Celtic Diary Thursday June 18: Slippery Slopes….

UEFA announced yesterday that with the exception of the final play off round, all qualifiers will be one off matches, which caused alarm among Celtic fans.

With the 2019/20 season now scheduled to finish on 23 August, the principal change to the 2020/21 calendar is that everything is now a little later. Qualifying, which had been due to begin on 23 June, will now kick off on 8 August, with the group stage draw in Athens on 1 October and the competition proper getting under way on 20 October. The knockout stages will be unchanged from the original schedule.

All qualifying ties will be single-leg matches before reverting to home and away fixtures for the play-offs.

The final will take place at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium, which had been due to stage the 2020 decider. Saint Petersburg, the prospective 2021 host, will now stage the 2022 event.

In fact, we may now have the date of Celtic’s first competitive match since the lockdown, as they have released the timetable for next seasons tournament…

27/04/2021–05/05/2021 Semi-finals
29/05/2021 Final

Celtic start in the first qualifying round, and won’t face  Lincoln Red Imps in Gibraltar. but there are a host of other unfamiliar names and potential banana skins, so it might be an idea to see the doctor about some form of beta blocker.

It’s not as simple as it looks, and there will be further problems as they also declared…

The deadline for national associations to enter teams to the competitions will be 3 August for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League; and 10 August for the UEFA Women’s Champions League

which runs directly opposite what they said about

With the 2019/20 season now scheduled to finish on 23 August,

Some of the resumed leagues may not have finished in time to declare entrants, especially if there’s a further lockdown with new outbreaks of corona beginnng to emerge.

In the midst of all this, Hearts, who voted along with most other Scottish clubs to end the 19/20 season early, are now going to sue the SPFL for loss of earnings as a result of the vote.

They are hoping for £8m, which sets up an interesting legal battle in the months to come.

Word is that the SPFL might consider a suspension for the Edinburgh club, but they haven’t stopped laughing yet and so a decision may take some time.

One legal viewpoint runs like this….

Image

Image

Hearts voted to end the season, which it has to be said weakens their case.

Something else which slipped under the radar of the Scottish SMSM was the opinion of Steven Gerrard, this weeks manager over at ibrox, who countered the opinions of his club/company’s fans when he said;

Image

No mention was made of an asterisk, and no tricky questions about his own club either…

Then again, his followers have made their dissatisfaction known about a number of things lately…culminating in yet another riot on Glasgows streets where they made their views known about refugees, who were protesting about living standards.

Some may baulk at the cheek of those offered refuge at the expense of others finding something to moan about, but the issue is far, far deeper than that, with little doubt that some are making an awful lot of money out of it.

Anyway, the far right extremists who aren’t all that keen on foreigners unless they can play football took to the streets to announce that Brittannia rules the waves whilst Police Scotland waived the rules for the day, allowing them to vent their spleen.

When football was shut down, it seems that no one thought about what to do with those who frequent Ibrox would do when their safe place was taken from them, but now we fucking know, don’t we ?

Reportage of the riots has been framed as “rival protesters ” by the same compliant media that has allowed the extremists to grow in number and confidence, and unless the video footage from cctv is analysed and those responsible are held to account, then we are merely stoking the fire ready for a major disturbance later this summer.

2020 is turning about to be a bit of a nightmare on a number of fronts, and societal leaders need to get a grip on the undercurrent of violence that is being encouraged by those who would rather we focused on that than on the thousands of deaths caused by their incompetence in dealing with  viral pandemic that hasn’t gone away yet.

Anger and frustration is finding a way to reach the streets, and we may be on the verge of complete chaos.

Especially if its true that Southampton want £10m for Fraser Forster.

If thats the case, it’ll be another loan deal or a swap plus cash for Ntcham.

Meanwhile, there is a chance that the hordes will be placated, as Castore Sports have brought out a range of products to soothe their furloughed brows…

Wee are the peeepul.

The boredom amongst the Orcs must be frightening, there belief in the Aryan Race philosophy is incredible, especially when you see them marching and tearing through cities. Like the Hertz, Budgie has lost the plot, she does not realise she can be flung out of Scottish Football by the other clubs.
Watched the footie last night it was dire, a second hand product, unfit players running about as headless chickens, as for KT whoever advised him to go to Arsenal may have finished his career, a shower of posers.

