Celtic Diary Friday October 28: In The Real World

With the humdrum monotony of the Champions League all but done, it’s back to the exciting stuff this weekend, with Celtic visiting Livingston on Sunday.

Kick off is at noon, or 1pm if you forget to put your clocks back on Saturday night.

Greg Taylor, Ange’s favourite full back, ( how many clues do you want ? ) was wheeled out to talk about the game, and he said that the players will approach the game as though they were playing Real Madrid, which means at least a couple of them will have booked taxis for the airport on Saturday morning.

“The badge demands it. It is as simple as that. It does. Every game is big at a club this size and Sunday is no different because Livingston away is a difficult game.

“It is a game we will approach in the same way we do every game, treating our opposition with the utmost respect and aiming to put on a performance.

“You will see the fans when we go to Livingston. It will be like a home game for us and they will be cheering us on from minute one until 90. With the way that Europe has fallen for us this year, we want to give them something to cheer about domestically.

“They [Livingston] have shown throughout their time in the Premiership that they have got a good way of playing and they stick to it whilst all playing for each other. So we all know it is going to be difficult, but it’s a game a lot of us now have experience of and, when you get experience of occasions, domestic or Champions League, it does help.”

“If we can reach the levels we have reached in the Champions League, we will be pretty alright in the league stuff and domestic games because the level needed is really, really high.

“It is the best competition in the world, but Sunday is now the big one. Livingston has been a tough place to go throughout the years and they will be wanting to get a result. Equally, we want to do more than get a result, we also want to put on a performance for the fans.”

I’m not sure if he’s trying to convince us, or himself.

The disappointment of failure in europe will have left the players feeling a bit flat. They will have had a rude awakening about the realities of top level football, and it’s up to all concerned to get back into their stride as quickly as possible.

The prospect of domestic fare until more or less this time next year won;t be thrilling for them, and it will be interesting to see f they can pick up the pieces and keep progressing.

Livingston away has been a bit of a nightmare over the last few seasons, but the players did seem to get a handle on it eventually, Celtic won 3-1 back in March after a succession of draws , with Maeda and Forrest goals sandwiching an own goal for the hoops.

James Forrest has come into the side and seems to have got his mojo back, and that can only be a bonus, as he’s been through the disappointment of European exits before.

Lots of times, come to think of it.

With Kyogo Fuhruhashi not delivering the goods, will he continue to be played in a supporting role with Georgios Giakoumakis as the target man ?

With Ange Postecoglou telling us he won’t alter the way we play and us all believing him, it’s curious to see one or two tweaks, such as Aron Mooy playing on the right against Shakhtar, largely to cover for the wandering Juranovic who seems to have lost a bit of discipline ( another clue ) but in fact merely getting in the way of the re-invigorated Forrest.

The manager has also said that the signings of Abildgaard and Bernebei were made with an eye on introducing them in the second half of the season, are we about to see another couple of, er, tweaks.

The idea we will play the same way is linked to the We Never Stop mantra, the reality is we will, and are making adjustments to the all out attacking style.

Had we ever been in a position to close out a game in Europe, we would have.

As I’ve said before, these things take time, and we will have to be patient,.

We’ve all got our own ideas on who we should play and how we should play them, but we need to remember there’s still a wee bit of trial and error, and we’re always going to have players off form or injured.

what our manager seems to be trying to do is cover all the bases, and that’s a lot of bases.

One or two replies on Twitter have suggested that the gates weren’t closed the other night after kick off against Shakhtar, but I’ve had a couple of messages suggesting that in fact it’s happened a couple of times.

John Paul Taylor hasn’t replied to the question yet, and there have been claims he didn’t reply the last time either when others complained.

But I’m sure he will.

Elsewhere, and the Scotsman says the Daily Mirror says that Celtuic and “rangers ” are being targeted by the European super League sides…those ones who wanted to break away from UEFA to set up their own league which would attract quite a bit of money, most likely at the expense of UEFA, which is why they went to court to stop them.

