown, Nir Biton and Stefan johansen need to be at their best tonight, and hopefully Stuart Armstrong will return opposite James Forrest on the flanks.

Then the mobility of these two, and that of Leigh Griffiths could upset Fenerbahce’s defence, with the physicality of the midfield runners adding to the discomfort of the Turks.

Or we could just stick Ciftci up front and hope for the best.

Any win would be a fantastic result, and set Celtic up nicely to progress from the group. A draw isn’t good, and would cancel out the effort in Amsterdam.

We’ll not think about a defeat.

Elsewhere, this winter’s panto, yet another episode in the troubled history of new club Second Rangers gets underway as Charles Green’s court case begins.

Which means a spot of bother for the club he bought, saved or whatever else you believe..

JohnJames , who seems to know his stuff, gave us a taste of the fun to come…

There has been no end of speculation, on social media, in regard to Green’s charges. I have consistently pointed out in three previous blogs, that Rangers/RIFC will be liable for the costs of Green’s defence. Rangers will not be able to hedge their costs with an insurer. No insurance policy will indemnify against criminal charges. The writ has been served, RIFC have responded in writing to the clerks at The Court of Session that they will respond to Green’s petition, and in these circumstances I would anticipate no more than a one-day hearing, with a decision on the same day. This hearing will be listed some time next week or the following week (5-9 October or 12-15 October) prior to the preliminary hearing at Glasgow High Court on October 16.

The QC that RIFC will instruct will make the case that Green engaged in an elaborate criminal enterprise, and that the costs of his defence are an annex of this enterprise. This defence will not be compelling. Green’s defence will almost certainly be on Rangers’ dollar.

He went on to add, after listing the costs of senior consel and so on, that…

For those who believe my costs are excessive, I would advise that they don’t include any expert or other witnesses that may be called by Green’s team. The charges extend to 20 pages of narrative. Whyte’s defence runs to 100,000 pages of narrative. There could be in excess of 250 witnesses, Each defendant will be cross examined by QC acting for the other 5 defendants. The Police Scotland case runs to 1,000 prima facie documents. The proceedings are likely to be the most high-profile criminal trial held in Scotland in recent years. My upper estimate of seven years may be ambitious.

Green/Sevco Scotland is accused of conducting a fraudulent initial pubic offering by which £22m was raised. Green/Sevco Scotland is further accused of fraudulently obtaining assets, from the IPO, and from administrators Duff & Phelps, to his/Sevco Scotland’s pecuniary advantage of many millions of pounds. He/Sevco Scotland is charged with acquiring equity capital in RIFC by fraudulent means. He is also charged with engaging in a conspiracy to commit fraudulent acts and transgressions relating to the Companies Act of 2006. Issuing a prospectus, listing assets that were obtained by fraudulent means, is an offence.

Big hands indeed.

He’ll need them to scoop up all that money. Which is probably what he intended to do all along.

Now , a different kind of hero.

A real one, in fact.

Jimmy Johnstone - Faberge Egg - Kerrydale Street

The Celtic wiki gives the full story behind yesterdays picture;

The Honour of the Faberge Egg

A Fabergé egg is a jeweled egg made by the House of Fabergé from 1885 to 1917. Most were miniature eggs that were popular gifts at Easter, and were very expensive and ornate products passed between Royalty, in particular in the old Russia prior to the Bolshevik Revolution).

In 2005, family descendant Sarah Faberge created a limited number of new eggs in aid of former Celtic football player Jimmy Johnstone, who was suffering from motor neurone disease.

“I am not a big football fan, but wanted to do something to help. He was inspirational as a footballer and now he is inspiring people as he battles his illness. People admire him for different reasons now.”

Jinky was immortalised in 19 eggs priced at £10,000 each, with Jinky getting the proceeds of the sales . All the eggs were snapped up.

The Jimmy Johnstone eggs are made from silver, enamel, yellow and black gold and feature the medals of the footballer’s major achievements, the UEFA European Cup, the Scottish league championship, the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. Permission was given by the organisers of these competitions to strike the new medals from the original dies.

There’s a lot more on the page, including press cuttings and more pictures.

It’s here ;

Johnstone Faberge Egg

Today’s opponents are noted for their passion.

They got upset when this happened.

Can anyone remember the details ?

