Celtic Diary Thursday April 9: Three Points. They All Count.

Celtic won 2-0 against ( insert name of opponents here ) to rack up another three points in the quest for four in a row.

Kris Commons and Stefan Johansen scored the goals.

Do you know what is astonishing about this season ?

Celtic don’t have a single player who is in double figures when it comes to goals scored in the league. Johnsen and Guidetti have eight apiece. Anthony Stokes, for all the grief he gets has seven, the same as Kris Commons.

Mackay Steven and Armstrong are up there as well, but that includes their Dundee United goals.

Hah. Dundee United. As The Clumpany , on twitter, remarked;

Back to the goalscoring “problem “.

We’ve noticed the problem almost on a weekly basis, when we talk of the amount of chances created and the proportion of them scored.

Does Ronny have an answer ?

Does it explain the rotation of strikers lately?

Is he giving them a last chance to do something before he spends on a proven , quality striker ?

Well, I’d thought I’d ask , anyway.

Speaking after last nights game, presumably to keep everyone awake, Deila said he was pleased with ….John Guidetti;

“He worked really hard last night, and he was involved in a lot of our play.

“So I was really happy with him. He performed well.

“I think he understands that it is not just about him scoring, but about what he does for the team.

 “He is talking a lot about assists as well, which is good.”

Er, his job in the team is to score goals. Surely ? We have five midfielders to do the “assisting ”

As it was, again, Celtic had to rely on Craig Gordon a little more than we should have.

 “It is always dangerous when you don’t take your chances.

“You know the opposition is going to get one or two, and Thistle did that, but Craig saved us.

“The opening goal came at the right time, just before half-time, and we went on to take the points we needed.”

 Theres a Champions League campaign just weeks away.

If we haven’t found someone to score goals at that level, we are in trouble.

When he had Henrik Larsson you always felt we’d score, and especially away from home, that was invaluable in Europe. You always have a chance if you have a goalscorer.

 Leigh Griffiths is the closest we have to one, but he isn’t at that level. It’s not to say he can’t get there, but we need someone now.

One player who is excelling in what he does, no matter who the opposition, and who is capable of performing at a higher level, is Stefan Johansen, whose captain’s contribution last night was fantastic.

 Ronny agreed;

Stefan is a good player and he is important for us,’ Deila said. ‘He works very hard and communicates well with his team-mates. He did a great job as captain.

‘He has had a good season all along but is improving all the time. He is very fit and you can see it at the end of the games – he is getting on the end of chances because he is still going when others are starting to get tired. Technically he is improving all the time as well. He can still get better.

‘We have conceded only 14 goals this season and of course a lot of that is down to the defence and goalkeeper. But Stefan is one of the pluses in that as well. He works so hard for the team along with Broony and Nir (Bitton) which makes us very solid. He is a good player offensively and defensively.’

Theres talk of the Norwegian as a candidate for Player of the Year, but this is Scotland, and he has to combine his on field efforts with at the very least discovering a cure for Ebola, saving an airplane full of terrified passengers, and getting Second Rangers a nominated advisor and millions of pounds of investment.

 Ronny thinks he’s in with a chance, along with a few other Celts, but he’ll learn;

 ‘There are many good players at Celtic. The best players in Scotland have been here but it’s up to others to pick the player of the year.

‘He is one of the ones doing very well but there are a lot of them. People can talk about Craig (Gordon), Virgil (van dijk), Jason (Denayer), Broony and Nir. You (the media) have to pick. I just see that a lot of our players have been performing well.’

As ever, the press wanted to know how much we could sell him for…but the manager shot them down;

‘I don’t want to think about it like Stefan being one of our biggest assets in terms of money. I want to think that we have a good player. We want to build the team around players like him – Nir, Jamesy (Forrest) Virgil. We have young players coming up. They can be better and can improve.

‘We just have to keep them here and continue to develop them and fight so hard to get into the European stage.’

Don’t we, Peter ?

 Peter ?

lawwell laughing

Well, we can hope….

