Celtic Diary Monday June 2: Sleeping Giant Stirring ?

There is speculation in Ireland-and everywhere else-that Roy Keane will be announced as Celtic manager either today or tomorrow. Ireland manager Martin O’Neill didn’t want to comment on the story , instead focussing on Irelands 0-0 draw with Italy on Saturday night;

“We genuinely haven’t discussed it today because we had a game coming up but I will speak to him obviously over the weekend and there may be discussions, further discussions, I don’t know. But he will keep me informed and, again I will reiterate, it would be really disappointing if he left because the impact he’s made here.”

There was talk-but not any sort of serious talk-about a possible job share , with Keane retaining his position in the international set up and taking on the Celtic job, but that would actually leave him managing Scotland players with a couple of qualifiers against Ireland coming up, and at the moment theres enough concern that he won’t be able to do one job never mind two.

Keane hasn’t commented himself, but has been busy looking at estate agent websites who are selling houses in Edinburgh, which according to Aiden McGeady, is where he will live if , sorry , when , he accepts the post at Celtic Park.

Edinburgh means he will be away from the goldfish bowl effect in Glasgow, and with no top flight football in the capital this coming season, it will bring a bit of excitement to the old place. Make them feel less left out.

McGeady, playing his cards close to his chest, said;

“I’ve actually asked him a couple of times if he’s going, but he’s not the type who gives much away. But he’ll cope with it (the job). There isn’t a doubt about that because he’s got the quality and the pedigree,”

Then he dropped the cards all over the floor;

“Roy said said he’d probably stay in Edinburgh if it happens,”

I’ve a feeling I know which pub he’ll use…

Brian McClair is now being mentioned in places other than the Diary as a possible-indeed even likely-number two. His work with youngsters at the Manchester Utd Academy has not gone un-noticed and he is one of only a few players that Keane seems to respect and trust. For now, at least.

Don’t forget about Rene Mullenstein just yet, though.

The Daily Star, desperate to get something right, claims that if Keane turns the job down, Malky Mackay is ready to step in;

EXCLUSIVE: Malky Mackay to replace

Neil Lennon at Celtic if they fail to land

Roy Keane

Or, the story claims, Davie Moyes might be approached.

Where do they get this rubbish ?

Incredibly, someone , somewhere, will today read that paper, and nod quietly to himself, before turning to his mate and saying it as though it is fact.

Even more incredible is the fact that a Daily Star reader will have a mate who doesn’t keep sending him to the shop for a tin of tartan paint.

The hurt amongst some of the laptop loyal in Scotland has started. One or two of them are unable to digest the fact that a truly world class player, with an admittedly erratic record while he learned his trade in management is even considering the Celtic job. Andrew Smith, for instance, in the Scotsman;

”  In the absence of a league challenge; in requiring to work within Celtic’s business strategy that demands the development of players for selling that have often been scouted and recruited by others; and in consistently being expected to remain in on and off-field profit, the job clearly now has the potential to be a peculiarly unrewarding and draining experience – to which Neil Lennon would surely testify.

A business being expected to remain in profit ? Well, theres a novel and refreshing idea.

Keane, though, is in a wholly different position from Lennon. He has had the other jobs that Lennon now covets. And, in respect of his spell with Ipswich Town from 2009 to 2011, if not his earlier stint leading Sunderland back to the top flight, ultimately failed to convince that his wondrous playing abilities were transferable to the coaching sphere.

Theres the first little dig. Admitting he was a great player-which even the laptop loyal cannot deny, but he’s a shite manager. If he had been a good manager, they’d have picked on his temperament.

It is obvious what Celtic’s major shareholder Dermot Desmond sees in Keane, with whom he enjoys a level of friendship. This brooding, beguiling, brutal figure is a fascination magnet.

Oh, wait, he does;

Brooding, beguiling and brutal. Looks like his thesaurus only goes up to “B” , otherwise he’d surely have said, “clever, charming and charismatic ”

Among the highest-profile figures to grace British football, he would make Celtic talked about and reported upon beyond these borders.

Oh, right. One of the unique things about Celtic is the enormous number of Supporters clubs outwith Glasgow or Scotland. We kind of get mentioned already.

A UK-wide profile is important to Desmond as he still hankers for Celtic moving beyond its Scottish base.

We have heard that Desmond really does want to waken his sleeping giant. But the base will remain in Scotland. It has to. Its where the stadium is.

Although many seem to think so, Keane would not be a great risk. It is impossible for a Celtic manager not to win the league, improbable that Celtic won’t do better in the domestic cups next season than last, and negotiating three qualifying rounds of the Champions League should not be as daunting as it is sometimes presented when two of these ties could quite easily be against part-time opponents.

Smith plays down Keanes achievements in Scotland, before he actually achieves them.

Granted though, you can question the fit of Keane and Celtic beyond these elements. The club need a coach who, above all, can foster camaraderie and self-improvement among the squad. Lennon excelled on both. However, there are questions over whether, with a managerial style seen as blunt and sergeant-major like, Keane can do the same.

As was true of him as a player, if Keane was at the top of the management game he wouldn’t come within 100 miles of Celtic Park. He certainly has a feeling for the club, that is beyond argument, but he only washed up in Glasgow in January 2006 because he needed sanctuary at a time when his body was beginning to rebel against him and his mind was a state of flux.

