Celtic 2- 1 Lazio

Well what a night that was!

Sheer beautiful bedlam!

It all began with a lovely start having us all prepared for quite a nights football.

After a half hour of back and forward rough and tumble, it was looking like it might be one of those nights.

A night were the wily intelligence of the Italian side would be matched by the dogged determination of the Scots outfit.

10 mins later and the Italians were in front. From a move started by Celtic pushing up the park.

A quick few passes and Lazzari was racing down the right hand side and blasting the ball passed a stricken Forster.

I have to admit I shouted a few expletives about the keeper at that point…what do I know?

The half time whistle duly came and Celtic fans thoughts began to wonder just how would Neil Lennons side turn this around.

The answer came in the form of Ryan Christie.

After his SPFL rest, Christie had seemed off the boil in the first half against Lazio but that opening 45 was only him shaking off the rustiness.

The Bhoy Wonder that is Christieano ran, harried, passed, tackled and chased all over the final 3rd. Lazio were not allowed to settle and had to hope of a few breaks for their chances. Thankfully when they got chances, they either saw Corra hit the post, Immobile screwed a well worked shot wide or they met with the wonderful Fraser Forster who blocked and saved like a world beater.( Hypocrite CSC – Ed)

At the other end though, Christie curled in the equaliser after some great play from Eddy

And how they both embraced in celebration.

]

Celtic were now going for it and fair play to Lenny who lost both full backs and threw on Johnny Hayes and Nir Bitton and went to a 3 at the back in search of more attacking options. Amazingly that attacking option was Scott Brown. His shot from 25 yards went out for a corner and from a perfect 89 minute cross from Christie, up rose Jullien to head perfectly into the bottom corner.

Cue madness in the stands and in the corner as players celebrated.

The game wasn’t quite over though and with a minute to go, Celtic were backed in and trying to clear..the ball fell to  Cataldi who hit the perfect volley towards the top corner. Sadly for the Italians, up flew Fraser Forster ( never in doubt) to save the 3 points.

The ref blew for the final whistle and grown men ( in the Stands and on the Pitch) and women and kids hugged, cheered, cried and smiled…a glorious night at Paradise was had by all.

Manager

A brilliant 11/10 showing from Lenny. His team matched the Italians in the first half only to get sucked into a sucker punch. However the Manager ( and his team – great to see Big John Kennedy threatened with getting sent off is he left the Technical Zone again!) managed to raise his troops and adapt his battle plan to find a way to lose the first half battle but win the Game War. Great tactics and positive substitutions. Bravo.

Fans

From the opening Tifo to them crying out “Fuck Lazio” and how the team responded ….say no more…12/10!

I was delighted that I’d booked my holidays back home and managed to catch three games including Cluj.

Wish I’d waited a few weeks,what a night!

Howdy,folks.

I expect the Sentinel Celts Charity Bet to be back up and running this weekend. As you know,a fiver is thrown in the direction of some poor fool to make of it what he can over the next three weekends. The money is donated by the site and the winnings go to our nominated charity.

Good system,huh?

Except we keep cocking it up. I made it to week two with only £2.20 and blew it. The rest fell at the first!

Anyway,we are always looking for volunteers so if you fancy a go,mail us at

sentinelcelts@gmail.com
*
In order to stretch out the betting capital,it makes sense to place it with a company which offers a ‘Welcome Bonus’ so I decided to lodge £30 with a company called BETWAY as they offered to match it. Having worked our way through the capital,I expected the bonus amount to show up.

It didn’t.

So I contacted their chat line. I was variously told that my VPN is in Ireland,my IP is in Ireland,I was credited it but didn’t use it. All of this is bollocks. I’ve checked VPN and IP. Both UK,both matching my exact location. Bonus fund account always showed zero. I’ve contacted The Guardian about it on a point of principle-first mail I’ve ever sent to a newspaper, btw.

I don’t expect our £30 back, but I hope they look into it and trash the robbing bastards.