News from Ibrox, and despite initial misgivings, we hear there will be significant investment at Second Rangers. Glasgow City council have agreed to buy the site of Ibrox Stadium, and will replace it with a major new sewage works, thus helping the club and greatly reducing air pollution  in the area.

Everybodys happy.

Except Haris Vuckic. He wants to leave Newcastle, and claims he would be happy to stay at Second Rangers if they get promoted, and , of course, stay in business.

 Surely not, even the Rumour mill wouldn’t suggest this…… but he might well be staying in Glasgow, and not over there….

Theres also concern over aging forward Kenny Miller, who seemed to misunderstand manager Stuart McCall when he said that the new club would have to scrap their way out of the first division.

Embedded image permalink

We hear he also got a little mixed up when he asked the lass in the picture where she came from. she said she was Lebanese, and Miller later explained to a pal why he lucked out.

 ” she prefers other women and she’s dyslexic “

I didn’t watch it, but there was a leadership debate in Scotland last night. Better Together hasn’t gone away, has it ?

Hang on, I’ve seen these two before…

 I’ll be in Dunoon on Saturday. Just in case, where do the Dunoon CSC watch the game these days ?

Bertie Auld was pictured in a Birmingham strip yesterday, before he went on to prove that they can come back and do well….

Celtic Collectibles to thank again for this picture.

Who is scoring here, and where ?

What brings you down my neck of the woods ?
The best pub to goto in Dunoon is Sinbad’s, it’s not a Celtic pub but most Celtic fans go there.
Stay clear of Ingram’s.

McClure’s is actually not too bad now and a few Celtic fans go there too, new ownership and not too many sevco fans go there now.
Commercial is again ok, alot of workers go there but more sevco than Celtic but as most pubs in Dunoon you get a mixture of both fans or alot of neutral’s.

Funny, dickhead, that is the same views as UKIP have, is there something you are trying to tell us?

If you bother to read about Ms Sturgeon, you will find out that the memo to which you refer was compiled and leaked by a labour member of the Scottish Office, not that truth or facts matter to folk like you and Farage.

A wee history lesson for you about Thatcher getting into power, it was not on the back of the SNP gaining seats, they had less than in the last general election, it was the general public revolting against the teamsters that were running our trade unions. Look up, winter of discontent, power cuts, vermin infestations due to uncollected rubbish on streets, lowest foreign investment in decades…….etc

Say hi to Craig and Nigel for me!!!

It must say that deadhead67 is the only filth~(the shite he posts) on an otherwise informed and opinionated diary. Please do your research before you spout off son 1979 Lab 44 Seats 38.6% Con 22 Seats 31.4% Lib 3 Seats 9.0% SNP 2 Seats 17.3% so SNP never handed us Thatcher. Belonging to a voting system that is clearly flawed gave us a government that we never wanted. HH

Deadhead in name and with your comments also in self.
You are talking about a time (36 years ago) when labour were a party for the working class, well not any more, times change and so do parties.
Labour sold out to the corporate companies who run the country when Blair became PM and they are almost as right winged as the Tories. You can’t believe a word they say and if you think they still represent the working class then it’s time to pull your head out of the sand and take a look at what is actually going on.
As for what the SNP were back then well I can’t answer that but I can tell you what they are today….they are the only party that wants what is best for Scotland and they are the party that are for the working class and fighting hard.
It’s not the 20th century anymore it’s 2015 and things have changed so much and will continue to change so make sure you take a close look at what’s going on and back the right party.

If and when, we win the league this year, Ronny needs to get on his knees and kiss the hands of Craig Gordon; yet again we dominated play but without the killer touch required of a top striker, we are always going to be vulnerable to the other team having opportunities – and they will.

When you are on the ferry from Gourock to Dunoon there will be an announcement asking you to wind your watch back 30 years, that’s as much as you need to know about Dunoon.

