Celtic Diary Saturday October 20: To Brown Or Not to Brown

The dilemma facing manager Brendan Rodgers today is whether or not to field Scott Brown.

Not because the team arguably put on its best performance of the season without him last time out in Perth, but because it may be a risk bringing him back until he’s one hundred per cent.

With a trip to Leipzig in midweek and a cup semi final at Murrayfield next week, he will be needed for those games, although one could argue todays match will be the toughest of the three.

It certainly has the potential to be the most entertaining, which is one of the reasons why I’m up this early ready to be on the road again. 3pm on a Saturday ? It’ll never catch on. although with two potentially great games this weekend, the other at Tynecaste where Hearts host Aberdeen, its little wonder that only bookies are willing to sponsor Scottish football as the showcase tv game is the fixture between Hamilton and “rangers “, where the visitors will indulge in a spot of community singing to further damage any chance of any money coming into the game.

Back to our game, and of course, there’s every chance that the wily Neil Lennon will set his team up to frustrate and defend, like he did when he was in charge of Celtic against Barcelona, but if Efe Ambrose is playing there’s always a chance of Celtic scoring, and if they do, Hibs will come out. Which could make for a classic.

Genuinely, this game appears to be unpredictable. Then again, I’m no expert when it comes to predictions.

Then again, is Browns time up at Celtic ?

We’ve had more or less everyone else touted for a move by our media, and Stephen MacGowan in the Mail now takes his turn to unsettle one of ours, and this time its Browns turn..

Brendan Rodgers insists he will give Scott Brown all the time he needs to decide on his Celtic future.

As Sportsmail exclusively revealed, ambitious Australian newcomers Western Melbourne want to make the former Scotland skipper their marquee signing if an application to join the A-League from October 2019 is successful.

Out of contract next summer, the 33-year-old is in talks with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell over a new deal at Parkhead. Conceding Brown is at a stage in his career where he might want a change of scenery, however, Rodgers says he will give his on-field leader the time and space he needs to resolve his future.

There you are Broony, read the papers !

The manager considers you surplus to requirements..

I’d wager thats not the case, and Brown, whilst certainly in the autumn of his career, may be around for a while yet. A two year deal on favourable terms, including a reward for lengthy and loyal service, should not be beyond Lawwell and his bean counters.

That won’t stop the speculators from speculating..

And Rodgers seemed to be toying with them..

I’m not surprised if there are people in for Scott,’

‘He’s shown such incredible loyalty to Celtic – but he has got the football rewards from it as well. After ten years, he’s been great for the club.

‘But he’s getting towards the cycle of life for a footballer where he may want to look at other things. Scott loves it at Celtic and loves being here, but players can get offered a financial reward late in their career for two or three years.

‘They may not get that again in their life. There is no doubt that Scott – whether he stays here or goes – will be back one day as a coach or manager.

‘But the great thing is that people are looking at him again in that sort of way. He’s at the top of his game, he’s in a great moment in his footballing life.

‘He’s happy and he’s developing, so let’s see what happens between now and the end of the season.

‘Scott is very focused on what he’s doing right now.’

Sod that, thought the reporter, because despite actually having a cracking story under his desk, he decides to elaborate on this nonsense.

Sportsmail understands Brown has already spoken with both Rodgers and Lawwell about the prospective opening in Australia.

Western Melbourne Group’s director of football Steve Horvat refused to offer a specific comment on Brown on Friday, but admitted: ‘We have made our aspirations quite clear in the media about signing high-profile marquee players and coaches for our first season if granted a licence.

‘I cannot verify these claims as we have spoken to numerous agents who may be reaching out to players and coaches.

‘We do understand that time is of the essence and that, if awarded a licence, we need to hit the ground running with appointments.’ The club have already revealed plans for a new 15,000-seat stadium and training complex, with Australian website The World Game claiming agent Lou Sticca was recently in Europe speaking to prospective coaches and potential marquee signings.

Hang on, a club who haven’t even got a licence are interested in Scott Brown ?

No licence ? Where does he think they play ? Ibrox ?

