Celtic Diary Saturday June 21: Referee In England Games Faces Match Fixing Enquiry

Just kidding. They’re definitely out now.

For those of us anxious to get back to watching football that we are actually bothered about, Celtic TV will be covering all the pre season friendlies, and with a years subscription just forty quid in the UK-, theres no mention if England will be classed as “overseas ” after independence, then its probably something to be done sooner rather than later.

The seven games, confiirmed on the official website, are;

  • July 3: 5:30pm – FK Krasnodar
  • July 5: 5:00pm – Rapid Vienna
  • July 8: 6:00pm – LSK Linz
  • July 11: 5:30pm – Dukla Prague
  • July 19: 5:15pm – Dynamo Dresden
  • July 26: 2:30pm – St Pauli
  • August 2: 2:30pm – Tottenham Hotspur

If you are overseas, its £12.99 a month, which is still cheaper than planes, hotels and a pie. Especially the pie. And theres the added bonus that if the games shifted, all you have to do is turn it off and watch something else.

Its apparently too expensive to get the berth back on the Sky Astra satellite, estimated by at least one Chief Executive at Celtic to be around £1m , and with other clubs losing money with the set up, Celtic are reluctant to go back down that path, but its worth considering that other clubs don’t have the world wide appeal of Celtic, and its also worth bearing in mind that you retain editorial control, from the clubs point of view, giving the board, the players and the fans a platform to get their own opinions out without them being either distorted or just ignored by the media.

With the right to reply offered via phone ins and emails, it would be a chance for the club to air their views, but also to listen to those of the support.

And Craig Burley, Andy Walker and Pat Nevin would be nowhere near it.

Anyone else hear Pat Nevin refer to England as “we ” when summarising their latest half arsed effort in the World Cup ?

Apparently he took one of his kids to a Scotland game, and found the singing of  “She’ll be coming round the mountain”  offensive , as it used to be sung by railroad work gangs in the US , which harkens back to the days of slavery, and more importantly the bit about pink pyjamas might upset the gay community.

Anyway, the English are welcome to him. He’ll fit in well with their distorted view of world football. The last time I saw the English worked over this bad I had to look up the word “coalition ”

Another pundit who proving he “knows nothing about nothing ” as my old da used to say about me ( he had a point ) is Adrian Chiles, who tried to cross swords with Martin O’ Neill, another ex Celtic manager trying to talk sense amongst a host of fools..

Martin O’ Neill puts Chiles and Co in their place

And thats without this idiot..

The three lions, which are actually leopards that turned into pussies, will be returning home next week after the Italians failed to beat the Costa Rica team that the tv experts figured would be the groups whipping boys. This same Costa Rica that the more optimistic on the tv panels figured would be beaten by the English while the Italians won all their games, thus ensuring Hodgsons side could progress, and leave Brazil,my the usual route, having been beaten on penalties.

And I thought I was over optimistic when we drew Ajax, Milan and Barcelona.

Something no-one has mentioned with regard to Englands piss poor performance in Brazil is that its actually winter over there, and whilst still warm and humid, it goes dark early, and although the tv studios are working on British summer time, the players have had little time to adapt to the dark nights and shorter days, which in turn means that their body is beginning to tire before they take to the field. Add to that the fact they had a 1770 mile flight from their base in Rio to the first game in Manuas, and you begin to feel that someone has made a complete arse of planning their stay down there.

Not convinced ? Remember the lethargic crowd at the game against Milan back in December. It felt like it had been dark for ages by the time kick off arrived, and I remember sitting in the ground feeling very tired-at kick off.

But don’t tell them, let them carry on making a mess of it.

On the back of the news that the enthusiastic Uruguay fan with the Scotland top on was actually a chap from Glasgow who had travelled out to distribute some football tops, the sort of thing he does regularly, the England squad siezed on an opportunity to get some good publicity in.

They visited an orphanage on the outskirts of Rio to see for themselves the conditions that kids live in out there, a million miles from their own pampered lifestyles;

” It was heartbreaking to see the look of sadness and despair on their faces, ” said Jose, aged 6.

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon-though i’m still not sure he knows that -had his own view;

“There’s a lack of Champions League football in this squad,If you look at Jagielka, Leighton Baines and some of the younger Liverpool players  they’ve never played Champions League football and for me that’s one of the best areas to develop your game.

“You get to play against the best clubs, the best players, against the best coaches and best formations. The Liverpool lads will get that next season which will be great but it’s a season too late for them with regards to this tournament.”