Hey, there maybe f##k all to do in Dunoon but it is a beautiful part of the world.
If you bother your arse and take a short drive around the area you will understand what I am talking about.
Also it’s a great town to bring your kids up…..it’s safe and there is no real bigotry here (apart from a few arseholes).

ewanbhoy, I never said that it was not beautiful, I have spent many an afternoon on the Cowal Golf course and obviously many happy days at the games before they banned outdoors drinking.

I used to juke the fare on the CaleMac ferry when we were kids during the summer holidays. Dunoon used to be a great place

But you have to admit, since the yanks moved on there has been very little investment in the town.

You are right about the town, as a so called holiday destination, it’s badly run and it’s only OAP’s that seem to come here apart from the caravan park which is not too bad, anyway hail hail.

Local knowledge……don’t buy your tickets on the ferry….it’s twice the price.
There is a couple of shops in Greenock / gourock that sell them for half the price, look for the signs and you will see them.

Hello there ‘Ralph’,
Good stuff again, and I almost always do appreciate your articles, but, FFS, lighten up ‘man’, and try some of this…
However…………..
Someone, on one of the Tim sites like this, used to say something like “FC” not “PLC” when he posted. I always felt in total harmony with this, and always will.

So, to post not just ONE, but THREE pics of PL is unforgiveable, even when taking the piss.

I’ve lost sleep, for different reasons, over the last 2 nights, but have no chance of having ANY sleep tonight with that prick (PL’s) image in my napper. Also, if my wee grandson sees that face he’ll think my shiny new lap-top is an FN dart-board.

Shame on you !! 🙂 More shame on PL. By being an FN skinflint, bean-counter he’s guaranteed that we couldn’t progress in Europe recently. Ronny D. may sort it. Ronny Kray would, perhaps, do better.

As the other man coined, “FC not PLC”.

It is easy to open cans of Scottish political worms when you are in the safety of Stockport – that’s a first I bet. Wait till you get to Dunoon. That’s when political history will hit you slap bang in the face as well as many a neolithic monument know there as hooses. Having said that, one of my favourite haunts in days of yore was Hells Glen – no not an ancient Hun stronghold – a lovely run from The Rest ‘n Be Thankful over the hills and along the shore of Holy Loch to Dunoon on the banks of the Clyde estuary. If you are going by car, enjoy the scenery there. It s anything but hellish.

I heard the match on CTV so nothing was pedestrian or foot impression, more a false impression. However, not even the commentators’ excessive optimism, or lying as it better known, can detract from your sharp observations about strikers and the rather-be-without heroics of Craig Gordon. Since I am a man of faith and have had mine firmly rooted in Ronny from day one (I get the feeling you are teetering on the brink of agnosticism), I go along with one of your contentions that he may be simply assessing if one big spend up front is enough or whether there is existing potential lurking somewhere that will suffice as a standby when needed. Well, look what he thinks about Forrest and I struggle to see the wood from the trees there. So, I guess it has to be faith in Ronny.

Thank you for your reply to my comment on The Walfrid Legacy yesterday. The reason I could not open the picture is simple. I am fucking useless at IT (in my case – I’m Thick). Anyway, you affirmed my belief that Bro Walfrid would not restrict his invitation to feed the hungry to the East End of Glasgow when there is obvious need elsewhere. I did actually find out more about the proposed legacy events and your thoughts were confirmed. So thanks for that. Now it is a question of Asda or Lidl – a choice of two evils.

The photo is definitely Big Roy scoring against Hamish and I am wondering if it is the game where he actually threw the ball out straight to a Celtic player who then scored with one touch – I was at the game but whether it was Roy or not I could not be sure. He was quite prone to the hilarious at times was oor Hamish. It is Tannadice. It is down the old bottom left hand corner looking from the tunnel end where I would have been planted for the afternoon. It was not unusual to see it overflowing down there when Celtic played them. It was probably the same when the ….s were there too. But then it looked more like a roadside pile up at an orange walk. Another history lesson, Ralph, and for free.

Enjoy Dunoon whether you are going dunoon the water or through Hells Glen – or are you flying in on your P.J.?
