Want to Win 1- Dont want to lose 0

An hour before the game we were getting told old Magic Hat Mark had came up with a shock selection and thrown a total tactical curve ball into the mix by playing 2 right backs and changing the keeper..

Says a lot about Kieran Tierney when Warbs plays 2 right backs against him but lets be fair and say the change of keeper did indeed produce positive results for old “Please tell me Im good” Warbution as Matt Gilks had one of the games of his life. The keeper single handled and single legged tried to keep Celtic from breaking through but thankfully persistence ( and 2 dynamic subs!) paid off and a brilliant reverse backheel double nutmeg by Dembele saw the Hoops through after what had been quite an irritating afternoon up at the Mount Florida Masons HQ.

The result was 1-0 but in truth only 1 team went out to win the game and thankfully for the sake of us and the sake of football,  they did. Warbutons side seemed to be following a tactic of  “Just kill the game” as his side started playing for time from the very start and delayed every throw-in, and every goal kick lasted an eternity.

Kenny Miller seemed to be trying out his best “Pantomine Villian”  routine and  it was embarrasing to watch at times as he argued about anything and held then threw the ball away from Celtic players after fouls. No doubt of course being praised by the studio analysts for “holding Celtic”. Yeah its easy to hold a team by trying to stop the ball actually being in play. Genius Tactics!

stats1

As for Celtic, the stats ( thanks BBC) show we rained down on them but the final product just wasnt there today but we did get over the line so thinking positively, it was job done after a harsh football lesson midweek against BMG so well done for the team and management getting the result and booking that final place.

For the forwards there is a need for some extra shooting practise in training as we should have scored at least 4. For Brendan  there is a reminder to execute Plan B  earlier when its clear Plan A isnt fully working. It wasnt until the substitution of the slow and sideways Bitton and Rogic for the direct  and forward driving Armstrong and Griffiths that Celtic finally pulled away from the cloggers in blue.

Hopefully the final against Aberdeen will be a totally different game and both sides will attempt to win the Trophy rather than one side holding out for penalties. Then again Derek McInnes might have similar thoughts in mind so we better prepare ourselves for another long day awaiting that late winner yet again.

Ratings

 Gordon – 6

Nothing really to do in respect to saving goal attempts. Distribution could have been better and quicker.  I think it would be harsh to criticise the keepers punts up the park as we should have players who can bring the ball out from the back and save Gordon that annoying kicking routine which just kept gifting the ball back to the opposition.

Tierney – 6

Playing against 2 right backs was Warbs attempts to nullify any attacks from Tierney and while it wasnt Tierneys greatest game, he still got forward when possible and interestingly found his partner swapping from Sinclair to Forrest to Sinclair again through the game.

Jozo – 6

Solid at the back and made one good block from a Holt shot on goal in second half. The bringing the ball out from the back was rather limited though and too often it was sideways and back again but the whole side need to work on that area including movement of backs and midfielders.

Erik – 6.5

Gets and extra point for scoring a goal only for Craig the Mason, i mean Ref declaring Lee Wallace is a gentle flower who should never be brushed aside by anyone. Kept it simple and getting to be reliable and hopefully the partnership with Jozo will continue to blossom.

Lustig – 6

Found himself on the wrong side a few times as opponent tried ball over the top but stood up to the challenge wisely rather than diving in and giving the ref a decision to make. Mikel also tried to get up the park a few times to try and help in attack.

Bitton – 5

Sideways and pedestrian was never going to suit a game where the opponents were biting at the ankles. The Languid style is lovely when space and time is given but with every game lately more and more people getting exasperated with Nir’s contribution. Subbed for Armstong.

Broonie – 8

Captain Marvel. Ran about like he was full of Red Bull and never gave the opponents a moment and a truly inspirational performance, expecially in the first half. We could really just do with another one alongside.

Forrest – 6

A few chances at goal that went wide and played a great ball in first half that Lustig should have did more with in truth. While Forrest is doing okay and his fitness levels are impressing, he will be feeling Patrick Roberts breathing down his neck  as not currently making that clinical impact in final third.

Rogic – 5

One of those “Och!” Tom Rogic games. Seemed a bit off the pace and then when handed the ball at his feet right outside an open goal, Tom sadly took that half second too long and fluffed his shot. Tried a few runs along the 18 yard line and shooting but it just wasnt happening and was subbed for Griffiths and may well fear losing his starting position for Ross County midweek or up at Pittodrie.