So I’ll be opening a new account today. Meanwhile, here is my own personal advice to you all.

Well,if you can’t figure it out from reading the above…

HH.

Now to get the points up North remembering how the titanic effort against Cluj was undermined by the tired performance at Livi. We know fatigue is going to be a factor, as will Beaton, but pick the right team with the right substitutions and we will cap a memorable week. C’mon Celts, once again to the well.

its a copy of the brigate rosse… a ‘terrorist’ organisation who killed an Italian pm in the 70s and left his body in rome

my argument was why all the F Lazio banners and songs? because he, like the majority of the GB I presume, would run a mile if confronted by one of thee maniacs in rome. doing it from behind segregation 400 yards away isn’t exactly ‘hard’

There’s also the “Brigate Fiamme Verdi”, who no doubt come to mind.

So Fascists march through Glasgow at the the game, given a police escort, making fascist salutes etc and they should be welcomed?

Stick that where the sun don’t shine.

There will be no one to run from in Rome, as your heroes ride around on mopeds “bravely” stabbing men, women and children in their path and riding off sharpish begore they’re confronted.

No surprise that the Morelos fan is piling in, in support of fascists.

IF you read James Forrest over at the Celtic Blog he’s claiming that the “Brigate Verdi” thing is actually a tribute to an organisation called the “Brigate Flamme Verdi” that fought Mussolini’s Facists during WWII.

Also, by your logic, they shouldn’t call themselves “The Green Brigade” at all.

Charlie Lennon struggled last night in my opinion
Boli should have been hooked at half time he was out his depth. Lenny kept with him and it nearly cost us a second goal from his flank in fact all their best chances came down his flank. Maybe because Ellanoussi was so poor and McGregor first half also might be too hard on boli but I dont think he can keep the Jersey much longer but to be fair he does give his all it’s just it doesn’t amount to much.
The simple passes were the most frustrating last night and we do need to keep our composure better.
But GET IT RIGHHT FUCKIN UP YE LAZIO YEESSSSS
I thought
Forster 10
El Hamed 8
Jullien 10
Ajer 7
Boli 4
Broony 10
Forrest 6
McGregor 6
Christie 10
Ellynoussi 5

Charlie Saiz, nobody on here could accuse you of being a Hun! No way. Your previous match summary is spot-on. I watched the replays of the Porto match and the Huns looked pretty impressive and Morelos took his goal well. Likewise, you have supported Neil Lennon from the get-go, more than many of us including me and I am the least Hun-loving criminal around, maybe next to Monti! Keep up the good work old warhorse. Your contribution on this site is valuable. As two old socialists, we see things differently politically but that isn’t football. We both stood by Ronny Deila and that has caused me any amount of grief, unjustified. I appreciated the ally. We do need to be mindful of the Hun. Now, we need to get things right up at Pittodrie and here goes: Sinclair deserves a shot to score another hat-trick up there!

Charlie it is your opinion that Moronales played better that Eddie. I disagree with your opinion. Celtic won and Rangers drew their game. Celtic certainly had a great night in Europe. The rangers got a point. Less to purr about I think given their loose interpretation of financial fair play which will catch up to them. Bothe keeprs played well I agree with your opinion on this and the coefficient went up.

How many times was morelarse red carded last season?
How many times has Edouard been sent off?
How many times has fatty scored against Celtic?
How many times has Edouard scored v them & in big games?

The reality is Edouard will go for £30m, he will play for France as will Moussa Dembele.

The point is there is no comparison, on the back of a fine Celtic win you immediately start banging on about a fat fkn hun & playing down Edouard.
You played Dembele down in favour of a guy who is not now contributing fkn anything to the team.

Who gives two fks about their fkn result in Porto?
Who?

Q. to you dim boy, of all the CELTIC things you could have talked about you found ot best to start decrying Odsonne Edouard & bumming up that fat wee fkn jizzbox over at ibrox.

