If you ever wondered whether you should buy the Ibrox Evening Times again, have a look at the headline here. Remember, this is a club posting a profit of nearly £12 million.
Celtic chairman Ian Bankier admits to frustrating season as
figures reveal Virgil van Dijk sale plugged financial hole of
Champions League exit.
Thats a half year profit, and yes, a big part of it was the development and sale of a player, though presumably the Times thinks that money from this part of the business doesn’t count.
Its another Scottish club posting a profit, and a healthy one at that. Which will enable them to stay in business, and not be the focus of spivs, crooks and conmen hell bent on fleecing the support.
And they couldn’t wait to quote the most depressing part of chairman Iain Bankier’s statement to the stock exchange-proper, grown up clubs with accountants and revenue streams have to report to the stock exchange, a concept Times reporters will be unfamiliar with.
“On the park, it has been a frustrating season,”
“We are top of the Scottish Premiership and in the sixth round of the Scottish Cup, but we fell short in the SPFL League Cup, being knocked out in the semi-final.
“In the European competitions, we were unable to progress beyond the group stages of the Uefa Europa League, having not qualified for the group stages of the Uefa Champions League.
“Our profit on disposal of intangible assets of £12.6m (2014: £7.1m) largely reflects the transfer of the registration of Virgil Van Dijk to Southampton.
“Over the same period, we reinvested in the playing squad, with £6.1m expended (2014: £5.7m) on the registrations of Scott Allan, Logan Bailly, Carlton Cole, Ryan Christie, Nadir Ciftci, Saidy Janko and Jozo Simunovic.
“Subsequently, during the 2016 January transfer window, further investment has been made with the signing of Danish international Erik Sviatchenko and Turkish international Colin Kazim-Richards.
“The board considers that our self-sustaining model allows the club to look to the future with reasonable optimism.
“We sit at the heart of developments in football, both at home and in Europe, being represented by Peter Lawwell on the board of the Scottish FA, the European Club Association and on the Club Competitions Committee at UEFA. Eric Riley also serves as a director of the Scottish Professional Football League.
“The strategy of the board is unchanged. Our overwhelming priority is to win the SPFL Premiership and to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.”
Gleefully, the Times announced ” Bankier also reported that the club’s failures in Europe will have an obvious effect on finances.”
“Looking forward to the second half, as with previous years, trading performance in the remaining months of this financial year will not be at the same level as that in the first six months (or the comparable period in 2014), with fewer home matches scheduled, no participation in European competition and lower expected gain on player sales.”
The second half figures will also not include season book money , which is a fair chunk of revenue as well, and is traditionally lower than the first half figures.
But hey, lets mention Europe, and see if we can make Timmy feel a little more miserable.
Yes, Europe is done for this year, and there’s nothing we can do about that.
But surely some sort of massive street party is needed to show our gracious thanks that the club made so much money even without champions League participation.
We should have scarves and hats made up showing the amount of money that is the clubs pre tax profit. ( for any Ibrox Evening Times reporters reading, thats the amount of money made before a tax payment is submitted. For most clubs, the two amounts differ. )
Oh come on, there’s a game today and surely the board deserve a song or two for steering the club through the financial wilderness ?

DAFABET are lining-up a big-money deal to become Celtic’s main shirt sponsors.
Currently a betting partner of the Parkhead club, the company are ready to secure the biggest agreement of its kind in Scottish football.
Celtic signed a three-year contract at the beginning of the 2013-14 season for Magners to be on the front of the shirts but Dafabet are set to take over for 2016-17.
Founded in 2004, Dafabet have moved increasingly into the football market in recent years having initially signed up England international Alan Shearer as Asian Sports Ambassador five years ago.

They need to start thinking about how we feel, and not how they think we feel.

As far as I remember DD wrote a cheque for 8m to ensure that Celtic FC did not go under and supported the Fergus rebuilding eventually becoming the biggest shareholder. So while Fergus was the face and some of the money DD was behind it with more money. Football clubs have to be operated within rules. Some operate with large debts knowing full well that the size of the club and the league they play in presents little chance of them ever going under. We are in a different world from that. We need to run a surplus to be able to do anything because it’s unlikely any bank in the world would lend us money in the SPFL. Also all the talk about if I was a billionaire … is silly we aren’t billionaires and I’m sure those who are have most of that wealth tied up in business assets rather than money. Good result today. Here are my thoughts on the team.
Lustig played well, was more aggressive than last two outings.
Boyata brave goal, some good defensive headers, passing still off sometimes.
Chenko another good performance. He needs a goal and we’ll see him score more.
Tierney amazing performance. While others pass horizontally, he is prepared to make forward passes and to take players on.
Brown still finding his way back, still effective.
Bitton slow, caught in possession, a luxury player at the moment.
GMS an enigma, incredible work rate and speed, plays cute flicks that are low percentage passes, an “almost” man.
Jo Hansen better today, effective.
Armstrong good crosser, but too easily brushed aside. Disappointing, I had high hopes for him.
Griffiths if he is stopped where will the goals come from? Emerging as more than a goal scorer.
JF time to move on, James. You need to be in a different team.
CKR. Will not be pushed off the ball, could emerge as a real bargain.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree, Nir Bitton is an extremely high quality player, he does need to speed his feet up though, can be ponderous!
He will be sold for profit needs to cut out those pirouettes 20 yards out from goal putting too much pressure on the CB’s when he gets caught dallying.
Wanyama had a similar issue on arrival but quickly got shot of it after a few months.

I was amazed they let him and Fraser go if I am honest they looked the part at Celtic and haven’t looked too bad since.

I agree Monti but both those two looked solid in the development think Frasers injury put him back but Irvine did well on loan.
