Celtic Diary Friday February 14

Happy Administration Day.

For those romantics amongst you, Happy Valentines Day, and good luck getting any result with whatever you’ve bought your other half today. Remember, do it this year, and they’ll expect it every year.

A bit like Administration Day, really.

Now, all that happened two years ago could have been prevented had the media told the truth to the Ibrox hordes. Instead, they sort of ignored what was going on, and then pretended it didn’t happen anyway, and today, two years down the line, the stage is set for a re-run of a highly entertaining and amusing series of events. And its not that far away…

We hear that they are hoping to bring out a new debit card that will be used by their supporters, with the club getting a cut of all transactions;

So, with the benefit of experience, you’d think that their support-whats left of it-would be hell bent on making sure it doesn’t happen again. Instead, their anger is aimed, much to the delight of the few spivs who haven’t already sold up and sodded off with their share of the spoils, at the Celtic support who have forced “Roll of Honour ” into the UK charts to highlight the nonsense that is the Offensive Behaviour and Threatening Communications Bill.

Chris Graham, who writes for something called the Rangers Standard-which conjures up the image of a chap marching ahead of a fine battalion of clean shaven warriors heading off into battle against some chaps armed with sticks and the occasional stone, has given us his thoughts.

I’m not going to reprint them here, nor provide a link, because apart from it being a really turgid and difficult read, it simply isn’t worth bothering with-just the usual you’re all mindless murderers bullshit, and completely misses the point behind the actual protest.

More so, could it be his indignation and outrage are more aimed  at his own supporters inactivity over the death of their club, whilst the Celtic  support have been successfully mobilised to support not so much a cause, but a very real threat to liberty within society ?

Or is he just a knob ?

In fact, I don’t know why I even mentioned it, not when theres other stuff to be going on with.

Georgios Samaras has been blamed by one or two-okay, maybe a few more than that, supporters for the defeat by Aberdeenlast week, and manager Neil Lennon thinks thats unfair;

“I don’t think making Georgios a scapegoat for it is justified. Our major problem wasn’t going forward. In midfield and defence we were not as cohesive as usual. It’s unfair to make any player a scapegoat for any performance.

“Georgios came into the team and set up our goal. Then we lost our way, we didn’t seem to settle at all, so it’s unfair to blame Georgios. In terms of his future, I’m expecting talks but we are in the dark about whether he is going to stay or go. It’s not been made clear to us yet by him or his representatives.

“At the moment we have to take it that he is going, because his contract’s up in June. My gut feeling is he won’t be here next season, unless something remarkable takes place in the next week or two.

“It would be fair for me to look at alternatives between now and the end of the season. I have to look after the club’s best interests, Georgios obviously must look after his own.

“But the team comes first. It’s up to me, I pick the team. I picked him last week and I might pick him again on Sunday.”

Oh bloody hell. Just as we were ready to forgive him for the occasional lapse….

Debate raged amongst the replies to yesterdays diary as to who would, in the event Lennon left, take the helm at Celtic, which raised excitement in the Owen Coyle household.

We’re kidding ourselves if we don’t think Celtic is still an attractive proposition for a manager, of course it is. So we probably wouldn’t struggle to attract a replacement, its more about whether we would be ambitious enough to go and get one. One who isn’t called Owen Coyle, that is.

Looking at Lennon himself, and the chances of him leaving, his mentors Gordon Strachan and Martin O’ Neill would both reccommend going after four years, Strachan especially reckons thats the life span of a boss.

He might fancy a new challenge, he may want more money, but it seems to me that he just loves the place, so he isn’t for quitting.

But should we keep him, is he up to the job ?

Bar the odd mistake, yes, he is. The problem is that the odd mistake tends to be the same mistake , repeated not once, but a couple of times. He is still a relative novice, and has had to cut his teeth at the top. Having his squad ripped apart on a biannual cycle doesn’t help either, something we tend to forget when criticising him, and neither does not being allowed to replace them.

There are more passes than failure ( especially sidieways ones lol )  but he does need to move it up a gear though, which might be beyond him, but he at least deserves a chance.

Wittering fool Peter Shilton made a few remarks about Fraser Forster needing to move to England the other day, and Neil Lennon has sprung to the defence of his keeper.

“How does Peter Shilton know about Fraser? How often has he watched Celtic play? It sounds like it’s a throwaway remark but sometimes those are the ones that do most damage.

“Peter was one of the world’s best and had such a prolonged career with England but remarks like that are not helpful and certainly not encouraging for Fraser. ”

“They do the player an injustice and it is really unfair on Fraser.

“If Peter had been here over the past two or three months then he might change his mind.

“We know what a good goalkeeper he is and he has done enough to warrant a place on the plane to Brazil. He’s certainly within the top three English goalkeepers.”

Victor Valdes, Barcelona keeper, apparently said that Forster would have to score goals in Scotland as well, to impress the English. He maybe has a point there.

