Celtic Diary Thursday November 6: Ronny to Raise Roof In Romania.

He’s never said that as such, but its a catchy title. Sort of.

Anthony Stokes coughed or sneezed or something on the way to the airport, and his mum says he can’t go out to play with his mates, which means the hard working Irishman won’t be available for tonights Europa game against Astra Guirgui.

Stokes turned up for the flight at Glasgow Airport despite feeling unwell and club medical staff decided he was too ill to travel. Picture: SNS

Pity, really. He might not score or even create much, but he doesn’t hide and always puts in a shift. With Kris Commons also injured, a crisis looms as there is no-one to pass the corner kicks to the near post defender. Instead, Charlie Mulgrew will take them, and thats caused panic amongst the bookies, as it makes Virgil van Dijk a cert for first goalscorer.

Theres no John Guidetti either, as Manchester City specifically said that they didn’t want any of their players doing well in the group stages of the European matches, including those on loan, so he has to sit it out, but Aleksandr Tonev  is okay to play, and he might well take Stokes place out on the wing.

Or it could be Wakaso Mubarak, who works hard and fits the model required by Deila to play out wide, or even Leigh Griffiths, who may be a lot of things, but he’s not lazy.

Speaking of Tonev, captain Scott Brown has come out and said that he, and all the other players, are right behind Tonev after he was found guilty of racist abuse under new SFA rules that have done away with evidence and use the playground rule of ” he done it sir ” to convict. Brown said;

“We know he didn’t say it. All the lads in the dressing room believe him because he doesn’t come in and lie.”

Brown knows a win tonight for the Bhoys and a win for Red Bull will mean European football after Christmas, and although its not entirely in Celtics own hands to qualify tonight, Brown wants Celtic to do all they can to get the win;

“All we can do is try our best to win our game, then see what’s happened in the other match. Hopefully, we can secure the three points in Romania and Salzburg can also get a result.

“But if we don’t get through tonight we won’t panic. We’ll still have another two games to go.”

“We are not going to put all our eggs in one basket.

“If we don’t go through tonight we will then face Salzburg at home. Or we could even qualify when we go to Zagreb.”

We’d rather not leave it that late, if thats okay. Brown agrees;

“If it’s possible, we would definitely want to avoid that scenario.”

“It doesn’t matter how we get through. Reaching the knockout stage has always been the target for us.

“If you had asked us at the start of the group if we would have taken seven points from our first three games and the chance to go through tonight, we would have bitten your hand off for that.

“We have not played our best, but we have got the results and that’s all that matters.”

Which should give them the confidence to go out and win tonight. an early goal should settle the nerves, but with no Guidetti, the responsisbility will be with Stefan Scepovic, who has a lot more to his game than he is given credit for. Not only can he hold the ball up well, his movement causes confusion in opponents defences, and he creates space for others. Which means that the three attacking midfielders, probably Wakaso, Johansen and McGregor will all get chances.

With Scott Brown and Charlie Mulgrew likely to play the holding game, with Mulgrew dropping deep to provide a three man back line, alongside  van Dijk and Denaayer , when the full backs ( Lustig and Izaguerre ) go on their wanders, the team and tactics look fairly predictable, which is probably a first for a Deila team.

 But, bearing in mind that its been almost impossible to predict any line up this season, we’ll probably see;

Zaluska, Matthews, Ambrose , O’Connell, Twardzik, Bitton, Kayal, Henderson, Tonev, Griffiths, Berget.

Looking at that line up, the squad is maybe not as paper thin as we sometimes think. Except for probably Berget.

And don’t forget those that are injured.

Incidentally, Radio Clyde, which provides people who like football but don’t know a fecking thing about it with the chance to host a phone in, is going with the Guidetti gone in January line, presumably to wind up Celtic fans so they will listen to the show. Guidetti cannot go anywhere in January. He can, however, sign a pre contract with anyone he wants.

But he will still be at Celtic for the Europa knock out games, should we qualify.

Aleksand Tonev is not the only one who has been accused of racism. UEFA want to talk to Man city midfielder Yaya Toure, who attempted to offend Russian fans and players alike last night when his side lost to CSKA Moscow by making the shape of a swastika on the pitch.

Embedded image permalink

With over 25 million dead during the Second World War, this shameless act puts anything Tonev may have said into the shade.

Manchester City, of course , are having a terrible spell in the UCL again. But this is what happens when you reward players financially before they have actually proved they are worth it at your club. Just one of many things wrong with the game these days, and a glance at the list of teams who have already qualified for the last sixteen of that competition shows you another.

Its the same old horses galloping down the same old track. Maybe we should enjoy the Europa League before we end up back in the UCL.

While the Champions League leaves a slightly sour taste in the mouth, a request by Racing Club Buenos Aires makes one positively want to vomit.

