Celtic Diary Friday February 12: The Silence Is A Shambles

The Scottish Football Association have released their report on historical child abuse within the game.

In short, they want to see clubs apologise and pay compensation.

Celtic, at the time of writing , have yet to comment.

One can only assume they have their lawyers drafting a carefully worded apology, which also mentions the fact that Celtic Boys club was not Celtic Football club.

That .legally, is correct.

But morally, it’s wrong. Very wrong..

Those kids, who wanted to play for Celtic, were led to believe that this was the way to pursue that dream. What happened to them cannot be erased, but it can be acknowledged and whatever help they need should be offered by the club.

There is no excuse for a failure to act.

Lawwell may have failed in many other aspects as a CEO, but surely he must see the chance to leave some kind of legacy ?

The thing is, if the club don’t do something, the fans might, and a crowdfund for the victims would be damaging to the club , and its image.

Lets hope it doesn’t come to that….

If Celtic can afford to waste ยฃ400G on a lads holiday tae Dubai, then they can afford tae compensate the victims of those horrendous crimes…A Club like no other they keep telling us, then prove it…HH

It would have taken a fraction of Lawwell’s yearly salary to fully compensate the victims associated with Celtic Boy’s Club !
Why the delay ?

Isn’t the court case still ongoing? Until that is concluded imo the board will follow legal instruction which will be, in all likelihood, to issue that carefully worded response.

Law requires directors to act in the best interest of the company and the shareholders at all times.

The CEO and directors have a legal obligation to lay aside any thoughts of personal legacy and put the interests of the company and the shareholders first. They have to weigh the potential damage to the club’s image, etc by following legal advice against any relevant damage that might foreseeably result from breaching that advice. And like I said before imo they’ll decide to follow the legal advice.

I wonder what “legal advice” Lawwell took when he silently sanctioned the 5/6 way agreement in July 2012?
An illegal ‘transaction’ (BTW).
I wonder what “legal advice” Lawwell took when he openly lied to Shareholders at previous AGMs?
Illegal acts.
I do however believe that ALL Scottish football clubs (excluding Sevco as it’s NOT a club, just a 9 year old company, and they swerve action by referring it to the original Rangers FC which they are DEMONSTRABLY not) should confirm the depth of their involvement, apologise profusely to victims and offer huge monetary compensation. Of course, no amount of money can truly compensate one for vile acts against one’s person, but under the out-of-control Capitalist system, it’s all they can hope for.
Me? I want the blood of those perpetrators on my hands; prison is not sufficient, but the mighty Clyde could handle it.
Such an emotive subject and how hopeless words (and Capitalism) are to even TRY to comprehend the damage done. Don’t look to ‘god’ for help, look to guys like me whom genuinely care and will try to make the guilty make amends and, equally, ensure that these indescribaly horrid acts shall never surface again. NO prison. No more Mr Nice Guy. Revenge.

Did Celtic instruct Counsel re the 5/6 way agreement in July 2012?
A CEO or director’s duty to protect shareholders is only in general. It’s why the SPFL board could end the league early last year protecting shareholder clubs in general but relegating Hearts & ICT.
So a CEO is normally careful to only say things that protect the company, the share price and the shareholders in general.
As far as I know cases brought to Celtic have already been settled. However, additionally a court case has been opened against Celtic PLC. The Board is duty bound to follow legal advice in these circumstances no matter their, or your, or my personal feelings.
Fergus stepped up & saved the Club using the system he knew best. I’m not admonishing him, it’s just sometimes I wish the system he knew best was one other than floating as a PLC.

My reference to Lawwell and Legal Advice was not intended to become part of any discussion on the abuse of children (historic or otherwise); merely showing my perennial distrust of him.
To answer your initial question, Lawwell pretends to know nothing of the 5-way. (My use of 5/6-way is because he CANNOT have “known nothing” and therefore was an ‘invisible’ party to it. He was too ‘crafty’ to openly sign something he KNEW was illicit. However it’s important to add that whilst any CEO has a duty to shareholders etc., he has a duty to the Law first and foremost. (Criminal Law not Company Law)

Regarding child abuse, I thought I’d made my position very clear.

