Celtic Diary Thursday November 28

Theres a striker on his way to Celtic Park ! Too late to do anything for us in the Champions League, but he’s coming.

Mo Bangura is about to end his loan spell at Elfsborg and will shortly return to Glasgow. And Neil Lennon is ready to welcome him back.

“The loan was to get Mo some experience and give him some games. I think he has done quite well while he has been over there.”

Seven goals in 24 games, and he has helped Elfsborg to one win in the Europa League. Actually, with those stats I’m surprised we aren’t lauding him as the answer to all our problems.

Bangura will join Fridjonsson, Pukki, Balde , Stokes and Samaras in the least effective offensive line up since the Light Brigade woke up one morning and decided that today was the day.

If you took that lot to a car boot sale you wouldn’t recover your petrol money.

There is one bit of good news , though. Fraser Forster, who on balance, is one of the few players you would rather see stay, has come out and said he won’t be pushing for a move in january;

Shame he didn’t come out from off his line on tuesday, but you can’t have everything.

” Am I happy to stay here at least until the end of the season? Yes, Celtic’s a fantastic club and I don’t see that (being out of Europe) being a problem,’ said Forster.

‘This club has been fantastic for me over the past three-and-a-bit years.

‘It’s a huge club and I’ve loved every minute of being here since I first walked through the door.

‘The gaffer Neil Lennon, (goalkeeping coach) Stephen Woods, (sports scientist) Bill Styles — they have all been fantastic for my career.

‘They’ve brought my game on and developed me as a goalkeeper.

‘It’s obviously a big disappointment to go out of the Champions League but I’ll take it a game at a time and not worry about the World Cup.

‘It’s seven months away and there is a lot of football to be played.’

One scenario here is that if he stays, has a good World Cup, and then leaves, the price would go up, but since that might mean England having a good World Cup, then on reflection that might not be a good thing.

Michael Grant in the Herald speaks of a champions League hangover, and looks forward to a possible thirty more games this season for Celtic.

“25 in the league and five if they win all their William Hill Scottish Cup ties without replays. No matter how enthusiastically they try to dress it up it is the equivalent of trying to sell stale beer.

They face nearly half a year of ticking off the wins to complete the formality of landing another league championship, and then maybe a double. Such is their domination of the top flight that people correctly fear boredom. There is no need to get the little violins out for them – every other club in the land would kill to be in their shoes – but Celtic have given themselves such highs over the past 18 months that there is not enough of a kick to be had from winning a title without Rangers. ”

Of course ! Thats the problem! No Rangers !

If only we had had the foresight to bail out and forgive the tax dodging cheats before they died then none of this would have happened.

While Celtic bore us all to tears by winning everything in sight ( except the League Cup ), the Rangers tribute act are storming up the leagues setting records and thrilling us all by outplaying part timers. Comparing the reaction of the press to the two scenarios tells us all we ever needed to know about their loyalties.

Anyway, if you want to know how others see us, the game itself passed into insignificance as the Green Brigades banners hogged the headlines worldwide.

Celtic v AC Milan - UEFA Champions League

The banner shows William Wallace, the heroic rebel Scot who stood for freedom and independence from England and met an untimely and brutal end at the hands of the oppressors. Alongside him was Bobby Sands, a heroic rebel Irishman who stood for freedom and independence from England and met an untimely and brutal end at the hands of his oppressors.

And asked the question ” Terrorist or Dreamer ? ”

Good banner, and a good point well made. Unfortunately, whereas William Wallace had his exaggerated story portrayed by Mel Gibson in a Holly wood blockbuster, thus elevating him to iconic status, Sands had his story told in a low budget and ultimately disappointing film which pretty much went straight to dvd.

Both men died for their country, but they have received different reviews.

So, outside of Celtic Park, the banner, which made a good point but at the wrong time and place, was seen as an embarrassment.

NBC Sport, in the USA , reported;

” UEFA and Celtic are reacting in unison to pro-Irish Republican Army banners unveiled by the club’s fans at Tuesday’s Champions League match against Milan. There, in the section occupied by the Green Brigade supporters group, tifo equating IRA activist Bobby Sands with Scottish revolutionary WilliamWallace was unveiled during Tuesday’s pre-mathc ceremonies.

“The terrorist or the dreamer,” the display asks, individual lyrics appearing around large portraits of Wallace and Sands. “The savage or the brave? Depends whose vote you’re trying to catch or whose face you’re trying to save.”

