Celtic Diary Wednesday July 8: New Balance At It Again

More on that later, because we’ve got a new player in.

Maybe we’ve misjudged him….

Celtic finally got their man yesterday after matching the asking price for Nadir Ciftci, which means that the questionable ability and attitude of John guidetti has been replaced. Hopefully not like for like.

It’s hard not to feel for dundee United, who have, apart from the three who moved to Celtic also seen the likes of Johnny Russell, John Daly and Ryan Gauld depart for pastures new recently, and it’s no wonder they think about what sort of team they could have had. However, that’s the nature of the beast, and Celtic fans too, could have the same thoughts when you consider the players now plying their trade elsewhere.

However, Celtic have accepted the financial realities, and have competently replaced the Forsters, Wanyama’s and others who have left.

The Dundee Evening Telegraph summed it up quite well;

And while it will be painful for Arabs to see another of their stars head for Parkhead, the size of the fee should soften the blow.

It’s a huge amount for a player entering the final year of his contract and who’d already indicated he would be leaving.

And he is still facing a lengthy ban if he’s found guilty of biting Dundee’s Jim McAlister in last month’s derby at Tannadice.

The fans seem to realise that and, despite the disappointment of losing another man to Celtic, the initial reaction has been that the size of the fee made it right to do the deal.

Most, though, also want to see a chunk of the cash re-invested in the squad for the coming season.

Otherwise, Celtic will have to widen their scouting net for next summer.

Not many headlines about how Celtic are keeping money in the Scottish game, though….

The Herald reckon we have bullied them…

Dundee United are helpless as Celtic play the big man and lure yet another player away

At least the Record looked at it from the Taysiders point of view;

Ciftci has just one year left on his current contract and the transfer would represent a
tremendous deal for United, who signed the player for free two
years ago.

The possible ban that Ciftci will face may turn out to be a good thing, as it will allow him time to settle and develop a hunger to do well when he gets a chance. it will also give Leigh Griffiths and Stefan Scepovic a desire to keep him out of the team. Interestingly, Deila has never completely ruled out using two strikers from time to time. Remember, he has said that he will use different formations now that the players have mastered one.

The European media was full of reports last night that Celtic have won the race to sign Martin Odegaard for a year.

This is from Sports witness;

There are reports this afternoon Celtic have won the race to sign Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard. The Spanish side are looking to loan out the Norway international for next season in order for the attacking midfielder to get some valuable first team experience.

According to TMW, Celtic have seen off competition from several European clubs to sign the highly talented youngster on loan, although this has yet to be confirmed in the Spanish media. Odegaard only joined Real Madrid in the last transfer window but is obviously yet to play much for the senior team due to the competition for places at the club, although he did makes his senior debut as a substitute for Cristiano Ronaldo against Getafe. Rather than playing for the reserve team in the second tier of Spanish football or being a continual bench warmer, Real Madrid would prefer for the player to head to another club outside Spain to get playing time, and it seems Celtic will be his destination if TMW’s claims are accurate.

This would provide the necessary cover for Stefan Johansen, allowing him a little rest from time to time, and would further enhance the chances of other quality “surplus ” players helping us out for twelve months. In what scientists call a symbiotic relationship, both sides benefit, although it would be better if we could keep them.

There is always the sense that loannees do not help to build a side, and that it keeps our own promising yougsters away from the first team, but the simple fact is that football is a results business, and the pragmatic Deila will be looking to get those results this season, and not in a few years time.

Odegaard is not a Wakaso, or a Berget. He’s a top notch player who Deila has worked with before. If there is an exception to the rule, this is it.

Reaction to Odegaard’s impending arrival has been low key, but we have heard that one former player hasn’t stopped screaming since he was told the news…

The club haven’t commented yet, and it could just be paper talk, but it is an awful lot of papers….

With the start of the new league campaign just a few weeks away, there is no word as to who will raise the champions flag.

There’s only one man in the frame this year, as far as I can see.

