Celtic Diary Friday June 19: Squad Freshening Begins

Lets start with some words from a man who turns fifty this week. People who are going to turn fifty in 2015 are always worth listening to…

They said I was a ‘gift from God’

but it was the opposite – Celtic was a gift from God to me.

Lubomir Moravcik, the man Hugh Keevins once described as “the unknown Lubomir Moravcik” ( who at the time had 76 caps for Czechoslovakia, despite a few lay offs due to injury )  has been talking to the Evening Times.

Come to think of it, the times hack who wrote this, the unknown Ken McNab, also describes moravcik as ” the unknown “, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here, and accept this as a wee dig at Radio clydes voice of alzheimers.

Anyway, who cares what the writer-or this one, for that matter, says, when Lubo is speaking ?

“I think turning 50 is a magic moment, a special occasion . I will be halfway towards 100.

“I don’t expect to be here for another 50 years but you never know. Maybe!

Perhaps not. but you can guarantee in fifty years time there will be people still talking about him. They say we never truly die until the last person still alive mentions our name, and if that is the case, then Moravcik has a few more years left yet.

“It will be a time to think about nice moments from the past and hope for some good times in the future.

“My favourite time, my most special time, was at Celtic. I spent more than three and a half years there and I couldn’t have asked for more. People appreciated me and, maybe, some fans even loved me. They said I was a ‘gift from God’ but it was the opposite – Celtic was a gift from God to me.

“Celtic is unique. I left the club in 2002 but I haven’t been forgotten. When I am on holiday in Spain, playing golf, the Celtic supporters approach me and ask for a photo or to talk about Celtic. It still amazes me.

Fairly obviously, though, there was a prompt from the interviewer….after all, we can’t have a wander down Nostalgia Lane in all it’s glory without somehow bringing the dead into it.

“I was very lucky to play in an era both Celtic and Rangers were strong and the competition between the two was fierce. It is different now.

“I don’t want this to sound insulting to Scottish football or to Celtic or to any other team but, without Rangers, it has been a little bit boring. Scottish football needs strong competition, Celtic needs to be tested every week.

But that’s to be expected these days. There’s already a t shirt being made with the headline quote on it, and that’s a fitting phrase for one of the clubs great players, who with those words may just have elevated himself to a legend.

Anything else in the papers ? A copy of the Rangers crest, for instance ? Cracked or uncracked ? Bondibrian pointed this out in yesterdays replies, so if you can help, if you spot one of these rare images, let us know.

Maybe they have just missed the point, or maybe they are genuinely so far removed from a section of their readership, but the Record has hit a new low today.

Maybe it’s because they are PR driven. Perhaps the agents of Ikeche anya and Steven Fletcher are trying to get celtic to pay big money for two at best journeyman players.

But . yet again, it all seems a little negative…

Celtic should break the bank to land Ikechi Anya and Steven Fletcher, says Stilian Petrov

Petrov – who spent seven years at Parkhead – believes his old club should push the boat out in their pursuit of the two Scotland team-mates with the pressure on to reach the group stage of Europe’s premier competition.

Or, at least, he believes that he should believe that.

Petrov said;

I read that Anya and Fletcher were potential Celtic targets but that money could be an issue. But a team like Celtic should always have two or three big names, really big stars.

Absolutely. Quite what that has to do with Fletcher and Anya, however…

“Sometimes you need to go and pay a bit more money, bring in more quality and make sure you’re going to get value.

“If you paid £4m for Anya and whatever Fletcher costs then qualifying for the Champions League would virtually pay for that.

Yes, but qualifying for the champions League without wasting over £4m on Fletcher and Anya would mean we would have money to spend on, er, quality players.

“You wouldn’t mind paying a lot of money to have Fletcher as your main striker.

Yes . I would.

“Anya has electric pace and a lot of teams in modern football want that.

Except Watford, who have him and are happy to let him go. Anya is a decent squad player, cover for Izaguirre. That’s all.

“I have watched a lot of Anya and find him a very exciting and lively player. He could make a big difference to Celtic because they haven’t had that type of player for a while now.

“He is a talent who could really lift the quality of the team.

Which team ? Celtic ? because he certainly hasn’t made a great deal of difference to Watford.

“He has made a big impression playing for Scotland since he broke into the national team and you can see how much Gordon Strachan likes him. Gordon said he was surprised no club from the English Premier League had signed Anya and he has seen a lot in football so he must really see something special. I’m on the same page as Gordon.

“If it is correct that Watford are looking for £4m for him then rather than say it’s too much I would go the other way and say that in today’s market it is not a lot of money for a player of his quality.

Or, we could examine the facts, and say it is.