For multiple reasons this guy isn’t making himself available.

With the potential loss of Edouard ( gulps ) next summer, we really need to bring in a main striker.

Funny how we see the same game and take different things out of it. So many times I have seen Celtic dominate against not great European sides, attack, attack and lose to a late breakaway. Lennon described Lazio as “ superb” , they are the 6 th best team in Serie A, two exceptional saves from Forster and they hit the post just before Christie’s goal it could have been so different. Eddy had two men on him every time but what a pass for the goal, our full backs struggled a bit but Julien, Ajer and Forster were brilliant, Brown and Christie were everywhere, if Christie’s strike in the first half had gone in instead of hitting the post well….
Lenny’s European record is immense, seems no time since we got hammered by Barce and PSG.

The point that our away support have been set up royally – pun intended – is well made. Roma and Lazio ‘Ultras’ i.e. huns that some of the GB identify with, teamed up to attack Spurs fans at the request of West Ham Ultras/thugs/pricks. Best result in Europe in years but let’s talk about the GB? Pure narcissism. No player, no fan is bigger than the club. Yes CS it’s a club and actually a more democratic one than for most of our history.

In the other corner, now hailing from darkest Engerund, the thinking man’s pundit, Charlie Saiz, No low blows, shake hands and come out of your corners fighting. Bhoys, bhoys…Monti, get nurse Ratched ready: Leigh Griffiths deserves one final chance this year to get fit and score goals! One last chance to prove he can be a professional. We could really use him now and later.
Sinclair should start at Pittodrie, please Lenny.
We have two weak areas of the pitch: forwards and central defence.
We can put Elhamed and Bitton there but an injury to Edouard would put us at great risk until/unless Bayo comes good.

Regarding Aberdeen, most Scottish teams lacking good footballing skills: dribbling, passing, tackling, defending and general good fitness resort to fouling, tripping, elbowing, poor tackling, resulting in injuries, usually to the team with superior skills. The Sheep are already boasting of their “aggression” and in the past we’ve suffered a few injuries at their hands. We need to keep our footballing skills and shape, but also be able to dish it out too.
Forster
Elhamed/Ajer/Jullien/Taylor
Brown/Ntcham/McGregor
Forrest/Edouard/Sinclair
Good referees would protect our players so Aberdeen might soon have 10 players left on the pitch. We need to keep the heid and play harc but clean football. Forrest, Rogic and Sinclair have all done well against Aberdeen in the past. No prediction but we know we need to win this won to keep up the pressure and momentum.
Monti, I like your lineup but I’m sure Lenny has his own ideas. 3-5-2 and 4-3-3. both effective and possible.

CS. What you don’t get is that many fans know the Board are different from us. We know they have always had a biscuit Tim ( sic) mentality and relied on players love of the fans and the standing of the Club to pay them less. They did it in the 50’s, with the Lions and even with Big Jock. They messed up with Racing Club, with Rapid Vienna and always with the Klan. but… we still go, the build up, the journey, the team, seeing the grass, seeing fellow fans and hearing and feeling the support for the Club. Being part of something, strengthening that father, son, grandson tradition that keeps us coming back in spite of results or setbacks or blatant cheating. Celtic scoring is on of the best feelings in my life. It’s about more than the Club, it’s part of our life.

Boards have always been charged with keeping the club in business and financially healthy. That has never changed it is still the same. Their skill set is financial and governance given the times they govern over. That has never changed. The amount of money and the road to ruin have become more apparent in recent years as big TV money impacted the game around the world. Our Board are particularly good at keeping Celtic financially healthy and they have to do it in a set of circumstances that reflect the reality of our league and position in the football world. Their governance role can be questioned in relationship to the shambles of the old Rangers Board acting illegally which led to the liquidation of the old club. What happened after that liquidation left a lot to be desired and who knows what deals were done? So I don’t think our Board are spivs or conmen at all. As for 9 million celtic fans around the world – that number is fake as it counts 7 million celtic fans in Japan. There aren’t. The twitter fed for Celtic is barely in the hundreds of thousands. So let’s get over that. The club is successful, playing well, mostly full houses, financially solid etc. the whole debacle with new rangers that’s another matter.