A real legend, who gave his all to the club, man and boy.

and yesterday, he handed aover twenty seven years worth of medals…

Hail Cesar! Celtic legend Billy McNeill gifts entire medal collection to the club he served over 27 years

Peter Lawwell, who seemed to be a little over awed himself, said;

“It’s an incredible gesture and an honour to receive them and display them at Celtic Park.

“It’s really a measure of the man, a fantastic Celt and someone who was voted Celtic’s greatest-ever captain.

“He’s just a true great and it’s just a measure of him that he has decided to put his medals here on display at Celtic Park, and we are so grateful for it.

“He’s an inspiration. For me, growing up in the 1960s and 70s, he was the greatest-ever captain, not only in a football sense but in life as well.

“He was an inspiration not only to me but to thousands of our supporters.

“He carried the Celtic values and standards on and off the pitch and he epitomises everything great about Celtic.

“The amount of medals are just incredible.

“It’s a fantastic piece of work and we thank Willie Haughey for his involvement, and we thank Billy and his wife Liz for giving us the honour of displaying the medals here at Celtic Park.”

McNeill will be seeing a statue of himself unveiled at Celtic Park soon, a testament to what he did for the club.

We should be given the chance to thank him in person on August the first.

Some of you may have tried to order a new Celtic top using an online discount code which you may have come across unwittingly on social media. Several orders have been cancelled due to a lack of stock, and instead of taking one on the chin, and milking the free publicity, New Balance have stepped away from the fiasco and simply wiped their hands of it.

However, it appears John Paul Taylor, the supporters liason officer is on the case….

Send me details please Scott to jptaylor@celticfc.co.uk thanks

where New Balance are concerned, marketing seems to be, along with producing quality products, not exactly their strong point. They need to have a look at themselves. so far, it’s not impressive on any level.

I know I may be harping on about this a little, but when these tops cost as much as they do , it’s only fair to ask for quality. At the price they ask, it’s little wonder that fans will try to take advantage of a little bit of discount. And anyway, who are these people the codes were really meant for ?

Why should non Celtic fans get them any cheaper ?

It’s time to have a wee look at this deal, this time with guys representing Celtic who know a bit about sales and marketing.

Meanwhile, the club formerly known as Rangers are back in court. The original Big Tax Case decision is under appeal, and the BBC are spot on again with their reportage;

“The scheme in this case was established in terms that had effect so that, on appointment of the funds to the individual sub-trusts, the sums in question were ‘paid’ to the employee.”

The use of employee benefit trusts relate back to Sir David Murray’s time in charge of the Ibrox club before ownership changed.

The company which owned Rangers was subsequently forced into administration while under Craig Whyte’s control and later went into liquidation.

Funny, you never hear of the company that owned Woolworths having been liquidated, or the company that owned Enron.

Anyway, surely if it was all the company’s fault, then the club has no case to answer ?

Wonder why the barristers aren’t going down that path ?

Then again, with the BBC, it’s not just the football….

Chief Executive of Antony Jenkins has been sacked with immediate effect

Barclays says its chief executive, Antony Jenkins, is to leave the bank

Twitter, of course, has a limited character usage for each “tweet “, so presumably there weren’t  enough left for the Beeb to add “with a boot up his arse “

We’re used to the media talking shite, and it seems to be spreading, but that’s an argument for another day.

After all, it seems the Evening Times have gone off message….

The author got a memo…  and lo, we read that

( Thanks to the clumpany for the graphics )

Rangers have been operating without a scouting team for several years and the problem was repeatedly highlighted by former manager Ally McCoist.

And without money, which is probably more important when signing players.

Phew. That was close !

As the month of July goes on, it gets ever closer to possibly the only celebration based on hatred and exclusion of others…

All that’s missing is the Zionist flag.

Oh, no, there it is.

Which part of this doesn’t deserve a chap on the door from the law ?

Central Park , Cowdenbeath was the venue for Harry Hoods goal in yesterdays picture, which had a few of you fooled, but not all.

Two strikers… name them and any wee stories or memories ….

