Celtic Diary Wednesday February 11: Time To Switch Off Sky ?

Tonights game with Partick Thistle is live on Sky TV, meaning that Celtic will be fulfilling their obligations of the contract the broadcasters hold with the SPFL. Of course, we all want to see the action as it happens, and its not always practical for us to attend the game, so its without doubt a welcome addition to the viewing schedule.

The coverage, commentators apart, is of a high standard, and in fact, if you watch it on one of those new smart tvs, its extremely realistic. During the recent League cup semi final, I swore at referee Craig Thompson, and he sent me upstairs to watch the rest of the game.

But despite having all the away games available in the comfort of our own homes, or in the local over a couple of beers, enough is finally enough.

£5.136 billion pounds are going into the EPL coffers as a result of the new deal concluded yesterday. It doesn’t make any sense, unless Murdoch is just spending the money in order to have less profit, and consequently pay less tax. There can be no way they will recoup that money, bearing in mind the record audience for a SKy tv game is only around four million.

But thats up to them. Whats not up to them is if we, as Celtic and Scottish football supporters, continue to pay our monthly subs only to see the cash ploughed into a league which in turn plunders our own of its better  players, which, of course, weakens our own hand when it comes to negotiations. Sky obviously won’t pay good money for two leagues, so far better to run one into the ground, before announcing a plan that will save the weaker one via assimilation. In the real world, its pretty much how a government acts before privatising a nationalised industry. ( See NHS ).

Combine that with piss poor administrators who have zero negoitiating skills, and its little wonder that Celtic would take fifty years to earn what , in this example, Liverpool earn in just one.

The new deal means that each televised game costs Sky £10m. Two games cost them more than what they pay the Scottish league in a year. Which , of course, is why our games get moved around to suit them.

So, Scottish football, is it worth it for Sky ?

More than you’d believe. Over £600m goes into their bank from Scottish subscribers every year.

Is Sky  worth it for Scottish football ?

We get £15m a year for the clubs. And ridiculous kick off times.

So, I think the answer is in the question

There’d be little point in phoning them this afternoon, or this week, to cancel. The time to do that is when the parties sit down to negotiate the next deal. Those who are chosen to represent the game when Sky come to the table must be prepared to walk away if its not right. The money they pay isn’t worth it.

We can hardly say it will affect sponsors, there aren’t any. Which is probably why someone else should do the negotiations. It would, for once, be money well spent if they hired professionals, who are on a commission which improves with the deal they secure.

If Sky baulk at an increased offer, there is always BT. Or even the prospect of setting up a channel devoted to Scottish football. Remember, the trump card is the threat of cancelled subscriptions. No company wants to see a massive drop in customers, but its come to the stage where it has to be done.

I’m going to cancel anyway, theres other ways to catch the game.

And I’m not prepared to pay money to a corporation that is damaging Celtic.

Its that simple.

Back to tonights game, and manager Ronny Deila says that it might be some time before he can call on Mikael Lustig and Kris commons again;

‘Kris has a grade one pulled muscle on the back of his thigh It will take one to two weeks.

‘We think he has a hope that he could reach the Inter game, but we will see.

‘It will be about treatment, training and rest. He is in very good hands here. Everything on the medical side is going the right way, we work in a totally different way than we had done before. I’m very happy that we have that.’

Another Ronny improvement ? Well, it has to be better than how Commons was treated when he cut himself shaving  under the old regime.

commons injury

And Lustig ?

‘It will be a little bit more for him than Kris But you never know with a twisted ankle, it could go quicker or very slow. We have monitor it over the days and weeks to see how it is going.‘It is very unfortunate because he had returned to playing and everything is good with his groin. Now there is another injury.

‘He and Kris are two of our more experienced players, but we are looking forward to the two games against Inter. We have everything to win when we go into them.’

The big Swede does seem to be a little accident prone, and as a result was told to go home and go straight  to bed and rest.

Commons absence and the lack of form shown by Anthony Stokes and James Forrest means that there might yet be a starting slot for the two newcomers Armstrong and Mackay Steven, and there is a little bit of excitement as supporters wait to see how they will slot in. This makes a bit of a change, because usually when a signing is made, we just want to see if he’s any good, and can survive an hour or so without a) making an arse of himself, or b) picking up another of those injuries that caused his original club to sell him in the first place.

Image result for derk boerrigter celtic

We know that these two are capable. We just want to see them do it in the hoops.

 So, don’t be surprised if the line up is;

 Gordon,

 Matthews, Van Dijk, Denaayer, Izaguerre

 Brown Bitton

Johansen Armstrong, Mackay Steven

 Griffiths.

I’d like to see that, because it would be a very mobile side, and difficult for Partick to deal with.