The Daily Mirror is claiming that the Glasgow duo may be approached by the principal clubs of the European Super League – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – as they are becoming increasingly frustrated by their breakaway battle from UEFA.

The aforementioned trio are locked in a court battle with European football’s governing body over its alleged control and monopoly of the game, with a verdict expected to be delivered in December.

Interestingly, Barcelona and Juventus are bith out of thius seasons Champions League, and Real Madrid haven’t had it all their way either.

However, the reports suggest that regardless of the outcome, the European Super League wants to press ahead with a breakaway league and could ask Celtic and Rangers to join due to their fanbase and marketability. It would also mean, though, that no English clubs would likely join and be replaced by other clubs in northern Europe, such as Ajax. It is unclear whether such a plan would get off the ground, however.

The latest Super League proposal fell apart last year after widespread criticism and fan unrest.

Hang on, they want “rangers ” because of their fanbase ?

Rangers fans warned club could face UEFA ban over sectarian chants - Daily Record

Of course they do.

More likely the Ibrox club have contacted them in the hope they will be allowed to join, thus escaping the prying eyes of UEFA who keep interfering with their unique financial model.

This kind of ties in with reports earlier in the week that there are rumours of a takeover at Ibrox….

From the Record, presumably via Dave King

Kyle Fox Rangers takeover price floated as football finance

expert values club at £100m

The American businesswoman is keen to invest and could launch a bid to a buy a 25 per cent stake in the club.

The term ” Expert ” is being stretched a bit here, as we will see.

A football finance expert has valued Rangers at £100m, but Kyle Fox thinks she could complete a takeover for £25m.

The American businesswoman announced her intention to buy a controlling 75 per cent stake in the club earlier this year after a meeting with former director Paul Murray. Chairman Douglas Park and his fellow board members have resisted attempts so far, and launched legal action against Fox and company KRF Capital over an alleged potential breach of trademark.

However, the Ibrox club walked away from the case, which reginited Fox’s takeover desire. She said she was keen to “explore opportunities” for investment in the club, with a revised plan to buy 25 per cent stake, which would make her the club’s biggest individual shareholder. Now Kieran Maguire, author of the Price of Football , believes Fox could achieve that for £25million. That’s a quarter of what he values Rangers at, although Fox would still have to convince existing shareholders to sell.

“The asking price was probably in the region of 25p per share, minimum. If someone wanted to acquire all of those, you’d have to offer a premium,” he told Football Insider.

“Rangers’ market value is probably just over £100m at this point. If Fox wants to take control, it’s going to have to be a lucrative and persuasive offer to encourage shareholders to give up their investment in the club. Some of their connections to the club are based on finance and some of it is based on emotion.”

The word “probably ” occurs quite a lot in that assessment, which means it’s not really an assessment,

What would have made the article worthwhile would have been a mention of the accounts, for example is the club vulnerable to a takeover, or is it ripe for development ?

And on what market are the shares valued at 25p each ?

And how does the “expert ” arrive at the £100m valuation ?

A strange article, though no doubt we’ll soon find out why it’s been planted.

Sleek Round Knobs Satin Nickel 30mm 2 Pack | Cabinet Knobs | Screwfix.com

This week, we’re going to award it to a composite character, a fictional creation that represents thousands, maybe even millions of people who all have a certain characteristic that means they qualify as exponents of top level knobbery.

Our man is a Brexit voting immigrant hating sort of fellow, or lass, who wants to keep Britain white , bring back capital punishment and dreams of the days of yore when Britain ruled the waves, as opposed to these days when she merely waives the rules.

Even though his own ancestors would have worked in the pits for sixteen hours a day, or in the mills , or up the chimney, for some reason he imagines that he was a great seafaring captain, or the sort of intrepid explorer who ended up being in charge of a country where everyone had much darker skin and he could keep them in their place.

the kind of person who thinks that Boris Johnson is just like them, a guy who does his best under trying and difficult circumstances, and he knows that because the Sun and the Daily Mail told him so.