Bampot Souness, as manager of Galatasaray, planted a Galatasaray flag in the Fenerbahce pitch before a derby game. Similar to him planting a kiss on the referee’s masonic ring (oo-er matron) before the Glasgow derby games!

dermot desmond is a dick!! there i said it.

he is only interested in keeping us ticking along, doing just the bare minimum required to win the league. He has no ambition for celtic other than his delusional lets play in england view. As long as he is in charge we will continue to go backwards. the sad thing is though we are stuck with him and he is so out of touch with the fans its actually depressing.

Exactly how I feel about him, I’m sure over the years he has done a lot for Celtic which we are grateful for, however we are complacent and if not going backwards, certainly standing still.

The media will love all this talk of mentioning those cunts along with Celtic, perpetuating the same club shite.

In Dermots time, Celtic have had Lords of the Realm, MPs or former Mps with massive connections in government and industry ( especially homeland security) on the Board.

You still think his main concern is what happens on the pitch?

Interesting slant from Paul on CQN linking the EPL Sky /BT apyments and the rise of foreign based streams and the fall of Kodak/digital photography.

If Dermot was Britsih he would be a Lord by now and make Michelle Mone look like Arthur Scargill on the political spectrum.

My beef with Dermot also includes the fact that he could have weilded his power over the SFA and SPFL more effectively. Not for Celtics direct benefit per se – I actually disagree with that as a plan as it defeats the purpose and would drag down the integrity of Celtic – but to grow the game properly and make the football establishment fairer and stronger. From that, a more marketable game grows and hence his investment also grows…
The EPL is a busted flush sooner, later, whenever. who honestly gives a fuck about that clown show any more? (I live in England btw)

Dermot has the means to shake up the SFA – the root of evil in Scottish Fooball – and has failed to do so. This, more than any other failure, is my irk.

Desmond is an embarrassment. His occasional utterances are not worth the effort of reading or listening to. If he thinks football is like golf, it just proves that his majority shareholding is just a punt (like the shares he once held in Man Utd). He harps on about his promised land coming because that’s his wet dream. If that day ever comes, he can cash in his chips just like he did when the Glazer’s came calling.

And then get back to the golf course.

And to think that way back in 1999, when Fergus was checking out, Celt’s were laughing at the idea of Jim Kerr’s consortium of like-minded fans taking over.

Heaven forbid, people who actually follow the team owing it!

What he didn’t (DD) get , is that there would always have been a much better chance of Celtic being invited to EPL on their own .
The EPL have , and never will have any intention of bringing the “old firm” bandwagon , with all that entails , down south .
The police for one , would never allow it.
Whilst the Manchester riots gave them an insight into that mob ,Celtic enjoy a much healthier reputation down here .
Everything that has unfolded re-Ibrox in the last few years has, and continues to re-afirm their view on that entity.
Whatever chance there was or is of an invite, it was , and is much more possible as a single entity , Celtic on their own.
And that was/is only possible with an extinct rangers/sevco .
Desmond’s “Kodak moment” as CQN are referring to , was 2012 ,when he could have made it impossible for them to enter the leagues ; instead ,he was instrumental in them entering .
He continued to back the OF play , where he could have backed the ” OURSELVES ALONE 😉 ” play.

On the topic of Leigh Griffiths conviction!!!for singing an alleged racist ditty, how can one white Caucasian male racially vilify(look it up)another white Caucasian male when they are of the same race as are most if not all European peoples.this is nothing but another in a litany of sfa injustices inflicted on Celtic aided and abetted by a willing media.i,m not condoning what he did but all he was guilty of was stupidity and we have all been there at least once in our lives.

You are not alone San Miguel. We do not want or need that bile and hatred. Here’s Griffiths acting the daft wee lad and being taken to court for singing a rubbish song whilst 45,000 fans have been doing it from 1888-2012 and from 2012-the present and keep getting away with it.
An Aberdeen fan told me how angry and shamed they were at Pittodrie when they tried to have a minute’s silence for Matt Busby while FOD Mark 1 sang continuously about being knee deep in Fenian blood, etc. Of course, Sir Matt was Catholic.
When I sing for Celtic, I sing for our football club and its traditions: no blood, no hate, no threats. Rich men like Desmond do not take their grandsons to football matches on trains, undergrounds and buses and have to listen to it—for decades in the past and probably decades to come when Sevco come up.
Remember the chants against Lubo? Were the singers ever taken to court? Or against Nakamura?