There have been criticisms that Deila is focussing a bit too much on the upcoming Inter game, and he didn’t help himself yesterday.

“We can beat Inter Milan. We have a chance. We are in good shape. We have a very good squad and we look forward to the game.

“Mancini has not been that long in the club, it takes time to adapt and get together.

“You can see that they are not getting 100 per cent out of the players they have at this time.

“The results in the league haven’t been what they expected. The fans weren’t against them but it was quiet.

But still they are a good team. However, we have done it before and we can do it again.”

Look, I know Celtic fans have a tendency to harp on about the 2-1 game, but it was nearly fifty years ago, and its highly unlikely any of the Inter players from that day will be playing.

But , as with talk of the treble, is it so wrong to give the players a target, something to aim for ?

Not necessarily, because the simple truth is, if you don’t have a target to aim at, you won’t hit anything.

But, like most of us, I’d prefer it if he concentrated on one game at a time.

Over at Ibrox, the shennanigans continue, and Barry Ferguson, who phones Keith Jackson every week to offer his thoughts on events, so that the hack can try to make sense of them and put them in the paper, is wondering if he will be allowed into the ground , as he works for the Record, and their staff are all banned .

Never mind that, but surely at some point the chairman of Clyde, where he is somewhat incredibly, the manager, should take him to one side and remind him who he actually does work for.

Oh, and by the way, if the club and company are separate entities, as some would have you believe, why is the word “limited ” abbreviated and included in this picture ?

Embedded image permalink

The loyal and staunch fans of the club have decided that they aren’t going to London after all, after appeals from various “legends “, and no wonder. They didn’t moan about decisions being made in London when the referendum took place, so it would be a tad hypocritical of them to start now. Although we can’t help wondering why bus tycoons the Easdales didn’t jump at the chance of hiring a few buses out to them.

You really wouldn’t employ them as business advisers, as Etims colleague Desi Mond notes, when they can’t spot an opportunity for their own company.

To be honest, theres only one place they should hold their meeting anyway, especially if they want to come out of it in a better state.

But there has been a development on the recent attacks by Lee McCulloch on innocent bystanders. The delicate , ball playing defender has been offered a two match ban for his recent assault on a Raith Rovers player. Nothing for his elbowing of Leigh Griffiths, or stamp on john Guidetti, but then again, they were provoking him by wearing an inflammatory green and white hooped shirt.

Perhaps we should get rid of the powers that be before we start on Sky.

Which is where we came in.

Yesterdays little teaser was a little more difficult than usual, as we published a picture of a vet, and asked you to name the player we thought we had published a picture of. ( You’ll notice that when we make an arse of it, we use the plural, and when its something I’ve done right, the singular personal pronoun.

Incredibly, some of you got it right. We thought it was Alan Sneddon, who famously crossed for Johnny Doyle to head home

Right. Who’s the odd one out, and why ?

If the slot machine in your Local only ever paid out Big when an Englishman with a full wallet played it would you keep firing your money into it?

Course you wouldn’t.

So why keep paying SKY your Subscriptions every year?

I have Never Subscribed to SKY never will.

Only a fucking eejit would that follows Scottish Football.

Spot on. Get rid of Sky until they pay the going rate.

Scottish football has huge support – look at Aberdeen bringing 40k to the cup final last season and the Edinburgh clubs are potentially huge.

Together we have strong bargaining power but can we harness it????

BT in on the EPL deal too. Not sure what the breakdown is though and I would not be surprised that is Sky that makes up the bulk. There is a good article on McGregor of Ross County and his take on all of this. It is time some of our lot took some action re the Hampden corridors as well. I wonder if any questions were asked of Mr. Compliance about the difference between stamping on or elbowing green and white stripes and green and black ones. Maybe it needs to come from the bottom up again i.e. fan power.

Andy Walker’s the only one who THINKS he’s a Celtic Great..

Celtic TV are now streaming serious HD quality video for all games, home and away, now, surely something could be set up there were spfl teams each stream their own games at their own subscription charge with a suitable % going to the spfl.

For clubs unable to afford to necessary equipment to provide such a service, some kind of arrangement could be made by the spfl to lease or rent to buy, even if, for the lower teams, to rent for the season, the dosh still stays in Scotland.

Never had sky and never will, i prefer going tae meet ma pals in the pub and watch the CELTIC their, probably costs me Alot more per year than sky but at least i don’t have tae subsidize the EPL and the majority of tinpot clubs that wouldn’t last 2 minutes if sky didn’t bankroll them, BURNLEY, HULL, LEICESTER ect ect, give me a break… Plus i don’t have tae pay tae listen tae all the bollocks the commentators spout each CELTIC game, i get that free of ma pals..HAIL HAIL, COYBIG

It is time for the SPFL fans to come together on this one and bin the Sky Sports element of their subscriptions unless Sky pay substantially more than what the SPFL get now. Obviously those in the carpeted corridors of Hampden couldn’t negotiate a set of stairs let alone a tv deal so I guess we will have to do it for them. I would recommend an e-petition aimed at Sky. I would also say that we should petition the SPFL to ensure that our games are played only with one broadcaster as I refuse to subscribe to two. Also, living in England I would like Celtic to negotiate their own deal so that I can watch every game on Celtic TV as I would happily forgo my Sky subscription and give it to the club instead, in fact I would prefer it!