Sinclair – 6

Could have scored a few today but for some great goal keeping from Gilks. Tried to drive forward but it was still one of those games were Sinclair would have done more to grab that game by the throat ( ala Broonie) as at times he just seems to drift out the game. Scott did seem to find his second wind and purpose when Griffiths came on so it might be that Rogic, Sinclair, Dembele triangle that needs looked at by Brendan as well as his good interaction with the drives of the positive Armstrong.

Dembele – 7

Up to Griffiths coming on, this was looking like a score of 5 for Dembele. He did play a great ball for Sinclair in the first half but a lot of the match saw him lose ball after ball to his opponent or end up on the deck looking at the ref. Then came the change and Dembele fell back a little and allowed Griff to drag the back line of the Opponents. Sure enough thats where the goal game from and the back heel was a brilliant piece of composure to double nutmeg a defender and the keeper  and the celebration was a joy to behold.

Subs

Armstrong – 7

Gets a high score for making a great impact and driving Celtic towards the finish line. Dynamic on and off the ball and made plenty happen when he appeared on the pitch. Will hope for a start at County or  Pittodrie but even if not next week, the chance will come after such great performances.

Griffiths – 7

The crowd cheered loudly when SuperLeigh stood on the sidelines awaiting the swap with Tom Rogic. I imagine inside our opponents hearts sank. Griff was soon dragging the game, this way and that and Lee Wallace is still wondering how he got into that space to drive the ball across for Dembeles goal. Should have scored near the end when through 1 on 1 with Gilks but tried a chip rather than hard drive. Booked for a curious moment when kicking the ball into the crowd when he seemed to think there was already one in play but when you watch Dembeles celebration, its lucky he didnt get booked for his “hibs tribute” celebration dive into the crowd so he wont mind that yellow!

Gamboa – 4

One for last few minutes, no chance to make an impact but helped close the game out.

Manager

 Rodgers – 7

During the game, up until 70 minutes of so, I admit I was cursing our Brendan. Everyone bar Broony had the ball going back, sideways, back, sideways and we were crying out for some direct attacks played through the middle on the ground. Warbs had decided to close down any midfield space and played a high defensive line which cramped the Celtic style and we hadnt taken any of the chances on offer while our star striker stood waiting on the sidelines.

All we seemed to have as a Plan B was Gordon punting the ball to a Moussa Dembele who did not seem to be enjoying his afternoon up against the aerial challenges of Hill and Kiernan. At half time, I hoped we would make the changes but Brendan kept his trust in his starting XI for another 15 minutes before making the executive decisions needed.

The introduction of Armstrong delivered the impetus needed and then bringing on Griffiths 10 minutes later closed the winning deal. Those two players changed the game from one in which we were dominant but blunt to one where we were dominant and driving down on goal.

Armstrong had and made some great chances and whilst he had the opponents heading backwards, more importantly he had fellow Celts, Sinclair and Dembele finally charging forward facing the goal rather than awaiting high and hopeful kick outs from Gordon.

Griffiths was that extra special touch that had the opponents totally bemused trying to understand his pace and movement whilst wondering where Dembele was now playing. They soon found out when Griffiths outside of the boot low drive was touched in by Dembele to rapturous applause and a big Brendan smile with a few minutes to go.

After a hard week, Im happy to say Well Done and allow the Manager and players to take on the lessons needing learnt after BMG and this game. More and more sides will try and curtail us in this nullifying fashion and  more players need to take ownership driving us forward and Brendan will have to look to make changes earlier, or even between games to keep our side fresh as well as keep the opposition guessing on whats coming next.

Bottom line is we are in the final thanks to the Manager and his personnel. Thats all we asked for before the game and its actually a positive that a few of our side have real competition for their places as over the next few intense weeks for the club, every player will need to be at the top of their game.

Jozo a 6? Don’t think so he was superb; equal MOTM with Broonie

Thought Jozo was good today. Sinclair in my opinion contributed little as did Dembele – goal aside – but hey thats what he’s there for ! Dominated the game and they are indeed a new wee team in the big league, could’ve been so much more but we’re in a final – take that anytime especially after the past couple of years and our record at the midden that is our national stadium HH

Once again the ref tried to be the main man in front of the camera`s. What a show of sectarianism he showed against Celtic. He tried to square it up by not booking Dumbele for diving, but chalking off a good goal and giving sevco foul after foul and denying Celtic foul after foul. What a great way to beat sevco, scoring with three minutes to go, which could easily been five, and winning the game they did not try to win. Back too the “breed board” warbs and try another lump of dough. (or lumps of different dough)

I understand everyone’s frustration with Bitton, but for Bitton I actually thought he was more direct and creative than usual. For a large portion of the second half Forrest’s name wasn’t uttered, and that is unlike him this season. Rogic did seem to have one of those games. Jozo played well, but I still think “rotating” him with Kolo will reduce the chance of injury while allowing Sviachenko to become th main man in defense. What a difference when Armstrong came on and when Griff came on suddenly they didn’t know their Arse from their elbow!

