Celtic Diary Tuesday June 6: Here We Go Again

Since the last appearance of the diary, quite a lot has happened, and it’s fair to say some of it has been good, very good, in fact, and some of it, well,

Not-good-bad GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

The good stuff…a world record breaking eighth treble, a clean sweep of the domestic honours largely playing football the Celtic way. A team built from the ashes of the Second Lennon Era in the image of the great teams of the past, a joy to watch and one which held great hopes for the future.

And then, even as the treble was being secured, this image flashed up on the telly…..

Image

Which told us that all was not well.

And now we know that Lawwell told Postecoglou he would never , ever interfere with his work….

LAWWELL'S DOUBLE CELEBRATION | Celtic Quick News

We’ll come to that later.

Within hours Tottenham Hotspur, a football club and not a bloke in a cape from one of the marvel comics, had swept him away to the bright lights of old London town, promising the earth ….and he believed them.

At the time of writing, he hasn’t signed, though to be fair I can’t be arsed checking, and anyway, if he doesn’t join them it’s unlikely he’ll be back at Celtic .

Something changed his mind about our club, that’s beyond doubt, although to be fair he was spot on when he told hacks that they would be surprised how long he’d be at this club.

I certainly fucking was, as it turned out.

The current view amongst fans is that Ange, no, bollocks, Postecoglou is a bit of a rat. Similar to the original Antrim rat who left under a blanket when he had declared undying love at the feet of Danny McGrain, who would later tell us that was all a load of shite as well.

But, as hands at the ranch realise the Diary was merely taking a break and not fully retiring, certain things have come to light that would have come to light if the fat lazy bastard who types this guff had been paying attention.

We’ll try to make some sense of things that have happened while I’ve been away.

Some of what we found out is undoubtedly true. some may be partly true, and the rest, as is our wont when putting this stuff out there, is entirely made up.

Anything that draws the attention of anyone’s legal team, is , of course, the bits that are entirely made up.

And Lawwell especially is aware of this, as when he offered us a few titbits to increase hits, I told hi we just make everything up anyway.

As we don’t carry adverts, which means you can read our stuff uninterrupted, “hits ” are not why we do this.

Though admittedly it would be stretching it a bit to declare we are searching for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

From the outside, it looked very much like the manager was being allowed to build the team he wanted, with complete and absolute support from the board.

That meant he was able to dismiss any talk of moving south with relative ease, which meant that although his chum Scott Munn was getting the director of football job at Tottenham, it didn’t really matter.

Ange was happy, his family were happy and anything else could wait.

And that sense of security allowed him to persuade others to join him. Would the asian players have travelled halfway round the world to join him if he wasn’t convinced himself ?

Would they have joined him if they didn’t believe in him ?

With south Korean striker Oh and Japanese player of the year Iwata joining in January, we can reasonably deduce things were going well up until then.

So why would he have hos agent touting him for a job down south just a couple of months later ?

Some suggestions of interference from board level caused him to hesitate on a new, improved contract, and that hesitation later turned to rejection.

The tipping point appears to be the new contract handed to Scott Bain, who Postecoglou promptly played against Hibs, who then promptly flung a couple into his own net.

Postecoglou didn;t want to keep Bain, largely becuase he isn’t very good, and in that one game sort of proved his point.

Let’s be honest, we were all surprised when Bain signed a new deal.

Bain was probably surprised when he was offered one.

Postecoglou didn’t offer him it.

So who did ? And why ?

Hither, Page by Cat Sebastian – Not Now, I'm Reading

Was that the final straw, or the first one ?

Or was it the result of the board deciding to take back control ?

Things accelerated after the St Mirren game, it seems, and the players have known since then they would have a new manager at the end of the season.

A deal was agreed between Tottenham and Frank Strimboli, the agent of Postecoglou, which was left on the table until the former wizard of Aus could sign it with a clear conscience that he’d at least left us in better shape than he found us, and done what he said he would do until he felt he could do no more.

And that, as they say, is that .

Here we are again, looking for another manager, albeit we are in a healthier state than when we usually look for one.

Although that in itself means it’s becoming a regular feature of our club.

Manager’s can’t work with our board, or at least with one or more of them.

Can’t figure out which one.

Can you ?

