Celtic Diary Wednesday December 31: Another Year Over…

Good news today-John guidetti has signed a contract , worth £30,000 a week to him. All we need now is for someone at the club to sign it as well.

That appears to be the problem. The Swede has decided how much money he wants, and yet again it seems that the battery on Peter Lawwells phone has gone dead.

Its not going to happen. Keep your eye on Ivan Santini. The Croatian striker has scored 47 goals in 21 games  ( it might be the other way round ) for Kortrijk, his Belguim club , but he fancies a move to a club thats easier to spell.

St. anthony on twitter seems to have got wind of another potential signing, albeit on loan.

Embedded image permalink

Well, now that we’ve missed out on Lewis MacLoed , the support will demand we go for someone of at least equal ability, so maybe theres something in it….

Anyway, Ronny Deila isn’t so concerned about signing new players. He’d be happy enough just to keep the ones we’ve got;

“Our main goal is to keep our best players. It’s about consistency.

“You always know what you have but you never know what you could get.

“I’m quite sure we’re going to keep all the players we want to keep.

“That’s what Peter Lawwell wants, that’s what the board and me and the whole club want.

“That’s why I can’t see anything happening.”

 He means Virgil van Dijk;

“He is settled more, training well, playing well and happy.

“Here he also knows there are going to be big games and he can fight for a lot of trophies. He is looking more to summer now than January.”

 Until the phone goes….

 Kris Commons is another who many think will be away, and Deila was asked if he wanted to keep him;

“Yes.

“We want to keep the best players. He has a contract until the end of the season and we want to keep the players who have quality.”

I wonder….

Come with me for a moment….I’m not going far. Just back to July 2012, and the words of a chap called Christian Wulff, who knows Norwegian football.

Instead, Strømsgodset needed to be Moneyball. Today, there is hardly a more successful proponent in European football of the already overused term used to describe a the methods of a club with limited resources but with an excellent scouting set-up and an above-average common sense approach to transfer fees and wage demands.

My favourite stat about Strømsgodset this year is that of the 20 outfield players representing them this season only two are between the age of 23 and 32. One of them, 29 year old Lars Iver Strand had been frozen out by Andresen at Vålerenga, getting only two appearances since in the last two seasons. Deila has allowed him the space and time to blossom up again at Strømsgodset, Strand now coming close to the potential that lead him to be capped for Norway seven years ago.

It is the way Deila has managed to blend and develop this group of youngsters, veterans and undervalued talent such as Strand into an almost irresistible force of aggressive, offensive football that makes him the most unique coach in the Norwegian league since Nils Arne Eggen. A group with an unshakable confidence in its combined strength, but also with a grounded humility and the knowledge that they need to perform at a level higher than just the sum of their parts.

Strømsgodset’s season is also a shining example of the value of stability and long-term values. While league positions of 11th, 12th, 7th and 8th the last four seasons have been impressive in terms of the players and financial strength the club have, nothing had really prepared Norwegian football for how spectacularly tings would come together for Strømsgodset this year. It seems it has all been  leading up to this. Where they to hold on and win their first league title in 42 years, it would be the most sensational achievement in Norwegian football since Moss won the league as a promoted team in 1987. Their coach that year was, of course, Nils Arne Eggen.

He would leave the club after that season to begin his now legendary transformation of Rosenborg from a decent Norwegian club side to Champions League stalwart. If Deila leads Strømsgodset to the league title this year, his next move would be just as eagerly anticipated. He has a very long way to go in order to equal Eggen’s achievements and his contribution to Norwegian football. But Ronny Deila is taking some very determined steps in that exact direction.

Looking to the past can help us predict the future.

Deila doesn’t want to buy any big names, its not what he does.

But he has proven that he can mold together a squad that will over achieve.

2015 sees Celtic aiming for four trophies, a position we’ve not been in for a while. He might be the man to deliver.

See that machine in the picture above ?

Lets see if it can go in the other direction….