To be fair to Peter Lawwell, just this once, I believe there are legal restrictions on the actings of directors that may prevent him from conceding liability, regardless of whether he would personally wish that to be the case or not. It would seem to make more sense to me for the football authorities to establish a compensation fund with the agreement of all member clubs, with each making a proportionate contribution based on turnover. This is a collective tragedy, it should bind every decent fan together, regardless of allegiance, in requiring adequate compensation and, every bit as vitally, ensuring that the monsters involved are hunted down and prosecuted, including those who allowed it to happen on their watch.

TicToc

I just commented without reading all the other comments. It seems we are in full agreement here, as should anyone with an iota of decency be. Lawwell, IMHO, lacks that “iota”.

This scandal should have been dealt with 20 years ago or more.
The boys club was a gateway to the first team & i believe that was how it was portrayed to aspiring young players.
Ian Bankier should be publicly apologising for this on behalf of the club & our supporters, he should then outline what we are going to do about this for all the victims involved.
Accept this has happened then contact the victims & their families & ease their suffering.

Just for once Lawell, be ” World class in everything we do “!

Cartvale88

Celtic are in a no win situation whatever they do, they have been found guilty by the media. The constant harping that people knew, also it was brushed under the carpet by the club. Paedos are extremely devious and frequently have a massive control over their victims, having worked in the field of child care it is extremely difficult to identify.
However Celtic have handled this issue with a corporate hat on, they should have faced the concerns of the affected individuals and dealt with it years ago.
The real losers in this are the victims, young boys who were desperate to wear the hoops and suffered psychological torture from the vermin who were meant to look after their interests. As a parting shot Lawell could come up with a scheme to ensure all abused be compensated, ensuring their future welfare as Brother Walfrid would wish.

Guys if you have heard of this ACSOM – a Celtic state of mind, be careful what you say on there.
I seem to be banned for giving someone a genuine compliment?
Very odd & disappointing as it is a good vehicle for us Celtic supporters to have a view.
Apparently “you can’t comment on someones appearance even in a compliment “?
I don’t know if someone posted something on there under my name but i think that could be the case.
As i say very disappointed as i have done a fair bit of promoting his site on here & other places.
If anyone on here posts on there, maybe ask JPD to get in touch in order to resolve this.
I would love to say i don’t care but i do.
So if you are looking in JPD, maybe let me know what was so bad that led to me getting banned…..or are you getting a bit too big for your boots son?

Yes an apology at the very least. Iver the years we benefitted from Celtic Boys club bring a bit of a conveyor belt. We all assumed it was linked to Celtic , certainly wasโ€™t bringing players through for other clubs. Maintaining the fiction of it bring a totally, emphasis on totally, separate entity to avoid liability is not a good look.
BTW Keighley Bhoy I know the media and Sturgeon were punting the myth that Dubai was a lads weekend. Jeremy Frimpong laid that old chestnut to rest, with his account of how they worked. I think workers should get time off after a shift.. It served us well in recent years and with HINDSIGHT was a big mistake this year. Oh to have foresight as good as hindsight!

The Cha

Reply to  BJF

Agree on the apology.

A lot of fans pointed out the folly of the Dubai trip beforehand. Foresight not hindsight.

In previous years when we’ve done the same there was:

  1. No pandemic
  2. Season break
  3. League sill to win

Although the trip wasn’t disallowed it was against the prevailing public mood in a worsening situation.

If any other ยฃ100m company had attempted to take its top earners/executives on a similar trip, they would have had updated intelligence about this and cancelled knowing the unacceptable risks to the business.

There was no planned break to accommodate this, so we shoehorned one in. Yes, allowable under the rules for the home team to postpone game without consent of oppo but at the expense of our reputation and justifiable accusations of arrogance, which we associate with the Huns.

After the defeat on January 2nd, the league was gone, so the normal justification wasn’t there. Our focus should have been at home, sorting out our chronic problems in the coaching setup and not some foreign distraction.