Did I miss the Celtic game?

Charlie Saiz, what you say is true but many of us feel we must fight on several fronts in an imperfect world. It could be argued that the Fans are the real Celtic, therefore nothing the spivs and charlatans at Celtic and elsewhere can ever take our club away from us. Past, present or future. Perfect conditions will never prevail therefore we must somehow support our playing team whilst fighting against so much else. Life is short, fuck the charlatans on our Board and elsewhere, and enjoy the game. We can fight on all fronts but nobody can stop me supporting the ideal of our club for we are the club. It will also belong to my children and grandchildren. It is always a work in progress. I respect your position but it is only one of several. Nobody I know who attends matches thinks we are stooges, lackeys or pawns. Your goal of us fans owning the club one day is the best plan going but it might take time and although “I am pale, stale and male” I have never had power, privilege or wealth. Sometimes, we have to live in the world, until we can change it.
Now, I would like you to tell us how we can win tomorrow.

If we go down 2-0 tomorrow, plan B will be Fraser Forster playing center forward.

Nope, you still don’t get it. Your view of the economics of the club, some of which I agree with, cloud your emotional and practical support. I am not a fan, ( fanatic) I am a supporter of this club, this football club for what it stands for here in the West of Scotland and worldwide. Some of this has been lost in the monetizing and middle classing of the game but we need the club and what some of it still stands for as much as ever.
If someone offered you a free ticket, would your principles stop you from going ? Thank God for Celtic.

Question: I’ve never been to a Celtic AGM but isn’t it a foregone conclusion that no matter how many of us dissenters to the Board’s disgraceful stance attend, the Board will get their way with, e.g. Desmond’s proxies?
I’d make the journey if I thought I could help influence the outcome. FC not PLC.

I’m astounded by no replies. If you hate me but love Celtic as I do, then the common denominator is Celtic, we BOTH love Celtic. So, whilst petty squabbles persist and are given weight, ALL of us supporters lose and the arsehole Board wins.
Simple.
Is it any fakkin wonder the Board does as it pleases when you’ve got millions, YES MILLIONS of fans/supporters around this Planet and ‘apparently’ ALL shouting for Celtic victories but few standing up against the scum Board?
I’ll be there, whatever happens, but difficult to make the correct impression without numerical backing, in THIS CRUCIAL case, we need thousands at CP on 27th November.
Incidentally, this is ALL my own vision of what may, and better COULD occur if we get together, communicate as much as we can and then DEFEAT the Board, if they win, by refusing them egress from the venue.
This is NOT for ‘cissies’; this REQUIRES action.
Hail! Hail! The FC, not the PLC.

Cs passion is still there with me I dream of Waltham and a season ticket. No better place to be on the planet when the euro games are at home. Pre internet days we got a bit of Scottish football here but the eighties and nineties were dark ages. Maybe if they weren’t I’d have been in a lot of pain. Passion never goes away. Maybe when we get automatic qualification we will get another visit from the Bhoys over here. We will fill the stadiums all over oz when it happens. The club make decent money from the trips over and we get to see the new signings before anyone else does. Back in the day they used to have round robin comps with the likes of ac Milan and others. They were reasonably competitive.

Waltham? Is that not the left back for Arsenal?

Iancelt67, `77. Tommy Burns stood out and I was in awe.

The fight is on for $75,000.