We’ll leave that one where it is.

Despite the Scotsman headline which has within it more than a hint of hope..

Brendan Rodgers Fears Losing Scott Brown to Oz

Add that to a timely reminder from the Herald about the detail of the deal struck with Leicester for Filip Benkovic..

Celtic defender Filip Benkovic has recall clause for potential January exit

and you can see that the operation to stop the ten is still at full strength.

Chris Sutton has upset with a few with his recent Daily Record column, where he touts his old mate Neil Lennon for the Celtic job when Rodgers eventually heads for sunnier climes.

Accusations that he has taken the soup flew towards the straight talking Englishman, and thats a little unfair.

Its an open secret Lennon wants the job, and its an open secret that Lawwell would offer him it. Just not yet.

Why do you think he’s still at Hibernian ?

So, I suppose I’d better put the soup on as well…

Elsewhere, and we may be seeing a change to European club football soon. Looks like the big five might not be getting all their own way for much longer, if these proposals are adopted..

Following the UEFA Club Competitions (UCC) reform adopted in August 2016 and ahead of the upcoming decisions to be taken by UEFA and its National Associations for the 21/24 UCC cycle, European Leagues have taken the initiative to work on proposals for improving professional Club Competitions in Europe.

An extensive and comprehensive model was presented and endorsed today by the European Leagues during the Association’s General Assembly held in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Leagues welcomed the new innovative three tier competition format (UCL / UEL / UEL2 with 32 clubs each) proposed by UEFA which will allow more clubs from more National Associations to participate to European Club Competitions. In addition, the Leagues outlined the need for a new and more inclusive access list and a new revenue distribution model where solidarity is properly recognised to restore and support competitive balance in domestic competitions.

Specifically, the European Leagues’ model proposes the following improvements to UCC:

Access List – A more inclusive model with:

  • Access for each participating club in every UCC must always be based on the latest performance of clubs in their respective domestic top tier league competition and/or domestic Cup. The only exception are the winners of the respective UCC competitions.
  • An aggregate minimum of 36 (approximately 2/3 of the Access List) domestic champions must take part in the Group Stages of all the UCC.
  • The vast majority of members of the European Leagues support the concept that the UEFA Champions League (UCL) should have a maximum of 3 Direct Access (plus 1 Play-off/Qualifying Round) spots to the Group Stage from an individual National Association.

Calendar – A proper balance between UCC and Domestic Competitions including:

  • A total of 72 Calendar Days, representing 25 weeks, are reserved for UCC matches (i.e. Qualification – PR/QR/PO, Group Stage, Knock-out and Finals).
  • UCC matches are always played on Weekdays (defined as Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) except the Final of the UCL, which is on a Saturday. All other Finals (SCUP, UEL, UEL2) are to be played on Weekdays.
  • Weekdays not reserved for UCC or for National Team matches are for either Domestic League or Domestic Cup competitions.
  • Domestic League matches are primarily played on Weekends (defined as Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday), except those Weekends being part of international weeks that are reserved for National Team matches.

Revenue Distribution Model – A financial distribution based on three pillars:

  • The Distribution ratio between the 3 competitions should be reduced. In particular, the ratio between UCL and UEL should not exceed a maximum of 3.5:1, while the ratio between UEL and UEL2 should be a maximum of 2.5:1.
  • Within Competition Financial Distribution – the Club Coefficient distribution pillar should be removed with the money being reallocated to the Market Pool. The concept of historical titles should not form part of the distribution model within a competition due to its distortive effect to competitive balance.
  • Solidarity Payments – The total percentage of solidarity payments should be significantly increased to help reduce the increasing financial gap in European club football. The increased solidarity percentage should be primarily used for Non-Participating Clubs of both National Associations with and without clubs in the Group Stage of the UCL. Furthermore, the European Leagues propose to include within solidarity the creation of a new Professional Football Development pillar which represents a unique opportunity for National Associations to support the development of professional football in medium and small countries all across Europe, including non-top tier leagues. Under this proposal, a percentage of solidarity payments would be allocated for development projects with focus on youth development, fan engagement, infrastructures, fight against match-fixing and fight against piracy, among other activities. The top five National Associations of UEFA Association Club Coefficient would be excluded from this development pillar to further enhance competitive balance across Europe.