My dad Dziekanowski (he still owes me my maintenance money) and the Cobra AKA Tommy Coyne. Tommy was a goalscoring machine, no real outstanding memories but I loved him as a striker, especially against the dead Rangers*. Jackie was great (apart from the child support), 4 goals against Partisan Belgrade and taking us through before that donkey Derek Whyte tried to be a footballer instead of hoofing it.

Am I missing something or did Ronnie not say that Odegaard wasn’t ready for first team football yet? Is he just feigning disinterest while secretly desperate to get this boy in? Having never seen him play I can’t comment on his potential contribution to our season should he arrive, but if I was Real Madrid I’d maybe rather he was developed in-country so as to settle him off field ie language, culture etc.
Like any other player Ciftci starts at zero, concerns about his past are now a thing of the past. Let’s see what he does in our jersey and love him/loathe him based solely on that.

I mind my brother in law was doing summer work in C&A in Argyle Street. Im up visiting the house on night and he says “You’ll never guess who was in the shop today”. Without taking a pause I said “tommy Coyne!” and his hun loving chin hit the floor in amazement. i smiled and walked away.

I honestly have no idea what made me say that name as a reply, but to this day he ( and given this, I) still go on about it!

Spookily was also in same brother in laws house when his big durty stop-out but good looking cousin said “Guess who was in jack A’novskys hoose last night”. She grinned like a cheshire cat and said “When i left in the morning a bunch of workmen outside started clapping their hands in applause!”

No wonder Jackie loved that Cotton Club!

ordered 2 away tops from NB with that code and got the email stating they were out of stock.
However they apologised and sent me another 40% off code and said I can use it to but the new top when it comes back into stock.
Not too shabby I thought?

we have plenty of young players at celtic to play in his position we must develop our own players.

Yes welcome ciftci no convinced as he appears to have plenty on field problems whereas Griffiths problems were all off field. If he knuckles down like Griffiths then he could be a great striker for us.

Aye Jackie & Tommy Coyne think that picture was first game of season & a Coyne hat trick in a 3-1 win at Tynecastle.

Tommy always had an eye for a goal and Jackie always had an eye for his hole.

Not sure about Odegaard. We are planning to develop several of our own. – Boyata, Janko, Henderson, o’Connell, etc plus some even younger guys from the development squad. So unless Odegaard can make an immediate contribution then I would question having another ‘development project’ on our hands.

I had a mate at school who’s Dad was in charge of the turnstyles at Celtic Park. A good Celtic family, another one of them worked quite high up in the Celtic Pools. Anyway, this came from my mate’s Dad many many years ago.
He said that Jackie was shagging Big Roy Aitken’s wife and when the bear found out he went to the club and told them it was either him or Jackie. The bear expected them to sell Jackie but instead they showed Big Roy the door.

I need to be quick as it’s my turn to do dinner and I haven’t even been out the back to kill the chicken yet. Leaving his Dracula heritage aside, I am not convinced Ciftci is a worth the money. I mean, what has he really done in terms of outstanding football? I must say I would rather see youngsters brought through than overspend on big maybes like him. I wish I could say I hope I am wrong but I get this feeling in my gut about him Ach, maybe he just bit me. By the way Ralph, was this to make us ponder possibilities or simply an unfortunate choice of phrase?
“……as it will allow him time to settle and develop a hunger to do well when he gets a chance. “
Look out all ye who shall come near!

I must confess to agreeing with you on the media terminology. I would say it was subtle except I know none of them have brains that size. In the old days they had no need to manipulate as they were so busy shagging Ibrox they didn’t even have time for a Woodbine afterwards – probably not a shower either. Nowadays they need to be a bit more circumspect. Oh, I forgot they do not know what that means so you now get the unsubtle subtleness or as the dictionary defines it, BIGOTRY. Not that you see that these days and it is hard to understand the outcry when a wee bit of bunting id hung out to dry on a flegpole or lamp-post or two. I guess it will be accepted a tribute to the fallen even though it an unforggivable insult to Jews everywhere. Never mind, I have no doubt they will catch they bastards that sing songs.

