Celtic Diary Friday August 28: Onwards and Upwards.

Hooray! Celebrity big Brother is back. Or as it’s now called, Big Brother.

Something to do with Trading Standards.

Jenna Jameson, the ,er, adult movie star made a huge entrance, as opposed to making her entrance huge.

Well, just trying to cheer myself up.

It’s Friday.

The draw for the League Cup was made yesterday, and Celtic will face Raith rovers at Celtic Park in the last sixteen.

There was a huge sigh of relief. at least we didn’t have to face these guys;

Rangers are capable of hitting NINE goals in ONE game

after their storming start to the season, says Rob Kiernan.

So, it’s not just their fans suffering from a refusal to face reality.

The Ibrox side were given their traditional home draw, but as a non seeded side, they must face St. johnstone, a much higher clas of opponent than they have come across during the Warburton era.

There’s another draw taking place today, and Celtic will find out who they will face in the group stages of the Europa League.

You’ll notice that Southampton aren’t in there.

ha ha

Despite spending an incredible £92 million in the last eighteen months or so, they failed to overcome modest Danish opposition in Midtylland, which makes me oddly , and perhaps childishly, cheerful.

Not everyone sees it that way, though.

The big dutch defender has apparently cleared out his twitter account, and the signs are he will be away. If anyone wants him, that is.

Ronny seems resigned to it;

“He’s a top player but Celtic as a team is important. He’s under contract and we want to keep him. He has ambitions to take the next step in his career but it has to be right for everybody if that is to happen.”

If his heart isn’t in it, let him go.

For the right money of course.

Just to clarify. Southampton spent £92 million . It’s not what you spend, it’s how you spend it. And what you do with what you’ve bought.

And one of their better buys wants away…..

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the border.

Despite what the “secret Journalist ” might say. To be fair, coming out with shite like this, I’d keep my identity secret as well.

Celtic in PL just a joke

It all seems to have all gone quiet on the regularly resurrected hot topic of Celtic and Rangers joining the English Premier League. I wonder why? Rangers went into financial meltdown and are still struggling to regain their place in the top flight north of the border. And as Celtic continue to win their domestic league title with embarrassing ease, they still can’t compete with even the mediocre among the European elite.

Witness their timid exit from the Champions League play-off round against Sweden’s Malmo in midweek. Even manager Ronny Deila admitted that they were “frightened and scared” during the 2-0 second-leg defeat and 4-3 loss on aggregate. Bye bye, the CL and its mega-riches … hello, Europa League and its Thursday-Sunday slog.

Forget Rangers for the time being – they are currently irrelevant – but Celtic in the EPL might make Sunderland look half-decent. At least, on relegation, the not-so-bold “Bhoys” could rebuild in our Championship.

Funny, he didn’t mention Southampton or West Ham.

Todays Europa draw throws up a number of interesting possiblities. There won’t be any walk overs, and the support will need to get behind the team in the way they would have had it been the UCL. We’re not ready to make an impact there yet. Why should we worry too much about the players confidence being shattered by teams already capable at that level ?

Surely it’s better to work our way up than try to come back up ?

And at least we can be confident-well, alright, optimistic of participation after christmas.

That’s because the pressure will be off, and the players can continue their learning about European football. The Deila plan involves taking the best young Scots, and infusing them with the best ideas about how to play the game.

It’ll come, we just need to be patient.

There has been talk of spending on marquee type players, and maybe a wee bit of experience would help, but apart from playing in Scotland, which isn’t really sold very well as a league, and the lower wages on offer, there’s also the challenge of getting a player to live in the wild wet west of Scotland.

Under Deila, we may have to take a step backwards, but the signs are, despite one or two setbacks, we are, on the whole, moving forward.

After all, it’s only a few weeks since we saw one of our best away performances against  Qarabag. although we followed it up with one of our worst. The extremes could have been done without, but there is definite improvement on twelve months ago.

The players are fitter, the team is better.

There’s a lot of work still to be done, but if we continue to put in the foundations properly, the structure  will be a lot stronger.

Anyway, whats the alternative ?

