Celtic Diary Monday December 8: Diary Achieves A First

The Diary has set the standard now. Oh yes, on Saturday we achieved a first in the world f internet bampots, becoming the only site/article to ever predict a Ronny Deila line up.

The 1-0 win over Motherwell was overshadowed by the celebrations as we finally saw that our new manager can be second guessed.

Lets be honest, thats all it was, a guess.

The game itself saw some good football, some excellent movement, with the ball this time, and a clinical piece of finishing from Anthony Stokes after Stefan Johansen whipped the ball away after a slack back pass.

Supporters everwhere sat back and waited for the deluge. And waited.

Celtic should have been out of sight in the first twenty minutes, and I was looking for one of those betting sites where you can lob money on during a game. James Forrest and John Guidetti both shaved the wrong side of the post, Guidetti had an overhead kick ruled out ofr offside when replays showed he wasn’t, and so on….

Actually, the two one on one misses that shaved the post made me wonder oif they hadn’t been told on the training field to aim for the far post, instead of simply putting it past the keeper high and hard where he can’t reach it. A small difference, but I found myself remembering the Roberto Baggio penalties that always hit the post and went in. Because that was what he was trying to do.

Forwards need to be allowed to do what they think is right, not what the coach suggests. Perhaps the recent low conversion of chances to goals is down to overcoaching..but then again I might be talking shite.

Thats happened before.

Well, perhaps theres something in it. After all, Deila has his system, and the players must stick to it. Perhaps he sticks with Stokes because he does what he’s told, for the same reason Kris Commons is on the fringes as he is more of an impulsive player.

It could also explain why Aleksandr Tonev is picked ahead of Leigh Griffiths.

And could also explain why its the middle of October since we scored more than two in a league game.

Deila knows theres a problem, but is confident he can deal with it;

“The positive is that we are creating chances but of course we need to be more effective than we are now I think the first 20 minutes was brilliant. They created chances and they pressed well when they didn’t have the ball. We got forward well and had good penetration runs and I want to see more of that from the players.

“If they can do that for 90 minutes then we are talking about a team playing at the top level and we’re going to be a hard team to beat. I was satisfied with that and the fact they created a lot of chances but we should have scored much more goals than we did. When you don’t score then they can still get something and it was lucky for us that they didn’t score.

“The nervousness in the last ten minutes was because we didn’t finish the game well and didn’t score the goals. We can’t have 12 chances in every game. We need to score more goals and that’s about practice and skills. It’s also about getting confidence.

“We are winning games, which is positive. We have a good mood in the group, it’s a good atmosphere. We’re working every day to improve and I see signs every day that we’re getting somewhere but we are not there yet, it’s a lot of work still.”

Anyway, looking at the big picture, Celtic are still clear at the top of the league, and although there is a dead rubber game against Zagreb in the week, the schedule now shifts primarily to the Premier League, and the quest for four in a row. continuing with the recent run of league results could well all but seal the title between now and the Europa restart, and that could mean that Ronny will be able to fully concentrate on European glory.

Am I getting ahead of myself here ?

Probably, but although he’s not had his problems and criticisms to seek, there isn’t a single supporter amongst us who would not have been happy with top of the league,  still in both cups domestically, and last 32 in the Europa, even had we got into the UCL groups.

Remember, no matter who we face in Europe, the odds are they won’t really fancy a full Celtic Park. No matter how much they talk about it, and how many of them have added it to their bucket list.

Celtic will also have the advantage of being able to rest players for league games, because by then we should be way out on front.

Opponents may still be battling for UCL places, and treat the Europa as second best.

We won’t.

Next month sees the transfer shuffle start all over again. Beram Kayal, not surprisingly has told a “source ” he wants out.

“I want to leave Celtic during the transfer window,” Kayal allegedly said. “I feel my time is up and it would be better to go in January rather than hang on until the end of the season.”

He won’t be the only one. The squad is far too big. too many players won’t feature unless the bus crashes on the way to a game, and its kinder to let them continue elsewhere. That, of course would also free up space for genuine challengers for a place, and the loan system, which I heavily criticised at the start of the season, might well have worked out this time round, and when some are sent back, others could come in.