Fletcher’s goalscoring record really speaks for itself.

Well, at least we agree on something….

“If Celtic managed to get him it would be a major signing. He would score goals without a doubt and he’s one the Celtic fans would love.

Three statements there, every  single one of them misses the target in a way only Steven Fletcher himself has proved he can.

“I don’t necessarily agree that a player should drop their wage demands to fit the club.

“If a club sign a player they are bringing him in to score goals, win games and get them into the Champions League.

“Even if they sign Fletcher and pay a lot of money in wages I don’t think his pay packet will be a problem if he scores enough goals to get them into the Champions League.”

Fletcher has no european pedigree in goalscoring. Come to think of it, we can leave out the word “European ” there, it’s not needed to make the same point.

Maybe we’ve been wrong all along.

Perhaps it wasn’t a bias promoting the Murray years of reckless spending.

Perhaps the hacks genuinely believe that spending money is the way to win games. Then again, that would explain why they haven’t a clue when it comes to talking about tactics, motivation,  coaching and sports science.

Fucking idiots.

When Petrov first came to Scotland , it’s said he had trouble with the language. Let’s assume something went missing in the translation during that interview as well.

Teemu Pukki will seal the deal and go to Brondby next week. Celtic will receive around half a million for his services, which will be aded to a similar sum handed to the club in loan fees.

The official website, announcing the move , said;

The striker made 37 appearances in total for the Hoops, scoring nine goals.

We wish him well.

Steven Fletcher scored five for Sunderland last season. Just saying.

Lukasz Zaluska is away as well. After six years of playing second fiddle to probably the best three keepers we’ve had in living memory, he’s decided to move on.

He had a lot of unfair criticism during his time at Celtic, and only really got a run in the side when Fraser Forster was at Newcastle while negotiations went on to secure the big englishman permanently, and he didn’t do too badly.

When you think of Zaluska’s time at Celtic, think of how difficult it is for an outfield player to settle into the side, and think of how hard it is for a keeper to come in, often with little notice, and take charge of a defence.

We wish him well.

Youngsters Paul George and Marcus Fraser have moved on as well. They were unlucky with injuries when it looked like they may have had a chance, and will be served better by dropping down a level at this stage in their careers.

We wish them well.

For those two, and others who will move on this summer, there’s some words from Lubomir moravcik which may offer encouragement;

“As an 18-year-old I was playing in the third tier of Slovakian footballI didn’t know the exact direction I was going to take. There were no guarantees I was going to make a living from professional football. At that stage, life wasn’t clear.

“But I listened to my coaches and worked hard, made sure my left foot became as strong as my right foot. I got a bit of luck, and worked my way up to play for St Etienne, Bastia, Duisburg, Celtic and my country. I’ve realised many, many dreams.

It appears that Stefan Scepovic wants to fight for his place in the team;

“I told the coaches and club that they can count on me. I’m not moving anywhere”

He’s in Belgrade today, doing a Q and A with the Serbia CSC;

There’s an attitude within the club that is going to see us “punching above our weight ” in Europe next season.

Wait and see.

At noon today , the fixture list for next season is released, and at noon on monday, the revised fixture list, for tv, will be released, with alterations on a monthly basis.

Probably best not to rely on it.

It appears that something else you can’t rely on is the caption competition, which somehow disappeared off the page yesterday.

So, here it is again;

Meanwhile, former drug addict and all round heid the ba’ Diego maradona has finally completed his rehab, and is now firmly entrenched in reality.

The Diary may not appear over the weekend. I’m away to Dunoon again in the morning and won’t be back until late sunday.

But then again, who knows ?

I don’t. That’s pretty clear.

Muirton? The stand is too long for Dingwall’s in those days. ‘Bells’ is the giveaway. The guy with the ball was from Starsky and Hutch, or Little Joe from Bonanza!?

Lubo is saying to Henrik: “We were both ‘naebody’ when we first came here— according to MSM.”

I wish Pukki and Zaluska well.Zaluska served us well, Pukki not so well.

Great Diary. Spot on about Fletcher and Anya. Money can’t buy you love and it sure as hell can’t guarantee quality. No use buying less than what we already have.

I think we can almost win into Europe with what we have. Nobody of any proven quality is going to take £5000 a week max when the English divisions can pay three times that. We will have to depend on “unproven” quality. A good scout is worth as much as a great player.
Enjoy Dunoon. Can’t beat a hot fish supper in the howling rain.

Cheers, man.

Every report says that Celtic paid between £300,000 and £350,000 for Lubo. Simply not true. Celtic paid circa £150,000 and I was told that by two of the men who brokered the deal, and who witnessed the actual transfer. Where did the ‘inflated’ sum come from? Celtic were afraid of being mocked further for ‘a biscuit-tin mentality’ that they allowed the larger sum to be leaked.