 He’s on the right lines, but at Liverpool, the wee fellow Stelling and Daniel Sturridge can look to Luis Saurez alongside them, and Wayne Rooney and Danny Wellbeck usually have Robin van Persie somewhere close by. all they have at international level is each other, which isn’t enough.

Anyway, thats enough of them.

A Daily Record headline prompted anger amongst supporters of an Ibrox club when it was completely misunderstood.

£175,000 seized from criminals

to be awarded to Celtic charity

to create life changing opportunities

for disadvantaged young people

The paper needs to move quickly to dispel rumours that any money had been taken from Rangers, old or new, and handed out across the city. Though I suppose a precedent has been set for when Hector finally hands his files in to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The report says that;

CELTIC will use the money to introduce the Gateway to Employment project, which is aimed at young people aged 18 to 24 and focuses on offenders and those at risk of reoffending.

( I think that should say re-offending. )

Speaking of re-offending, Christian Nerlinger, the man who was supposedly the first recipient of the tax free EBT system of renumeration is apparently considering a return to Ibrox as a director of football. Though we hear theres a different reason for asking him back to Glasgow, and he won’t be the only one…

Its good to see the charity arm of Celtic getting some publicity, all too often their work doesn’t get a mention.

Tony Hamilton, chief executive of the foundation, said: “Funding and support from CashBack allows us to work with young people, in one of our key geographical areas in Glasgow, who have specific employment needs, which we can help address.

“This project has clear outcomes and targets and there are a whole series of initiatives towards helping our target group get back to full employment.

“At Celtic FC Foundation we have a specific interest in health, equality, learning and poverty and this project, throughout its life, will cover all four key areas for young people who have offended and/or are at the risk of reoffending. Helping them to have the best possible chance of finding meaningful and worthwhile employment has a benefit for all in the community.

“We are grateful for the support of CashBack and we intend to make this programme an exemplar of what we do and what we can do at Celtic FC Foundation in those communities who need an opportunity.”

This is where Celtic TV would come in, promoting this aspect of the club, becoming a voice form those who need one, such as the foodbanks and other just causes.

 Its why we were formed in the first place, and while its maybe a little crass to be constantly blowing ones own trumpet, we should at least be letting them know we can play one.

New manager, new season, new attitude ?

Robbie Keane, with 131 appearances for Ireland is the most capped player who has played for Celtic. He is also the top scorer. However, not all his goals came while he was at Celtic. Who has scoed the most international goals while at Celtic ?

I like the theory about the English team’s body clock letting them down and I think it’s right…still set to 1966 I think.

I thought the date was 1066, but of course like 2014, that was a disaster…

deadhead67 – an apt moniker if ever there was one.

A YES vote renders the SNP redundant, a NO vote ensures their existence ad infinitum.

If you don’t understand that, you are too stupid to vote.

Soon we will be celebrating a century since James Keir Hardie left the Labour party on the eve of the “bosses war”. That’s a f***in’ clue. Your allegiances are like your moniker. Maybe time to move mate. Fanny Alexander and Jim ‘lets bomb them all’ Murphy should gie you hoose room.

Enjoying the football so far games are end to end for the so called big teams.Not enough cards for the shovers and blockers who break up play.Not enough experience for England’s young players thought they did ok.

I’m hearing some very strange rumours about the truth behind the exit of Mjallby and Lennon. Not prepared to put them on a public forum as such just yet but just wondered if you bhoys know anything? Originating from Glasgow these are although I’m hearing them from Birmingham.

I wish deadhead would use his head, the referendum vote has nothing to do with snp, it is a vote to decide whether we leave the the union and take care of ourselves instead of been run by the english, if we vote yes we have another election to decide who we want to run scotland, be it labour, snp, tories, lib dem

Ralph,

Lennon – allegedly, he has been dabbling with a young “lady” and has got her up the duff – said lady just happens to be in a relationship with a young Sevco player. Had to get out is what is being said.
Big Dolphin – caught at Paradise up to the nut sack in a young boy – apparently Dolph is known to be good at interior decorating and things and has a track record for poofery.

Now the guy who is spouting this is an employee of that esteemed toilet roll, the record. A Hun too as you will no doubt expect. I’ve met him myself and in all honesty, I cannot believe this shit and have put it down to the dark side having nothing to look forward to than the ultimate demise of the club in the diddly league. To deflect attention from yet more financial disaster, spread nonsense about the celts.

Agreed. I’m sure if Mjallaby was that way inclined, it would have emerged before now. Still, I think it’s preferable to sending bombs through the post which is how they usually express their feelings.