Berget, Wakaso, Tonev-although he is a Deila favourite- none of them have set the heather alight. Denaayer and Guidetti , though, have worked out. although I am probably alone when I say I prefer Ambrose at the back to the Man City loannee, probably because of his greater experience, even if it is in getting things wrong. If we are going to blood a youngster, it should be one of our own.

Guideti has been the gold in the bottom of the pan. I’d happily bring in five or six loannees if we can get one like him with an option to buy every window.

Theres no certainty he will sign permanently, but if he doesn’t, at least we tried. Although he’d be a fool not to. And thats without the green tinted glasses on.

His career to date has been stop start at best, and he has a chance to progress now, and make a name for himself. I can think of another Swede who would claim thats what he did.

Ronny gave us his thoughts…

“We talk together a lot, John and me,  Hopefully, we can are going to get an agreement. But, it’s not easy, with players and agents.

“I think it would be a good choice for him and I think he wants it. But, there are many people (involved) in a decision like that.”

you might have heard that Guidetti was in the Netherlands at the weekend, He was, his pal Kristoff Peterson plays for Utrecht, and he went to see them play Heracles. The two grew up together, and spent a lot of time together when Peterson was at Liverpool, and Guidetti in Manchester.

It may be that agents are telling him to go for the money, in case he gets injured again. After all, they are in it for the money, and they will always advise a client to seize the moment and take whats on offer. Its rare an agent would have the players on field career as a priority. Or his future in the game.

Dundee Utd midfielder Stuart Armstrong is also likely to be the subject of a bid, but don’t be surprised if we seal the deal by offering to loan him back for the remainder of the season.

Martin Odegaard looks set to join Arsenal, according to the Daily Express, so expect him here in January as well. Deila prefers Scandinavian players, or at least, he admires their discipline and professionalism. and he knows the lad, which should count for a lot when Odegaard and his parents choose his destination for the next few years.

Someone loves us, though, and wants to come here…

Firstly, it’s a great feeling to be linked with Celtic because everyone wants to be in the top clubs in the world, and sure I will be successful there if I am signed,” said  Olarenwaju Kayode to SL10.ng.

”Celtic is a big and fantastic club, and my brother Efe Ambrose is there. Everything about this club is right for my career.”
In case you had forgotten, he’s the nigerian striker we mentioned at the weekend.
The scandalous behaviour of Celtic supporters at the recent Scottish Cup game at Tynecastle continues to make the news. It started with an article in yesterdays Sunday Post, that most Scottish of papers, which I believe these days even employs catholics, but probably not too many.

Sick yobs daubed Tynecastle with graffiti mocking the memory of the Ibrox disaster dead.

The Sunday Post has obtained shocking photographs which show the carnage inside Hearts’ ground following last Sunday’s match, which was marred by ugly scenes.

The revelations come as a war of words rages between Hearts owner Ann Budge and Celtic over the fixture.

Our explosive images from inside the ground’s Roseburn stand – where Celtic fans watched the match – show toilets and doors daubed with sick tags including “66 dead huns”.

It is a direct reference mocking the number of fans who died in the 1971 Ibrox disaster.

Last night those who lost loved-ones in the tragedy, said the minority of “despicable” fans ought to be ashamed.

Craig Smith, 48, from Livingston, West Lothian, who lost his dad George in the tragedy, said: “It is despicable that people find the deaths of 66 football fans funny.

“Immature, uneducated idiots is really the only way to describe them. Each of those 66 have become a missing part of someone’s life since 1971.

“Those who wrote it should be ashamed and put themselves in the shoes of those who lost someone.”

The graffiti is believed to have been daubed on the walls by a gang known as the Style Mile Vandals (SMV).

A small faction of so called “ultras”, the SMV was formed in 2011, and is believed to have a membership overlap with the Green Brigade.

The Green Brigade has previously caused outrage with sectarian singing and controversial banners.