The Argentinian club won the Intercontinental Cup, or the World Club cup, by beating Celtic in 1967 over three games. You all know the story, and its still impossible to watch tv clips without jumping up and shouting at the telly.

They want to celebrate fifty years since winning the trophy by reprising the fixture so they can gloat about how they cheated their way to the title that is probably the hardest of all to win.

The game would take place in 2017, and if the board have any sense of how the support-the older support-feel, they should simply send a two word reply.

One of those words is “off “

I know it was a long time ago, and I know that fifty years is perhaps too long a time to hold a grudge, and I’m aware that we have played Atletico Madrid and Rapid Vienna since those shame games, but we had no choice in that.

Racing should be told no.It would dishonour the Lions if we were to take part.

Speaking of anniversaries, Celtic are 127 years old today, and I bet you never even sent a card.

Joe Sullivan on the official website explains;

Sunday, November 6, 1887, exactly 127 years ago today, for it was then that representatives from the upper echelons of the Irish community in Glasgow, most of whom who had witnessed John McFadden’s speech back in February, gathered at St Mary’s Hall.

Bodies such as the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Catholic Union, the Irish Foresters, the Home Government Branch of the United Irish League, the St Aloysius Association and the Irish National League as well as local Penny Savings Bank and a Total Abstinence Society were present in some manner but the main objective was the formation of a football team to raise money for the Soup Kitchens of the East End.

This glimpse back in time brings me to this stunning painting of Brother Walfrid amidst the tortured souls of the starving , painted by Peter Howson, which not only captures the horrors of starvation, but the concern that Walfrid would have shown.

 Embedded image permalink

I like it, and it deserves a home in Paradise, but apparently Howsons paintings usually go for six figures, which would have Lawwell keeling over at the auction.

Still, lets hope it finds a good home. Where it can be appreciated.

Fancy a chuckle ? The new non executiove director at Second Rangers, Mike Ashleys puppet, I forget his name, flew into Glasgow at the same time the hoops were flying out to Romania, and thinking that the assembled press pack was for him, he asked a policeman to move them.

Thanks to Celtic collectibles on twitter for the pic. And to Jobbytash , who made it. I think. apologies if I’m wrong.

Diosgyeori Miskolc wee the side Celts beat before they faced Politechnica back in 1980.

Still on 1980, why did Danny McGrain have to shave  his beard off ?

Celtic played Rapid Vienna in a friendly 4 months ago Ralph?

Not sure where I stand on these – should we play sides in ‘friendlies’ that have wronged and cheated us before? Or should we hold a grudge forever?

If we hadn’t drawn Sevco in Cup, and they weren’t promoted, I wonder how long it would have been before our board seriously considered a glamour overseas friendly v The Bosh…

Tony,

we weren’t playing Rapid , 4 months ago , to ” celebrate ” their 1984 “victory” over us .
A random friendly against , let’s say , a touring Racing side OK.
Playing a game to ” celebrate ” their abuse of the Lions , NO CHANCE.
Example : Israel v Germany OK.
Israel v Germany to celebrate Adolf coming to power , NOT OK.
Extreme example , but you get the point .

Ha! Yes an extreme example but I see the difference. I worry the board won though, and will just see the cash.

You could be right , re – the board Tony .
If you are , they’re not only out of touch with the fans , but with the very Club itself .

Danny had to shave off the beard when we played in Albania as facial hair was not allowed in that country. Think we were playing Partizan Tirana in the EC. In another strange custom of that country all visitors had to compulsory visit the statue of President Enver Hohxa

Indeed Holy…
Remember ,remember the 6th of November
A Club was born on that November morn
To feed the poor the main agenda
A Sligo bhoy from Ballymote had come to help the many
In St.Mary’s Hall they answered the call
Created a Club without a penny

The bold bhoys’ went out to face a foe
The team they called The Rangers
They scored five goals conceded two ignoring all the dangers
McCallum scored the opening goal
on that glorious 28th of May
They say he made a sign to god and created The Celtic Way’
The team was formed from Hibee bhoys
who answered Walfrids call
To come and play to feed the poor by simply kicking a ball
Many years have come to pass since that day in May
Nothings changed the fire still burns
We’re still playing the Celtic Way.
We look now back at the ancient past
the achievements and the glory
127 years of charity at the heart of the Celtic story
Every day history is made an unbroken golden thread
Stretching from the birth in Glasgows Calton
Till present days Paradise in old Parkhead.

Sadly we will play racing club as no doubt money will be dangled in front of directors but hopefully we’ll be playing inter Milan too and give our surviving lions the chance to saviour their moment of triumph..