Perhaps fools such as Shilton and Graham are best just ignored, as they are few and far between.

Roddy Forsyth, in the Telegraph asks the question;

” What’s the difference between Scotland and England? Apart, that is, from one insisting on exclusive use of the pound sterling and the other wanting all the North Sea oil for itself? ”

I don’t know, Roddy, whats the difference between Scotland and England, you wonder , with perhaps a yawn and a sigh..

Then, the rest of the article, an excellent summation of the abuse Neil Lennon gets, wakens you from your lethargy;

Well, the most successful manager in the Premier League might have infuriated rival fans with his often abrasive and confrontational style, but none of them supposed that to be an invitation to throw missiles at Fergie while he sat in the stand at other teams’ games, far less assault him as he stood by the side of the pitch or send him bullets and bombs to back up the periodic death threats aimed at him.

To put it even more simply, when did you last see a Premier League manager require a bodyguard to stand close by the technical area, scrutinising the crowd for potential menace? Yet Neil Lennon has his ex-US Marine, “Big Kevin”, to perform just that function.

Last Friday, Lennon reflected on the most recent incident, at the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Tynecastle, when coins and a cupful of drink were launched at him by Aberdeen fans sitting nearby in the main stand. He was most animated when discussing the accusations of those whose pious mantra is “he brings it on himself.”

As this column has pointed out frequently, Lennon played football unmolested in England for 14 years. It was signing for Celtic that brought the hate down on him, both in his native Northern Ireland and in Scotland – not, as he stated last week, because he was a dirty player, but purely and simply because of his choice of club.

Certainly, when he became manager, Lennon was a frenetic and confrontational figure whose style led to two four-match bans in his first season. What looked like ungovernable temper was – after the fashion of Fergie – a calculated move to animate his players in contrast to what Lennon saw as the overly passive demeanour of his predecessor, Tony Mowbray.

But as he grew into his role he revised his approach and thought about the greater consequences of being unable to control matters from the pitch side. The upshot has been the considerably more restrained character seen this season although, as he noted last week, those who were on his case when he was haranguing match officials have had little or nothing to say about his moderated behaviour.

Moreover, if Lennon brings reaction on himself, where is the wider acknowledgement of his frequent response to charity appeals? For the past three years he has accepted this correspondent’s invitation to take part in quiz nights in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He is a gracious presence amongst table guests who are unknown to him, he reads out rounds of questions with ready wit and he never asks to leave early – nor has he ever had to be cajoled into attending. When a fan of an east coast club told me that he disliked Lennon – “no particular reason – I just can’t go him” – I cited such unsung deeds as the charity work.

“Aye, well,” said the fan. “That just means he’s a Jekyll and Hyde.”

If Marie Curie Cancer Care had a pound for every football manager who confessed to undergoing a change when he stands by the pitch, they wouldn’t need to stage fundraisers. But in Lennon’s case, the most vivid personality split has been evident in the way he has been treated on either side of Hadrian’s Wall.

And, after all, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde were the creations of a Scot. ”

Well, thats not something you’ll see everyday. Common sense and honest reporting in a Scots sports section.

Lennon has spoken about Tony Watt, and it looks like the two are ready to work together next season;

“Tony will be back in my plans. The reason for sending him away was to get games under his belt.

“He’s playing well and scoring goals, but he’s our player and he’ll be coming back. I thought a year away would let him realise what he had here and hopefully the penny has dropped.”

There were a few stories that Liverpool were poised with a £6m bid for him in the summer, but that story is the result of a crossed line when Neil Lennon was talking about signing a £6m striker and someone shouted  “Whaaat ?”

A headline ion the Scotsman had the words Alan MacGregor, Celtic and Rumour Mill all in the same sentence, which is kind of ironic….

Well done to the “Yes ” campaign in Scotland yesterday, getting Gideon Osborne to speak on your behalf yesterday. Won’t be long before they won’t even need the formality of an election with guys like him being unleashed to offer their opinions. Meanwhile, Osbornes boss had his mind on other things..

Gordon Brown offered his opinion on Osborne, and to be honest, it looks like the Fifer is glad to be away from it all.

Seriously, the only way Scotland can fail to secure independence is if they put Ally McCoist in charge. With Charles Green in charge of the money.

Cillian Sheridan was the player correctly identified by nearly everyone in yesterdays picture, though I am a little worried about the chap who thought it was Momo Sylla, and would respectfully request that he never acts as a witness for the defence if I ever end up in court.

Today, see if you can work out the ex player from these clues;

Andy Docherty,

” If we get over 20,000 on Sunday,it will be a miracle.Lucky if
we get 25,000 season tickets next season. ”

MAN UP,MAN !!

Are we not Celtic supporters FAITHFUL through and through.
Just because the game is on Sky,an excuse not to go.I’ll be their,and I’ll renew my ST for the 30 year in a row.