Last night Mark Dingwall, editor of Rangers fansite followfollow.com, said tarnishing Tynecastle with the Ibrox disaster slur marked a new low for Scottish football.

He said: “I am horrified anybody would mock the Ibrox disaster or any other tragedy connected with football.”

The ugly scenes at last week’s Scottish Cup tie, which Celtic won 4-0, sparked a fierce war of words between the rival clubs.

Hearts owner Ann Budge said she was “appalled” at the level of vandalism visited on the Edinburgh ground.

Celtic immediately hit back with its own list of accusations, claiming missiles had been thrown at Celtic supporters and sectarian abuse directed at staff and players.

Dave Scott, who is campaign manager at anti-sectarianism campaign group Nil by Mouth, said: “This graffiti is both moronic and deeply offensive and I’m sure all real football fans would be appalled.

A spokesman for Hearts refused to comment. A Celtic spokesman said: “These people are not Celtic supporters.”

Dingwall didn’t make it clear, but I think he was referring to the 1971 Ibrox disaster, and not any of those which preceded it.

Of course, any graffiti which mocks those who lost their lives in any accident such as this is pathetic, and should be condemned.

But then, the Rangers supporters Trust issued a statement…

The RST has tonight released the following statement:
The Rangers Supporters Trust is disgusted to learn that a group of Celtic fans daubed offensive, sectarian graffiti, mocking the Ibrox disaster, on the walls of Tynecastle stadium during a recent visit there.

We are even more disgusted by the attitude of Celtic Football Club towards this incident, which is to try to distance themselves from the behaviour of their fans rather than taking responsibility for it.

We welcome Ann Budge’s recent statement and fully support her attempts to highlight the disgraceful behaviour of a sizeable minority of the Celtic support.

The group responsible for this are affiliated with The Green Brigade, who have been encouraged and tolerated by Celtic Football Club officials. This despite outward shows of support for the IRA and various offensive banners including one protesting against Remembrance Sunday.

In the past few years we have seen riots in Dundee, wide-scale vandalism and disorder at Fir Park and Tynecastle and various acts of public disorder in Glasgow centred around Celtic fans.

Throughout all this, Celtic’s PR machine, has sought to quell reporting of these incidents and no substantive action has been taken against the perpetrators by the Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell.

Celtic Football Club has a major, ongoing issue with their fans which their constant denial of facts will not solve. Their official fan groups, including the Celtic Trust, seek to legitimise this behaviour by, for instance, campaigning for the right to display public support for terrorism without penalty.

We hope that belatedly, with their fans’ disgraceful mocking of the Ibrox disaster, Celtic will start to take their hooliganism problem seriously and the SPFL and SFA will do likewise, despite the strong influence wielded by Celtic in their boardrooms

Which has gone down extremely well with the Ibrox support-those that still claim to support the entity operating out of there-and you’d have to wonder why they are clinging on to what really was a fairly trivial offence, and indeed, one that didn’t really justify such airtime.

I mean, its not as if the RST are out on a major fundraiser or anything.

Can’t see why Ben Robinson, the Sunday Post hack would give them the oxygen though, unless someone knows something I don’t.

Caption competition today, and its former Rangers player Charlie Adam, now with Stoke, showing his versatility.

Great diary! Well done son.
We need to remind Ann Budge— as Celtic were once reminded by Moonbeams— that broken seats are the prevention responsibility of…the HOME stewards. However, those puir wee lambs are already working so hard to prevent opposing coaches from being assaulted, and from Jambo pitch invasions.
Guidetti has only one clear choice make a good career and name for himself with us or continue to drift around various countries until he hangs up his boots with nothing much to show for it. It didnae do Henrik’s professional career any harm.
Finally, it is crass and cruel to mock the innocent Ibrox victims. Shameful, with No excuse. I always like to think we are better than Ra Peepil: who are crass and cruel enough to mock the nearly three million who died in An Gorta Mor, including lots of my and your ancestors. They will keep doing it but we should never mock victims. It’s not the Celtic way.
I was once fully in the “I like Deila but don’t think he’s capable” camp. I still have a toe in that camp because I think we should be winning 5-0 and putting these teams to the sword. Our defence looks stronger but we should have twice as many goals. We have a big away match at Tannadice very soon and it would be nice to know we can outgun them when we have to. We can’t ride our luck with these 1-0 victories and last-minute saves from Gordon. We’ll be found out, maybe even by Sevco!

