Celtic Diary Saturday March 26: Twisting And Shouting at the BBC

BBC Scotland came under criticism again last night after they answered, sort of, a complaint which pointed out that their tribute video to 150 years of Rangers was, in essence, complete bollocks.

Carl Jungle Bhoy, a regular reader and contributor to this site pointed out ….

They decided to answer an entirely different point….

Thank you for contacting us regarding BBC Sport Scotland’s video on Rangers FC’s 150th anniversary and the managers who have led the club. We understand that you may feel the BBC’s reporting referencing Rangers football team is incorrect,

That’s because it is incorrect.

particularly in respect of changes which have impacted on the various companies which have owned and operated the business interests of the club over the past few years. The BBC Trust ruled on this matter in 2013 and, in keeping with the BBC Trust judgement– please see below  we will continue to refer to the team on the field as Rangers FC and only when reporting on the business matters pertaining to the club will we, when and as appropriate, refer to the old and/or new operating companies.

Operating companies….

The BBC Trust finding on the issue may be accessed here More bollocks .

While aspects of this finding may not entirely align with elements of your complaint, the underlying theme – that of how the club should be described – lies at the heart of the finding.

In effect, the BBC are saying here, is that they will dress up the facts in such a way as to suit their intended audience, and thats not what a news outlet should do. Especially the BBC as people tend to believe what they say.

In this respect we would draw your attention to the BBC Trust’s conclusion points on page 5 of the bulletin, as summarised below: The Committee concluded: –that the choice of the right language by the BBC was highly dependent on the purpose and context of the output, including the intended audience and, for example, whether it was a sport story or a business story. -that,while there was no reason to treat the football club itself as “new” simply because the assets that make up the club had been transferred from one company to another, there was good reason to distinguish between “newco” and “oldco” when referring to the owning companies and the corporate transactions involved in the sale of the club. We hope this is helpful in explaining our approach, and thank you again for contacting us.

What was the purpose of the output ?

To deceive ?

We don’t know why the BBC chose to misrepresent the facts here, but we do know that they did make a conscious and deliberate decision to do so.

Looking at the wider picture, and it may seem to some to be an incredible jump, but one worth considering nonetheless, if they can choose to do that with the facts about a now defunct football club, how many editorial decisions have been taken about more serious subjects, such as the Covid pandemic, the Ukraine war, the Yemen and Palestine invasions , and closer to home, the constant lies from the Westminster government ?

What is supposed to be an independent news outlet , which is funded to report facts from the pockets of those it should present facts to has been seen to fail in it’s duty, and as a result, an investigation not only into it’s customs and practice is demanded, but into it’s suitability for purpose as well.

I grew up through the war in Ireland in West Belfast. I saw people being killed, beaten and battered and then the lies of what happened on the BBC news that evening. The fact that they can lie so easily about Rangers doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I’m surprised that the BBC and integrity are ever mentioned in the same sentence. The editorial bias and propaganda fed by them is incredible across UK society. BBC Scotland will be run by the Frasers and Farquhars so don’t expect any change or balance.

The BBC, just like the tabloids, are owned, run by, heavily influenced by, Freemasons, and they have complete control of every narrative, and can and will distort the truth/facts to suit their own agendas. We think we live in a democracy because we get a vote, its who runs the people we vote in that’s the real question….TAL

The BBC since it’s inception, has never been nor was it intended to be, impartial. (See under Reith). If reporters wanted to be impartial they would never have been given a BBC job in the first place. (See under Chomsky). It’s a national propaganda unit.

Paying for a TV License or a Season Ticket at Celtic and then complaining about how they choose to operate is the equivalent of a German National in 1940 paying a monthly’s subscription to the Nazi Party then complaining about how Hitler chooses to run the Country.

Seriously wise up.

Denying them the basic resources to function ultimately denies them the ability to function.
Nothing changes until you change that.
Meanwhile the propaganda wings of the Tories and Capitalists of the BBC and Celtic Board will continue to carry on mugging you off on a monthly or yearly basis.
With the very basic and transparent message of :

Give us yer dough then Foxtrot Oscar

A fool and their money are soon parted they say…

I ve thought for a long time that BBC Scotland was merely an extension of the biased written media. Run by huns for the benefit of huns.
Synchronised, made up, bad news stories at crucial stages of each season. We’ve won trophies fair n square….theyve had EBT’s , DOS, refs, media, The SFA not to mention match schedules to assist…
Scotlands Shame…. and the National Game ffs….

FYI I decided to take up the option of complaining about their reply to my original complaint, throwing in a few extra spanner-shaped questions (before I ran out of space) – see my follow up below – They now promise to get back to me within another 20 days… reply:

———-

YOUR COMPLAINT:

Case number CAS-7137036-G3M9C9

Unfortunately, your email reply 26 March 2022 is unhelpful and disingenuous. A video referring to “Rangers FC’s 150th anniversary” automatically infers an unbroken history both on and off the field, which is simply not supported by facts.

