I think what might be our biggest problem wasn’t really addressed in the podcast
The ref for this game has dished out 62 yellow and 4 reds in ten games this season.!!!! Sooooo whats the odds we will be on the wrong side of over zealous officiating yet again.

Not listened to the pod, as I’ve mislaid my ear trumpet. 😉

Unfortunately, CCV is missing tonight, which will be the 6th out of 13 Champs League that he’s missed and that’s really disappointing for one of our top players.

Also, he’s played in 44, 39 and 31 games over his time here, which is a worrying trend, so is he on a downward spiral, fitness wise, or can he recover and be a near ever-present, like in his first season?

In Trusty we trust.

Perhaps, for the first time this season, we’ll see a ceiling on our progress but, unless its a hammering, then the good times will roll on.

Blue Peter Beeb Scotland hurting with shoe-horning Huns into a ‘Borussia Dortmund v Celtic: Pre-match stats’ item and usual grudge-bearing Tom English.

Hopefully, we can put on a performance and get a result, that will have their already tripping faces to tip over.

What a shambles tonight. Couldn’t string two passes together. Abysmal.

That high pressure played right into Dortmund’s hands, so comfortable on the ball and one pass out to the midfield and we were at sixes and sevens.

Oh no, real horror show. We’ve seen this movie before.

TBH I was expecting a bit of a torrid time, as we’ve not really been tested this season, even against Slovan. Perhaps an easy 3-0 beating but not this bad.

The question is what do we do about it, completely change our approach, even for just these games, or continue doing the same, hoping that we’ll get better.

Personally, I think, we need to accept that we cannot compete against the elite clubs in Europe but that still leaves a helluva lot of ones that we can.

Zagreb, Brugge and Young Boys are the immediate ones that we need to be targetting 5-9 points from and anything from Atlanta, Leipzig and Villa will be a bonus.

Although it probably seems underwhelming, I’d like to see our sparkling domestic form continue on Sunday against Rossco, as continuing to improve there will see our Euro confidence and performance inch forward.

Not very exciting and probably more painful bumps along the way but I don’t see an ultra-defensive approach as being a realistic alternative.

Decent comment Cha, pretty much as usual!
I put last night down to a one-off where we got everything wrong and they got everything right.
It was absolutely FN brutal to watch. It looked like if we’d had a plan we left it on the flight, but serious shit happens. Re-group, take 3 pts up North and hope TF CCV is ready for Atalanta. Trusty was clueless but I’d give him some time. TBH, only player I felt played a decent game was Liam Scales and Valle looked okay when he came on. It’s fitba, it happens, NEXT!
PS I don’t ‘do’ podcasts so it’s “Awaiting approval” and still will be until my comment from last eTims match report. And I’ve removed the “for” as it’s just FN styoooopid!

Also, meant to say, it’s only a defeat with the same consequences as 3-2 would have so just let it go and hope TF never to have to witness anything like it again…..EVER!

Ugly viewing last night. Whatever plan we did have failed, and we failed to adjust or change the plan to stop the drubbing. It was clear after 25 minutes we had to do something very different to what we were doing, yet we continued. Rodgers has to review the game and the approach to “big” team away games in Europe. We are too often on the end of a hiding to be bad luck. I agree with Tic Toc that this is one to quickly forget, move on get some points, rebuild some confidence and prepare for the next game in Italy with a different kind of plan. I think I would abandon pressing these top end teams from the pass out and allow them to come to the halfway line and start there. Fill our half with our players and make it more difficult to get though two blocks of four with Daizen on the halfway line ready to break.

The trouble with that is that, according to his press conference after the game, BR has no intention of changing his approach in the next games. His track record of large hidings in Europe each season using these tactics suggests an arrogance that could be his downfall.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you but we probably know enough by now that Rodgers won’t alter his approach.

Its a feature of (modern?) management, Postecoglu has faced criticism in his early days with us, in Europe and recently with Spurs but has always insisted he’s not going to change.

I get the idea that playing the same way consistently will lead to improvement and, although this will lead to punishment beatings from the elite, it should make us better equipped to take on teams at our level.

Of course, he could also be sending a signal to the board that we need more quality signings. For all the feelgood factor at the end of the window, we effectively only added the cover of Trusty and Valle and that’s never going to be enough to make a significant improvement in Europe.

We also turned a sizable profit again despite being cash rich, so the money’s there but is the will?

I hear you Cha and there are clubs in Europe to continue practicing the Rodgers approach. There are others who really need to be treated differently. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result against big euro teams is failing.