Claus Thomsen, Vice-President of the European Leagues stated: “A fair and democratic Club Competition model both in terms of access and revenue distribution is something I believe all stakeholders – clubs, leagues, national associations and of course the fans fully support. The plan which we are launching today is, in our view, a comprehensive and complete plan with a fresh approach, fresh ideas that will contribute positively to protect and enhance competitive balance across European Football. Maintaining competitive balance is one of the greatest challenges we face in European football today. We have already shared our plans with UEFA and we now look forward to a period of constructive discussion and co-operation together with them and other football stakeholders as we look to secure a brighter future for European football at every level”

Lets hope so.

Caption Celtic supporting Saudi Crown Prince demands Jim Traynor’s head. Enjoy your trip Ralph, one of 4 crucial fixtures in a row today. Difficult to call, we won’t win the lot, can’t afford to drop 3 points today but the Hearts games seem the most crucial. Will Brendan tinker with the squad, that might tell us a lot, can Morgan and Mulumba do a job, is Odsonne ready to play on his own up front, has someone told Sinky to vary his routine and sometimes go outside?

post the nuclear holocaust when a confused Donald Trump pressed the wrong button, Jim Traynor’s head was the only thing that survived. When he questioned himself about this, he denied that there had been any nuclear explosion and issued a statement that his head was not in fact sitting in a blue barrel of nuclear waste. He then added that The Rangers were still going for 55. He repeated the latter several times until his head was consumed by the waste. And it ended. The rangers were not going for 55.

As savage storms, high winds and torrential rains ravage the Meditarranean coast, here I am holed up in my pad (sounds a bit better than padded up in my hole) with the hatches firmly battened down and trying to keep everything as watertight as possible. Hopefully our defence will be equally hermetic today as we line up against a Hibs team that has been firing on all cylinders for quite a while.

After a slightly wobbly start to their season, they have managed to string together a truly impressive run of results and performances. They currently boast the best goal difference in the league. Pretty impressive stuff when you consider they had to rebuild an entire midfield after losing McGinn, McGeough and Allan. Their recent signings seem to be gelling more and more contributing to what could soon turn out to be the most exciting thing to come out of Easter Road since the days of Stanton, Blackley, Harper and Duncan.

Their main striking duo of Aussie Jamie MacLaren (currently on loan from German side Darmstadt) and Swiss hitman Flo Kamberi have both been in top form lately. Their respective goal tallies for Hibs are not to be sniffed at: Maclaren – 9 goals in 20 games; Kamberi – 12 goals in 19 games. In addition, their young midfielder Stevie Mallan (I’ll stick my neck out here and predict that he’s going to be one of ours in the future) has an incredible knack of scoring spectacular goals (both from free kicks and open play) from outside the box. Their on-loan Dallas cowboy Hyndman (recently on-loan to the huns) can be a classy player on his day while their new DM Aussie Spike Milligan (referred to as ‘Skippy’ by the Hibees fans) has been a great revelation this season. Although their defence can leak goals they have enjoyed 4 consecutive shut outs and, after a few trademark howlers earlier in the season, big Efe has developed much more consistency and has been very solid for them defensively. The Hibs boys love him to bits and I shit you not. The visitors will be practically at full strength this afternoon although Tommy Ageypong has been ruled out.

Regarding our own bhoys in green, I’d completely go along with Ralph re Broony. If he’s not entirely fit, he should not be risked as we have a huge number of important games coming up. I hope Benkovic is okay to play and with a bit of luck Griff will be fine as well despite a rumour of him not being 100%. We can take great heart from our last competitive game against St Johnstone and today I would like to see a line-up and game plan along similar lines. It’s extremely important to get a dominant grip of the midfield, closing down space and thereby helping to prevent the Hibs players
from surging forward in swift counter-attacks. Offensively we want to move the ball around quickly, varying play and constantly searching gaps to exploit. Playing with two main strikers whilst having plenty of attacking width provided by Forrest and Tierney should prove to be a real handful for the Hibs defence. Home advantage together with a sell-out crowd will hopefully count for something too.