Similar to the Boli AWOLi own-goali after another timeout after only 1 league played, it just highlights that we’re in a rut and never seem to learn the lessons of past mistakes.

This isn’t hindsight and has been known and complained about for almost 2 year (a few days piss-up in Dublin after winning the league at Aberdeen leading to another wretched performance at Ibrox, increasing their confidence that they’re back, aye ready to take over etc etc).

The only ones that seem incapable of recognising and dealing with this rank unprofessionalism is those in charge.

Right if a lot of fans pointed it out beforehand then I stand corrected. I really only heard the noise after it happened admittedly before they came back.
However I canโ€™t help wondering if they had won every match after they had come back would people have felt differently, Iโ€™m not sure. We would have 9 more points and more convincing firm.
Anyway it didnโ€™t happen that way. I will support the team come what may, boycotts do not work and a new framework will come in and needs supported. I am angry at the way things have gone but I do not intend to give Dave King any satisfaction from this Celtic supporter, โ€˜Cโ€™mon the Hoops.โ€™

The Cha

The external shit-show happened due to the inappropriate behaviour, the injured Julian’s positive test and the mass isolation of players.

Those events and the aftermath would have happened irrespective of our subsequent results.

You’re correct that if we had won all of our games then fans attitudes would be more muted but that would have been a ‘getting out of jail free’ pass rather than a vindication of our actions.

Boycott’s have worked in the past, Celts for Change early 90s and other specific ones over ticket prices etc.

I’m not advocating any current boycott, as a non-STH, I think it would be inappropriate but I’m hope that STHs wait until. concrete actions are taken to improve matters rather than promises of reviews etc that won’t come to anything.

I would imagine that deadlines will keep getting slipped and the more delays the more pressure on the board to take actions rather the normal ‘jam tomorrow’ fluff.

Cha, agree with everything you say…except the league is not over. It’s not over until it’s mathematically impossible to win it. Some years back they were 13 points in front of us at year’s end and they, the media, the “expert” ex-player pundits all said the league was won. And how wrong they were.

The Cha
Reply to  Funkyy

I can’t remember them being 13 points ahead at New Year and us reeling them in.

Its true that we can still arithmetically win the league, as can Hibs and Aberdeen but there’s no chance of it happening.

The bookies, famously not known for losing their shirts, have Huns 1/100 Celtic 66/1

According to them we’ve got a 1 in 6600 chance but if you genuinely think we’ve got a chance then avail yourself of free money, for every ยฃ you give them the bookies will give you several tenners in return.

They’ve only dropped 8 points all season, in 28 games, and would need to drop double that in 10 games and we would need to win every single game.

Its simply not going to happen.

They’ve already played twice and won at Hibs and Aberdeen and have a perfect record at home, winning 13 and scoring 39 and only conceding 1.

They’ve also had the edge over us these past 2 years and we’re not going to beat them twice.

They are playing without any pressure, so will continue to win the vast majority of games.

My depressing but realistic aim for the season is to stop them being invincibles, delay the winning until after the split and to try to keep the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park.

Focus for me is on the future and I’ll quite happily see young players blooded that can be the bedrock for the future rather than persevering with the current failures.

When i was a kid reading Pravda ( Celtic view ) it was clear to me that the Celtic boys club were a close part of Celtic F.C., at no time did i ever think it was a ” seperate entity “.
Sure it may have been an unofficial connection to the main club but surely we can see they were a part of Celtic.
Let us take a lead here, apologise, and for the love of God, get a meeting set up between the club & the victims & help them, emotionally & financially.

SORT IT CELTIC!

I agree with most of your points, but I think that celtic should be taking care of the victims of the celtic boys club scandal and not paying compensation for the victims of every other club in Scotland. These clubs and their supporters hate celtic with a vengeance so let them sort out their own affairs and let us deal with our own obligations, and we may find a way to finally draw a line under this scandal.
Ps lets not forget that the SFA were the supposed guardians of the Scottish game and have totally shirked their responsibility towards these young players and their families, so lets clear them all out and start again with a clean slate.