As for a replacement, we’ve all got our own personal favourite.

Brendan Rodgers has apparently ruled himself out…he hasn’t, by the way, and one wonders if he is seeking a guarantee that he won’t have to defer to the board every time he makes a decision.

Scott Brown will be sitting by the phone, and whilst he is a Celtic legend, and certainly wouldn’t leave if he was approached by southern clubs, the fear it’s too soon for him is far, far outweighed by the fact that he would not stand up to board interference, at least not at first.

We will be able to work out what has gone on when big names turn us down….people in the game talk, and if we have just lost one of the best managers in the modern game because someone behind closed doors tried to, er, take back control, then we really are waist deep in something the dog left behind.

And sadly, I can’t shake that thought this morning.

And I’ll tell you for why, shall I ?

In the late sixties and seventies, Celtic were a force feared and respected throughout Europe, which more or less ended after the 1974 european cup semi final, a tie Celtic should ahve and would have won if Atletico Madrid had not adopted a robust and enthusiastic style.

With one of the top managers at the helm, we were still competing at the highest level despite selling the core of the side, none of whom wanted to leave but felt undervalued.

This culminated in the loss of Kenny Dalglish, the star of the show, to Liverpool, who built their side around him and dominated Europe for a few years after that.

Within twenty years , the board that had dismantled that side had almost dismantled the club as well.

Whilst our board have admirably kept things in a way that means that won;t happen again, they have failed to get the club back onto the elite clubs list, and one suspects, especially given their reluctance to totally withdraw from the tainted Old Firm brand, there is a worry that they are happy enough to remain a big fish in a small pond.

We had a manager who had the ability to get this club noticed again, to build towards respect on the continent, and we let him go.

We’ve just turned the wrong way during a pivotal moment on our history, and like liverpool before them tottenham…neither deserve a capital letter….will benefit.

Time will tell, but I’ve a feeling that Tottenham , if they allow him to do what he wants the way he wants to, may go on to have an unprecedented high spot in their history.

They might even win something.

It’s easy to say that Postecoglou went for saxon gold, but that never struck me as his raison d’etre ( It’s French…look it up. I had to. )

He struck me as someone who loved his football, and the money was just a bonus.

He struck me as someone who felt he had landed on his feet at Celtic, at least until someone pushed him over.

Whilst there is no name on a door in the ground that is bigger than the one on the door outside it, we’ve made an arse of this.

And the problem is, the people who made an arse of this are the ones in a position to make an arse of the next appointment.

An interesting theory and I’ve no doubt your finger is more on the pulse than mine. But I’m not buying it. The only thing Lawwell hasn’t been accused of is creating Covid. I don’t believe he’s that much of an evil genius. Ange definitely had control of the playing side, as you say yourself these Asian players didn’t come halfway round the world because the board fancied them.
So why would the board then decide they were taking back control? And despite what we think about some players I don’t believe that Bain or any player would sign a new contract if he knew the manager didn’t want him.
It would be more likely that Bain knowing Ange didn’t fancy him signed a new deal because he knew Ange wouldn’t be there next season. Dermot Desmond doesn’t spend the day talking to the manager very often, for him to do that doesn’t suggest that he was telling him, by the way you are no longer in charge of recruitment. Not buying it.
Ange was great for us, took us to new levels but he always struck me as a very ambitious manager, the kind who wanted to test himself in the EPL. Just look at his comments when Juranovic left.
Ange worked his ticket, good luck to him, he left probably 2 seasons too soon to be considered a legend. We’ll survive, we still have a big advantage over Sevco but we need to get the new appointment correct.

I don’t buy the narrative that this is all on the board. AP has often stated his aim is to manage at the highest level, not just for himself but also for the reputation of Australian football. Badge kissing and chest thumping are part of the entertainment, not a declaration of undying love. More money, more exposure, life outside the goldfish bowl with more money to spend (in a city built for the wealthy) than you can shake a stick at and a 3rd string goalkeeper was the thing! He was an employee who worked hard to get a gig that suited him better. He never loved the club because it wasn’t his club. If he had been rubbish we would have chased him and hounded the board for not binning him. His decision is a no brainer for anyone but a Celtic fan.