When it really mattered, DD invested more in Celtic than anybody else. He has never taken a penny out of Celtic and has underwritten every share issue. You are absolutely right in that we were here before him and we will here when he is gone but we are in a much better place because of him.

Sure he’s a tit when he comes over and talks about Celtic and rangers in the same tense : they died and we are alive and well.

However , doesn’t he have a point that technology advances over the next ten years ( perhaps a lot sooner) is a game changer for the EPL who are funded from SKY ?As with the evolution of the Internet , surely there is every likelihood that streaming ( whatever that fucking is) and other technologies will make the current model redundant ?

Enjoy your golf bigD and we’ll give you a shout when we need more money.

Fair point Monti.
I personally think he is happy with the overall governance of the club and although lets us know of his preference regarding Managers etc. He lets us get on with it.

Ralph or one of the guys mentioned about new technology which could allow us to watch Celtic without having to subscribe to SKY etc. I am probably too old to understand it but it certainly seemed feasible. That would surely burst the EPL bubble?

Anyway I’m on the bus going to the game so hope to be celebrating a win before I fall asleep.

I like most of you guys, just wish that our board would shut the fuck up or get behind the club. This Old firm shite really irks the life out of me.

I have never referred to the old firm and never will.

We are so much better on all levels, ask every country we have visited, all over the world about us, you only have to go to Manchester to see what reputation they have and if you think that it a new thing ask the good folk of Sunderland.( I am sure that older diary readers can go even further back than that)

This rant maybe in vain because if I am reading JohnJames correctly, Green has bought and sold something he never owned, which may confirm the long held rumour that Craig Whyte stills owns Ibrokes etc.

Can’t see how the zombies will get out of that one.

Back to DD, he may have invested in Celtic, but this is chicken feed to what he would get if he sold an EPL Celtic, which I have no problems with, it’s just business after all. But while he is the majority share holder he should learn a bit of loyalty. If he wants money sooner he should sue those fuckers for cheating their way to (winning?) league titles and entry to Europe

What a day!! Almost 100% unanimity that we are not part of or reliant on any entity that includes Rangers (IL) or sevco (barely alive). I hate all these references that are made by the media, by ex-players here and abroad and now by the top guy in our own club.
I would much prefer a resurgent Aberdeen (like they were under Alex Ferguson) or Dundee Utd (like they were under Jim McLean, to create a new healthier rivalry than the total hatred and bigotry that the Ibrox club contributed to Scottish football and Scotland’s image.
Any sane, decent person would not want to turn the clock back to the decades before RangersFC imploded and ceased to exist. But our media are not sane, decent people…they long for the myth of an OF to be reborn, so they harp on about “the financial damage” to Scottish football without once considering the benefits to our country’s image abroad. Scottish football now has a chance to rebuild itself, to create a healthier, financially robust sporting model without the sectarian baggage. It won’t happen overnight, but the seeds have been planted and given the right encouragement (and finance) we can consign the scourge of sectarianism in our football to the dustbin where it belongs.
Sevco is in a more precarious state now than its predecessor was in 2012, and the only “Armageddon” that is approaching is one with their name and address on it.
Right, game on in 25 minutes…3-1 Celtic. HH

While any defender in the world can make a mistake, is there any other defender in the world who has you holding your breath when he gets the ball anywhere near his own penalty box?
Recently he seemed to be doing ok heading balls out of our box…but he has shown today that he’s a total liability. I’m sorry, I really don’t like to blame a player for costing us a game…but I think it’s time for a parting of the ways with Efe.
It must have been a kick in the baws for the other players to have Fenernahce on the back foot only for him to head the ball back towards his own goal like a big lassie, then to let the Fenerbahce player nip in in front of him for their second goal…watch Griffiths reaction with Ambrose, he was furious.
If we keep Ambrose, we’re gonna have to put another defender on to mark him.

I actually thought Celtic played well in that first half, two excellent goals and had we went in 2-0 up, that was a win last night.
We will lose in Turkey if we can’t defend basic balls.

Another two points needlessly thrown away.

Thought our substitutes could have been brought on earlier.

With hindsight, could Janko have not started at RB that would have allowed Lustig to partner Boyata?