What a bargain he would have been at any price!

On another note….
Fletcher is value for money they say??
5 weeks of Fletchers wages would have paid for Lubos transfer fee and 10 weeks of Fletchers wages would have paid for Henriks transfer fee…..
Let me get back to you on that one

I can’t believe I’m writing this but… why are you giving the hacks a hard time over the Petrov interview? It’s his words.

I think it’s the old St.Johnstone ground…Muirton.
AS for caption..

“No bad fur a Gypsy…eh..?…Ya shower a Hun bastarts.”

Also wish Zaluska all the best…his timing was unfortunate and he never deserved the criticism he got from certain Celtic men I know.
As for Pukki…
Feel sorry for the wee guy…I think he’s a good player…
not sure we played him the right way…just my opinion.
I wish him well.

“That ones for you John Spencer”

Ah Lubo. What a guy, what a player, imagine if we’d got him when he was 27? The game he had against Juve when he was 34/ 35 – he tore it up – seeing him at 27 and being able to sustain it for 90 minutes? I was at O’Neill’s first game at Celtic park –against West ham – the English team I follow (Celtic no 1 obviously) and I don’t think he knew who Lubo was – he pinged three or four fifty yard passes off either foot and you could tell O Neill had just fallen in love. Love the quote from Henke that after all the time watching him in training and games he still didn’t know if he was left or right footed.

It puts some one like Fletcher in perspective. A horrendous injury record, an average at best scoring record, a huge salary, I can make no case at all for Celtic pursuing him and this one I m filing under “tabloid pish” It’s a very large file that one.

Anya I think has only a year left on his deal, so £4m seems ambitious by Watford. If anything is to happen I d expect it to be in January, on a pre contract if he hasn’t moved on by then. I’ve only seen him in Scotland games, he’s quick alright, we could do with a Didier Agathe type again, but I can’t see it happening.

Agree I thought Pukki had something about him. Unfortunately he always gave the impression he’d just been having a really nice deep sleep when some one woke him up and sent him out on the pitch, if some one can get some fire in his belly I think he is actually a very good player. I think something similar about Derk, so what do I know.

Is that a photoshop of El Pibe with that sign? Great if genuine

Muirton and a bit of useless info, it was the largest playing surface in Scotland back in the day.

Meant to say..
Fletcher..??…Absolutely….
NOT…!!
3 years too late..Not remotely worth it now.
Anya..?? Definitely…
Maybe…
For a lot lot less than £4 mill. ‘though.
Like £3 and a half mill less.

One other point…
Anybody else as “disappointed” as me at the lack of breakthrough from younger players?
We put a lot of money time and effort into the Youth set-up…and I’m not sure we get “value for money”…
Or am I being unfair ?

Yes we always hear about the young lads coming through.

Anyone know what happened to Charlie Grant who seemed to be coming through?

Good stuff gain. As for Lubo and the press, it is all part of a cunning plan. Thankfully, no matter the words from his mouth, we will always know what is in the wee man’s heart.

As for the other tripe from Stilian, let’s just hope he never becomes a scout – not for us anyway. It really boggles my mind trying to work out what these ex players get for slabbering all over the press agendas. I guess we all have a price and therein lies the problem.

Lubo, “That’s how an unknown does it, Keevins. Not that you’ll ever understand that.”

Definitely Muirton Park. The Wheel Inn was fairly well kent in Perth. Visited both many times when I was….ahem! younger. That was around the age Lubo just reached. Can’t remember much before that. Bit like Keevins – only a wee, wee bit.

Alwaqys remember the daily ranger headline about Lubo “Dud Czeck”
And also remember the look on his face the first time he scored against rangers – “what’s the big deal” but then he learned what the big deal was and remember the look on his face when he had destroyed them at ibrox.
A Celtic legend who we never got to enjoy enough.
MON wasn’t happy with him when he first saw him because Lubo didn’t track back – once MON had seen what Lubo could do, he told him he didn’t ever need to track back. Probably the only player MON has managed who was allowed just to do as he wanted.

Has it occured to anyone that a truly creative midfielder of Lubo’s quality may weel be something we still need to compete at a higher level? Don’t get me wrong, I think Johannsen’s a terrific player, but IMHO doesn’t quite have the spark of geniius of a Lubo.

Devoy45

I agree, but easier said than done. Lubo was magic whereas Johansen is very good— but we can keep searching. I think a creative midfielder allows everything else to happen:
McStay/Ki/Nakamura and wingers included like Jinky and Forrest, on his game. Watch Barca to see how that works…or AC Milan at their best.
