Celtic Diary Wednesday 25 May: Etims Credibility Takes Another Knock

Before we get to the shameful accuracy of yet another of our predictions, a quick mention that its forty nine years to the day that Celtic lifted the European cup.

Just in case no-one else reminds you.

And don’t let me hear anyone ever moan about the English and their constant harping on about 1966.

Right, on to more news that you got on here before it hit the papers.

Remember last week when we told you Neil Lennon was hinting to players  he’d got the job ?

Well, it appears he did think he had it….

“I was close to Celtic. I just got pipped by Brendan. I was interviewed last week and then I got the shout on Friday they were going to announce someone else.

“So I am doing the Euros with the BBC and Irish TV and then I have a couple of options when I get back.

We were aware that he was after the post, which isn’t really a scoop, we were also aware he was merely back up in case the primary targets weren’t interested, but he seemed to think that he was getting the job back.

Hence that bloody smug grin on his face when he was talking to players…

However, alls well that ends well, and its the bold Brendan rodgers who is now Celtic’s 18th manager-when I was a lad we were on our fifth- and 18 is my lucky number.

It was when I was allowed beer, which made me the man I am today.

Rodgers has already got his head down and started work…

Since I was appointed I’ve looked at every single goal Celtic have scored and conceded.

“I know where there are areas we can improve on and gain. That’s important for us. I probably started doing that a wee bit before I was appointed. I had the idea I was coming.”

This is a club that expects to win titles and be competitive in Europe. The measure will be on both and that’s what I’m driven to achieve,”  “They fell short last year on a couple of set-pieces. That’s what stopped them going through.

“I’ll need to assess things and I’ll need to look. There are some good players here and some young talents.

“I can look and identify all I want from a distance. You always have an idea of how to change things and there are one or two players I’ll want to bring in, but I want to look and speak to the players who are here.

“Hopefully then the ideas will be empowered by them.”

As usual, hacks tried to remind him of the English Premier league;

“Football is football – you represent the team and you go anywhere with them whether it’s up the road or in Europe.

“I’m looking forward to this job. It’s different. I’ve had five years in the Premier League and that’s great.

“I’m 43 and if I’ve to have another 20 years of management in me then I was never always going to be in the premier league and would never want that.

“I’m here now at a club I love and a team I want to do well with and also one that I have an affinity with and that’s what excites me.”

And that, in a nutshell, is what excites the support.

We often speak of a player, such as Keiran Tierney, living the dream.

Maybe we have a manager who is living it….

“When I used to see the stadium here when I was younger, it was full, One of the times I came here they were building the stands but I remember European nights when Martin was here as manager with sixty odd thousand in attendance.

“This is a club that has that support – and more. So when I hear and see that the top end of the Lisbon Lions Stand had been shut down for the last couple of years because it wasn’t getting filled then that gave me a big motivation to get people in there to watch the team play football.

“Maybe the competition hasn’t been there but I’ve come here believing this is an incredible club and I’m really looking forward to working in the league. Of course, it’s different – there are more glamorous surroundings to go and work in. But I have a real passion to do well here. There are well respected clubs here and if I’ve come in and given things a lift then so beat it.”

I’m fairly sure he means “so be it “.

Then again, he could be talking directly to the hack.

Well, we all thought it would be easy with a proven manager in charge, but promoted pretenders “rangers ” have upped the stakes, signing, somewhat surprisingly, IRA sympathiser and anti Royalist Joey Barton, much to the delight of Ibrox fans everywhere.

Its unlikely that Colin Smith will name any of his children after the player, for instance. Then again, Joseph was never the most popular name amongst that lot.

Barton, of course, was tremendously upset when the old club died,

and wants to help put the new club back where they belong, and it appears that he’s added a scriptwriter, presumably the same one who does the club statements.

You’ll note that it’s asistant boss David Weir who is introducing him to the world, and nit Missing Mark Warburton, who still hasn’t appeared since the Cup final, amidst growing concerns for his well being.

We hear he’s okay, just pondering his next move…

and how come he is in such an exotic location ?

Well, the Green Brigade, in an act of mercy, spotted only by Joe fix on twitter, who happened to film it, smuggled him out at the end of the Cup Final, after they stormed the pitch in borrowed Hibernian scarves, to lead him to safety from disgruntled “rangers ” fans.

Another story you won’t see in the media.

Don’t believe me?

Watch this exclusive video…

Warburton smuggled out after Cup final-by the Green Brigade

Now to Celtic, and Brendan Rodgers and here’s a name that might crop up again, and if it doesn’t, at least the Diary will get its credibility back.

Sandro. Over at West Brom.

Tottenham Hotspur's Sandro during training

Sandro has spent the last six months on loan at English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, but his future remains uncertain, with The Express and Star reporting the Baggies are yet to make up their minds whether they want to sign him permanently.

The midfielder is still only 27 and has vast experience in European football, signing with Spurs early in his career, where he earned the nickname The Beast.