A true gulf in class showed today, poor choices and finishing as well as a ref. who only lifted his arm pointing one way, the Rankers way,was the only difference between 5-1 and 1-0.
Jozo looked like the player we thought he was, baring in mind we had a big game on Wednesday,i thought that the team did good,Broony is showing us that he still is a great player,he just needs to rest his body,Scotland!s loss is our gain.
I look forward to a busy few games to stretch away and for 1/2 new first team signings in Midfield in Jan.

Good outcome today, if the 5-1 game was 3-1 ( Warbs world, wherever that is) then this was a 3-0 victory to Celtic. The gap may not be as big as everyone thinks, it might be bigger.(See 3-0) above at out recent hoodoo ground.

Difficult week ahead travelling to Dingwall and then Aberdeen, I hope, at least against Ross County, Dembelle, Tierney, Sinclair, maybe some others get a rest . Griffiths, Armstrong, Christie and Roberts can do a job and then some. Celtic support was super today not nasty but right on our opponents. How do they ever recover from ” You’re not Rsngers anymore.”

Fantastic result today after a tough week.
I thought Broony was man of the match and both Jozo and Forrest were superb.
Personally, I’d have subbed Bitton after 30 as he done nothing but slow the play down. Armstrong was superb when he came on for the last 30 and Griffiths put in a fantastic shift for the last 20.
We knew going into this match with Thomson in charge that we’d get bugger all and we weren’t surprised, my only shock and that of many people on the bus was that we actually thought he’d given a penalty to them in first half before actually booking Mckay. The decision to disallow Sviatchenko’s goal is yet another of his shockers and despite seeing replays I’m not convinced that the Sinclair foul want a penalty.
Great ball by Griffiths for Dembele’s goal and
as per Ralph’s comments on seeing replays be was lucky not to be booked for his celebrations here.
Unfortunate when he did get booked though as Thomson blew whistle 3 times for a throw in which Leigh thought was him blowing for full time.
As my friend said, if we can’t stuff them, the next best thing is to beat them late on.
All we wanted was the final.
Can’t do the treble without the Diddy cup! HH

Whit a travesty, every one is out to get them, wonder why?
The so called rfeferee was 5he usual standard barer for them, but does not matter the good won.
Thought Jojj looked the part but Bitton was poor, when Armstrong came on things picked up, when Griff came on it got even better.
It was 1-0 going on 5-0
They will now be it t get the Magic Hat, as usual the board is not to blame

I have decided although I am not a religious man to pray for Mark Warburton. I hope he keeps his job. He is an idiot who is never wrong, can’t manage, lives in his own little world, but by Christian he’s a shit manager and I hope he stays at Rangers until his dying day.

Devoy45

1-0 really flattered the Zombies. Anything up to 5-0 would have been right. Our club really needs to look into Craig Thomson’s shenanigans. He has cost us dear over the last few years with his ‘honest’ mistakes. Brendan also needs to figure out a way to get Griffiths and Dembele on the pitch at the same time. Why not Leigh in the position Rogic has been in? I am so pleased with this club right now and with Brendan. We need to keep him here long enough for him to have a wee dynasty of his own. Five years would do it and 10 in a row! My older bones are sair but my Celtic heart is beating just fine. I have pride in being a Celt again.
Interesting thing Stateside. In the 1945 Championship baseball series between Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs, a Greek Chicago man paid for two seats, for himself and his goat ‘Murphy.’ The stewards said Murphy had to leave the stadium despite paying for his seat so the Greek put a curse on the Cubs saying they would never get into another Series until they paid Murphy enough respect. The Cubs are now in the Series for the first time since then (they last won it in 1908, Hibees are you listening?)The writer Irvine Welsh, a famous Hibee, now lives in Chicago and guess what….supports Murphy’s Curse. I have relatives in the Windy City and wish their Cubbies well in the best of seven championship against Cleveland. The Cubs have had a large Irish support over the years so have done all they can to respect Murphy’s memory.

Devoy,
Griffiths isn’t an attacking midfielder m8, Rogic is a good player.
We need to stop this wanting a player dropped on the back of one dodgy game.