It would show an amazing lack of foresight, even ambition, to ditch the policy now.

Now, that might be sen as a somewhat partisan view in a Celtic minded article on a Celtic minded website. Thats because it is, but I like to think i’ve given good reasons to at least make you think about it.

Which is why when it comes to the Daily Record choosing their “blogger of the week, ” and giving him the chance to air his views, they probably won’t pick me.

Though they have picked Jonathan MacFarlane again. Who sees the exit to Malmo as the

key to Rangers’ return to the summit of Scottish football.

The thought of an already dominant domestically Parkhead club being able to bank more than £20 million in Champion’s League revenue would be enough to trouble the sleeping patterns of even the most optimistic Teddy Bear.

It would have put them in an extremely strong position for next season’s inevitable resumption of Old Firm hostilities and left Rangers playing catch-up on a scale that would be difficult to bridge over anything other than the long term.

Gers fans have to be pretty thankful then, that after Malmo, Celtic are now weaker and more vulnerable than at any time in the last decade.

Not as weak as the Gers. They’re beyond the point of resuscitation . But please, do go on.

They have a manager whose chief positive attribute seems to be the ability to talk like a football hipster. He certainly knows how to sell himself and his ‘new ideas’, but looking at his record you have to wonder if he isn’t just a Norwegian Kenny Shiels.

His record is one of consistent failure in big games and from a Rangers perspective; you can only hope he trundles on into next season.

If you don’t count the two trophies last season.

There Ronny Delia will come up against a much stronger test, a man with a magic hat.

Presumably that’s where the transfer kitty is kept.

Last season we got our club back and now it seems like our place in Scottish Football is finally visible on the horizon.

Your place in Scottish football is not only visible on the horizon, it’s as clear as the hand in front of your face. surprised you can’t see it , really. It’s been there for a few years.

Away from all that, and Aston Villa striker Libor Kozak has turned down a move to Celtic, which is a relief. Whilst i’m not advocating over spending on players, we need to move away from buying diddies who have done nothing in the last two years so they can come to Glasgow and do nothing for the next two.

Seriously, get the guy who scouts strikers into the office, and show him this.

Help him fill it in, and send him on his way.

Elsewhere on the site, there’s an excellent article on the French football market, showing that there are players out there, within our budget that could make a difference.

This site has readers all over the world, if any of you have any thoughts on any players in your neck of the woods, let us know.

I’m willing to bet we’d come up with better options than the one’s that are probably on Deila’s desk this morning.

Thats because we are not agents.

Here’s a picture from the past. And it’s another of those what happened next type questions.

So, what happened next ?

Embedded image permalink

And where is this, and why might it be worth putting the picture up in the dressing room for the players ?

“After all, it’s only a few weeks since we saw one of our best away performances against Qarabag.”
The quality of the opposition would suggest that this isn’t much to boast about. Surely we should be setting higher targets for ourselves?

I wonder if Rob of THE Rangers comments will be deemed as being disrespectful to the other teams in the league, for some reason I doubt it. In terms of our Bhoys, we aren’t ready for the CL just yet, if we are honest. Get a decent run and some more experience in the Europa and we could see the benefits next season. Keep the faith. HH.

The Basel stadium. Living in basel I know that the final takes place there this year, otherwise I wouldn’t have had a clue. For the record, Basel failed at the same stage as us against Tel Aviv even though they made it through to the last 16 last year….

I’ve read the comments in the aftermath of our defeat with great interest. Firstly, what’s good to see if the fact that people can state their opinions and have a relatively objective debate about what we should/need to do without getting too much abuse.. There is one very positive thread that comes through – we all want Celtic to succeed it’s just we have different opinions on how this could be achieved!
The points everyone seems to agree on are:
a) Don’t read or view anything from the MSM
b) We’re not at the moment CL quality
c) We need to develop our upcoming youngsters
Removing my green tinted glasses for a moment (which to be honest is a bit of a relief as I don’t actually need glasses and have been bumping into things) there may be potential for us to do some of c to help towards b.
I’m sure I’m not alone in not being the greatest fan of the Europa League but as my boss would say: “Let’s be proactive here people, there’s no point in putting lipstick on a pig, if we don’t circle back proactively, we’ll never go from being good to great without strategic, next generation, scalable, viral rightsizing.”
I don’t have a fucking clue what he means either.
Here’s a thought, how about blooding some of the upcoming lads in the Europa League? Give them some early experience and get them used to some form of European football. OK so we might lose some games that we might previously have won but do we honestly think we’re likely to go all the way through to the final?
We need to keep winning the League to keep playing in Europe at some level, let’s not panic buy players who’ll only use us as a stepping stone to the EPL, but buy with a long term view.
Just a thought