A Copa Libertadores winner in South America with Internacional, Sandro also impressed in Tottenham’s Champions League run the last time they were in the competition, starring against AC Milan.

Known as the Beast-not that sort, you’re thinking of someone else-for his no nonsense style, if there really is a credible threat from the presence of Joey Barton, this loon could be just the man to put him in his place.

Is there a credible threat ? Can Barton become the number one player in Scotland, as he seems to think ?

Like Ian Wright, Carlton Cole, Roy Keane, and one or two others, he is about to find out that Scottish football is a little bit faster and a little bit meaner than what he, a little bit older, is perhaps used to.

Mind you, he’s confident enough.

Burnley were rewarding him for last year with a new one year contract, but he had been told that he would feature only occasionally, his ego has taken him north. Thats the story here.

A story you won’t find in the Scottish media.

The story you will read will be along these lines;

The 33-year-old said his move came after being seduced by the history of Rangers, but he was reminded on social media of tweets sent in the past stating his support for the other half of Glasgow.

Ah, the history. Well, it wouldn’t have taken him long to read it.

And fifty four titles in four years is pretty impressive.

What it means in reality is that almost all of their transfer warchest, as it were, has gone on one player, with three exiting.

At least it means they won’t sign anyone who is any good, and a number of Premier sides may now look at a couple of free agents who could do them a turn.

And there’s news, courtesy of Comedians For Yes on twitter, of further events down Ibrox way…

Yes, I know, 49 years since Lisbon, and I’m talking about them.

You know why ?

Because Lisbon is the very reason that we can talk and laugh about the mess they’re in, as one mans obsession eventually made them what they are today.

Deaded.

Like joey Bartons wee lego man before his new pals see it.

There’s been talk of an Etims get together, which is fine by me. any excuse for a beer and a chat about football.

But lets be grown up about this, and try to organise it properly. First of all, we need an idea of numbers, to see where it could be held.

So, if you think you’d like to be there, a wee note in the replies.

Don’t worry, it won’t be one of those do’s where you have to pay to get in. We’ll just find a pub or something and have some beers. Probably one next to a chippy.

The adverts on Resolution 12 go live today, notably in the Grauniad, as the Summer Of Contentment moves to the next stage…

Caption competition, I’d give it to Half fool, who commented on another picture, the one with Leigh Griffiths and the league trophy, claiming that it was Griffiths was cutting down on the bevvy to impress the new gaffer.

Today, your thoughts on this  blast from the past… when football was played by men who had just done the morning shift in the pit, and the football was just a break before they headed to work a night shift on security at the docks..

Happy fucking days Bhoys, I still think I’m pished from my Leith visit on Saturday.
My mood is starting to get serious tho because I’m keen to see the level of player brought in, I think we will sign 3 or 4 players who are way above the level we have witnessed recently, I hope tho that we don’t go down the loan route, Roberts is enough, we shouldn’t be developing other clubs players.
I would be happy with 4 new signings as long as they are top drawer, a central defender, a playmaker in midfield and a top drawer striker to partner Leigh Griffiths, but above that I want one individual in the team who takes the piss out of the opposition…regularly.
Bertie Auld always mentions ” Entertain the fans ” he is so, so right.
Give us a winger who fucking destroys opposition full backs.
But first we must start with the back door (not in the port sense, although my Xbox can’t take much more attention), we need central defenders who can play, defend and have genuine pace, they cost money I know well we’ll just need to fucking find it.
Joey Barton? Who gives a fuck about the wee ned fuck, Broony smash him in the first minute and tell him in the fucking tunnel what is going to happen.
E-Tims day/night out? I’ll email a few ideas but as a location Dundee has to be ruled out, it’s a shithole, full of Junkies and pickpockets.

Amsterdam, what a town. Went there in the early 80’s. We were welcomed with a slap-up meal, lots of nice wine, (nae Lanny though) and a free bar for the night. I knew some guys already working there and, strangely enough, they arrived to join in at the free bar.
We nearly bankrupted Fokker’s Aircraft Factory that night. They asked us near the end of the week when they got the bill to chip in a bit. Well, in the best interests of Dutch/British (there were English guys too) relations we told them where to go.
Aye, great town.

RE the get-the-gither. I suggested a way of organising it on yesterday’s site. Dedicated addy set up by someone with the time to answer, people respond stating their moniker.

Date suggested and venue picked, and info only by e-mail. You don’t want hunterlopers wi some bravery pills making an appearance.

From experience, the meetings snowball to a fair old size.

I’d offer my services but I’m 400 miles away-I’m far from a regular appearance on here, never mind Glasgow!

Good luck with it. You’ll have a ball, and wonder why you argue wi each other on here but not in person-honest.

MB,

I am not sure why Brendan would consider that. He was asked a similar question at the presser and replied that he did not think it was necessary to have someone in his team that was familiar with Scottish football. What would Hughes role be? Kennedy will have the defensive role again and knows our game. Davies will be the first team coach and assistant.

Have I missed something?