Yes,praise for getting team right. However 7-0 ? That was last season at Swinecastle.Maybe,if RD,played 2 central strikers, guys who know how to put the ball in the net, goals would flow. But,
as we know Ronny is not going to deviate from his 4-2-3-1 system(no need for a reply C.Saiz).I don’t expect us score as many goals as last few seasons.Due to system and personnel.
Why is Scepovic not ready to fire ? Who bought him for 2.3M,
was it Deila or Park ? As said before Ciftci at United would cost at least half his fee,and would have hit the ground running with goals.

Oh but if you stick a post up referring to Formations and playing 2 up front then you should expect a reply Holy.
The Formation (I have been saying this since the start of the Season) is not the problem here.
It’s the finishing that was the issue again at Motherwell.
Ralph called it right when he suggested 7-0 because by my reckoning a scoreline of 7-1 would not have been an injustice for Motherwell.
Guidetti should have had 2 (one not offside as we all know) Forrest could have had 3 Stokes 3 Johansen and Izzy 1 each.
Here’s the Highlights see if I am talking shite:
http://youtu.be/K4ZJJfzQLII?list=PLAmNSUlUap5sNWgDy9_dL5HkD7mwHgEII
I agree that Ciftci should have been a target but Scepovic was already a target when Lennon was in Charge and had been targetted due to our lack of an aerial threat up front?
I suspect Scepovic will come good just a matter of time and patience.
Some players take time to settle after all.

You feeling sorry for Kris Commons?….yeah cause he can run about like Stefan Johansen cant he?

Tonev has been pretty useful coming off the bench lately, some great crosses on Saturday.

Spot on Desi Commons is lazy as a player hence his lack of involvement in a Celtic side that now demands EVERY PLAYER put’s a shift in for the System to work.
I agree on Tonev I think if he gets a positive result from the race hearing he will be offered a contract at Celtic myself.

The goals will come from him too he’s trying too hard to score at the minute a bit of composure and he could have had 3 or 4 goals by now and no doubt there would be screams to “get him signed Celtic”?

Desi,off the bench ? Yes.Why ? He played his left-wing position.
However,he replaced our new left-winger,Stokesy.So,he WON’T
start many games here.Stokesy is our new Sammy.Tonev was poor against Partick, when he was on from the start, why ?
He was played out of position on the right wing.He was not comfortable their.
I would love Ronny, just for one game to play 4-4-2.Broonie andStefan holding.Tonev on the left, with Forrest on the right.
With Guidetti having Stokes or Griffiths as central strikers. It would be interesting to see how many goals we would score ??

I can’t understand this obsession with 2 up front. Why would that bring us more goals? The reason we only scored 1 goal on Saturday is because the strikers missed a host of chances. Had we won 7 – 0, which we really should have, would everyone be on here saying RD’s got his formation right?
We’re beginning to see RD’s type of football and for the most part it was a joy to watch.
Come January I’d like to see about 6 going out the door and a couple coming in.

Totally agree with this the fact we are creating MORE with the new System seems to have gone straight over the head of some on here?
I counted 7 clear cut goalscoring chances at the weekend and the first 20 minutes the best Football I have seen out of a Celtic side in a good while now.
If we can sustain that sort of Level for 60-70 minutes then no team in Scotland will live with us.
If we can do it for an entire 90 like Deila suggests he is after then teams in Europe will not be relishing playing us.
I agree with the clearout also some are not up to the change and some were never that good any way.

All I will say Charlie,is Deila should be flexible with his system.
If he studied Salzburg’s 4-4-2 system,he would have noticed
that Alan and Soriano play up front together, when playing at home.Away from home in Europe,he plays 4-4-1-1,with
Soriano dropping off. But,they still maintain, their high intensity
pressing game.Just a thought !
I am all systemed out now,and need to do some work.Cheers.