Don’t see what the apathy is with the Europa League, yes it is £15m worse off but the coefficient potential from this is probably greater than what we would get in the CL- where we would get minimal points £22m quid whcih would be spent on dud strikers and we would need to go through tough qualifiers.

We are where we are, the next few signings need to be “bang for the bucks”, that is where our real failing has been . How much do Maribor or Malmo players cost/get paid per week ?

I’ve long held the opinion that the striker position has to be the easiest position to scout. Look at the ratio of goals scored to games played. If its less than 1 in 2 move on. Bollox to all the other attributes. It they have them too, well great, but they have to be goalscorers, otherwise they are glorified midfielders and we already have enough of them thank you very much. Another Henrick would be wonderfull to find, but lets be honest he was a “once in generation find” right now I’d settle for a Dixie Deans or a Willie Wallace.

celtsfan67

Tough group but doable just about. Important not to take these games as some sort of practice for next season in Europe, the coefficient points are vital for future European campaigns. Come on the hoops, let’s get through this together! HH

I read with interest JOHN Kennedy still defending zonal marking even after what he has seen sorry John please oh please just get to Feck your hopeless the fans hate it that’s why the support get nervous when we are under pressure

Hardly just John’s fault. Zonal marking has been costing us goals in Europe since WGS, he was a fan, passed that on to Lennon and now it seems to have stuck with Ronny. Mark a man not a fucking zone, zones dont score goals!!

Ajax again…one of the most unpleasant football experiences of my life at the last game. Got tickets through Ajax friends in my football team and ended up sitting in the same row as one of the nutters from my town. Cue a really pathetic away performance, worse than Malmo, where we did not make a single chance.

We will do better this time. Ajax marquee signing in the summer was Nemanjic Gudelj from AZ. Looks like Johansen, plays like him too. Ajax is refusing to pay big money to bring in players for the same reasons as Celtic. Financially very health, money in the bank, but accepting it needs to build through youth in the current financial state.

Their two up and coming starlets are out on loan after failing to break through last year. Not because other players were better, but because they were rubbish. Lucas Andersen was supposed to replace Erikssen.

Veltman must be the worst central defender in any top European league. And Heitinga beside him…if only we had a bustling, in your face striker – he would fill his boots with those two. And that’s the only weapon Ajax has – Milik, big Polish striker who gets his goals right time, right place

They are back on top of the Dutch league mostly because PSV and Feyenoord got raided by the EPL in the summer and hardly have any players older than 18. It is worth remarking that no-one showed any interest in the Ajax squad. Definitely the weakest team in Pot 1.

Not bad draw now it’s up to you Celtic let’s give the fans a bit off a smile, give us reasonable prices to get a Very good crowd and if you book online, on phone or print your own don’t charge £1-50 for every ticket sold even if all going to same address.
If got 6 tickets going to same address that’s £9 thank you also I take it they will use the season card so why charge, they will say administration but if you go to ticket office they have all the electricity on a member off staff serves you so think that would cost more to run.
Hate this with any company.

Good to see the sun is shining in your world again Ralph. Still bitterly disappointed about the other night but we can only mope in abject misery for so long which gets us all nowhere fast. We have a big game to pick ourselves up for this weekend which gives us little time for soul searching but I seriously hope our board, and management team, will learn from the lessons of the past 2 seasons. At least the scouts visited a different ground in Caley Thistle rather than the default Easter Road or Tannadice. It’s a start!