We won’t get out of the vehicle,  but we can look out of the window.

John Guidetti didn’t hang around, he went to Southampton. Ikeche Anya came in, and he was a revelation out left. He was the main reason we made the last four in the Europa League, proving an outball for a beleagured defence. Leigh Grifiths and Stefan Scepovic stepped up to the plate, and finished the season as a partnership.

Virgil van Dijk enjoyed the ride, but he’s going now, and the summer will be spent looking for a replacement.

Still, the domestic treble, which turned out a little easier than we thought after Derek MacInnes was lured to take over at Third Rangers, more than made up for it. It was close-quite exciting at times, and the cup final was a belter, as Celtic won a seven goal thriller by the odd goal in the Hampden sunshine.

There was a seven goal thriller in the League Cup semi final as well, but this time all seven came for the hoops.

In fact, it looks like this summer will see an awful lot of contented hoops fans who will be wondering what all the fuss was about….

And back in the room….

See, it turned out nice again.

And we’ll start tomorrow with a 7-0 thrashing of Partick……

The game is live on Sky for anyone still awake then, and I’m telling you, sooner or later its going to happen.

Etims accepts no responsibilty for anyone taking any notice of this fucking idiot when he does predictions. Seriously, he hasn’t got a clue. Come to think of it, that applies to anything he says. In fact, we wouldn’t even ask him what time it is.

Right, things to do, people to see, places to go.

Thanks for reading this shite throughout the year, I’ve enjoyed doing it, I’ve enjoyed the comments and criticisms, but mostly the laughs.

Thats what its all about. Thought provoking intelligent discussion , with a hint of passion and humour.

Whatever you wish for in 2015 , I hope you get it.

Happy New Year. Enjoy the daily read even if you can be a moaning git at times. Believe that the manager needs time to settle and get his own players in – but the fact that Efe is still getting a game worries the shit out of me. hope its a great new year for the Hoops

I would say a big thank you to all at ETims. I live a very hectic lifestyle between family and work commitments but afford myself a break at some point in the day to read the diary. I don’t always agree with it but it does ALWAYS leave me with a smile of a chuckle that keeps me going for another 24 hours.
Keep up the good work and hoping for a treble of Trophies and a third Rangers in 2015.

Here’s one for the purists.
A tale of 2 Celtic Managers.
Billy McNeill, ” I bring players to Celtic who have a feeling for our club.If they don’t,I make them quickly understand what our club is all about,so they can develop a feeling for Celtic ”

Ronny Deila,” There are many good young players at Manchester City, who need developed. We can bring these players on,here at Celtic,in order to have them ready for the Manchester City first team. ”

Discuss……

The year is almost over and we’ve seen some big changes, Etims has become much more professional with a diary almost every day and it isn’t riddled with spelling mistakes, hope the spellchecker at Etims Mansions isn’t on commission. Under the line has become more unprofessional and the Etims swearbox, set to feature on Dragons Den, will generate more money than a former rangers manager gardening.

2014 has seen me being first to get a quiz question correct, won’t say how many days off work I had to take to make sure I was in there first and actually get one right. The whinging also changed focus as it shifted from Peter Lawwell, for not spending money, to Ronny Deila for, well, for being Ronny, or ‘the human sheild’ as Lawwell has taken to calling him.

It wasn’t such a good year for our unfortunate friends across the city as they found out that what we said two years ago about the folk running them (or should that be ruining them?) turned out to be true. French chateaux all round. There are still ones out there that think some nice millionaires will be happy to throw their money at them, it must be true, it was in the record.

Predictions for 2015, more debate about Ronny and how many should play up front, a huge tie in Europe to look forward to (seen the friendly against PSG last night and Inter looked far better than anyone we’ve played since Barca) and plenty more laughing at rangers as BDO move from analysis to action and some nice men from the South African Revenue Service ask for word with dave king.

Hope you all have a happy and healthy new year.

