Celtic Diary Monday November 10: Todays Word Is….Controversial

Which, in a nutshell, means Celtic didn’t deserve to win and their support is a bunch of disrespectful terrorist bastards.

We should have expected it really. Poppy day, originally  a time for silent reflection on the sacrifices made by servicemen during the two great wars, has become extended to include anyone who falls anywhere in the world whilst in the uniform of Britain.

With the British foreign policy constantly entwining with the domestic policies of several nations, its always going to be the case as the world grows smaller that some British residents will not be so keen to pay tribute.

Others, of course, will be overly enthusiastic, and then , with a degree of self righteousness , point the finger at those, who for whatever reason, don’t publicly support the British Legions annual day of Remembrance the way that they feel they should.

Personally, I took the dog out around half ten yesterday morning, and stood with a smallish crowd at a local memorial. I stood quietly and reflected upon those kids who went to war exactly one hundred years ago, and endured conditions that today seem completely unimaginable.

Thousands upon thousands lost their lives. Thousands upon thousands more returned with life changing injuries.

None of those soldiers survive to this day. but what they had to go through should never be forgotten, and the eleventh hour silence is a warning to the rest of us to try to prevent it happening again.

Its no coincidence that the last Prime Minister to fight in a war, Harold Wilson, was also the last one not to lead the country into one.

Predictably, and sadly, one or two voices broke the silence at Pittodrie. The silence may well have been broken elsewhere, but its Celtic who get the attention from the media. Sky TV began their match report by mentioning it…

Celtic gave their usual £10,000 to the Earl Haig Fund. Quietly, and without fuss. Thats the way it should be. Wearing a poppy embroidered onto a shirt isn’t paying respect because you want to, its because somehow the whole point of the day got lost, and some feel they have to.

Others, of course, positively look forward to the “celebrations ”

I thought about this scene, and others like it;

No-one should end their lives in this way. But they did. and it may have been an entirely different world we live in had they not.

Ronny Deila has called those Celtic fans who were shouting disrespectful , and although he’ll probably be criticised by some sections of the support for doing so, he’s right.

How hard can it be to shut up for a minute ?

Back at the football, Ronny Deilas Celtic stormed/leapt/finally got to the top of the table with a controversial 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

Theres that word again.

So, how was it controversial ?

Well, Aberdeen should have had an early penalty-despite the rather dubious offence taking place outside the box, Celtics equaliser shouldn’t have stood due to a foul on the dons Andrew Considine, and Mikael Lustig put the ball out when the last minute corner, which led to van dijks winner, was awarded.

Alright, I’ll give you the last one. It did look like Lustig tapped the ball over the line.

Lets just call it an honest mistake.

On the plus side, we’re back where we belong, slightly behind schedule, but we’re there. Celtic collected three points at a difficult venue against a good side after a gruelling midweek game in Romania.

More of a plus was the celebrations at the end. The team showed great spirit in fighting for the win, and a sense of togetherness  in showing their delight. Even manager Ronny raced over to join in, but thankfully kept his clothes on. I was a little worried there may have been a poppy planted in his bum to show he hadn’t forgotten what day it was.

Afterwards, the manager was still over the moon with the result.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila: Aberdeen victory was better than sex

Which prompted a text message from Mrs. Deila , which we managed to get hold of;

Bedre enn sex, eh ? Vel , kan du gå knulle deg selv fra nå av.

Maybe Ronny just got carried away.

 “We fought
all the time and when we got the goal at that time it was orgasmic… if I can say that. Even better.

 Alright, maybe he didn’t.

but he’s entitled to his moment of glory. He’s put up with a lot of criticism, he’s stuck to his guns and Celtic are still in with a chance of at least a treble, and possibly a quadruple.

 Aberdeen manager Derek MacInnes, though wasn’t pleased ;

Shay Logan, the man who told the SFa that Aleksandr Tonev called him names was sent off after the game yesterday, for “foul and abusive ” language, which we hear was directed at the linesman who awarded the controversial corner in the 90th minute.

We are assured the words “cracker”,  “honky ” “pig skin ” or “pale face ” were not used.

MacInnes sprung to his defence;

“There were a lot of disappointed players walking past the assistant referee and he has taken offence to something Shay has said to him.

“They’ve red-carded him in the referee’s room which really is quite ironic after everything that boy’s gone through.