Andy,
It’s simple really.2 strikers in the penalty box,gives wingers(not
strikers in this position) TARGETS to hit. What strikerS missed chances ? ONE striker.Defenders can EASILY mark ONE striker.
The obsession you talk about is Deila’s.He wont budge from a rigid 4-2-3-1 system. In Europe I would play this system all day
long. But,do we really need ONLY one striker,in the penalty box,
when we play in Scotland.Use BOTH fecking systems in
Scotland,if he feels he really has too.

Guidetti missed at least 3 or 4 chances.
Forrest missed at least 3 chances as did Stokes – I class them as forwards / strikers.
I am not convinced by Guidetti – I’d like to see Scepovic getting a decent run to see what he’s got as I reckon he could be the better of the 2 once he settles down.

Sorry,Andy.
I hope I am wrong, but I can see Scepovic joining our long list
of failed strikers, and will be put out on loan in the summer,or
before, like Pukki and Balde have been.
As for Guidetti,IMO,he is a class player. But,badly needs a partner closer to him,to play off each other.1,2’s and set-up play.

I think Scepovic is lacking a bit of confidence myself and given a bit of time will come good.
He can hold the ball up and is fairly effective in the air.
Guidetti has missed a few decent chances in the last few games that say a Hooper or a McDonald would have slotted away with ease.
The least you should be doing is hitting the target and making the Keeper work.
You are obviously not seeing what I am seeing week after week because I see him ,Stokes,Forrest,Johansen and Tonev all being handed guilt edged chances on a plate regardless of us playing 1 lead striker?

Regarding the graffito at Tynecastle. Yes, it was shameful but how many ‘artists’ were responsible for it. Surely it was the work of ONE person rather than a group of people?

Tom, you’re probably right, but there’s no excuse for lowering ourselves to this level, whether it’s 1 or 100. BTW I’m 100% behind the GB politically & culturally, but I’m not going to condone some plooky faced wee teenager(s) who’s number of pairs of trainers exceeds his/their IQ(s), making sick “jokes” which provide the media with an easy excuse to tar all Celtic fans with the same brush.

When many of us are doing our best to uphold our hard earned “good” reputation, every bit of bad publicity like this adds up against us, and makes it even more difficult to get justice for those of who deserve it.

I’m a supporter of the FAC movement and strongly uphold the right to freedom of speech. However, I do draw the line at allowing pea-brained idiots with no sense of common decency, making racist slogans which – no matter how you look at it – should be condemned by all decent fans.

I’ve never understood why anyone would vandalise something. I don’t care what kind of vandalism it is or where it’s carried out, it’s completely wrong and the idiots who did this at Tynecastle should be made to pay for it.
I’ve backed the GB in just about everything they’ve done and if they know who did it and it’s one of their hangers on, they should be showing that they can self police themselves and ensure that it never happens again.

How do we know the graffitis not in the Hertz end? Just a thought. In 43 years since the disaster i have never heard or seen anything mocking the dead whilst following Celtic. Not even a sick joke so it saddens me if this was done by one of us. Team were excellent on Saturday ,the goals will come.

The idea that we will have a full stadium, for the knockout stage of the Europa league is very optimistic given the crap crowds for the group matches, thousans and thousand of celtc fans are totally pissed off with the rubbish team and diddy manager and his defensive tactics, one up front with a striker playing as awinger, and our most creative player not getting a game is pissing off people, loads who paid up front for season cards don,t bother to turn up the displays are so shite, why would they pay around30 quid to watch us being outplayed by very average european teams, like legia AND SALZBURG

elcormaco

I thought Celtic were very good on Saturday, for about an hour. Then ran out of ideas / legs and tried to protect a lead which very nearly bit us on the arse when their big sub was unmarked six yards out.

Johansen was immense, and has been for some time now. The running about and tackling stuff he can do (the Scott Brown stuff) but he is better with a bit more licencse to get on the ball when we win it back than be the guy trying to wim it back.