Er, he could have picked his club. Juventus were favourite for his signature at the time.

In terms of the burning desire to prove himself in frontline management, that has been patently reignited courtesy of coming under the wing of Martin O’Neill with the Republic these past six months, Celtic presents him with certain possibilities that no other club would offer him.

Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder Ronnie Whelan gives voice to the obvious lure that could outweigh any disincentives where the managerial position at Celtic is concerned. “You have to remember there’s not an awful lot to beat if you’re manager at Celtic,” he said. “They won the league this year again by a sackload of points.

Like Bayern Munich did . And like Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two dominant sides in Spain didn’t. football isn’t as simple as that.

It’s the Champions League I’m sure he’d be looking at more than just managing Celtic day-to-day. But it’s Roy’s decision.”

Whelan thinks Keane does have a point to prove. “I think a lot of managers like that, when they have a bad experience at club level, they want to get back into it again, they don’t want to be scarred by the experience of being sacked at Ipswich or wherever. I think Roy wants to again get back into day-to-day management of a club side. Hopefully he waits with Ireland a little bit longer.”

That “longer” may well only be a couple of days.

Dare I say that the papers are a little worried about his arrival ? Keane could ignite Scottish football, and its profile, in a way that the old guard at the SFA, especially those charged with promoting it, have failed so miserably at.

Anyway, we hear that Keane has already earmarked his first signing, designed solely to put bums on seats

His impending arrival does have at least one journalist excited though;

As if the Rangers saga doesn’t provide enough fun and games, here comes Roy Keane to Glasgow. Happy days..

If only they’d shown so much enthusiasm when the scandal at Ibrox broke all those years ago,  then perhaps thousands of Rangers fans wouldn’t have been fleeced of their money, and maybe some of the creditors wouldn’t have been stiffed either.

Mind you, over at Ibrox, they aren’t taking this lying down, well, at least as far as the press are concerned. Amidst stories that Kenny Miller and Kris Boyd are about to return, former defender Carlos Cuellar has decided he wants a piece of the pie;

Don’t worry, chubs, its a figure of speech, but I got you worried, eh ?

Anyway, the Spaniard told the Sun-so they say:

” One of my main targets… is to get back to Rangers as soon as possible. The club is in my heart.

The dotted lines indicate a portion of the sentence not deemed relevant by the reporter. We believe the missing words are

if no-one else is daft enough to offer me a huge wage, then what I have to do …”

“I feel I owe something to the Rangers supporters because I left after only one season. The year I did spend there was the best of my professional career.”

Wait till he finds out its a different club. And the only excitement is whether or not your wages will go into the bank every month.

 I got myself a new computer game at the weekend. FIFA 2022. Unfortunately, after downloading it, I discovered it was corrupted.

You may have wondered why the greatest fooballer on earth, Pele, hasn’t been wheeled out to promote the current tournament in Brazil.

 Thats because his son has just been sentenced to 33 years in prison for , amongst other things, money laundering.

 Thankfully, nothing like that ever happened in Scotland to taint the games image.

The blue eyed bhoy in Saturdays Diary was Jim Melrose.

 This picture, from Lisbon Lion on twitter, shows a Cup winning team. What year ?

1965 – “In a thrill-packed finish to the 1965 Final,Billy McNeill, Celtic’s international centre-half, moved upfield to head the winner from a corner” – Presented with the”The Hornet” – it says so on the back, so it must be right!

yeah, 1965 cup final team, must stop following the same folk as Raplh does on Twitter!

If its to be Keane, first reason to worry:

With Forster likely to be on his way, being a saleable asset, I recall that one of Keane’s first singings for Sunderland was Craig Gordon. For £9m. Thats Craig “bolsa wood joints” Gordon. For £9m. Oh mercy.

On the plus side really glad Izzy and Lustig have re signed, I thought we had a new strategy of letting any players we dont sell run their contracts down and leave on a free.

I know the hacks are all saying “Keane rules himself out…..” or more often he REJECTS Celtic approach.

But, pray tell who said Keane was offered the job. I think we all guessed he was in the short list and a genuine favourite, but nowhere was there any indication he was to be offered the position.

As others have said, he was a candidate. There are several others so lets move on and forget the “rejects”.

AArrgghh, just appoint a bloody manager!!
There is less than a month to the CL qualifiers and the board wasted 2 days waiting on a reply from Roy…WTH!! who’s bigger… the club or a possible candidate!! If any person I offered a job too had said they wanted to wait a couple of days to mull over the offer…I would just phone my 2nd choice and offer them the job and if they said yes, it would give me great pleasure in phoning the 1st choice to let them know I have retracted the offer!! Bye, Bye

Rant over… lol Hail, Hail

Calm down dears, it’s only a manager? Have any fans anywhere appointed or brought a manager or player or for that matter an owner to this club? We back them or help fire them. They are always given a chance, whoever it may be that is the way it is. Let the guys in control do their job. Time will tell and we have time. Hh

Just letting off steam Lurgan Tiger…it frustrates me that the board are so calm..they are not aware of the fact that I always have a bet with my mate who is an Ibrokes supporter…..and the bet is that we will qualify for the CL group stages and this stance does not help my cause one bit!!

That team pic was taken just before a Glasgow Cup game (when it was competed for with the first teams) against an old club that was called Rangers at the time. It was my first ever Huns game.