“I know he hasn’t sworn at him but he’s been red-carded for foul and abusive language.

“It wasn’t at a Celtic player. It was just the disappointment and frustration about a couple of decisions as he was walking past the assistant and the fourth, although it was serious enough to inform the referee.

“Shay was fine during the game. He’s gone through a lot and is just disappointed we’ve lost the game.”

If you don’t count his foul on Emilio Izaguerre which almost got him a proper kicking. Izzy isn’t the same Izzy from a year ago. Foul him now and the moves he learned when he was away with the Honduran national team kick in almost as a reflex.

About time one of our players started to bite back.

 Anyway, with Jolly Jim Jefferies no longer in the top flight to amuse us with his post match grumblings, theres room for Delightful Derek to claim his crown;

“It was a game we looked more likely to win for spells than lose so we are very disappointed with the result.

“The performance was what I expected from the team. We went up against Celtic and restricted them to very little.

“We created a lot of chances and didn’t make the most of them.

“Celtic felt they were going to be in a game before it and certainly felt that way during and after it. But we want to be more than just a game for them. We want to make sure that these are games we can win.

“When you lose a game late on, especially from a set-play, the feeling of disappointment is worse.

“We have to take responsibility for a few things that happened. A couple of things went against us in the build-up to their goals but I don’t think they created too much.

“In the build-up to the first goal we feel there was a foul on McGinn on the halfway line. And it should have been a goal kick for the first corner that was given and they scored off the next one.

“We have been let down a wee bit on that side of it but all the responsibility doesn’t fall on those decisions.

“They were a factor in both goals which ultimately lost us the game but we have to win games like that in the future.

“Regardless of whether the corner should be given, we still have to go and head it. For (Virgil) van Dijk, at 6ft 4in, to score with the ball at his feet isn’t good enough.”

Oh. I thought it was brilliant.

So, thats another international break now, Celtic don’t play again until they face Dundee on November 22.

Celtic Park will be in use though, and when you spend that much money building something , its only right you use it more than once a fortnight.

Scotalnd will be using it for  two games , Ireland in the Euros on Friday, and a friendly against England on Tuesday. If you’re going to both games this close to Christmas then you presumably don’t have any kids and have figured out how to get money out of a cash point without putting your card in.

Speaking of the Ireland game, Gordon McQueen, who’s greates contribution to the world of sport was to have a daughter , Hayley,

hayley macqueen

the sort of girl you could take home to your mother, who would then  ring the police and tell you to untie her and take her back.

Gordon McQueen, who played for Scotland in the seventies, bemoaned the fact that Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy, bith born in Scotland, have chosen to play for the Republic, and he’s told Gavin Berry of the Record why;

GORDON McQUEEN has told the Tartan Army to give James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady pelters at Parkhead on Friday night.

The Scotland legend is furious the pair will turn out in the green of the Republic of Ireland in their home city of Glasgow.

Everton ace McGeady played for Scotland Schools as a teenager but switched allegiance at Under-15 level, qualifying for Ireland through his grandparents.

Er, not quite. Scotland  didn’t play him, as McGeady has pointed out several times, because  he was tied to Celtic, who did not let their players play for their school teams, and Scotland would not consider players who played for their school teams. .

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan said he’s happy for the home crowd to jeer the pair and McQueen said: “I hope they get a horrible reception because they deserve it. I’ve got no time for these players.

“You’re born in Glasgow but then you go and play for somebody else? What’s that all about? I’m not having that at all. I hope it’s hard for them coming back here with Ireland.

Exactly. Play for the country you were born in.

“I played alongside Bob Wilson and Bruce Rioch, who were born in England but they always considered themselves Scottish. That’s all I want.

“If you feel Scottish you’re Scottish but I hate these guys who think, ‘I can’t get a game for England so I’ll play for Scotland’.”

Like Bob Wilson, presumably. Tommy Docherty, in is biography, says that after the rules were changed in 1970 to allow players to play for their parents place of birth, had to be, er , persuaded.

So, according to McQueen , its okay for non Scots by birth to play for Scotland, but not for non Irish by birth to play for Ireland.

Mind you, his depth of knowledge on the subject is summed up here;

I’m sure somebody must have asked them to play for Scotland at some stage. You’re either Scottish or you’re not Scottish and you should know that by the time you’re 12 years of age.