SBS World News ;

Celtic fans who unfurled a banner of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands at Tuesday’s Champions League loss to AC Milan – prompting a UEFA charge – are disrespecting the club, chief executive Peter Lawwell said on Wednesday.

Thats not what he said exactly, but the chance to associate the club with the IRA didn’t go unmissed.

Lawwells comments did not specifically mention the IRA.

“Last night (Tuesday) was nothing more than clear disrespect for the club and our supporters who now face another Uefa charge,” Lawwell said

“There have now been a number of Uefa charges made against the club during the last three years, relating to behaviour, displays and pyrotechnics – it cannot go on any further. Let’s be very clear. Following the actions of a small minority, these charges are made against the club.

“It is the reputation of Celtic, our great club and our great fans which is damaged, while others carry on indulging in such behaviour. Our supporters do not want this any more. We are a non-political organisation, a top football club in fantastic shape, aiming to play its part as a major football club on the European stage.

“Regardless of the political views people hold, football stadia, whether it is Celtic Park or anywhere else, should not be used to promote these. This is something which all football authorities, including Uefa, have stressed for some time and something well known by all supporters.

“The club don’t want it, our manager and our team don’t want it, our fans don’t want it and the football authorities don’t want it – it has to stop.”

The club faces charges under UEFA rules, which state a ban on;

“the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message not fit for a sports event, particularly messages of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature.”

And no matter how important the point is, or how accurate, thems the rules.

Still, I suppose we could just give UEFA their money back and tell them we don’t want to play in their tournaments anymore.

A statement on the club website said;

“Any individual or group identified as being involved in a political display at a Celtic match will be banned from attending matches involving the club.

“With regard to last night, the club made it abundantly clear to the group in question only football-related displays would be permitted and a political display would lead to a UEFA charge.

“We were assured all displays would be 100 per cent relevant to Celtic. Therefore the actions of this group are very disappointing. We have been inundated with complaints from Celtic fans regarding the display.”

This was an own goal by the Green Brigade, a banner which should have made people sit up and think has now been condemned as pro terrorist.

Of course, it wasn’t , but there is a feeling that a great opportunity to make a valid and important point has been wasted.

And it doesn’t look like there’ll be a second chance. Lawwell will ban them, and they cannot say they weren’t warned.

Despite all the joking about the bloody drum, they will be missed.

Remember the quiz yesterday ? The meteor about to strike. Well it might land right outside Celtic Park. Which could tidy the surrounding area up a bit.

With the financial scandal at Ibrox about to move into the endgame, deflection is needed to keep as much attention away from the now defunct club which was allowed to cheat, lie and steal virtually unchallenged for years.

And here it is, courtesy of the Daily Mail money section;

” The Co-op Bank has come under fire for dishing out £33.2million in cheap loans and overdrafts to Celtic Football Club, which was chaired by former Labour home secretary John Reid.

MPs last night demanded an explanation for the rock bottom interest rates and accused the mutual of using the ‘hard-earned cash of millions of savers for political gain’.

It is the latest twist in the row over the troubled lender’s links with the Labour Party.

Own goal: The Glasgow-based football club has long-established links with the Labour Party

Glasgow-based Celtic was chaired by Lord Reid, the former home secretary under Tony Blair, between 2007 and 2011.

Labour’s former energy minister Brian Wilson joined the Celtic board in 2005 and remains a director.
Insiders said the loan pre-dates both Wilson and Reid’s arrival at the club.

But Celtic has long-established links with Labour, which has controlled Glasgow City Council since the 1970s.

The latest company accounts for Celtic show it has a £12million overdraft facility charging an average of 1.5 per cent over the year to June 30 2013.

This is based on one percentage point above the Bank of England’s base rate, which is currently 0.5 per cent.

The remainder is made up of a £21.2million long-term loan, with an average rate of 1.65 per cent. This makes even Labour’s recent £1.2million cheap loan at 4 per cent – or 3.5 per cent above Base Rate – look expensive.

Co-op’s hugely generous terms once again highlight the close links between the scandal-hit lender and the upper echelons of the Labour Party.

The political connection has come under the spotlight after former Labour councillor and former Co-op Bank chairman the Reverend Paul Flowers was caught out allegedly organising drug-fuelled orgies with rent boys.