Of course, now he’s moaning that there’s a brown person in charge in Britain and he’s a little confused as to how that happened when he wanted to ban them all, which was why he voted for Brexit, even though Europe isn’t in Asia.

In his mind he’s experiencing his worst nightmare…the foreigners have taken over….and he voted for it.

He feels betrayed, but all that has happened is one self serving Tory has replaced another….they manufacture them somewhere near Eton and market them through Fleet Street and the BBC.

And they come in all sorts of colours and sizes. Though some do last longer than others, they’re pretty much all poor quality.

Which in my book makes our man a bit of a knob.

Why ?

Because he still hasn’t learned his lesson. He still judges people on appearances, when in fact….

Video – Tommy Sheridan's rousing Willie Maley message to Celtic supporters around the world

And thats why this week, millions of people have been awarded

Perhaps it’s just me. and believe me, these days there is precious little to laugh about, but pardon me for smiling when i think of our man, and millions like him, who found out this week that irony can be pretty ironic sometimes.

Ayr Utd go all in and spare no expense with their re-enactment of Tam O’Shanter

When chapman billies leave the street,
And drouthy neebors, neebors meet,
As market-days are wearing late,
An’ folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
And getting fou and unco’ happy,
We think na on the lang Scots miles,
The mosses, waters, slaps and styles,
That lie between us and our hame,
Whare sits our sulky sullen dame,
Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.
This truth fand honest Tam o’ Shanter,
As he frae Ayr ae night did canter,
(Auld Ayr, wham ne’er a town surpasses,
For honest men and bonny lasses.)
Tam! hadst thou but been sae wise,
As ta’en thy ain wife Kate’s advice!
She taul thee weel thou was a skellum,
A blethering, blustering, drunken blellum;
That frae November till October,
Ae market-day thou was nae sober;
That ilka melder, wi’ the miller,
Thou sat as lang as thou had siller;
That every naig was ca’d a shoe on,
The smith and thee gat roaring fou on;
That at the L—d’s house, even on Sunday,
Thou drank wi’ Kirkton Jean till Monday.
She prophesied that late or soon,
Thou would be found deep drown’d in Doon;
Or catch’d wi’ warlocks in the mirk,
By Alloway’s auld haunted kirk.
Ah, gentle dames! it gars me greet,
To think how mony counsels sweet,
How mony lengthen’d sage advices,
The husband frae the wife despises!
But to our tale: Ae market-night,
Tam had got planted unco right;
Fast by an ingle, bleezing finely,
Wi’ reaming swats, that drank divinely;
And at his elbow, Souter Johnny,
His ancient, trusty, drouthy crony;
Tam lo’ed him like a vera brither;
They had been fou for weeks thegither.
The night drave on wi’ sangs and clatter;
And ay the ale was growing better:
The landlady and Tam grew gracious,
Wi’ favours, secret, sweet, and precious:
The Souter tauld his queerest stories;
The landlord’s laugh was ready chorus:
The storm without might rair and rustle,
Tam did na mind the storm a whistle.
Care, mad to see a man sae happy,
E’en drown’d himsel amang the nappy:
As bees flee hame wi’ lades o’ treasure,
The minutes wing’d their way wi’ pleasure;
Kings may be blest, but Tam was glorious,
O’er a’ the ills o’ life victorious!
But pleasures are like poppies spread,
You seize the flower, its bloom is shed;
Or like the snow falls in the river,
A moment white—then melts for ever;
Or like the borealis race,
That flit ere you can point their place;
Or like the rainbow’s lovely form
Evanishing amid the storm.—
Nae man can tether time or tide;
The hour approaches Tam maun ride;
That hour, o’ night’s black arch the key-stane,
That dreary hour he mounts his beast in;
And sic a night he taks the road in,
As ne’er poor sinner was abroad in.
The wind blew as ’twad blawn its last;
The rattling showers rose on the blast;
The speedy gleams the darkness swallow’d;
Loud, deep, and lang, the thunder bellow’d:
That night, a child might understand,
The Deil had business on his hand.
Weel mounted on his gray mare, Meg,
A better never lifted leg,
Tam skelpit on thro’ dub and mire,
Despising wind, and rain, and fire;
Whiles holding fast his gude blue bonnet;
Whiles crooning o’er some auld Scots sonnet;
Whiles glowring round wi’ prudent cares,
Lest bogles catch him unawares:
Kirk-Alloway was drawing nigh,
Whare ghaists and houlets nightly cry.—
By this time he was cross the ford,
Whare, in the snaw, the chapman smoor’d;
And past the birks and meikle stane,
Whare drunken Charlie brak’s neck-bane;
And thro’ the whins, and by the cairn,
Whare hunters fand the murder’d bairn;
And near the thorn, aboon the well,
Whare Mungo’s mither hang’d hersel.—