Some New Year Stats for the Deila Haters:
So far we have played 21 Domestic Games.
We have created 356 Chances in those Games.
Which works out at an Average of 16.95 per game
or a chance every 5.3 minutes of every 90 minutes so far.

Of those 356 Chances created (with Deilas System)
153 were on Target ie in the frame of the goals.
Of those 47 were converted

We have scored 6 goals from 159 Corners.

You see the problem is not the System the System is working it’s purely down to the quality of finishing.
Once that picks up there is no problem.

Think what you want folks the facts speak for themselves.
When those entrusted to finish do their jobs to a higher standard we will gub teams it’s that simple.

Give the Manager the time and backing he needs folks that’s the least we as a Support can do.

HH to a Happy and hopefully prosperous New Year.

Even you Deadhead/Sutton 😉

I agree we are a Buy to Sell outfit now the days of Building sides are sadly behind us for the near future.
This was the issue Lenny had i think and had those who Control these things (not just Lawwell the Board and Investors too) have undone all that was positive since he came in.
He brought thunder, the passion and the Belief they gradually stripped that back as player after player was punted for pure financial gain.

Had Rangers not imploded I personally don’t think the “zero debt ” Mantra peddeled by PL would have had quite the same ring to it.

All they/he needed was a big enough distraction to pull it off.
Now here we are not quite at square one because Lenny did leave a decent nucleus for Deila to build off but build we must do.

Our biggest signing since O’Neil has been Scott Brown.
$4.5m 7 years ago.

I believe we should Invest in Armstrong like we did Brown and the same with Ciftci I just hope now those with the key to the padlock of the Biscuit tin feel the same way too because the approach is now having serious negative results on and off the Park.

A balance has to be reached and I don’t mean a Final Balance in a rather Large Account.

Let’s hope for once we as Fans get what we deserve and not just what we are given Holy.

It is currently a fact that by the time Celtic play Kilmarnock away we could possibly be 5 points behind them in the league. How confident will we be against Killie away? Obviously I hope this won’t be the case in the end, but we shouldn’t be in this situation  Aberdeen, Dun Utd are no much better than they were last season – we’ve got worse.I dunno what it’s gony take for some people to admit there’s no masterplan, just pish. Getting beat off zombies (anything less than a comprehensive defeat will be moral victory for them and laptop loyal / MSM)? Losing the league and fucking up the 10 in a row run? We’re sleepwalking into potential nightmare scenarios here and we need to wake up.By the time we come back from our winter break it could be more tgan double that. Or is it okay for us to rely then our rivals cutting each others throats? Is that the Celtic way? Is it anywhere near good enough? This is not hitting the panic button – some of us have been saying it for months.  Was prepared to give him a chance at first to prove us wrong but time has went on and no evidence if progresd – none.PS Keep your statistics, this ain’t moneyball – we can all see it’s utter dross, no progress. Even Fabio Cappello has been moved to comment and he’s correct. I suppose he has an agenda against Ronnie too?

Happy New Year to all! Interesting article about Delias days that that footballing powerhouse Norway! He “overachievedl” there and I would say he is underachieving here. The job is different. I wonder if he has worked that out yet. We are now second in the league and just two points in front of third place starting 2015. Anyway thanks for great reads and divergent views. All the best to all. I’m pretty sure this squad of players will be good enough to win the SPL and I truly hope the Huns die and the jelly and ice cream can be consumed oh and some prison sentences for Minty Moonbeams and co.

Have had a rough December but nearly back on my feet again. Just wanted to wish everyone a belated happy Christmas and New Year.

Thanks to you, Desi and ma pal Hector for another year to remember. Etims has been one of the few glimpses of daylight in a rather dark December. I am getting really worried I have Forrest genes somewhere in my DNA (not sure if that is scientifically possible but you know what I mean) and developing an over-fondness for the treatment table.

I do hope this sees me contributing a bit more than of late. Looking forward to another laugh-a-minute 2015.