Mark Garnier, the Conservative MP and member of the Treasury Select Committee, said: ‘The questions about Labour’s influence over the management of the Co-op knows no limit. It now seems that cheap loans are available to organisations where Labour ministers have significant influence as well as directly to the Labour Party itself.’

He added: Why were Labour and their friends receiving cheap loans? What political outcomes was the Co-op trying to buy? Were the millions of savers at the Co-op bank told their hard-earned cash was being used for political gain? Have any of the Labour-related soft loans contributed to the £1.5billion black hole in the Co-op balance sheet?’

The first deadline to vote on a rescue package to plug a £1.5billion black hole in the lender’s finances falls at 4.30pm on Friday.

The Co-operative Party, the political wing of the Co-op, is the sister party of Labour.

In order to help shore up its finances Co-op Bank stopped lending to small firms in May.
Anyone else wondering if this has the hands of Mediahouse all over it ? Well, its  clearly been planted by someone who doesn’t have Celtics best interests at heart. Or the Co-ops, for that matter.

The antics of the Co-op boss and former Labour man who blew all their money and enjoyed a rather outgoing lifestyle have served to help the conservative press keep attention away from their own friends in finance who have been at it.

So, everbodys happy there.

Way, way back when all the troubles at Old Rangers began to emerge, the diary said they would go down kicking and biting and try to take everyone else down with them.

Looks like its starting to happen, so the end must be very close indeed.

This is from the Mail as well. Just to get their ramblings into some kind of context. Entirely irrelevant to this story, but always worth mentioning whenever I can.

and here is a very nasty man who tried very hard to impress his own extreme right wing views on the people of Britain an Europe back in the thirties.

rothit

His name is Harold Harmsworth, or Viscount Rothermere, the then owner of the Mail. Dunno who the other guy is, but he looks like a wrong ‘un.

We’ve a podcast tonight, so anything you want to add, mention it here or on twitter. The comments to yesterdays diary were all of a very high quality and will probably form the basis of the post match inquest.

We’ll be talking about the Milan game, and all the fallout. And anything else we can think of. Or anything you can think of.

Now, what game is this, and why would the memory of it have re surfaced this week.

1996-09-10: Celtic 0-2 Hamburg, UEFA Cup 1st Rd - Pictures - The Celtic Wiki

Its a funny old time in the news.

For instance, we have Nigella Lawson, off her tits, snorting cocaine. Thats a major story, and I couldn’t care less.

But, if it was Nigella Lawson, snorting cocaine  off her tits, perhaps I might give it a passing glance. Someone needs to look at how they present their stories.

Poor girl, I believe she is inconsolable after splitting with her husband Charles Saatchi.

Last I heard, she was running through the streets crying and asking where her Charlie was.

Celtic vs Hamburg UEFA CUP 1996, our fans had a rather naughty banner behind the goal in Hamburg for the away leg!!!

PR

That looks like Celtic v SV Hamburg from 1995/1996.

Not sure about the connection with this week though. Something to do with abysmal defending by The Sieve? I remember the two Hamburg goals were as a result of appalling defending – the first one inside 2 minute or so – where the goalscorers were left in acres and acres of space.

At least the return leg was good fun, 19 years old and let loose on The Repperbahn….

The score at Parkhead was 0-3. I know, I was there. The hamburg fans were singing Rangers songs. Might actually have been the cup-winners cup. What did the naughty banner say?

Jon, beg to differ on the score:

I have no recollection of any banner at the away game, just everyone being in giddy mood fueled by a combination of German beer and ladies of the night….

…. DOH! correction – some bird called Nigella has just turned up demanding that I help clean a large quantity of white chalk-like dust from her extensive mountain range of a chest, using only a rolled up 1000 euro note. Aye it is, she insists

Admire and enjoy the E Diary.

Time for some auld heids to give the Green Brigade some sage counsel?

Not been a good CL for Celtic or our “brand” this time around.

On the park, possession stats (circa 35%), goals for, against and points total not impressive and with the MSM just luvin the Dam Sq saga we didn’t need the adverse publicity as a club. Most MSM missed the main message of the banner anyway – easy to interpret (none so blind…)as solely “pro Irish Republicanism”

I probably share much of the GB politics but wrong battle, wrong time, wrong place and Celtic circa $30k lighter for it with much (international) brand damage.

Maybe somebody connected (on here or elsewhere) needs to dish a lesson on political maturity, lobbying and PR to our oft’ entertaining GB comrades.

Hail Hail.