Now, when I started to read the Diary today, I expected a tirade about fitba strips only to find it was quite a trek to get there. You seem to be mellowing in your approach. Perhaps you are convinced there are moves afoot to do justice to those poor souls who have so far been duped. Knowing big business, I hae ma doots. I guess it will be support your local team in strips – literally!!

Ralph, what a call! I suggest we start a campaign now in July, a very suitable month, for the one and only King Billy to hoist a truly honourable flag on August 1st. It would a be a most wonderful gesture and could be used to pay tribute to the Team of Teams. Ach, maybe I am just an ol;d sentimentalist in my fading years. I remember Billy at Our Lady’s High School and it is a bit sad to see him aging. So, let’s give him this honour before he is too old to do it.

Got to go kill that chicken or my auld chicken will kill me. Jackie and Tommy were great to watch. Jackie was an artist with all the hang-ups that go with being one. Tommy was a quiet assassin who should have spent much longer at Parkhead than he did. Great memories of both but no stories off piste – or in Jackie’s case, off pissed.

H H

PS Just seen we have signed Logan Bailly. Have no idea about him though he seems to have done ok at all levels and was much praised during his time at Munchengladbach.

What a fantastically under rated player Tommy Coyne was. He was a shining light in those dark years.

Poorly treated by the club IMHO

Great read again today and covered a host of topics. Now Hannibal Ciftci has arrived I expect our attack to have more bite than before. If he gets the expected big suspension that’ll give Ronny time to get him in shape both mentally and physically, so that he’ll hit the ground running. I expect him to score regularly even in Europe, he only needs good service. Of all the names that were being touted as Celtic targets, I am most pleased about this one being signed….as you can probably tell by the number of times I’ve posted!!
For Me Guidetti was all show, apart from a short period where he scored a few. He was a self promoter who from the outset was just using Celtic for his own aims…and big Virgil, excellent player that he is, has been doing the same. Kissing the badge, but doesn’t give a toss about the fans, loyalty, being in a great club with the possibility of becoming a legend. He just wants MONEY. All that shite about wanting away so as to have more chance of playing for Holland is just that,,shite. If France offered him more money than Holland he’d probably find a French great granny and jump ship on them too.
He was an ignored nobody before we signed him and gave him his chance and almost before the ink had dried on the first good newspaper reviews about him, he was being “vague” about his intentions when asked…always saying he was happy at Celtic “but”…..
For me, being good at football doesn’t excuse you from having the qualities of a good man. Billy McNeill epitomises what I mean and he is the example that so few follow today. Big Virgil will probably get his dream move to Poundland, but it might not necessarily work out for him a he expects.

I reckon one of the main reasons we get the quality players is because we promise them that if the EPL come calling, we’ll let them go (if the price is right).
VVD will go, probably after the qualifiers and he’ll go with my best wishes.
We are were we are – a club who will continue to find raw talent, develop that talent and move it on for a profit.

Absolutely not. They were tweeted or something – I have no idea how all this IT stuff works. Phil Mac Giolla Bhain has a full article about it. I know it must look incredible to you down there that this still goes on in 2015. But be assured I have seen it and watched it for not far off a century and it does not go away no matter the amount of veneer by politicians and the media.

Please don’t think it keeps me awake at night though. I just can’t get off till I have had a final gulp of ETims 🙂

Cheers PB, I’ve checked a few other sites; unfortunately it isn’t a photo shop.

Only last week was a photo here in Australia media of Mark Coffey liberal MP for Indigenous Affairs pictured wearing a confederate flag shirt in Alice Springs at a ‘fancy dress’ he stated he went as ‘one of the Dukes of Hazzard’ Racism is alive and well in Australia.

the pictures are taken from the BBC website and there are quotes from the grand master, so must be real

Thanks for reply PB,( I think my original post went walk about)

To recap: last week in Alice Springs a Liberal minister for Indigenous Affairs ( Mark Coffey ) was pictured wearing a confederate shirt. He said he wore it ‘last week’ at a fancy dress as the Dukes of Hazzard.

Racism is alive N kicking here in Australia, rather disheartening if you care to read up on the plight of asylum seekers/refugees/ Aborigines.
