Celtic Diary Friday January 22: Howe We’ll Move Forward

Finally, from the silence surrounding Celtic Park, the bookies and an assortment of drunks have let it slip that Eddie Howe is top of the list to replace Neil Lennon when the Irishman finally accepts that his time at Celtic is up.

We gave you a clue in the title of the diary the other day, but I suppose given this keyboards inability to spell, you probably missed it.

Celtic kept it all quiet, and with Newcastle and Sheffield United sniffing around, you can see why the club opted to keep it to themselves. There’s still time for Lawwell to make an arse of it, so I’d still hold your breath until its actually a done deal.

As for Neil Lennon, he still refuses , almost in a Trumpian style, to accept that his time is up. The guy who once ran his heart out for the club in the thirty degree heat of Seville for two hours now has to accept that the players in his charge are not of that ilk, and have no intention of taking the club to their heart like he did.

It;s a different world out there now, and when Keiran Tierney, a lifelong fan left, the writing was on the wall for a number of others, at least until the plague came to town. the gap in wages, and latterly professionalism, was no longer enough to keep young prospects that were already here, nor to tempt those from abroad of even higher potential.

Lennon had accepted and planned for that, with the purchases of Soro, Turnbull, Ajeti and Klimala, but those who wanted out were limited in their options, and when they decided they had to stay, the manager backed the wrong horses in the wrong races, and thats why we are where we are today.

If, however, he’d have continued with the professionalism installed under Rodgers, with first class training, sports science and attitude, things might have been different, but he didn’t,  so they’re not.

Back in August, one of our regular pish stained drunks had noted the differences at Lennoxtown and throughout the club, and told us that Celtic would be sixteen points adrift at the end of the season, such was the deterioration in standards and application.

At the time I dismissed it as hysteria, and rightly so, as there’s little chance of pulling it back to sixteen unless there is real and significant change.

The season may well be remembered as one where everyone at Celtic just thought we had to go out and do what we had done many times before, but in doing that, we also forgot what that was.

Anyhoo, all we can now do is look forward, and if its true that Eddie Howe is about to be announced as manager, then things will change.

Howe is not unlike Brendan Rodgers in his attitude to coaching and the other aspects that make a good team a great one, and although he has had limited success and hardly any pressure at Bournemouth (twice ) and Burnley,  it was only a matter of time before a bigger club with greater demands made a mive for him, despite his preferred option of living on the south coast.

As a pragmatic fellow, he will have realised that if he wants to further his career, he’ll have to move, and a few years in Glasgow with its scenic Clyde coast is as good a substitute as anywhere.

In fact, it could even be a reason for him taking the post, as let’s face it, the money, the weather and the unreasonable demands of some sections of the support are not going to bring many people hurtling up the M74 shouting “pick me “.

Howe should make a difference at Lennoxtown, and as a new face he’ll have no loyalty towards some players, and no reason to keep any who want to leave.

As long as he’s allowed to do the job his way, without interference and is allowed to bring in players that he thinks will do a job, and remove those he thinks won’t, we’ll be fine.

But if its just a different front for Lawwellball, then we’ll be in exactly the same place as we are now in about six months time.

Even just a measure of enthusiasm from the bench will make a difference….

Various media outlets picked up on a tweet from Supporters Liason Officer John Paul Taylor yesterday, when he responded to an enquiry about the review that was supposed to have taken place on the manager and his staff….

As far as I’m aware it was planned to provide an update on the review in the next week or so Jim
What we heard was that the review was done, and Howe was contacted.
Lennon will be aware of this, and it will hurt him. the fact of the matter is though, that the players are clearly not playing for him any more.
Image
Perhaps this admission, after yet another piss poor performance at Livingston, is more revealing than he meant it to be…
Image
Er, it’s because he hasn’t changed his procedures or his philosophy that we haven’t reached anywhere hear our previous levels….
As usual, there are various rumours on the web, and on whatsapp, which allude to the arrival of howe, but our drunks are more informed than theirs, so we do expect a change, but its by no means certain yet.
It’s sad how it has ended for Lennon, especially given his history with the club, but when you do this….

Duly signed Mick. A MAJOR point missed I think and almost certainly illegal: The acceptance of the SPL bribe to all SPL clubs that the original Rangers’ share of prize money for 2011/12 would be split with the other clubs (if 5/6-way signed) instead of being given to Rangers. I wonder if the Liquidators know that. The Administrators certainly did as they were party to it.
HH and Good Luck with the petition which IMHO needs to be spread far and wide to attract as many backers as possible. I’ll do my bit.

I suppose calling out the media in Scotland was a sign Lenny was going. Glad he had his say. He was a great player for us and a good manager but it is clear we need a change. It won’t happen throughout the Club if course but a new manager and coaching team is vital. I don’t know if its true standards have dropped since Rodgers left, only the players under both regimes can be certain. It could just be social media nonsense. Can Howe translate this far north? It didn’t work for him at Burnley but at least he is Premiership class and more experienced.

Watch that clown that runs the club, he is two faced!