I’d love to see your evidence for that and would pick it up and run with it.
As a shareholder I have rights, and I know all about them.
If Lawwell’s involved here he’s breaking all sorts of rules; he’s not THAT dumb. He’d do it secretively but with the major shareholder in full agreement. Just like the 5(6)-way agreement. It’s just the PROOF that’s missing. But this isn’t over.

I’ll admit…I never associated Lawwell with Ange leaving…I genuinely just assumed that “ambition”
( more money and higher profile) was his reason for moving on…and so to read your article came as an eye-opener for me….and explained your “Here we go again ” headline.
If you are correct …then to say I’m really pissed off is a huge understatement.
I have absolutely no time for Lawwell…He has proved by his inactions on certain important matters that he is not trustworthy…and he is the main reason I gave up my cherished season ticket.
To think that he is “interfering” again in the football side of things is totally unacceptable and needs nipped in the bud….now !!
As for Ange…
Well obviously he gets our overwhelming thanks for everything he achieved in such a short space of time…But looking back…I could have done without the “interaction” with the support… which at times suggested he was going to be here for a long time…and has proved to be something else.
So on that basis ..can I ask that the new manager just gets on with the job…and forgets about fist pumping …hand clapping…and any other cosmetic gesture that takes his fancy.
Thanks for your good article…food for thought.

Remember his comments when Juranovic left, something along the lines of ” he never really hit the big time till late in his career and he just wants to maximise his opportunities and to be honest I agree with him”. He was always going to go to that fucking bastard of a league given the opportunity as will the next manager and the next fans favourite players. Get used to it. Stepping stone FC.

There are a lot of of if buts and maybes in that article, it’s your gig you can write what you want. But to be honest, no one knows what if anything from the Celtic Board changed or changed Ange’s attitude to it. Could it be solely that his agent was touting him everywhere and with an ‘in’ at Spurs, while not guaranteeing a job, certainly would have got him noticed at least. I don’t believe that Ange will be a success at Spurs (winning the League etc.) not because he’s not a good manager/coach, he is just that Spurs have to contend with 5 or 6 Clubs on Arab/Russian/American blood money and money buys you success, Spurs just don’t have it. He might win a League Cup or so if he’s given the time and that is something which Spurs and Premier League managers are never given!
As to the panto villain Lawwell interfering, again there’s nothing other than he’s done it before and he’ll do it again, he’s the Chairman, who has little day to day clout in a football club, it’s Desmond and Nicholson, not Lawwell. We’ll know soon enough as all sorts of experts will crawl out of the woodwork with their ‘I told you so’ stories. mostly made up.

Been waiting patiently waiting for the Diary to return. For the first time really disappointed in the Diary as very negative and hearsay. . Its all about opinions and will be back tomorrow, when hopefully it make me laughs.

I personally have no clue how it came to this but it was great time with Ange. Can anyone say they wouldn’t change job if they got offered 500% higher salary, never mind all the other attractions of the EPL. They come and hopefully because they’re so successful, Rodgers, Ange they go. The alternative is we sack the manager. Thanks Ange, good luck at Spurs.

More interesting, who’s next. One name not mentioned is right here in Alkmaar. Pascal Jansen. This year Conference League semi-final, always competitive teams against Ajax. Feyenoord and PSV, great transfer record, knows how to make young players successful, English mum, wants a move to UK.

Knowing your influence Mr Malph could you check if he is on the list please.

Not sure if i agree with the article. If you actually look at how Ange has acted with his other clubs before he joined us, its pretty much the same pattern and also very similar statements.

I think we were ultimately a stepping stone for Ange. A great coach and leader but ultimately someone who has always wanted more.

Definitely agree, Celtic were used as a springboard for entry to the epl, hence the rolling one year contract. IF its true that compensation will be many times more than AP’s contracted amount, well, as J.Forest ( THECELTICBLOG ) stated earlier that could be spurs paying extra to keep them away from any tribunal courts for tapping our manager…
The time scale seems to indicate that WAS the case.

The ex-manager always spoke of ambition and not getting attached to people, no different for him in that regard, he had ambitions of managing in the EPL and no matter what we think, he was never getting a bigger club than Spurs coming for him (only asked as everyone else said no) unless he won a European trophy such as the EL. He’s 57 and this is his chance to get on the merry-go-round. I don’t think there are any other reasons than that for him leaving.