So one up front, or two up, a good performance, good to see Forrest start looking more like it again, and being subbed while still able to take himself off the park, thought Guidetti had a bit of a nightmare though. And yes, sorry Charlie, Id still like to see us play with two central strikers, if not from kick off at least as plan B – Chelsea did it when they were losing agaisnt Newcastle and it seemed to make a difference, that Mourinho fella is considered to know soemthing about football (but is still a c**t obviously) so I thnk being overly rigid to this system is a problem ( and I still maintain in Scotland celtic should play with two central strikers, which can be altered for bigger games or in Europe.

Its really poor from thsoe wee neds who wrote the graffitti at Tynecastle: I love laughing at rangers / 2nd rangers, and their fans, but to say what they said goes way way beyond banter and craic, and shows our support up for being as bad as what we hate most about their support, bigotted, ignorant, cruel.

IF any one knows any of the lads in this group, give thema slap and remind them what followign Celtic is all about – if they cant fall in line they can GTF and not be missed. What it is to do with the Rangers Supoters Trust though I dont get – bringing up events in Dundee (which are heavily contested) & Motehrwell – where nothing occured that was of the slightest relevance to the 2nd team they follow, they dotn have tehir troubles to seek over Govan way, we should get this dealt with in house and tell them to worry about their own affairs.

Can’t understand all this pish about a ‘pressing game’ and 1 striker instead of 2 blah blah blah, by the way, one of the best pressing Celtic teams was during the Centenary season so nothing new there. Celtic should have won on Saturday by a cricket score against the second worse team in the league (current form) who have scored the grand total of 9 goals in 15 games.
There were excellent passages of play from Celtic in various periods, but some not so good and we yet again, could have lost a goal in the last 5 minutes. Now, is it just me, or do some of the managers substitutions baffle anybody else? Why replace Scepovic for Forrest? Why not bring on Fisher and push Matthews further up the pitch, certainly would have kept the teams shape, because after Forrest went off, we looked a lot more vulnerable. Again we see Van Dijk pushing forward in the last 5-10 minutes in general play, why when playing against 10 men.
Again I will reiterate my thoughts on this ‘pressing game’. When we are playing against a slightly better level of opposition, we are left wide open and teams just need one simple pass to leave us struggling to cover space. I understand the system, but you need real strong athletes to play in that manner, we don’t have them.
Thursday will be interesting and an opportunity to test ourselves against a good team, although how seriously both teams approach the game is another matter entirely.

I think its going to take us winning the treble for the Ronny haters to come on side.
Game by game we are getting better and better and soon the goals will start flowing in.
We will destroy sevco……maybe that too will show the doubters that Ronny is going to do great things and bring us alot of success with good football being played.

My gripe with Ronny,is NO flexibility in his system to play 2 strikers,SOMETIMES.I don’t see where your avalanche of goals are coming from. It’s far too early to talk about,” great things and alot of success ”
I,like the majority of our support, will judge Ronny fully at the end of the season.Success based on winning trophies.

Debate is healthy. But if ignorance takes over, then……
Pressure for a Manager/Coach is semi and finals of cups,CL qualifiers and league titles. So,for some to say,Ronny is ” going to do great things and bring us alot of success ” is rather naive to say the least. There is a long, long way to go,before that boast can be made,if at all !

We made a lot of chances against a team two points from the bottom and, again, with ten men while Motherwell had a few good chances of their own. Average scores, rounded to the tenth, are:
1.8 – 0.8 under Deila, compared to 2.1 – 0.8 under Lennon.

I don’t like the system and feel it asks too much of the wide midfielders, expecting Stokes/Griffiths/Forest/etc to be a goalscoring threat as well as getting back into box to defend, while only having one in the middle for a final pass.

As for the vandalism, well done. Now Hearts can hit us with a clean up and repair bill thats enough to do up their stadium. Its like when someone scratches your car with theirs when there half cut and don’t want to involve the police or insurance so you decide you want four new tyres as part of the repair.