Come on Celtic, bring me some badly-needed sunshine this afternoon!

Gordon

Lustig Benkovic Boyata Tierney

McGregor Rogic Ntcham

Forrest Griffiths Edouard

Subs: Bain, Gamboa, Simunovic, Mulumbu, Christie, Morgan, Sinclair

Prediction: Celtic 3 (Edouard, Rogic, Forrest) Hibs 2 (Mallan, Kamberi)

Should be a helluva game!

Lennon would be a backward step. We already have an excellent manager who, properly supported, will continue to be successful here and do better in Europe.

100%.

Both Mowbray and Stubbs did very well at Hibs and stank the place out elsewhere. This is no grounding for a Celtic manager.

Lennon failed appallingly at Bolton and until he goes elsewhere eg English Championship and is a roaring success, he should be nowhere near the Celtic job.

SteveNaive

I concur. He was strolling alone through Edinburgh Airport and stopped for a quick picture with two of my lads. Great for the club but so was Big Jock and MON. I wish him every success but we need to support who we have and stop doing the chip wrappers job for them. You can’t tie a hand behind his back and then say he’s not as good as he’s been.iIt will happen eventually but I’d bust the bank for an Eddie Howe.

FFS, Hibs lost 4 goals in the Faroes!

Lennon did well as manager but it came to a natural end and he’s done nothing since to justify having a second spell.

We vastly raised the bar when Rodgers was appointed and when he goes we should be aiming for the same high standard and not someone who’s level is Hibs ala Mowbray and Stubbs.

We’ve just won a double treble and whilst some games were poor( which team doesn’t) the thing is to win. I know a Hibs ST holder and some of the goals they lose are a joke. They will only ever win the odd trophy and not in the same ball park as Celts. Of cours NL would be good for them and they are so glad to have him. Remember Neil understandably wanted out and the pressure that comes with us could get to him again. I disagree about BB and working his ticket, he is Celtic minded but I feel is frustrated, as was NL, about investment in the team.

What a game! So many excellent performances. My man of the match would be McGregor who played in three positions throughout the game. What an engine he has! Other great performances were Ntcham and Rogic(first half), Edouard for his goals and passing, and James Forrest. In fact, the whole team, Gordon’s great one handed save; Benkovic and Boyata at the back, and Tierney. The negatives? Lustig is poor on one one ones when the opposition has pace; Brown should not have been risked, and Sinclair…was he in the game in the second half.

A great advert for Scottish football. We shall win the league.

A high tempo roller-coaster of a game which was very similar to how I had imagined it would be like. Absolutely delighted to take full points after a bit of a scare late on. Our best football played this season was packed into those first 20 minutes or so and the number of clear cut chances we carved out was astonishing. I can’t remember if it was 5 or 6 times that we hit the woodwork and Ntcham missed a sitter in the second half. There were some fine performances by several players but I’d like to give a special mention to Calmac, who deputised well for the injured Brown, and Phil Benkovic, who looked very solid at the back. MOTM must go to big Odsonne who deserved his hatrcik and played some scintillating stuff. Some great goals with the pick of the bunch definitely being our first one scored by Rogic. An absolute gem. The only concerns are Broonies injury (I don’t think he should’ve started this game) and the lapses of concentration leading to the Hibs goals but, overall, a great match from the spectators’ point of view. I expect the European tie against the Germans and the league cup semi to be cracking games as well. Well done the Hoops and mon the Accies the morra!

Just seen the Barça v Sevilla game which had just a touch of déjà vu about it. After a whirlwind start the home side’s captain and star player, Leo Messi is taken off with a worrying injury on the 20 minute mark. The score was 2-0 at the time. HT: 2-0. The second half provided a very open game with loads of end to end stuff and, guess what? FT: 4-2. Pretty uncanny to say the least.