If Ange didn’t approve the Bain extended contract, who did?

It would certainly appear that interference was going on and smacks of similar events during Rogers’ time.

Think it the squad for the champions league so many home grown players must be included in the squad.

Angera is over and its post-ecoglou time.

I always thought his age was both a blessing and a curse, either too old to have a crack at the EPL or, if he did get an offer, it was ‘now or never’.

Its disappointing that he’s not stayed to have at least 1 more crack at the CL, where for all the positivity around our play, shots on goal etc, we still ended up with only 2 points (our lowest ever?).

Shakhtar and Leipzig are the types of team we should be looking to crack but the former kept us at bay comfortably and the latter overcame us with relative ease.

Would next season, have been any different, with largely the same players or additions of similar eg we still seem to be scouting others’ castoffs, low millions and not the next level type of player required that cost £5-10m, perhaps even over that in exceptional cases.

That’s what the top Dutch and Portuguese teams now do, as they spend up to £20m but sell for over £50m.

We seem to stuck in the same low-level risk-adverse strategy that will see us largely lord it over the latest Ibrox iteration and set more ‘wee world’ records that won’t resonate outside.

I can’t see us keeping our top managers and players for more than 2 years with that strategy.

Bain’s signing is clearly to cover the european requirements – we only had just enough to make the 8 last year. With any or all of Welsh, Ralston and Turnbull leaving, we’re going to be thin on the ground, with not many coming through to replace – Vata, maybe Murray or Montgomery. Bain’s an easy one to keep – someone whose job is just to be there.

The rest is just denial. Occam’s razor: he never stays anywhere for more than a few seasons and he’s been offered the biggest job of his career after 2 at us.

His agent was talking him up to premier league clubs?! Say it ain’t so Joe! He’s going to be 58 by the start of next season and his stock has never been higher, of course his agent was pushing. Then we catch some bad luck; Spurs are in chaos and they had to move down their shortlist to get someone in. Remind you of anything?

I wouldn’t trust our board to run a bath, and I’m very worried about what comes next for that reason, but there’s no way that they’ve pushed him out, it’s 2+2 = 5 stuff. He’s ambitious and he left, like he was always going to if he got the right offer. It was good for us and it was good for him. And if he comes back with that reported £30M for Kyogo, it’ll be even better again.

It will all end in tears for Ange. Spurs have gone through four managers in four years and I can see him being back on the market long before his four year contract is up. The much hyped ‘Premiership’ is a poisoned chalice which spits out talent on a regular basis. Now we just have to wait to find out who Peter spoke to in the Hampden showers after the cup final!

Owen, I replied to you earlier in a positive fashion. The comment appeared but now seems to have vanished? There’s been no “Awaiting for moderation” crap but my reply to you has gone. I don’t know why.
Anyway, your comment echoes, almost verbatim, what I messaged my family with.
Celtic FC is better than ANY man and, IMHO, Ange will only understand going south in terms of going ‘tits up’ is his most likely outcome now.

There is something not right at Paradise, the Eddie Howe saga a prime example, other issues that do not add up, why give Bain an extended contract. Ange seemed to give up after the League win and the rest is the usual history. Now they will arse about, when they should have a replacement immediately.
At least the season tickets are done, so they will be happy!
Their total interest is the saga that is Sevco, when you look at teams with a smaller budget they do far better than Celtic in Europe, wonder why?
Glad to see u back from the dead

The season ticket thing you mention is the main problem for supporters and sustenance for the Board. We need a collective, co-ordinated, refusal to renew until at least 1 month later than now in order to ensure the Board can no longer ‘pull the wool over our eyes’. It’s also imperative we get a united supporter action to get someone with executive power elected to the Board.
Supporter power is everything, FFS let’s use it.

Haven’t read Diary nor comments yet, too much (personal stuff) going on, but just my view on where we find ourselves today.
As I said in a text to family quite a few days ago, if Ange goes he goes. I think he’ll suffer the most from his decision to leave what I called him and Celtic FC being a “match made in ‘heaven'”. His experience of seeking out ‘under-valued’ players, teaching them, training them will all change. Spurs’ Levy and fans are notorious for expecting everything for very little, perhaps typical of Levy’s background? Ange will get funds he’s never dreamed of (due to EPL being ‘loaded) but I doubt he’ll know what to do with them. Without sudden and consistent improvement he’ll just become yet another North London casualty.
I reckon he’s had the best chance he’ll EVER have with us but turned his back on us.
I’ll still thank him for his near miraculous efforts with us, especially 1st year, but fear he’s heading ‘south’, so to speak.
Great to see The Diary back, will read it all as soon as poss.