Rebus

Vinnie

Reply to  Rebus67

Rebus, I sincerely hope you have missed something; something like “John Kennedy’s also leaving”. If he was the defensive coach, as I presume he was, then watching our defenders get ‘caught in the head-lights’ and ball-watching had a lot to do with him. Ditto positioning at corners and other set-pieces.
IMO, he’s got to go too. Let Brendan sort out who and what he needs and then let him get on with the job. Only then can we tell how good he really is, and I’ve got every ‘faith’ in him, if I can use that word. 🙂

Vinnie, I actually think we got stronger at defending set pieces in the final half of the season.
Celtic seemed to be the punchbag surrounding the loss of goals from set play, yet you see it in every league in Europe. A great quality ball in no matter if you set up man marking or zonal,is going to give you problems.
I think we were lost in the first part of the season, players who should have done better, didn’t. constant changes to the back 4 didn’t help either.
The final third of the season we coped well with set plays,as the back 4 became settled.
Hopefully we will get a strong centre back who us also a leader to take charge, and instal the steel we need.
HH

Reply to  Jimmybee

Jimmybee, the only reason we got better at the back is because we signed Sviet. He provided the strenght and the leadership and settled us down at the back, especialy when he played with Mulgrew.Ambrosia and Boyata are not good at all and you are correct we need another centreback to form a good and settled back four.
Sumanovitch to me has glass ankles, never seen very much of him and he to was a P.L.purchase

I think he would be a good leveller for Brendan and he knows the Scottish game as well as anyone, plus his love for the tic.

Let me show my higorance. What position did your Yogi play? To me there is only one Yogi and he played CH but usually LW during the Stein era. Famously, I remember him playing in “sannies” in a frozen field and destroying the opposition.

So where did the ex-ICT manager play?

Rebus

Reply to  Rebus67

Rebus, the original John (yogi) Hughes,is the one we both remember, the support used to call out Feed The Bear, hence the nickname Yogi.
Played as striker or winger,he missed out on Lisbon through injury, but played a stormer against Leeds in the semis in 1970,ran Jack Charlton ragged.Big Jock pushed him out the door and Yogi never forgave him.
The newar John (yogi)Hughes played for the tic as a central defender,he carries a wee bit of a hardman rep and left ICT as Manager 1/2 weeks back,he fell out with the Chairman over player budgets.

Rebus67

I think Neil Lennon has realised, like many before him, it is downhill after leaving Celtic. Few can get back to the club after leaving. None of our recent managers have hit the same heights as their time at the club, with the possible exception of MON.
They may make more money but they do not get the emotional highs, nor the same significance of their role.
Although Neil may be disappointed now, this is the best outcome for both the club and him.
Good luck, Neil. You deserve it.

Rebus, you are correct, there is no after Cellic as Manager,
its all downhill afterwards.Having said that how many have turned there back on the Tic when they moved doon to the Moneypit that is Engerland and only wish to come back when they blew it down there.
That is why its special to see someone turn there backs on England and commit to here. There are no adequate words to describe that level of love and commitment.Same with players like Broony who has turned down the chance to leave for there and why Henckie is the ledgend that he is,turning his back on so much wealth to commit to the tic.
Tommy Burns,Paul Mcstay and others should be cherished for there love of the club.

Thank you Ralph. I will cherish this honour for the rest of my remaining. It’s right up there with my cycle proficiency badge 🙂

Tommy Burns should be honoured BIG time. Renaming the Lennoxtown Academy for TB would be fit and proper; especially in light of his dedication towards Celtic and its the future development.

Doug, came up with the best solution for a wee shindig, have it at Cellic Park.We are E=Tims, give the money to the club.
E-Tims is Cellic gie it to the club.
Only 10% commision to Mikey, well i have two season tickets to buy.
The first round is on charlie,
The second round is on Monti.
The third round is on Andy,(he needs to get hame early to bed).
The fourth round is on Ralphy,Whits that about Ralphy.
The fifth round is on Bgbhoy, well you get my drift.

Hi guys,
Saw the wee debate re “Yogi”…
The info. came from the same guy who told me about BR a week before it happened.
You’ll note I said he’s “considering” Yogi…its not a done deal…but John Kennedy’s jaiket is on a shoogly nail.

Just to clarify Andy…
I never said assistant…
He’d be part of backroom staff…
IF it happens.

Mike it still would be good,as an ex central defender and with his SPFL knowledge,i think that would be a good fit.

If it’s big Yogi would that be to keep our wee hunskelper Stokesy in line ?? Seen that BR has appointed HIS assistant .. Something that Ronny either couldn’t or wouldn’t do … Which is after all completely unusual …
Signed and forwarded on the petition .. Think as someone who was instrumental in the creation of Lennoxtown then I think it’s only fitting that he gets his name added ! Have been in Santos and their training camp is named after Rei Pelé.
Would be up for a get together to witness “live” the banter between Monti and his good friend Charlie Saiz 🙂

It is very important to get your back room team complete, with the people you trust most. I don’t know if Hughes would fit in.
In Brendan we trust.