Maybe there a clue in this video, which shows a young Aiden McGeady on the fifty second or so mark…

McGeady in 1995 Ireland jersey

There was a story  in the paper at the weekend  about a woman who survived forty five minutes without a functioning heart. I can think oif a former international central defender who has survived much longer than that without a functioning brain.

Now, its time for a new feature in the Diary. Its called “You Are The Goalkeeper ”

From Celtic Collectibles, on twitter ( again ) , what is Peter McCloy, known affectionately as the Girvan Shitehouse, doing here ?

Kissing the ground, in tribute to the holy father. The Celtic players are showing their appreciation.

Monti

If the minutes silence was just for those who lost their lives in WWI and WWII i would get it, I would understand the moral decency in staying silent for one minute and showing respect to the fallen.
I respect and will always remember those fallen in those wars, that’s the first part.
Second part is the Poppy has been hijacked by the establishment and the media to honour ALL who died in conflicts, including those who arrived on Irish shores with their union jacks and systematically killed and raped Catholics, brutalised men, women and children for many, many years.
The establishment want you to pay tribute to the likes of those who shoot to kill unarmed people in Gibraltar or those who put 7 bullets in the head of John Charles de Menaces on a tube in London.
Celtic and Ireland are intertwined, we have a large Irish following, some who will have lost family members to the Brutish Army notion of peace.
Those who attended their memorials and cenotaphs at the weekend with their plastic tears and fake heartache, who among them spared a thought for the Irish children killed or left Orphaned by their Army, or the Iraqi families torn to shreds by bombs and bullets?
The British are fascinated by grief and self pity, when you look through history the British and their empire alongside the Americans have done more damage to world order than anyone ( outside Nazi’s of course).
While I don’t agree with disrupting a minutes silence, I understand it.
Well done to Celtic on not including a poppy on our sacred shirt!

This recent “hi-jacking ” of remembrance day is a part of a deliberate political strategy , to raise the CURRENT armed forces to “hero” status in the eyes of the gullible public ; therefore taking the spotlight off the fact those same armed forces were engaged in either illegal or unpopular wars ; therefore taking the heat off the politicians who sent those armed forces to fight in those illegal or unpopular wars.
The real disrespect is shown by these politicians who’ve hi-jacked a solemn occasion for their own political agenda; AND by those who’ve turned this solemn occasion into a fucking CIRCUS (Ibrox on Saturday)
for their own sectarian agenda. SHAME ON THEM , NOT US !

Spot on JPM. The poppy publicity has been hyped up beyond belief since puppy dog Blair followed his master into Afghanistan and Iraq and if you dare say anything against it or offer an opposing viewpoint then you are a bigot, a Fenian B or a terrorist lover. Up here it’s been hijacked as the new Norman Tebbit cricket test of “proving how British one is”. Wearing one is a personal choice (something which the brave souls who fought in WW1 & 2 allowed us to do) and should be a dignified and solemn process, not Last Night Of The Proms patriotic jingoism. Can’t folk see the bigger picture?

A well thought-out piece of writing today Ralph. You won’t be seeing that kind of editorial in a tabloid anytime soon.

I might add , this AGENDA is also to deflect attention from the fact that the two most recent conflicts ( Iraq and Afghanistan) were , in fact military defeats , certainly for the British at the very least ; re- Documentary ” Afghanistan ,Last Roar Of The Lion”.
Unfortunately , the general public is only too happy to grasp this opportunity to “turn” these military reverses into glorious victories.

Poppy Day? We should have kept a dignified silence. That is the best weapon, not by behaving the way some expect us were to behave. We should always keep our critics guessing, both off and on the pitch. Remember the protest in the 1968 Olympics? Not a word was spoken.
On the pitch, we let our football do our talking making both Logan and McInnes afterwards look a bit…sheepish! The win yesterday may prove to be a turning point for our season, orgasm or no…

I’m torn on our new bad boy Izzy, not an easy target and VVD was quickly over to help to show that we’re ready to rumble. Great!
Then I saw the incident again and it was a petulant push in the back and thought it maybe wasn’t worth it. When defenders do that to our strikers it is one of the most frustrating rules in football, I hate it. I want our strikers to clean them out completely as its almost a freebie, don’t think I’ve seen a single yellow card for a tackle in that situation so have a go. It was handbags after so a red really wasn’t on the cards but why give the ref an opportunity?

andybhoy

It’s a masonic message to Brian McGinley (the ref), to have the goal disallowed, owing to the fact that the ball touched a Catholic on it’s way in to the net.
Good to see the Jungle Jim in the white top celebrating in the huns area of the main stand.