Sad to see the demise of a great player, he has totally lost the plot, the reaction to the criticism at the conference of the Hun media was too little too late.
Celtic at all levels are too compliant to the media that roll out every erstwhile EBT muppet to give their tuppence worth.
Lenny is only part of the problem. The other is Wankier and Pedro that allowed the drift, by cheap-skating at every opportunity. There general stewardship of the club for the last fifteen years has been poor, yes we have won trophies, but seriously the opposition which we have stumbled down to. The truth is the European form when we fall to great clubs such as Molde, Cluj, Sarajevo, Copenhagen et all.
As for some of the incoming, could this be Pedro trying to placate the support, rather than bring in players to strengthen the team, Barkas being a prime example, why not stick with Gordon or go after Marshall

Obviously the pandemic is enforcing its own harsh restrictions on any transfer activity across the globe at the moment but the fact is we do need two or three players in key positions urgently. Given that absolutely nothing concrete seems to be emerging for us on the transfer front as we approach the end of the month could be another indication that Lenny will soon be on his way out.

Eddy Howe, He’s a Cherrie through and through. Aged 43, he played for AFC Bournemouth as a centre back, before an injured knee stopped his playing career, (perhaps he could be the manager to, at long last, Fix it, Feck it and Flog it, that centre back position that has been very problematic for Celtic, in recent years). He took Bournemouth from the brink of relegation from the football league, from the bottom of League two, to the Premier League for the first time in its history. He was declared the Football League Manager of the decade following three promotions over a seven year period. Could Eddy be Celtics Cherrie on the top? The bookies have stopped taking bets on it apparently. Thank goodness he wasn’t a ‘Seagull’….

That picture on Wednesday night of Neil Lennon sitting with his head in his hands spoke more than any words could say. He looked broken. It was difficult not to feel sorry for him. We all have a view on how we regard him as being the Celtic manager. But, taking his mental health issues into account, it looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. He seems to be in a state of denial and the pressure on him must be ramping up day after day. The question that you ask yourself is.. why does he put himself through all of this, it cannot be for the money, no amount of money is worth that, as you watch your reputation suffer. It must be said that he will probably not get another managers job in the near future, if at all. That look of unknowing despair says everything about his current situation, surely others above him can see that, as can we. For your own sake and for your health’s sake Lenny its time to call a halt….

Good article again.

The paragraph that jumped out was ……”As long as he’s allowed to do the job his way, without interference and is allowed to bring in players that he thinks will do a job, and remove those he thinks won’t, we’ll be fine.”

NL is , understandably, being judged for his decision making and approach which seem to be out of date. This has been his downfall.

The main problem in our regression as a Club is not just down to NL. PL has been instrumental in the club going backwards. He either has to leave with him or concentrate on the finances of the club and bring in a quality qualified DOF rather than trying to masquerade as one himself. If he remains at the club as an unqualified and out of depth DOF, I can only see the next manager’s tenure ending similarly to BR.

All the posts over these last months have contained various degrees of truth about this season from hell, and there’s no arguing that the blame is shared by the Board, the coaching staff, the medical team and the manager and a complete clear out and fresh start/rebuild is needed before next season.
But if it’s a case that certain players downed tools because they were “unhappy” (while at the same time picking up a wage that we can only dream about), then they should be rooted out and kicked out as well. No way did all those players have a “bad run of form” all at the same time. As usual the real sufferers are the faithful fans.
Many of those players will go sign for other clubs and collect a nice signing on fee and wage increase and never feel any regret about throwing away the Ten…what do they care? It’s just a number to them. The only number they care about is on their ever growing bank balance statements. Celtic is just a stepping stone to a “bigger” club with a guarrantee of more money.
They could have been legends and always been loved forever even after the money was spent.

Tell me, why were so many supporters absolutely gutted directly after the Scottish Cup Final when he was given the job? We knew what was coming down the pike and what we are witnessing now is confirmation of the supporters feelings of dread. If what went on in Dubai becomes public knowledge, I’m sure quite a few Lennonites will be dismayed and all covered up simply to protect his and Lawwell’s fat arse from guaranteed supporter meltdown. His rant the other day was pure and simple deflection.

He’s lost 3 league titles to the Huns, even Deila wasn’t that bad.

Rodgers qualified for the CL 2/3,v which is what we’re (currently) set to be.

His tenure saw a profit of £35m, several times the amount of all the lennon years combined.

In fact your hero cost us almost all that last year, which had to be mitigated by sale of Tierney and raiding the piggy bank.

I’m dreading how much he’s cost us this year.

That’s 2 years he’s had Rodgers level budget and rather than profiting from that investment we’ll post horrific losses.

Remind me what is it about this absolute shitshow that you find so appealing?

Wow. Using the operating costs to determine a manager’s ability or lack of, over a period of time when football has gone into the hyper market. You cannot compare apples to pears you anal retentive moron. Going back a decade and bringing a managers previous club into it. I don’t give two fvcks about Liverpool, though glad to see them pumped out of the FA cup. Desperate stuff even from you.He has spent more on players over this last year and a half than Rodgers spent during his tenure. Rodgers spent £31.15m, the puppet has spent £32.66m. Face facts, the puppet has fvcked it up.

Today the Celtic share price sits at 95.50 pence. Compare that to the 30th. August 2018, when despite CL exit to AEK the share price rocketed to £1.65 pence, Celtic were valued at £209 million, up from £173.45 million the previous year. The Sun reported that it was a summer of uncertainty with Rodgers clashing with U No Who over a lack of transfer activity. This matters to us, because the higher the club is valued at, the better protected the club is. Of course like many other companies Covid has affected business in a detrimental way. For serious business men, the share price matters, the fact that it has fallen so low, is a reflection on THEM. Celtic has fallen from being a potential CL club to where we are today, success on the pitch matters… a lot. The Board need to get their fingers out, stop pretending that they are doing a good job, show leadership, stop hiding and start making the right decisions…. Don’t Cha.