There are countless football clubs where the “owning companies and the corporate transactions involved in the sale of the club” have changed frequently over the years (Chelsea & Man Utd. to name but 2) However, there are NO other cases in British football history where a newly formed club has been able to claim the history of a club which never came out of liquidation. That is unique to the peculiar “5 Way Agreement” constructed by Scottish football authorities to allow the new club to start in the lowest division – without prior consultation with UEFA.

As for the June 2013 BBC Trust decision to use the “right language” based on purpose and context , dependent on whether it’s a “sport “ or “business” story: There are many situations where there’s no clear separation between the two. The “complex nature of this particular story” is one very good reason why you should’ve taken care to avoid a laudatory video in support of a celebration which has very clear business and legal implications.

I’d therefore be grateful if you could answer a few specific questions which will help clarify your interpretation of the 2013 findings (I’ll let you decide if you want to reply wearing your sport or business hat!)

. Is separating a club from an owning company a concept UEFA accepts?

. Does this peculiarly Scottish view align with UEFA FFP Art 12?

. In 2012, UEFA stated the club emerging was a NEW club/company, so not eligible to apply for a UEFA licence until it had been a member of the SFA for 3 years. Does that not confirm that the club founded in 2012 is a new club from BOTH a sporting and business perspective?

. If UEFA do not support the concept of separating club from the owning company, why do the BBC?

Well put Carl.
The bbc findings are a sham in the first instance. And they definitely do not uphold it in any case. They will refer to the club in all business matters like transfer fees received or paid. To uphold their charter they should report. “ the company that operates rangers received an undisclosed fee from the company that operates Everton etc”. Or “the company that owns rangers offered the company that owns Celtic 700 tickets etc”. All business matters.
Of course it sounds ridiculous but this is what they are claiming they will do. They can’t admit that the club was the company incorporated and the single entity went bust. Like you said no other club that changed ownership had to be voted into the league . The truth is so easy to understand but they can’t or won’t admit it.

I’ve seen a photo of John Reith’s letter of application. The letter is folded in such a way to give an origami style impression that you will normally see a lodge number under. His attitude to the general strike established the BBC as an arm of the state. Their coverage of the indi-ref was disgracefully biased. But then the first B is a clue. I enjoy the contortions of Cosgrove on Off the Ball. He knows all of this (and in fairness C4 news is brilliant) but chooses the path of least resistance and his salary but I feel is reaching that dangerous age. And meanwhile when Foot and Corbyn are ridiculed the functioning alcoholic Bojo is a “carachter.” Which in our era of fake news puts the Sevco situation into some context. Capitalism is built on lies and needs a mouth piece. The BBC is that organ. Feck them.

I agree with that but what’s the answer, as its likely to be The Man From The Daily Mail at the moment and who wants that?

The BBC is state sponsored media and it’ll always reflect the state and the government at any time.

If there’s a liberal/light-touch approach from government then you can get some great independent journalism.

However that has always been an outlier and loyalty to state and government is usually the dominant position.

This has been exacerbated over the past 40+ years, through first Thatcher, then Blair/Brown through to today, where governments have seen the power that comes from controlling the media.

Defending the BBC is a tough task these days but the alternatives, more power to the Murdoch and other extreme RW Tax-avoiding interests, demands that it must be done.

There’s been great BBC journalism over the years not least Death on the Rock. But C4 have a much better news output on a fraction of the budget. There are institutions that are set up for the dull middle classes. The voluntary sector, the military, the church(es), and the BBC. I’d like to see BBC Scotland as a separate entity but they, like Scottish Labour, are a branch office of Westminster.

Death of the Rangers or whatever the Mark Daly doc was called was also a good ‘un. 😉

I think C4 may also have some state-funding but because its relatively small-fry it doesn’t suffer the overt government interference that the Beeb does.

While Scotland is in the UK then BBC Scotland will always have a Unionist slant as well as its own locally influenced Hunnish hue.

Remember Big Jock tearing into ‘Blue’ Pete Thompson all those years ago?

Plus ca change. 🙁

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Death on the Rock was a This Week production for ITV. In any case, it is a drop in the ocean of anti-Irish propaganda broadcast by that shower over the years of the Troubles.

I think you’re right about This Week. BBC Scotland, in particular its sports department, has a long history of only employing the right sort of ‘peepul’ all the way back to the 50s. It may have improved slightly in these more enlightened times but the plethora of EBT hundits…I mean pundits… employed there today suggests you still have to know on which side your bread is buttered if you don’t want to be ‘Jim Spenced’ by dear old Auntie.

PS Whatever happened to Kheredine Idessane after he recanted his heresy about the fake Chinese ‘bid’ for Fatso? Did they burn him at the stake anyway as an example ‘pour les autres’?