Indeed,Tony.
We opened Rapid’s new stadium for them in the summer. Our board have NO scruples. If there’s pieces of silver,to be made
from such games, our board will go for it.
Forget Rapid and Athletico,to play Racing would be a HUGE insult to our greatest team.
As for tonight,if we can score a goal early,we have to then shut
up shop.Doesn’t matter if it’s not pretty.1-0,and take the 3
points is of paramount importance.
Then on to the sheepies, who have been saying too much for themselves. This will be a grudge match !

Come on the hoops for tonight. Give us a recognisable team, keep the ball, no madness at the back and we ll get our chances to win.

Danny had to shave his beard, for Children in Need? The old board sponsored him a Scottish pound note for doing it?

Listened to Lenny the other night on SSB – it seems the “he was fired” line may be wide of the mark, as is the “he couldnt take working for penny piching Peter any more” line – he spoke very highly of the board at Celtic, about the club and was diplomatic in responding to Ronnies talk about fitness. I think a wee part of him misses the job imho. A part of me misses him.

Made the mistaqke of listening a second night as Lewis Macloeod was talked up as a multi million pound player and future ballon d’or and all of Celtic’s players would be out the door by the time of this league cup semi final. Mad stuff.

Go on Cletic, give us a wee birthday present tonight, Hail Hail

elcormaco,
I don’t listen to the Sevco sycophant station. But,you are right,
Lenny wasn’t fired. However, when he was informed, what his budget would be,for qualifiers, this then made up his mind to
go.As the players will testify,as Lenny informed them,of his pre-season plans.
Would love to see Lenny back, after title No.7,to take us to ’10’
How would the Zombies react,to such a scenario !!

Happy Birthday Celtic, please give us a repeat performance of the 125th v Barca. That would do nicely. HH

As I said modestly, I (Tom Campbell) wrote it after a visit to Argentina and meeting with the Racing Club players and officials – and even their supporters! I think it’s still available from Fort Publishing and Amazon.

I hope we do it but I’m not confident, looking back at the first leg, I still can’t believe how good we made Astra look and how much we allowed them to play. Hope I’m wrong but … [insert generic rant about playing with one up front].

I would like to play racing club again, provided they make a full apology which is accepted by the Lions, but I fear the board will put money before integrity as we continue the further transition from a charity/football club that fed the poor and played the Celtic Way to a business where every penny is a prisoner [insert generic rant about the board becoming more distant from the fans].

Happy Birthday Celtic, let’s make it one to remember.

Disappointed and we missed a trick, but we’ll be ok once we learn how to pass the ball to each other.
Dirty bastards, if Matthews wasn’t as honest, they would have been down to 10 a good bit earlier.

Same old, same old Celtic. Why do we always need a 2 goal cushion, away from home in Europe ?
As said earlier,Griffiths should have started. He showed more
when he came on,than both Scepovic and McGregor put
together.
We should have qualified, tonight. At least one Celtic fan will be happy,Peter Lawwell.Well,I think he is a fan,as it now
means, the Salzburg game is not a dead rubber.Watch tickets
being advertised,as of tomorrow !

Sometimes wonder about your iidea of being. a Celtic Fan ???
The Salzburg game will be a big Euro night for Celtic as a Club, I.e. Fans ,Players ,Manager Staff and Directors. We need to win this game to be sure we are not travelling to Zagreb needing to win there to stay in the competition after Christmas and the Green Seats really need to turn into people that night. Unless of course you would rather see us out on our erchie to give you some more ammo for your negative tones on this site
Could be one of the all time great Euro nights at CP but the Fans need to turn up.

Your talking pish Danny bhoy.Negative tones ? I am the most positive guy you will meet.Rather see Celtic get beat ? Get a
grip ! FFS.I love my club, that’s why I have had a season ticket for 30 years.
I see it as it is.The Lawwell jibe was just a JOKE !
Astra are poor, and that is the ONLY point they will get.Griffiths should have been on from the START !
Dan,instead of having a go,at a fellow Tim,look at constructive
criticism as a POSITIVE !!

Missed the first few minutes and that fog was brutal but from what i did see we were the better side and were a tad unlucky not to win all 3 points. Wakaso continues to impress out wide though young Mcgregor was poor tonight. Also think the thumbs goal should have stood. Beat Salzberg at home and we qualify. With Guidetti to come into the fold in the ko rounds things are starting to look bright Hail x2

Charlie Saiz

Scepovic was poor tonight nothing seemed to stick and he really should have secured the win when through on goal real lack of composure when it mattered blasting it over.
Browns passing was brutal second half in fact it’s been poor since his return from injury I think.
He and Virgil gave the ball away far too much in the second half this effectively let them back into it almost as if they had both switched off thinking it was won.
I thought their keeper had a good night myself saving some decent efforts in both halves he more or less kept them in it at 1-0.
It’s Europe no matter who you play 1-0 is seldom a comfy scoreline and it proved so tonight.
8 points from 4 Games plenty to be cheerful about and 2 more games to secure a spot in the next round.