Before him Doon pours all his floods;
The doubling storm roars thro’ the woods;
The lightnings flash from pole to pole;
Near and more near the thunders roll:
When, glimmering thro’ the groaning trees,
Kirk-Alloway seem’d in a bleeze;
Thro’ ilka bore the beams were glancing;
And loud resounded mirth and dancing.—
Inspiring bold John Barleycorn!
What dangers thou canst make us scorn!
Wi’ tippeny, we fear nae evil;
Wi’ usquabae, we’ll face the devil!—
The swats sae ream’d in Tammie’s noddle,
Fair play, he car’d na deils a boddle.
But Maggie stood right sair astonish’d,
Till, by the heel and hand admonish’d,
She ventured forward on the light;
And, vow! Tam saw an unco sight!
Warlocks and witches in a dance;
Nae cotillion brent new frae France,
But hornpipes, jigs, strathspeys, and reels,
Put life and mettle in their heels.
A winnock-bunker in the east,
There sat auld Nick, in shape o’ beast;
A towzie tyke, black, grim, and large,
To gie them music was his charge:
He screw’d the pipes and gart them skirl,
Till roof and rafters a’ did dirl.—
Coffins stood round, like open presses,
That shaw’d the dead in their last dresses;
And by some devilish cantraip slight
Each in its cauld hand held a light.—
By which heroic Tam was able
To note upon the haly table,
A murderer’s banes in gibbet airns;
Twa span-lang, wee, unchristen’d bairns;
A thief, new-cutted frae a rape,
Wi’ his last gasp his gab did gape;
Five tomahawks, wi’ blude red-rusted;
Five scymitars, wi’ murder crusted;
A garter, which a babe had strangled;
A knife, a father’s throat had mangled,
Whom his ain son o’ life bereft,
The grey hairs yet stack to the heft;
Three lawyers’ tongues, turn’d inside out,
Wi’ lies seam’d like a beggar’s clout;
Three priests’ hearts, rotten, black as muck,
Lay stinking, vile in every neuk.
As Tammie glow’rd, amaz’d, and curious,
The mirth and fun grew fast and furious:
The piper loud and louder blew;
The dancers quick and quicker flew;
They reel’d, they set, they cross’d, they cleekit,
Till ilka carlin swat and reekit,
And coost her duddies to the wark,
And linket at it in her sark!
Now, Tam, O Tam! had thae been queans,
A’ plump and strapping in their teens,
Their sarks, instead o’ creeshie flannen,
Been snaw-white seventeen hunder linnen!
Thir breeks o’ mine, my only pair,
That ance were plush, o’ gude blue hair,
I wad hae gi’en them off my hurdies,
For ae blink o’ the bonie burdies!
But wither’d beldams, auld and droll,
Rigwoodie hags wad spean a foal,
Lowping and flinging on a crummock,
I wonder didna turn thy stomach.
But Tam kend what was what fu’ brawlie,
There was ae winsome wench and wawlie,
That night enlisted in the core,
(Lang after kend on Carrick shore;
For mony a beast to dead she shot,
And perish’d mony a bony boat,
And shook baith meikle corn and bear,
And kept the country-side in fear:)
Her cutty sark, o’ Paisley harn,
That while a lassie she had worn,
In longitude tho’ sorely scanty,
It was her best, and she was vauntie.—
Ah! little kend thy reverend grannie,
That sark she coft for her wee Nannie,
Wi’ twa pund Scots, (’twas a’ her riches),
Wad ever grac’d a dance of witches!
But here my Muse her wing maun cour;
Sic flights are far beyond her pow’r;
To sing how Nannie lap and flang,
(A souple jade she was, and strang),
And how Tam stood, like ane bewitch’d,
And thought his very een enrich’d;
Even Satan glowr’d, and fidg’d fu’ fain,
And hotch’d an blew wi’ might and main:
Till first ae caper, syne anither,
Tam tint his reason a’ thegither,
And roars out, ‘Weel done, Cutty-sark!’
And in an instant all was dark:
And scarcely had he Maggie rallied.
When out the hellish legion sallied.
As bees bizz out wi’ angry fyke,
When plundering herds assail their byke;
As open pussie’s mortal foes,
When, pop! she starts before their nose;
As eager runs the market-crowd,
When ‘Catch the thief!’ resounds aloud;
So Maggie runs, the witches follow,
Wi’ mony an eldritch skreech and hollow.
Ah, Tam! Ah, Tam! thou’ll get thy fairin!
In hell they’ll roast thee like a herrin!
In vain thy Kate awaits thy comin!
Kate soon will be a woefu’ woman!
Now, do thy speedy utmost, Meg,
And win the key-stane of the brig;
There at them thou thy tail may toss,
A running stream they dare na cross.
But ere the key-stane she could make,
The fient a tail she had to shake!
For Nannie, far before the rest,
Hard upon noble Maggie prest,
And flew at Tam wi’ furious ettle;
But little wist she Maggie’s mettle—
Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain gray tail:
The carlin claught her by the rump,
And left poor Maggie scarce a stump.
Now, wha this tale o’ truth shall read,
Ilk man and mother’s son, take heed:
Whene’er to drink you are inclin’d,
Or cutty-sarks run in your mind,
Think, ye may buy the joys o’er dear,
Remember Tam o’ Shanter’s mare,
Big Ange and VAR he disnae care.