However,as far as I’m concerned, it’s the Club’s reputation which is damaged again…pure and simple.
We become the bad guys..which is right up Scotland’s street.
Nah…If you have to protest..Show your disgust by turning your back and maintaining a dignified silence…
As for the game…Nothing controversial about it…

Good point about turning your back on the minutes silence, the media r using the disruption as a stick to beat us.i remember going to an away game against st mirren a few years ago I stayed outside 4 the minutes silence as I am irish and have no respect for the british armed forces for what they have done in my country, my brother in law who is scottish went in and observed it as his grandfather fought in world war 1,my point it is a personal choice whether you buy in to the whole poppy thing, but it is constantly rammed down your throat, by the press etc, most importantly yesterday in my eyes was the result and top of the league, also maybe ronnie should only comment on issues when he is more imformed.

This facade of ‘Remembering the Fallen’ is merely propaganda to give credence to future wars that the British will undoubtedly find themselves either starting or partaking in. It is a form of human conditioning,(See Pavlov’s Dog) conditioning people to accept that war is inevitable, justified and therefore should be supported. Where uneducated 16 year year olds find themselves in far flung lands fighting a manufactured enemy, all in the name of profit.

If you do not see this for what it really is or cannot comprehend why people will not be bullied into this sort of poppy fascism then i’m afraid that there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Wonder how Sergio Aguero felt being bullied into wearing the poppy? Remember the Belgrano?

At least James McClean had the testicular fortitude to tell them where to shove it.

andybhoy

Scotland is now a region of England after the referendum.
The Poppy has merely become a conditioning tool, JPM 88 sums it up perfectly in his post.
The last few Governments at Wastemonster want to permeate this myth that they give a toss about servicemen and women who fight and die for dear old Engerlund (no other ‘region’ matters) and they have, with greater prominence, used the Poppy as a symbol to hoodwink the people and the masses take it hook, line and sinker.
May I suggest next year when when it comes around again, all supporters wear black for every Celtic player that is no longer with us and use the minutes silence to remember them and our departed family and friends.

For me the Poppy has been hijacked by the British Legion and turned into a Symbol to validate all Conflicts Britain has been involved in since time began.
As such I no longer wear one or attend any Remembrance Parades.
I say this as a Scots Born CatholIC of Irish blood who served in the Armed Forces.
As my did my dad and his father before him.
Football or the people who run Football or rather the People who run Football have slowly but surely been immersing the game deeper and deeper into the now almost obligatory mass fawning over the “heroes” of past and present wars.
I find the whole thing nauseating If I am honest whilst at the same time I find it also very crass to witness Clubs pandering to the whims of the fannies who organise these things.
Folk really should be attending games to cheer on their team nothing more and nothing less.
The Politics should be in my opinion kept well out of it as it serves nothing more than to divide and entrench opinions that in reality have absolutely fuck all to do with Football.
Whilst I do get the reason for the reaction of the few at the game yesterday I actually wonder would it not be best if those that are against the jingoistic mock bullshit inside the ground that they would be better hanging about for an extra 5 minutes outside until the pish has surpassed inside?
You have by your actions given those who wish to besmirch the good name of Celtic a free hand in doing so by your actions.

Stay away if it irks you so much and return after it has passed.
That way no harm is done and no one need be unduly upset about it.

also be dropped,4 goals ? all season.
Yes,in Europe, away from home, where you need more legs,
Commons should be on the bench.

Charlie Saiz

Stokes can often be found defending in his own half in games.
You will be lucky to see Commons break sweat over 10 yards if it’s not heading towards the box with the ball at his feet.
Regarding Mulgrew he is and never claimed to be a Midfielder.
Lenny Strachan and now Deila see it differently.
Personally I think he’s far to slow for the modern game in there and would be best served as a CB alongside Virgil or backup for Izzy when he’s off form or tired.
I have never fancied Stokes as a main Striker he has more to offer in the Supporting role out on the left where he can and does whip in some nice crosses (see the Cup Final v Hibs for Hoopers 2 goals for prime examples).
Stokes does not hide in games he grafts in games.
Commons for all the will in the world simply does not.
Commons has not been missed for me that speaks volumes.
Last Season we would have been knackered without him.
Not so this Season.