To younger readers who wonder ‘how?’ There was trust. People believed that institutions took care of their children. That included the Church and second in many people’s list was Celtic. Then there was a significantly less amount of leisure time. Long hours, tough jobs and a lack of cash meant football teams, youth clubs, cubs, scouts and so on meant the kids out of your hair in trusted hands. There was also naivety. Paedophilia wasn’t discussed. There was shame. People who knew about it were victims. There was defference. Things were kept quiet. Priests moved to another parish, teachers switched schools. Parents encouraged not to make a fuss. But above all there were victims. Kids whose lives were irrevocably changed. I work with Huns with finance backgrounds. They smirk and shrug their shoulders at EBTs, tax evasion, going bankrupt and giving the cash to the wife. There’s being smart and there’s being honest. FFS Celtic open up the darkness to the light. Make reparation. Otherwise we are no better and in terms of the crime we are worse. An EBT and side letter over an abused child? Me neither.

The least that has to happen for the remainder of the season, is to play like a real Celtic side, picking up maximum points on the back of impressive performances.
Pride of you like.
It’s been a mind numbing ( sorry Duncan ) season but no game means nothing.
Just put up a fight Celtic & when we play them next, beat them!
If the Scottish cup is still going to be played this season, then let’s go & win it.
There is a way to lose & for me that’s to give everything you have until the final whistle.

Even though St Johnstone are modestly placed in 8th position, they are very much a dark horse team that has only lost once (when they were robbed at Ibrox by the cheating huns and their ref) so far this year. They’ve won three out of their last five league fixtures and we mustn’t forget that they also recently bitch-slapped Hibs 3-0 to get to the League Cup final. Cal Davidson has got the Saints sizzling in recent games with midfielders Muz Davidson and Dave Watherspoon providing the graft, young Northern Ireland winger Ali McCann the craft and although Stevie May is sitting at the top of the goal charts with 10, its new guy Guy Melamed from Israel (used to play for the Beer Shavers) who could be the main one to watch as he’s been oozing class of late.
It’s great news that Steven Welsh’s injury is not serious although I don’t think he’ll start today. Pitching Effy Duffy into the starting XI could be a bit much so I’d go with Bitton (if fit) as he’s the lesser of the two evils. Jonjoe and Taylor have at least brought a bit more defensive stability to the back four. I think Calmac is due a rest (although I know he won’t be given one), Turnbull will keep his place and I think it’ll be a toss up between Rogic and Christie, both of whom scored spectacular goals the other night. Broonie could start with Soro coming on later. This is expected to be a tough game so any kind of win will do. COYBIG

Having won 3 in a row with a roughly 4-4 (diamond)-2 Lenny has such a downer on Griffiths that he would prefer a 4-2-3-1 (our downfall this season) to playing Griffiths up front with Edouard, something which has worked in the past. This is vintage Lennon, at his worst. Edddie up front on his own.

Not pleasing on the eye poor passing by most of our players only 2 decent passes both led to goals.
Don’t know how badly Callum has to play to get subbed he was dire the full game..
But a win is a win in this desperate season. Two great contributions from Christie led to both goals.
Big Edouard leaving could pave the way for 2 in a row for that other mob. Troubling times in store.

A patchy game with a lot of mediocrity in our play, especially an abysmal spell during the first quarter hour of the second half when we lost the goal through weak defending (Duffy should have been onto Rooney for that cross ball instead of Taylor and Calmac) and our play became totally flat with plenty of frustration starting to creep in, typified by Turnbull’s silly booking and Christie’s duffed corner. The latter did make amends though and both he and Eddy were sublime for those two great goals. Good character shown for that fightback and the team saw the game out well at the end to safeguard the points. Other positive points were Broonie and Taylor’s contributions and in the last half hour their was an eagerness among our players to defend well in numbers and win those loose balls. A lot of suffering but at the end of the day Perth’s quite a difficult venue these days to come away with full points so well done.