The ‘World of Soccer’ tournament took place in July 1977. Promoted by Reg Lambourne, ‘soccer’s Kerry Packer,’ according to Laurie Schwab, the first prize was $36,000. Celtic arrived via Singapore without its captain Kenny Dalglish who was unsettled at Parkhead and would soon be off to Liverpool to replace Kevin Keegan. Red Star Belgrade won the tournament in Singapore beating Celtic by three-one in the final, and the expectation in Soccer Action was that they would repeat the exercise in Australia. On Thursday 20 July, Celtic and Red Star drew one-all before 21,000 at Olympic Park. Paul Wilson was the star for Celtic, which was under the pump for much of the game. Red Star scored through Dusan Savic from a pass by Vladimir Petrovic in 82 minutes, but Roddy McDonald chested home a corner kick for the equaliser five minutes later. Bosko Lukic and Pat Stanton were sent off just before the end.

The Celtic versus Arsenal game on Sunday 24 July 1977 was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with the pitch turned east-west instead of north-south ‘for the first time in memory’. ‘People in the Members’ stand who do not pay anything to get into the ground will have the less favourable head-on view of the match.’ The match was attended by the Governor, Roden Cutler, and the Premier of New South Wales, Neville Wran. Expecting 30,000, the match drew 21,460, mainly Celtic supporters, and Celtic beat Arsenal three-two with two goals by Paul Wilson and one by Ronnie Glavin from the spot. Danny McGrain was described by reporter Brian Curran as ‘the best full-back ever to come to Australia’.

On Tuesday 26 July, Celtic had a hard-fought three-two win over the Socceroos, this time at the Sydney Sports Ground. Celtic fielded Peter Latchford, Danny McGrain Tommy Burns, Pat Stanton, Roddy McDonald, Roy Aitken, Paul Wilson, Alfie Conn, Ronnie Glavin, Johannes Edvaldsson and Johnny Doyle. ‘Big Shuggie’ Edvaldsson got two goals and Paul Wilson one. For a midweek match the crowd was a very respectable 12,742 and Celtic manager, Jock Stein, said the Socceroos stretched them. ‘We don’t want another one like that too soon,’ he said. Though he was substituted before the end, Australia’s best player was a Scot, Jimmy Rooney, who had been with the Socceroos in their only World Cup appearance to date in West Germany in 1974. Murray Barnes and Peter Ollerton scored Australia’s goals.

Celtic went on to beat Red Star in the final at Olympic Park on Sunday 31 July, by two goals to nil. Celtic put up the shutters in the first half with Stanton, McDonald, Edvaldsson and Danny McGrain forming an almost impenetrable barrier. Peter Latchford dealt with anything that did get through. Then just before the interval Celtic got a corner and Roddy McDonald kneed Alfie Conn’s inswinger over the line after keeper, Aleksander Stojanovic, raffled it. Two short range efforts by the big central defender but both effective against Red Star. In the second half the game opened up and Celtic clinched it when Roy Aitken sent Paul Wilson away and his cross found ‘Shuggie’ Edvaldsson unmarked at the far post to score easily. Jock Stein got a mention for abusing a television commentator, Jim Barker, who had forecast a Red Star win. That game drew about 22,000 or 23,000, depending on which version of Laurie Schwab’s match report you prefer to read in the Age or Soccer Action.

Still got the tickets. Flew TAA.

Ahhhhhhh, ah, Port brucking filliant, brother! (that’ll be a stretch for many of you)
I got so far and got booted in the haw, maws by one of your most adherent Iti/Abo lovers, ma wee Diamond, for snoring! I was merely in contemplative mode.
Let me make this clear, it’s a wonderful comment by an Auntipodean Tim whom we all love over here in the Unclepodean ‘fingy’, whatever TF it’s called.
Whilst it’s stunning to read that long (and superb) comment (I had to keep going back to the top to make sure it was YOU) 🙂
Is this the kinda thing that makes eTims unique, or rather used to?
Anyway, good on yar Port, an’ ‘ave a noice deiy? Just think Port Pal, you could’ve bin called fakkin Madeira! HaHaHa! 😀
HHH
PS I only recently found out where ‘POSH’ came from, and before you ‘jump in’, it’s not “Antipodea”, wherever TF that is! 🙂