This is bliss,compared to the dark days of the 90’s.When the
Huns,illegally bought titles.You went to away games then, as we
were FAITHFUL.You got mocked by Huns, for only having 7 on
your supp.bus.

But,WE were,and ARE PROUD TIMS !!

Our club has not died.On the brink of going under again are
Sevco.Rejoice and be happy.
Neil will get it right.A standing area is going to be introduced for the youngsters,next season.The board WILL deliver on quality transfers.They KNOW the fans are demanding action.

But,Please,a REALITY CHECK for all those that are negative on
here.Our club will always be the DOMINANT club in Scotland
for the forseable future !!

I’ve had my ST for over 30 years now, originally in the old CP, then to Hampden and back to the new CP.
I’ll renew (this time), but I know several who won’t be renewing.
If we don’t get a standing area, we will have real problems attracting the young ones.
Life is good, but it should be so much better.
BTW, there is no way on earth Peter Lawell will sanction “quality” transfers – even if he had the will to spend the money, he wouldn’t sanction the wages that a “quality” player would demand. It aint going to happen.

Cheers,Andy.

I respect your opinion.Maybe, I am just easily pleased.To win
the league,and play in the group stages of the CL, every year,
is suffice for me.
It’s like manna from Heaven,compared to soul- destroying
away days in the 90’s.
Financially, the money is their ,to buy a 5M+ target man, and wages to match,approx 35k-40k.Lawwell WILL splash this cash
for 2 reasons.

One, the team needs a key striker,and Neil deserves one.And
two,Lawwell has to show a statement of intent,to the fans,
that he means business.Re quality.

Neil has to stay, just with him being here. It shines a glowing beacon of truth on what a bigoted little uneducated back water country this really is and will always be. Just the mention of his name in front of ‘HUNS’ sees their faces contort that much it would win any gurning world cup. Does he want to be the torch, i would think not. HH

We definately have a good base of players here despite the continual selling of top assets. No doubt more will leave but we must help the current crop of players by bringing in quality. Before the end of the season I would like to see some of the fringe guys getting a run of games – not 20 minutes here and there but six or seven starts. As for Neil Lennon, im not convinced he will be here next season and frankly that doesnt fill me with despair. I love the guy and want him to succeed – a true celtic man just not a great celtic manager. Happy Administration Day to one and all. YNWA

@Schoosh,
The best way to watch the Huns squirm is for them to see Celtic winning trophies!
Since when was a 2 year old club the template for Celtic to measure success!
Lennon doesn’t have a clue, some of you guys need to think with the head instead of the heart!
ARE YOU TELLING ME NEIL LENNON IS THE BEST MAN FOR THE CELTIC MANAGERS JOB?
FFS!!!!

@Holy sea,
How patient were you with Tony Mowbray?
Did you stick by him?…..

Monti,

I respect what you say,and I know all you want is the best
for Celtic.I also know Neil was blocked from signing a quality
striker in January.
As for Mowbray, he was out of his depths, in the Scottish
league, never mind the Champions League.So,I was delighted
when he was shown the door.
As Billy McNeill, said in the media today,Neil had to pick up
the pieces left by Mowbray.Win the League, and twice go through qualifiers to get to the lucrative stages of the CL.
Who am I to argue against Big Billy.He says Neil is the man for the job,but should be doing better in the cups.

@Holy sea,
Cheers m8,
Can we agree to disagree on Lennon though?
I really do feel Celtic would be better with a major name as manager, I think it could sway transfer targets m8! HH!

@monti Mowbray sat and watched as we were pumped 4-0 from St Mirren and there was no sign of improvement throughout his tenure. Totally unrelated to Neil Lennon’s situation.

Tony Watt.might be back with us next season, but as for neil lennon, no time is up for him at celtic football club.

The hard truth is the only way you can judge how you feel about Lennon leaving is if you know who his replacement will be….

I thought Strachan had done a great job under difficult circumstances but by the end I was definitely in the camp that it was time for him to go….then when I heard we were getting Mowbray, and even more so a few months into his time there, I would have personally got on my knees and begged Strachan to return!

I think overall Lennon has done a good job in his time as manager….turning the team round from the Mowbray shambles, a great CL run last season and some great signings…..but I wouldnt be too down if he decided to move on.

But it all depends on who replaces him….if we get a good manager with a proven track record, especially in Europe, then I’ll be really happy…..if we just go for the cheapest option then I’ll be prepared to beg Lennon to return.

I’m amazed that we’re in mid Feb and Lennon still doesn’t know if Samaras is staying or going, and that he will continue to pick him either way.

Firstly, we should be letting players get to 6 months left on their contract. We should look to sell them if they refuse to sign an extension with a year left. Secondly, if they refuse to sign and get to 6 months left we should be telling them they’ll play for the reserves for those six months, no matter how important they are to the team (and Samaras isn’t that important). I’d much rather see one of the fringe/young players get game time than someone who is just looking to win a move somewhere else.