I always used to wear a poppy on Remembrance Day and attend the local parade and service, but since the coming of “poppy fascism” I neither buy or wear one, things are going ridiculously OTT. I have no problem with remembering the fallen of the two world wars, but I ain’t going to be remembering wars like the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, some of which I marched against in anti-war protests. Those that feel the need to remember these most recent wars must be so proud of the absolute anarchy in the Middle East and the rise of ISIS!! The reasons why a warmonger like Jim Murphy should never be considered a leader of the Scottish people.

I was at the taxi rank at Haymarket station yesterday and the crowds for the remembrance at the hearts memorial seem to get bigger every year. At about two minutes to eleven I got a fare so was able to get the hell out of it just in time. If you move when the clock strikes eleven you are liable to get it from some irate wee huns. My two grandfathers fought in world war one, one in an Irish regiment poor man. My other grandad suffered all his life with his lungs destroyed by gas. The football I grew up with in the fifties and sixties never had all the nonsense we get now, maybe just a minutes silence and then on with the game. If you say anything against poppy day then you are unpatriotic. The fascists are running the show now. Mind you the war is celebrated nowhere else like it is at Kinning Park, totally crass and over the top and they don’t stop to realise how stupid they are.

This has become an obsession with some folk and when you don’t agree you are treated like a paraya. To expect celtic supporters to respect a tribute to an army that even in recent history, slaughter innocent people is frankly idiotic. The Americans pull the strings in this world, anyone who stirs a people to rebel and question will be ‘replaced ‘ by a yes man.
It has been done time and time again.
Wars now are down to money and gain, wealth and oppression, America and ‘ Great Britain ‘ have a lot to answer for.
They arm a people then eventually fight them.
Do you all know more money is spent on air conditioning at American military bases each year than the entire yearly budget given to NASA?

Happy with the win at Aberdeen yesterday. A team that is pulling together is the first block in a team that will flourish together. Perhaps Mr. Delia’s plan is beginning to work, although still many performance holes to fill in. As for our magnificent support, we ought to accept just as some people revere remembrance day for bravery and sacrifice, many people of Irish descent and others around the world remember it and the British armed forces for reasons not quite so heroic. Protesting it one way or the other is fine in my view and should not be construed as anything other than the right to protest legitimate counter views of the British armed forces. I feel proud that there are people in our magnificent support that can celebrate it and at the same time people who protest it – so be it. What is malignant here is the Mass Media views of those who protested as bad people, no just people with a different view

I do not wear a poppy. However, I have and will continue to advocate better conditions for service personell and much, much better compensation for those injured on duty and the dependants of those killed on duty.

An expression accurately used here today, has been Poppy Fascism.
Regretfully for someone brought up in a Labour household, I find myself having to blame much of this on Gordon Brown. In the years immediately preceding the last General Election, he realised that he was an electoral busted flush. In a desperate attempt to counter this he played the MoreBritish than British card.

@Holy,
Go look at Johansens goal v Aberdeen it’s Stokes who supplies the final ball threaded past the defence .
Guidetti is deployed as the main Striker he should be the one in the middle waiting for the delivery not the other way round.
Had it been the other way round Stokes would have looked up first BEFORE sending it across the box.
Stokes has 4 Goals and 4 Assists so far in Games this Season whilst not brilliant it’s not that bad considering the deeper role he is now being asked to play.

Charlie,
We will agree to disagree re Stokes.Last season, before
Christmas,he scored something like 6 goals. When Griffiths arrived, and they played as a partnership,he then went up to 20
goals.I believe Ronny will be flexible, and change from 4-2-3-1,
to 4-4-2,depending on who we play.
Yes,playing a better quality of team in Europe,4-2-3-1 is the right way to go.However,in the league,4-4-2,should be the
norm for us.Stokes for me,is not scoring enough, and I would sell him to Bolton in January.Mulgrew, not having the legs for midfield, should be a squad player,to fill in,here and there.
