Celtic Diary Saturday August 8: Probably The Most Optimistic Article Ever.

Like everyone else , I watched the draw yesterday. And figured Malmo, perhaps the one club who made the wound that finally killed our old adversaries, would be a difficult opponent, but easy to get to, would not be the easiest of ties.

But really, deep down, who cares ?

We’ve another game to get through, and then the players can relax and get on with it.  And thats, as they say, about the size of it.

Had we drawn a combined eleven from Barcelona, Munich and Madrid  it would have only been because they couldn’t beat us on their own.

(Have you been drinking? -Ed )

Yup.

And know what ?

Looking at the world from the bottom of a glass can sometimes deliver a clarity that isn’t possible with alternative views.

From being perhaps a little sceptical of Ronny Deila

hypocrisy meter

and having had a wee chat with him since

I think he knows what he’s doing.

Regular commentator to the diary Pensionerbhoy has consistently compared Deila to the late ,great Jock Stein and the effect he had on the club. Maybe a little over the top, but you have to respect an experienced opinion.

So, when the draw was made, the initial excitement faded real quick. It doesn’t matter who we have to play.

No. Really.

My chat with Ronny was all about football. I gave him my thoughts on how Celtic were playing, and how they should move forward, and when he’d finished laughing and gesticulating with a hand to the rest of the room, he said how it was going to be, and I have to admit, i bowed to a superior mind.

Pretty much a metaphor  for my domestic life, but you get the point.

Celtic played Qarabag with only one objective. To win.

We’ll play Malmo with the same objective. And we’ll do it.

Then there’s the group stages. Win the home games, pick up just one point away from home, and then it’s the last sixteen.

Sound simple ?

Oh , aye, but with the new kid on the block, it’s actually more achievable than we maybe think.

For all the talk of Virgil van Dijk moving on, or a late bid for Biton, Johansen or even Craig Gordon-he didn’t sign a new contract because Peter got the bank statement through, and had to spend quickly before Hector rang-he was offered it because at one time he was the most expensive goalie in Britain.

Cynical, maybe, because the man doesn’t have any ambition to move on. Celtic took a chance on him, and he’s proved well worth it, And he seems to see it as a two way street.

No, for all the talk about players going, you’ll notice that there’s been no mention of Ronny going. The MSM won’t do that story. He’ll tell them to

gå og knulle deg selv

The players, you see, cannot  do that. Only Johansen can speak Norwegian, and no-ones asked him either

Going back to Craig Gordon,  the last decade or so has shown the goalkeeping scout is worth his weight in gold. If only he knew a thing or two about strikers.

So, when the draw was made, it didn’t really matter.

We’ve a team that knows how to win. We’ve a manager who knows how to win, and although it’s taken a year or so, that team trusts and understands the managers way of doing things.

Watching Ronny post match on Wednesday night you could see the relief, and he said that no matter who we draw, it wouldn’t be as tough a tie as Qarabag.

He altered the natural Celtic style, and he got a result.

Now, that comparison with Stein.

When Celtic faced Zurich back in 66, the players thought that the Swis side would play the second leg, at home, differently. Stein maintained that they wouldn’t. And he was right.

Although he would go on to be one of, if not the , best managers of all time, he was at his peak, in my mind, from hs time at Dunfermline maybe through to the Leeds game.

Ronny may well go on to coach another, bigger club -if he can find one,to paraphrase his own words-but he will make his name at Celtic, in the same way as others have done.

Right.

We are going to win a European trophy.

If not this season, then next season. In fact, we might even lift both in the one go. Look, it’s fine to be a little deluded, but at least we can offer a la little evidence in support of our case.

For some, it really is delusion.

Aye, okay. The Etims Diary just made you laugh out loud again.

and it should maybe come with a warning…

Embedded image permalink

Well, you’d be surprised what one man can achieve when he puts his mind to it.

Ronny will do it.

A fellow I met on the train yesterday also achieved greatness, despite the odds.

Embedded image permalink

and I’m fairly certain Malmo played a part in that story as well.

Right, I’m away to stop my big dog bullying wee Izzy.

Have a good weekend.

On last night`s super duper game at crumbledown if an ex Celtic player missed a penalty against us there would be up roar on the front pages but one of them miss one and it`s a big laugh. St Mirren now know how ” loyal” Thompson is to them. Referee`s “do” us blatantly and now Thompson to my mind blatantly missed a penalty against “servco” just too let them win. And you can bet your boots the the laugh a minute boys (SFA)will let it pass on the grounds of probability that he did not try to miss it. Tell that one to my granny.! Shocking.!!

Totally agree, you can see him deliberately lean back before striking the ball . The guy can’t be trusted and should be dumped in the reserves before being quietly allowed yo leave at the end of the season. If Ian Murray can’t see this ,he should not be a manager.

Usually, a designated penalty taker knows how to take them! That was a pretty shocking pretend penalty. It gives off the same odour as when wee McCall would take his Motherwell teams to Ibrox.

Big Jock wasn’t always a hero. He had to start somewhere, just like Ronny is doing now. Optimism is good for the soul and it prolongs life!
I’m just a wee bit younger and less wise than Pensionerbhoy but I’ll buy into the delusion and I agree with the comparison.