Eye opener Ralph ! Sky deal defies logic . Gary Lineker an co cant fill 1hr 10mins with HIGHLIGHTS on a saturday night yet Murdochs men offer 6 squillion pounds for non exclusive rights .Epl advisors made sure Sky couldnt ride their bike for a month ,while spfl didnt even go for a rub OUTSIDE the bra .Yesterdays haze of optimsm evaporating now , PARANOIA …. The spfl surely couldnt be trying to stagnate the scottish game to allow a club that doesnt exist play catch up for 4 or 5 years. Sash before cash ?

So was Rodger Mitchell of the old SPL a visionary then ? Did he not suggest SPLTV or something ?

Personally I would never line Murdoch’s pockets as a point of principle .

Could we not have a similar deal to what they have in Spain – do they not sell the rights collectively but keep a certain % for their own rights ?

The EPL is slowly killing itself , they daya player was paid £100k a week never mind £300k whilst a season ticket at Highbury costs £1,500 a year tells me this is not the people’s game anymore. Let them drown in their own corporate vomit- teams like Hull, Stoke etc will be the first to fall(the old community clubs).

Your Man Utd’s, Chelsea’s, Man City’s etc are souless corporate monsters that are either palythings of the obscenelyuber rich or loaded with debt that will take years to pay.

When will all this madness stop ?

At the risk of rubbing condiments in familiar gashes (no – don’t Google that – Ed) dare I suggest that – even if hell does freeze over and 2nd Rangers crawl their way back out from the stinking cesspit of oblivion they belong in – the chances of the Scottish game ever joining the elite money-spinning club that is modern day top-level professional football, are roughly equivalent to my dead Granny’s version of The Foggy Dew going viral on YouTube?

The Scottish game always has, and always will, be run by a bunch of incompetent fannies – the same cronies who turned a blind eye to decades long corrupt practices by our HUNched-back, cloven-hooved, friends from down Govan way.

So, whilst I agree with Mick67 that what little money there is now should stay in Scotland, surely the only way Celtic can ever realistically compete & surpass those “tinpot” clubs mentioned above, would be for the SPFL to apply to join forces with the Football League – even if it meant Celtic having to compete in the Championship and vie for promotion to the EPL, and the dilution of most other Scottish clubs into the lower English leagues – would that be any worse than the slow, but (IMHO) inevitable disintegration of the Scottish game as we know it, to sub-Scandinavian semi-pro league standards?

I, for one, would be willing to give up the chance of the occasional fleeting (albeit glorious when it happens) win in Europe, for the possibility of seeing what Celtic could do with the kind of money the likes of Liverpool have to play with, but there’s simply no way that can ever happen within the current league structures.

Yeah. I know – we’ve all jabbered to & fro about this same issue until we’re blue in the face (well, maybe excluding our noses?) but perhaps the latest Sky deal is a reason to open that debate again?

As IF said in my first post, surely some arrangement could be made for smaller clubs to rent to buy expensive equipment or to lease just for the season for clubs just stepping up?

The cash generated still goes to the game in Scotland. I’m pretty sure in any other business that would be called, enterprise.

That is of course, as you state HS, when it is contractually (sp) possible.

