Looking forward to tonight’s game and expecting to see quite a few changes. Would kike to see Johnny Kenny start and, providing things are going well, also see Daniel Cummings come on for a spell in the second half to give big Adam a rest with next week in mind. When Dundee got battered the other night, the average age of their players would have been around 23 while Raith are a team of veterans, including ex-Hibs duo Hanlon (35) and Stevenson (37), whose average age will be over 30. Speedy runners and fast, one touch football will destroy them but we’ll probably be content to cruise to a 4-0 win without lifting ourselves out of second gear.
A nice way to tie in today’s cup game with our CL tie on Wednesday would be to take a trip down memory lane and evoke that early goal which Raith Rovers scored in Munich back in 1995 to give Bayern a real fright in this UEFA Cup match, even though the Germans had already won the first leg 2-0 in Scotland. A thunderous free-kick cannoned off Bayern’s defensive wall and flew into the corner in spectacular fashion to completely bamboozle Oliver Kahn. The home team went on to win 2-1 and featured some of Europe’s top players of the time such as, Babbel, Hamman, Ziggler, Herzog, Papin and, last but not least, Jorgan Klinsmann. It’s probably better not to remember how Raith Rovers managed to qualify for Europe that season though.
I think Idah, will play a part, to keep him up to speed and hopefully continue his scoring run.
He’s not played a lot of football, so unless he’s feeling the effect of the recent games, I’d, ah, expect him to start and play for 45-60m.
A cameo late appearance would also be an option.
It would be good to see more of Kenny but I’m not sure about Cummings, as Rodgers doesn’t tend to play lesser players, that’re in dispute.
Overall, I hope, we’ll go strong, as when in the past we’ve attempted to rest players for a big game (Anderlecht, Zenit and others), it’s led to a disjointed performance, not a refreshed cohesive performance in the big game.
Fair enough, but if it does turn out to be a strong starting XI, I’d like to see key men brought off quite early once we have a nice wee goal cushion as I can see Raith doing the dirty in a game like this. Big Jeff’s physical presence could come in very handy today.
Replied to both of you, but guess what………..
I wouldn’t normally call those on here whom moderate/cancel/waste people’s time ‘wire-pullers’ but in this instance, I do and THEY ARE!
3 or 4 attempts to ‘converse’ on here about today’s game, a purported Celtic site, and the ridiculous “Awaiting for approval”? Just WTF is THAT?
Ach well, recompense because nobody give a FFF about your online discussion.
Aye, don’t get mad, get even? FN spoilt children. Huns dae that, not Tims, eTims!
I wish that ‘awaiting for approval’ garbage could be permanently removed but unfortunately I don’t think it can. It appears to be an integral and indelible part of an anti-spam mechanism inside the akismet programme where informative posts, usually of a certain length, are often treated as spam.
Anyway, sooo gutted that Daezen can’t play on Wednesday. What a player! I was also amazed at Yang’s performance, okay I know we weren’t up against very stern aopposition but his assists and goal were sheer class. I’ve been one of his biggest critis so I’m happy that he’s made me eat my words. McCowan seems to be getting better and better with every game so I’m sure he’ll also have a part to play against Bayern. Hope Bernardo is okay.
Taylor on his way out hopefully. Finally Celtic really are getting rid of the flotsam and jetsam that has holding us back for years. God knows what Zagreb see in him but good luck to him. Let’s improve the squad in the summer. Get rid of ralston next
I wonder who’s 2nd favourites for the Cup now.
That penalty they were given at the end was a disgrace. Justice was done though with yet another brilliant save from Spiders’ hero Calum Ferrie. Maybe to become a Celtic keeper in the future?
That plus two Hun corners given after the penalty being given right on the 95th minute and not being taken til the 97th.
These mens’ integrity as alleged ‘impartial officials’ must be scrutinised at the highest levels.
Oh, but it’s a great day to be a Tim!
Like every day these days 😀
Didn’t see it but sounds like a Bobby Tait performance by the ref with the same outcome.
R2gers 0 Queens Park 1
An upset for the ages.
Also seen big Conor Hazard make 2 great last minute saves for the Green Army of Plymouth Argyle to knock Liverpool out by the same score line.
Should’ve put a line on today, the bookies would’ve bitten my hand off.
Daezen Maeda’s ban has been reduced on appeal to only one game’s suspension leaving him available for tomorrow night’s mega match against Bayern at Celtic Park. Ya wee beauty! Game on.
Maeda cleared to play in both Bayern matches, our fans also allowed to attend in Munich …
What has happened a tEuropean level that we catch two lucky breaks in a row like that?
In the past they’d likely have increased DM’s ban and extended the fan lock-out by a game or two for our impertinence.
Taylor will cost the club millions. He’s Fkn garbage
In saying that schluup apart from early nerves was sure on the ball. The team showed bottle in the second half. With a stonewall penalty. Could’ve won it. They’re beatable if you don’t show them too much respect. I’d play Bernardo instead of Engels
Pretty sure Bernardo was injured although I agree with you re Engels. As for Idah! Oh dear, oh dear – cost us Kuhn’s goal and then did less in 60 minutes than Maeda in 30 when he replaced him.
Harsh.
Without Idah’s distraction, it would’ve been a comfortable save for the keeper.
Most of our players were chasing shadows for the first hour.
I hope it was genuinely us upping our game and not them prematurely downing tools that led to our revival.
Well, we’ll never know because he got himself into an offside position and killed the chance. He doesn’t have the positional awareness of Kyogo in my opinion. And what else did he contribute in an admittedly bad 60 minutes for the whole team? At least Maeda brought some urgency when he took over. Oh, and as a general criticism of BR’s team – STOP PASSING BACK ALL THE TIME!!!
Ah well, I was on a good run but ‘Awaiting for approval’ was sure to get me in the end. ;(
After being outclassed in the first half we showed a gutsy spirited performance in the second to rattle them and I honestly think we deserved something from this game. Daezen was immense yet again and credit to Yang’s efforts when he came on. We definitely had the upper hand for large spells of the last 45 mins but it was disappointing to let in those two goals through defensive errors. One thing that should be mentioned though is that we had to contend with a dreadful refereeing display where practically nothing was going our way. In fact, an unbelievable decision to give a corner in Bayern’s favour led to their second goal.
Yeah, ref was dreadful, lightning fast to give them contentious decisions and then took ages to award us obvious ones.
I though Kuhn was the only one who showed up in the first half and was genuinely able to live at their level.
I know it’s a tough gig, but McGregor was disappointing a lot of time when he received the ball in clear space but rather than turn and progress, he played ‘safe’ balls back to less talented team-mates that invited a heavy press and usually leading to trouble.
Yep, hopefully more lessons will have been learnt and we can at least compete and do ourselves proud in the return leg.
I seem to be completely out of kilter re Daizen playing through the middle.
Hopefully, game time given to the likes of Scales, Murray, Kenny etc, as we’ll likely need all hands to the pump on Tuesday.
Schlupp, Jeffrey, the Grand Auld Team and me.
You know it makes sense.
Here’s the thing, if we do sign a multi-million replacement for Kyogo in the summer, what happens to Idah? Back to being a £9 million bench warmer?