Ralph, a belated well done from emerging from a darkened shell to write a composed and balanced article on Tuesday’s nights horror show. Most of the posts were great examples of balanced (after a night of gnashing and wailing) thoughts on where it has went wrong or going wrong for us.

It seems we have reached an impasse right now. The board’s policy of doing ‘just enough’ is going to bite us on the bum. We scraped through the qualifiers and failed to add any real quality to the squad for the CL campaign which was a huge mistake. We cannot buy a goal right now yet we have spent over $5m on strikers, or rather forwards, to sit on the bench in crunch games. Adopting the Ajax policy of nurturing and selling for a tidy profit only works if we have a steady stream of talent breaking into the 1st team from the youth set up, and that certainly ain’t happening. Buying ‘projects’ to replace established valuable 1st team players every summer will NOT work, especially in the hands of, and let’s be honest about it, what is still a rookie manager in Lenny. We need to rethink our plans if we don’t want to slide into European purgatory again. Our domestic form on the whole is pretty turgid too and hard to watch.

As for the Green Brigade, well it really is all over for them now. How many chances and warnings do they need? I know they were making a valid point the other night but what means do they resort to in deciding what matters they will supposedly represent the support on? Who decided that those banners would be welcomed by the majority of the support? I’m afraid their bridge is now burnt and that is a great pity as when they stuck to football matters they were unequalled with the displays, banners and general noise. Sorry to end on a downer but Parkhead will now be a graveyard for the rest of the season without the drum and European football. We will be lucky to get crowds of 30,000 for the remainder and although that says a lot about fairweather fans it is indicative of the general malaise on the pitch at this present time.

Mo is back back back!
Just the news we need to cheer us up after Tuesday. Or not.

An idea for discussion tonight would be a bit of squad review / post mortem- who should stay and who should go?
For example:
Who is CL class and retained at all costs? (uhm…Lustig, VVD?)
Who is worth keeping for SPFL or still young enough to get better? (Forrest?)
Who should be sold / driven to the airport? (Kayal)
Who should be given more of a chance? (Rogic, Pukki?)

Just a thought.

“We are a non-political organisation, a top football club in fantastic shape, aiming to play its part as a major football club on the European stage.”

Yeah Peter – you see that’s the problem , the aiming is being carried out by strikers wholook as if they would drop the banjo before the got it anywheer near the coo’s backside.

But hey , we are in fantastic shape £20mill in the bank , the proles have paid their books until the end of the season . Another £100k onto your bonus Pete but hey lets give the little people 15% off anything form the Celtic stores (even 3 for 2!).

We’re not Starbucks, Amazon or even Tesco – our club has socialist roots due to it’s very nature of why it came into existence.

We may be more than just a club but unfortunately we are also a plc.

Who’s joking about the bloody drum? I wish that guy would learn some rhythm or stick his bastard drum up his arse.

Anyone else sick of hearing about losing Hooper, Wanyama etc? Would those guys have scored four goals on Tuesday? Of course not – the defence was pure and utter pish and that’s what cost us the game, not the loss of the aforementioned two. Our much lauded signing policy has backfired terribly this year, we’ve bought a load of keech.

As for the banner display. For fuck sake. How many times do those guys need to be told that kind of thing is unacceptable in a football stadium? I have long been a fan of the GB but that takes the bloody biscuit. They clearly have no respect for rules that everyone has to abide by and couldn’t care less for the opinion of the majority. These people really need to grow up. Either that or eff off somewhere else.

As for the Coop story this could be seen as mismanagement by the club when I pay 1.25% on my mortgage and have done for years (BOE base + 3/4%)It’s all how the story is spun

Mancbhoy

I don’t necessarily think the defence was pish, just the system. Has anyone ever said something positive about zonal marking?

I thought we’d established a long time ago that Sammy isn’t an out and out striker, Lennon admitted as much himself. Hooper (or a player of his sort) is a big miss, as all the strikers we have now want to come towards the ball and link the play instead of waiting on the 6 yard line to finish a move off.

I agree with Ralph that only the back 4, Ledley and Commons should be kept. Would like to see Rogic get a run along with some of the young lads that come through at Lennoxtown. We’ve won everything at youth level for years, surely it’s time to see if they’re up to it???

Funny thing for me about zonal marking is that it appears to be more open to criticism than the alternative – i.e. man marking when someone loses his man leading to a goal.