Ralph

I have never had Sky nor BT nor Uncle Tom Cobbly either though they say the latter does a good commentary. I LISTEN to CTV in between the crackles – sorry, if I am honest they have mostly disappeared over the last couple of years. I guess it may be a generation thing but I honestly rather like listening though I miss the crack with the bhoys in the pub when I was able to travel to Newcastle a few years back. Besides it is less expensive to knock f*** out of the laptop than my super sonic all digi come broadband and widescreen wall TV in my 10’x6‘ tiny living room. And I can not kick that far up the wall nowadays. The commentary on CTV is like listening to the guys next to you on the terraces – oh, forgot it is all pain-in-the-freezing-arse seating now (I have actually experienced it – I‘m not that ancient). However, just like the comrades that stood around me at Parkhead in days of yore, they do talk a whole load of brown stuff sometimes, actually quite a lot. And by that I do not mean they are fans of Broonie. I don’t mind a bit of exaggeration. But there is more than enough of that coming from the mainstream media without Celtic commentators adding to the compost heap. I am also very much in favour of redressing the balance when it comes to “expert” opinions but I do not want the pendulum coming off its hinges the other way. Moreover, I thoroughly enjoy a good sarcy comment or a humorous quip about Scotland’s greatest whistlers and I am not referring here to feathery tweeters but rather to blue tits. So, good on you for that. Nor would I dream of denying any man his opinion of players and performances. But the guys commenting on CTV either have prescriptions for free green tinted spectacles or they receive an almighty injection of the drug, blind Celtic, prior to every match or read the Celtic view from cover to cover 10 times a day. Unfortunately, this means the obvious is overlooked, everyone comes off smelling of roses no matter the performance or result and the picture painted of any game is like a serene Constable masterpiece. I just want the truth. After all, I am a listener. I can not see what is happening so can make no immediate judgements. I rely on honest descriptions of the play and players’ performances. I do not want to be lured into thinking we are in the process of defeating Inter 10-0 when the reality is they are likely to beat us 0-10 (this is not meant to be a forecast so careful how you bet and keep away it from Black). Give it to me straight guys and for f***’s sake grow some privates. Criticism is not one of the deadly sins you know. It is a matter of using it in a positive or negative way. You should be prepared to offer constructive criticism and not just feed your listeners with fabricated, distorted or even misleading platitudes and pleasantries. Oh for the day you actually say a Celtic player is rubbish or the team were useless or, God forbid, we deserved to be beaten. I mean, when you claim James Forrest makes a difference to the team when he is playing, you are in a sense quite correct. Unfortunately, the usual difference is he wont be there after 30 or 40 minutes. For me that means the difference to the rest of the team is waiting for the moment he goes off injured And not every boob by Big Effe is the commentator’s curse as you so often remark. Sometimes the Big Man is simply crap. These are just a couple of examples of your coloured views. There is simply not enough trees in the world to make the paper I would need to cover them all. So, come on. You are no Sky, Bt or BBC, thank God, But please restore my faith in you so that I can begin to believe that what you are describing IS actually happening on the park. Oh, and finally, can you try to remember every fan in the UK and Ireland only has sound? So, please stop going off on personal discussions and dialogues while the game is still being played. I do not want to spend half my time wondering why we were ready to score and the next piece of commentary is telling me Craig Gordon has pulled off another wonder save as though James Forrest had not lost the ball for the umpteenth time and allowed the opposition to break away. Even though I suspect that is what has happened, I need you to tell me as and when it does. I do not want to watch the video at 1am to find out there were ten minutes in between your comments and nearly five other chances missed during that time. I really will finish now with this. I dread to think how high a pitch you guys could reach given your screams at the odd bit of good play these days if you had seen the Lisbon Lions in real life. There would be no glass left in the stadiums – the one exception being the dump in Govan where all the glass has probably been taken out already in case the dignified fans over there find violent uses for it. Or could it be being sold to pay the tax man? I can‘t stand all of this but, I do like you and would never ever sell you out for any of the con men on the mainstream channels.

Aaaahhh! That was good to get aff ma chest. It has been giving me indigestion for about two seasons now. I look forward to a perfectly balanced commentary tonight. My unbiased report will be in tomorrow’s edition. As in many things Celtic these days, I am not holding my breath.

Ralph, I have to say I think the emphasis on what English football is getting for games from Sky and BT is not the right one. When it comes down to it, the reality is it is another area of abject failure by our governing bodies. No this, no that and no the next thing is the sum and substance of their achievements. It is time to turn the heavy artillery on those in charge. Scottish fans have fought successfully to prevent the now infamous Armageddon scenario. Now fans must destroy the beasts that are trying to create it. It is time to focus on Hampden and all things Ogilvie, Regan and Doncaster. A jokes a joke but this one has gone way beyond funny. Until they go and people with the competence to achieve and with the interest of what is best for the Scottish game at heart, we are doomed, doomed, I say!

The quiz has me stumped. I know Tommy came from Dunfermline and the other three Motherwell but you have already dismissed that connection so I am left with zilch. I’ll ask the CTV commentators tonight. I am sure they will come up with a perfectly satisfactory answer. A wee story from my youth about Tommy – well my middle age. Those that remember will recall Tommy had a rather lazy looking gait. He was no slouch but he gave the impression of loping along rather than running. It was a very calm day, a Saturday afternoon and I know that because then all league football was played at 3pm on a Saturday(that ones for you Ralph), and the corner flag was just lying limply against the flag pole. Tommy got the ball and was loping up alongside the jungle in his usual lazy way when this wag next to me shouted, “For fuck’s sake move yersel’, Tommy. The fucking corner flag’s moving faster than ye.” If that was not verbatim it was a perfect translation.

Sorry for the long rant but it has been festering for a long time.