BB, I tried to reply, same thing twice and guess what………….Aye, “Awaiting for approval” twice. It’s nonsensical and infuriating. Moderation I get but comments just being hooked and gone forever? Aargh!

I now do a screen grab of any failing comment and post it as an Image (bottom right of comment box).

Not as good as an allowed comment but hopefully allows the discussion to continue.

Thanks Cha, I’ll try that. I did try ‘print screen’ on my laptop and attempted to paste that, but nothing happened. I also noted, as you said, that you can click on the image (as you’ve posted) and it enlarges it to make it readable. Preposterous to have to ‘negotiate’ a site in this manner. FFS someone, take note. Otherwise Owen’s point about no eTimmers (all sick of interference) will certainly come to pass. Come on Bhoys……

I agree with that but I don’t think we’re doing it to get better against the elite clubs but for when we compete against our rivals eg Zagreb etc.

The counter-argument is that if we keep changing our approach then we won’t improve our Plan A.

For me, the acid test will be how we finish the group. I think we were the 27th seed and, given our relatively favourable draw (although Villa as a ‘bottom’ team isn’t kind) then we’ve got to be targetting a knock-out place (top 24).

That for me represents tangible progress, even if we take more punishment beatings from the likes of Atalanta and Villa.

That’s probably ‘thin gruel’ for some people, perhaps even unacceptable but, I think its where we’re at.

BB, on your earlier comment, I see absolute sense in not pressing so far forward. I also think we should quit playing out from the back a lot of the time. We’re not good at doing it and it puts us under all kinds of (self-inflicted) trouble. It’s a nerve-shredder for both team and supporters. If our ‘keeper puts the ball into the opponent’s half we’ll win SOME of them and create chances. The others we’ll be able to defend far better as we’ll be facing play. When we go charging forward, a simple through ball or over the top to someone like Adeyemi and we’re done for! Obversely, we’ve got fast, decent players like Maeda, Kyogo and Kuhn who can latch onto that type of ball. Anyway, yesterday’s gone, let’s hope for some enlightened thinking from Brendan, or just cancel out stupid, avoidable errors and give Atalanta a hefty boot in their royal albert halls.

Off topic consideration. Just wonder how some of our eTims comrades are doing. Comrades like Mike (the farmer), Big Monti, WeeRed (Cliftonville and US), Charlie and Charlie Saiz. We’ve had our differences historically and those differences should be history. Please excuse any omittances, not intentional, just trying to catch up.

ETims …
Now sadly gone from a Caption Competition to a place where posters must photograph and copy their messages to keep the conversation going …

It is a tragedy in my eyes, a true heartbreaker, and all because no one on the admin staff can be bothered trying to make a few tweaks to this ridiculously outdated infuriating set up.

For it’s not like computers were just invented 10 years ago, you know, and you can’t keep an audience if the most innocuous word in a post keeps throwing them off.

Personally I now Copy every post I send then seek out the ‘offending’, (otherwise wholly innocuous word) , should it fail to pass moderation, as the text cannot be clearly distinguished on the photos, if distinguished at all, unless someone explains to the receiver how to retranslate it so that it is legible through a series of steps that are basically simple but may well do ne’er do well against an ageing mind.

A once great site, now dilapidating sadly, amidst the never ending relentless brutality of this evil, ever evil, ‘brave new world’ they have now thrust upon us, the lost and forgotten forge pigeon amongst the debris of the last days.

All this and all this while my wife has arthritis and I suffer from terrible piles and I only hope the good Lord can forgive us for our stupidity on this Earth and perhaps many others, seen and unseen, and that all will be taken care of, as it’s a bit shite now.

Nawrocki should’ve played. Should’ve played with two holding midfielders. Also Kuhn has to do better where he is almost 1 on 1. Great ball my hatate who is better than Bernardo by a country mile

Hatate did nothing today (nor did Engels). More drive when Bernardo and MacCowan replaced them.

I was hoping for another sparkling performance and result as, I beliuueve, that’s the only way to elevate our game to be competitive in Europe.

Howver, a battling performance and result, shows another aspect that will be needed at stages this season.

Agreed sometimes winning in a different way will fit the occasion. A tough game as it turned out and 3 points in the bag.

From Beeb Gossip

“The rules must have changed,” quipped Sky Sports pundit and ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd as Nicolas Kuhn of Celtic avoided a second yellow card for joining the crowd in his goal celebrations. (Football Scotland), external

Responding to Boyd’s comments, former referee Bobby Madden used social media to point out such action was “removed as mandatory caution over a decade ago”, while sharing clips of similar celebrations. (Daily Record)

Who would’ve thought it would be Madhun that would be the one to apply the now ritual slapdown to Boyd