One of the key tenets of zonal marking at corners is to make sure you have a man 10 yards away from the kicker to try and put him off the delivery and in theory not allow him to put the ball where he wants – Celtic didn’t do that the other night with disastrous consequences.

Whether that was a tactical oversight on NL’s part or someone not doing their job is hard to determine…

@Frank McGaaaarvey

The green brigade has burned it’s bridges?

Because they displayed a banner that wasn’t welcomed by the majority of the support?

Conformist pish? I thought you were quite bright, but clearly not. Sure, you may wish a dialogue about ideas but you shouldn’t be complicite in the silencing of ideas. Let the people sing. If they want to scream the sash at Ibrox, respect their opertunity to defile themselvesf. If they want to sing roll of honour at paradise let them enjoy themselves. But why stop people expressing themselves? Ideas are what drives humanity, not consumption or wealth.

I think you should apologise to the class for normalising such reactions in the pinnacle of human endeavour (the Celtic support).

I’m waiting.

Got to agree, this is the club who stood up against the SFA who wanted us to take down the tricolour – was that not a political gesture?
Football has become so anaesthetised in the last few years that I’ve pondered giving up my season ticket and using the cash to join a golf club. If the GB are banned, where will the noise / support come from. Are the rest of the support ready to step up to the plate and create an atmosphere?
The PLC have created a monster – the fans have relied so much on the GB getting the atmosphere going that the rest of us have forgotten how to create an atmosphere.
Instead of banning the GB, the PLC should be looking at ways to expand that section and creating a standing section. We need to attract the youngsters and they want atmosphere / rebellion.
If we can’t capture the imagination of the youngsters the club will die as the old ones(myself included) die off or just decide it’s no longer worth the bother (myself included).
This is the time the whole club should be uniting – god help us if we lose to the diet huns at the weekend – our season will be over by xmas – the SPL is won now barring a collapse that only fat sally could preside over. The PLC needs to find ways of getting fans into CP – alienating a large section of the support (the GB and their supporters) will cause untold harm.
Have a read at the GB website to see how many fans are talking of not going back – might just be an idle threat, but should the PLC take that gamble?
p.s. I thought the display was very well thought out and can see no reason for anyone to be offended, unless they were looking for reasons to be offended.

Squeakybhoy,

I didn’t say I, or the majority of the Celtic support (who I can’t claim to speak for, and neither can the GB) did not agree with the message conveyed on the banner. The simple fact is that there have been repeated warnings about such displays at Parkhead and these have been repeatedly ignored by the GB who seem to think that they are above such trivial things as the rules laid down by governing bodies. “We will do what we want regardless of what the club and other supporters think” is the mantra. Do you want them to carry on until we are forced to play behind closed doors which is where we are heading? As for your shallow songs argument, what is up with singing Celtic songs at a Celtic game. I love the Republican tunes as much as anyone but have long since differentiated between what belongs at a Celtic game or otherwise. Getting out of your face and belting ditties out at a Celtic game or in the Gallowgate is hardly likely to unite the 32 counties is it?
When I said the GB had burned their bridges I wasn’t expressing a personal ideal. I don’t want to lose them and the positives they bring but a ban is inevitable because they cannot be trusted not to harm the club. When were the opinions gauged on whether the majority of the fans wanted such a display at the game or did the GB simply assume they were speaking up for everybody? I certainly don’t appreciate being told what I should be thinking and who is supposed to represent me.

Noise Bhoy

Frank. Can I call you Frank?

U asked the question: who in the Green Brigade decided that this banner would be welcomed? My point is very simple. Your asking the wrong question. The banner does not have to be welcomed. If we restrict ourselves to only banners or songs that are welcomed by the majority we lose the ability to explore ideas.

Digest that idea for a moment.

Yes you are right. They have been warned and they may well be breaking UEFA and PLC rules. Big deal. Stop fretting about punishments and have a think about how we will protect our fans and freedom of expression. The assertion that songs and banner will change nothing is infantile.

What in my post was neddy in your opinion? Say that again and I’ll key your motor? Got it?

What’s Lenny been saying? Tell him not to listen to the man. A small gesture to the board that the fans were united and would not be told what to sing, say or write and they’d soon take the fight to UEFA and we’d all be a little more free

No one represents you Frank or wants to tell you what to think. I’m just telling you to think. The difference is more than mere grammar.

I’m available for life coaching if your having problems with authority in other aspects of your life. Is everything okay at home Frank?