Rewatched the Shaktar game again and the difference between th3 two teams, when Celtic broke Shaktar immediately fouled picking up yellow cards, but when Shaktar broke no attempt to stop the player in their own half, Celtic no cards. It is attractive football but without a bite, the team has find another Broonie, or an AItken player, a stopper. “Had we ever been in a position to close out a game in Europe, we would have.”

Mm, the 3 times we did score, we were quickly pegged back, so the evidence suggests not.

That’s the frustrating thing for me, we don’t know how far away we are.

How many more goals per game did we need to turn draws into wins and defeats into draws?

Simply saying 1 against Shakhtar and 2 against Leipzig, doesn’t take account they would up their game and our inability to keep them out.

If the answer is 2 and 3 then we are substantially short.

Still, 10 months to hone our skills for another crack, against the delights of the Livingston Lions and similar.

Ah, I think, I can see a problem.

Just feel we’re too rushed when we win the ball back.we need to be more composed..our forwards hardly get a chance to position themselves before a rushed forward pass is made..

rew67, that’s been one of my gripes for a while,…so many anxious over-hit passes that make great breakaway moves come to nothing. If there are stats for over-hit passes we’d be in first place. Shakhtar and Leipzig both seemed more comfortable with their passing, slick and fast, short and long. But to be fair it’s almost a completely new Celtic team and the longer these players are together the better they should gel.
On another theme, there was a “hand in your face” Livingston tackle during the game and it was played back…Andy Walker said “I don’t see anything wrong with that”. What??????