Ralph

I have arrived pretty late to the table tonight. It is good to read so many taking the same stance as myself (see yesterday’s comment) on what we need to come to accept. Acceptance is seeing it as it is but it is by no means capitulation or resignation. Nor does it mean not being disappointed, depressed and even bloody angry when we give something away rather than lose it. Or we bring something it that should have been left for the cat to play with – outside. But, that has been part of football for every team even in the great days under Stein. The rose garden was not always in full bloom. However, the then gardener knew how and did sort out the wheat from the chaff and got things back on track fairly quickly, like the next game. I personally think Ronny will do the same. He does not have the same, what some might have said was Scottish pitman, aggressiveness of Stein, but he seems to have a stubborn determination to sort things out. We just have to remember Stein was working with world class, Ronny, for the most part, is working with the level not far above the dregs.
The Diary has bee great to read this week. It has journeyed with us through the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the thicks and thins, the dreams and nightmares of the past several days. The great thing is, in the light of a new day, we are still Celtic and move on to the next phase in the story, as you so rightly put it. Great stuff, real journalism even if it is Celtic journalism.

I rest my case as I head off to rest my weary limbs – I stood up today 🙂 Like Ronny, I am improving, very slowly but very surely.

Well said pensionerbhoy. I read the Dreary Reeker before coming to the site…nearly peed myself laughing at the guy McFarlane’s column. The only thing missing was “Once upon a time”. He actually states “..next season’s inevitable resumption of Old Firm hostilities” how arrogant and disrespectful to their opponents in their division… and follows it up with “.. it was also good to see Rangers sticking to their policy of never allowing a player to leave for a domestic title rival”…and that from the same peepul (ex Rangers players and churnalists included) who tried to push, lever, wangle, pressure, oblige Scott Allan to sign for sevco…HYPOCRISY on a breathtaking scale.
Yes we lost the possibility of 20M+, but we will soften that blow with a good run in the Europa and a good price for “jump the Dyke”. I was happy to hear that move for another stinker, from Aston Villa, isn’t gonna happen. Get Finnbogasson or at least someone who has shown he CAN score, not a guy who “might” score. I’d rather we increase our search for young home grown talent instead of paying every badge kisser who just wants to use us as a stepping stone to the EPL. We know it’s happening, so Lawwell and the board must know it too (they surely can’t be THAT stupid?), so why do we persist in wasting good money on has beens and never beens?
I’m glad the anti Ronny sentiment has lessened (at least in the posts today). He must have been as shocked and sickened as us as to how so many players could give so little a week after showing (at least for part of the match) what level of performance they could rise to. Yes I know “he’s the manager, he should know” will be the shout, but I still think there must have been no sign s in the days prior to the match that they were going to under perform so badly or he would’ve done something. Hindsight is a wonderful gift but just as useless as not being able to see the future.
The players owe us, and they owe the manager who has had to take a lot of personal abuse that was caused by their failings, not his.
Anyway, although the hacks are laughing, always remember that he who laughs last…etc. HH and as the iary says..onwards and upwards.

S lot of nostalgia and philosophy driven posts on here . That’s ok I feel like delving back in time to a place where Celtic were a feared team over the continent. Now it’s apparent that that map of what we were doesn’t fit the reality of whatvthe calibre of the team is now malmo are a better team but player for player Celtic probably just come out on top. I think it’s was a case of a canny old fox versus a virtual novice with the respective managers

They sat off the ball with their two nil lead and pressed at the right time and it paid dividends. Celtic were the betterteam for the first fifteen minutes of each game then their minds went walkabout …chaotic disarray

Anyway these games will be good for the club especially for Ronny I think he knows he is naive but he knows it would be disastrous for him to admiti it
Now he can learn and go from a theoretical coach to a real one
Otherwise ale d the money and get a tactical genius like hiddink in though I doubt he would come. He wanted to before evened took MON on

My daft thoughts anyway

Spend the money on hiddink. He did remedial work in Australia and Chelsea. Were a big club and always will be I have some respect for Ronny though a think his biggest failings are not coaching teams to adapt to games when necessary and getting a handle on team discipline ie Messrs johansen Griffiths and brown