The ‘let’s blame Lawwell’ mantra is a bit tired. He doesn’t run the club anymore. There’s also no need for the conspiracy theory attitude either. Ange is ambitious. His method of leaving may not please our fans but the truth is he wasn’t a Celtic fan before he arrived although he did a great job of becoming one while he was here. He got a chance at a bigger gig and he took it.

Peter Lawwell is:

A liar.

A wage thief.

A parasite.

An Ibrox-loving collaborator.

A Machiavellian maniac, who would have prospered in the court of the Borgias.

…and that’s just his good points. Never, repeat never, should this dangerous clown have set foot in Paradise ever again.

Oh, aye… welcome back.

ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC and well-thought-out comment with which I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve covered most of that ground (above) many times in many comments but:
“A Machiavellian maniac, who would have prospered in the court of the Borgias.” is just class: pure, unadulterated CLASS. Brilliant, Pal.

For me, Ange left us way better than what he had to deal with initially.
I hope you are wrong in your assertion that it was PL and that board that caused this.
Ange Postecoglou has ambitions and he can’t waste time, for me that’s IT.
The reason he chucked it IS his ambition that has tempted him away. NOTHING ELSE.

“The tipping point appears to be the new contract handed to Scott Bain, who Postecoglou promptly played against Hibs, who then promptly flung a couple into his own net.

Postecoglou didn;t want to keep Bain, largely becuase he isn’t very good, and in that one game sort of proved his point.

Let’s be honest, we were all surprised when Bain signed a new deal.”
——————————-

From all the made up fish you’ve produced over the years. much of it, admittedly, written with good comic timing, this has to be the maddest thought you ever allowed yourself to commit to paper.

He’s a 3rd choice keeper FFS- who bothers with that. Name me any club’s 3rd choice keeper! That’s how important it is. Scott Bain is an internationalist and yes he made a complete howler for Hibs 3rd goal but I’ve seen all our best goalies, Boric, Forster and Gordon, do likewise. Yes I am comparing them. My comparison is they are all capable of howlers but I am not equating them. Bain is a lesser keeper than all 3 and a lesser keeper than Joe Hart, But your 2nd choice keeper has not proven himself fit or capable yet with us> I hope he does, given time cos Joe needs challenged.

Seriously< Ange wouldn’t have batted an eyelid over this and will have nodded it through. It doesn’t loom large in his thinking. You have just projected your views onto him nd it’s’ obvious when you use words like “appears” in relation to tipping point. Just be honest, that just means you think it might be a tipping point or camel/straw event. You have no evidence it upset, pleased or registered with Ange.

It is much simpler and more rational, though much less funny, to accept that Ange is going to Spurs for the same reasons Kieran went to Aresnal and even Christie went to Bournemouth. Money and a higher profile. We all think as fans we would never do this but we were never good enough to be tested, were we, so we write on blogs instead.

Scott Bain’s contract extension is a piece of meaningless fluff. Get back to being funny about meaningful stuff, please

I canna figure why Desmond loves Lawwell so much. He demands things are done his way, pished off both Brendan and Ange, who’s idea to ditch the sweaters and go with the corporate jacket? Why did Lawwell return? So here we are again, can Lawwell bring in someone half decent with a pair of balls the players can respond to, who goes and who stays and sevco are dancing and looking forward to next years treble. Some say we are fickle as supporters, not so, but in some respects we have to be as staff come and go and we and the club go on with or without them. I guess thanks Ange, we are in better shape. Was gutted, but time to get it together and move on. Bastards. O’Neill and Scott to give some guidance though he would need to be himself. or Henrik would both cheer me up no end. Would the unfaithful one win us back if offered? Brendan would have to give it 5 great years at least. All just conjecture from me. Get it right Lawwell, not a Delia or any soft touch or trouble may come. COYBIG!