Tierney’s decision to join Arsenal was a huge mistake. they are a club on the decline and have been for years. They cannot keep up with City, Chelsea, Utd and Liverpool. Spurs appear to have more cash. As poor a decision as Charlie Nic ‘s was all those years ago. Another season at Celtic injury free and he could have gone somewhere better. He will win nothing at Arsenal. But waving 70 grand in front of his face was enough. I have to say I was surprised by his choice and the speed he grabbed the cash. He was earning 20 odd grand a week which hardly means he will have to worry about his future. I think he was still living at his Ma’s as well. 5 grand a week rent, piece for his work included?

I was sad when Tierney left us. But can we blame someone who saw their wages trebled (or maybe even more)? Hopefully he’ll be back at us later in his career, not near retirement, but at a stage when he can still contribute well.

Agree good luck to him. If he plays as we know he can at Arsenal bigger clubs will come calling. The Arsenal shop window is well watched through the EPL which is shown just about everywhere in the world

Neither KT or Arsenal did much last night to impress . I doubt if Tierney the rat ever impresses me again . My problem with him , in his short playing career with us he told us weekly that he was the greatest Celt ever . From he was 5 yr old there was no one like him . Brown , Forrest & the others hadn’t the same devotion as him . Having caught to go to Everton & was talked out of it by bad PL , he demanded move to Arsenal . So keen to go he didn’t realise his £70k per week didn’t come until last yr of contact . We lost 2 rats last season , both best forgetten, both used Celtic fans

Can’t see it as a mistake. They were playing man citeh, expected result. All too predictable. If he plays like he can he will get another move. Setting himself up for life with that level of salary and more to come if he plays to his ability. Get real here and drop the loyalty bullshit. It’s an opportunists game. Guys like Larson come across for a lifetime with elite ability. He did get himself into the mix later in life. How many times does that happen? He was a one off. Tier Ye is a good man we should be behind the young guy

I dont think we will need to concern ourselves with champions league. Most leagues are back across Europe by the time we play our first game they will be upto full match speed.
There seems to be a lack of urgency to get quality in. We only have Neil and John as first team staff. They need help. This is the big one and they will need someone to help them carry the burden of weight that will be placed upon their shoulders.
Forster was worth a goal of a start for us. He kept us in so many games last season that the cup could have been lost and the Europa league campaign not as fruitful.
Everything must be done to secure his services for this season alone.

I don’t know how you know if there is a rush to get the right person in to work with first team . At the moment players are just working in groups & don’t need highly skilled managers to bring them on . The club would be better served getting the right man in rather than anyone for sake of filling position.
I think everyone knows important of signing Forester or better for incoming season . Forester was brilliant last season

Let’s never forget what state violence looks like.

The ‘battle of Orgreave’, on 18 June 1984, involved nearly 10,000 pickets and 4,000 police. Police, including mounted police, attacked the pickets and made nearly 100 arrests, including National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) president Arthur Scargill. Many miners sustained injuries from police truncheons.

Subsequently the belief has grown that Orgreave was a deliberate trap sprung by the police acting on orders from the political establishment to smash the NUM.
During the strike it was becoming harder to picket the flying pickets were being stopped in their tracks.
But on that sunny day everyone was shown the way, the miners were in good spirits as they took their guidance from the police. Of course we all know now that they were just being Kettled into place.

Despite evidence of assaulting striking miners and subsequently perverting the course of justice and committing perjury – the so-called Independent Police Complaints Commission said in 2015 it would not pursue a criminal investigation into the actions of South Yorkshire police on that day “because of the passage of time”.

The following year, then Home Secretary Amber Rudd justified blocking an inquiry on the grounds that “ultimately there were no deaths or wrongful convictions”.

The fact that there were no deaths given the repeated baton charges by mounted police was purely fortuitous.

Moreover, there were no “wrongful convictions” only because 95 miners facing charges of unlawful assembly had their cases dropped after six weeks on trial because police evidence was deemed “unreliable”.

Rudd was clearly seeking to protect from exposure the political establishment’s role in conspiring to break the miners’ strike.
Jeremy Corbyn of course always stated a labour goverment would indeed hold a full inquiry.
Fuck the Tories