Here are my observations on the game and this Season in general really…
In Craig Gordon we have a fairly competent Goalkeeper who is a fabulous shot stopper at any level.
He is however not the comlete article as his kicking and distribution at times shows.
If Brendan is insistent in playing it out from the back then he needs replacing.
Lustig does a decent job in defence but for me much like Izzy is at LB is prone to the ball over the top (done for pace) and drifts inside too much leaving gaps round the side for wingers to exploit.
He is a threat on the overlap and in the box on set pieces however.
Again I think and hope Gamboa is more suited to taking over in his role as a wingback because Lustig stamina isn’t up to it now.
In central defence we seem to be sorted now,Toure has has a massive part to play in this and the return to fitness of Jozo plus the ever improving Sviatchenko we seem to have a solid platform on which to build from.
Again the issue with Gordon is restricting this slightly and DeVries may or may not be the answer?
At Left back KT is doing a grand job though I do feel we are becoming ever so relient on him playing every minute of every game much like Izzy under Lenny?
My fear is fatigue or injury my curtail him at some point so Brendan should be using Izzy and rotating a bit more I feel?
If Izzy isn’t the answer then we need to find decent backup soon.
Tempting fate is never a great policy in football.
Central midfield is becoming the sticking point for me whilst Brown is like a new signing this season and if he had the Support he needs alongside him as seen yesterday he could be dictating games more in there?
Bitton in that regard is simply not cutting it at Celtic.
When Armstrong came in he totally changed the Dynamic I felt?
Same the other week when McGregor dropped in there his movement, aggression and energy gives Brown the freedom to Bomb about them breaking things up and getting things going again.
With Bitton it’s ponderous, sideways or backwards seldom is it quick ball out wide or forward and his tackling is diabolical at times?
Rogic is our best no 10 I feel though in games he can fade in and out at times he is still very dynamic on the ball and with his feet and physical presence very hard to knock off the ball without fouling?
His distribution is also very good like Commons previously he can deliver a beautiful defence splitting pass as well as pop up with the odd goal now and then.
Christie offers much the same I feel though he’s a bit behind development wise a decent player as well?
The wide areas are almost sorted now.
I think if Mackay-Steven can get back to the form shown at United and early in his Celtic career he can be decent backup for Sinclair on the left or even Roberts on the right when he eventually goes?
Up top Dembele is doing the one thing all strikers must do to survive at any Club.
He’s finding the net with great consistency even though at times I still feel he’s a good bit off being the finished article he’s proving to be very adept at being in the right spot at the right time?
Yesterday he was in and out of the game yet when it mattered most he was there to put it away with no shortage of skill?
Griffiths made an immediate impact but then after 40 goals last season are we suprised?
I’m not personally I think Griffiths will be here long after Dembele has sailed off to pastures new in the future?
Therein lies the problem for Brendan he has to keep the wee man interested and more importantly happy?
It has become very apparent that Brendan see’s 4-2-3-1 as his primary System?
A high percentage of games now both at Home and in Europe he has opted to go with the lone frontman?
Griffiths has proven beyond any shadow of doubt that this setup is perfect for his style of play.
40 goals do not lie he achieved those 40 goals under this same setup.
Leaving Griffiths parked on the bench when fit seems to me a bit odd considering both his experience and goal rate under previous Managers?
Brendan needs to sort this out I feel because resentment may well build up if he doesn’t and the wee man might just start looking elsewhere if it continues?
Dembele will be snapped up sooner rather than later at this rate so it makes sense to keep both happy and both firing to me?
As with the KT/Izzy situation rotation could be key if Brendan is planning to stick with the current system?
Failing that other Systems should be getting utilised I feel?
I think Brendan is leaving the changes a bit late in games where like yesterday it was obvious something needed to happen in order to win the game?
leaving it till 70 minutes when it’s 0-0 in a knockout is not a great idea IMO?
Had that blocked shot gone in we would have been panicking going into the last 20?
We have a big squad,we have decent back up perhaps just perhaps Brendan needs to start resting a few now and then and giving others like Armstrong,Christie,Izzy,Gamboa,O’Connell etc a run out to keep them all interested and up for it?
There is a heavy schedule ahead at Christmas we need to start getting ready for it.

Monti, I’m with you about the idea that why not play 4-4-2 in the league and see how Dembele and Griffiths do together? 4-4-2 has been very effective with some clubs in Europe, Atletic Madrid for instance. There are plenty of teams we could try that against. Charlie Saiz, good points, all of them. It’s the stuff we supporters think about all the time. What if…why not? Our team has weaknesses that need improved. I think Izzy should get more games and we need to be careful not to freeze Griffiths out.