After Liam Brady/Lou Macari/Joe Venglos/John Barnes/Tony Mowbray it is a welcome change. Let’s wait see what happens. As a Ronny sceptic (see the Hypocrisy Meter above)I’m now ready for anything (he said nervously) Off for the meds.

I think it’s a bit harsh to include the good doctor in there; Venglos inherited a mess on the eve of the season starting, and he brought good quality to the side defo Mjallby, Lubo and arguably Viduka, Riseth. Given time he would have won things with us and sometimes he gets an unjustified (imho) bad name.

Well said Gerry.

Dr. Jo’s free-flowing attacking football in the 2nd half of the season was a joy to behold; he simply was given too late a start, and not enough time.

Haven’t seen penalty but the guy’s supposed to be a professional. To be honest I would hope a Tim playing against us wouldn’t do the same thing because of where his loyalties lie, he’s being paid by his club and that should be his only concern. There is no comparison between Ronny and the Big Man. Stein took clubs and turned them into formidable teams in no time at all. Look at the Pars and Hibs. He set the foundations for those clubs to compete at high levels, especially in Europe. Before he laid his magic touch on them they were going nowhere. I saw it happen as I remember those days we’ll.

No doubt in my mind that penalty was a blatant miss.Compliance officer should be brought in and Thomson should be charged with bringing game into disrepute. Why Ian Murray did not pull him off immediately is beyond me.Cheats will get their just deserts from St Mirren fans.

Just been in Glasgow for the first time this year… Got the underground yesterday…, absolutely appalling.. Sectarianism alive and well… Horrible kunts.

Devoy45

There is a comparison between Big Jock and Ronny: they both made the support hopeful of much better things to come. But only time will tell.

To Gerry. OK, OK, I will remove the venerable Doctor Joe from my list above. He needed more time and he did give us Lubo and that memorable victory over the Forces of Darkness. The others had enough time to prove they were duds. They stay on my nightmare list.

Ralph,

There is no comparison to made yet!
Appreciate the optimism though.

Bring on the jags, and hopefully we can play a couple of young/fringe players.

Do you and wee Izzy live by Stoke-on-Yangtze?

we can measure Rony’s true potential by the amount of sly digs/criticisms/sarcastic comments/ and lack of any credit for doing anything right directed at him by the Daily Reeker. Every day that he is still in his job is a thorn in their side. Every day that he shows that the team is moving forward and maturing is a fly in their soup. Every day that he edges us closer to the Champions League and the possibility of the club earning megabucks is just too frightening for them to contemplate. Every day that passes without him getting embroiled in a sex scandal, or a pizza eating scandal, or a running a red light scandal fills them with frustration. Yes, the Daily Reeker’s angry silence is the real indicator that Rony may be in the early days of being the second legendary manager of our club. H.H.

Is it any wonder that us hoops fans dont like the scottish media , one look at todays sun shows where there loyaltys lie. Back page headline celebrating the countries champions possible route to the group stages of champions leage football, the hun runs with the story of ” i owe ronny a doing ” malmo manager out for revenge. And inside various interviews with malmo players about what there gona do to us. ( we heard all that pish from quarabag ) meanwhile beside this headline we have captain fantastic blows away st mirren and a chugathon about warburton who they are now affectionately calling ” warbs” in some papers and his blue charges. They are a joke the bias is unbelievable !

Ps maybe we should start holding up pics of delia smith at games… na that would be as rediculous as the fannys holding up loaves and wearing fucking bread packets on there head!!

Why are we not down knocking on Norwich’s door for Garry Hooper on loan with a view to buy? He has become a bit part player under Alex Neil . Unless I have missed something could we not bring him in now on loan?

Today. The Jags.
Maybe we need to rest some tired legs?
Wednesday away Killie, then at home to Inverness at the weekend. No Europe to worry about until the week after.

Gordon
Janko/Van Dijk/Boyata/Tierney
Bitton/Ambrose
Mackay-Steven/Johansen/Armstrong
Commons alone up front

If we look to wrap it up early then bring on
Scepovich, Bailly, Forrest, maybe Rogic.
Assuming Brown and Griffiths are out with knocks? With Ciftci suspended and Griffiths out, we look pretty thin in the striking department. I think Commons can fit best up front. The goals will have to come from everyone else.
4-1 to the Bhoys.

Devoy45

Job done. Well done Tom Rogic.

It’s worrying how many chances we can create yet don’t kill teams off early.

Their handball claim was ridiculous. Ref got it spot on.

Ralph,
I wouldn’t watch the Sportscene coverage last night as it’ll make your blood boil.
The post highlights discussion centred on the “penalty” not given (fair enough)and intelligence came to the fore as all agreed it was never a pen. Then for some reason they showed two chances for Pogba, one of which was a howler. They never actually even showed or discussed the two Celtic goals in the game?!?!?!?
I’m no expert on how a highlights package should work, but discussion of the salient points should be a no-brainer; how can you omit discussion of the only goals in a game?! Whoever is in charge of that production should be chased from the building this morning.
A St Mirren fan in my work was equally appalled at the BT Sports coverage on Friday; Miller and Boyd in the studio and McCall in co-commentary. Oh dear!
