Celtic Diary Saturday February 13: Bank Balance Triumph Unites Fans

If you ever wondered whether you should buy the Ibrox Evening Times again, have a look at the headline here. Remember, this is a club posting a profit of nearly £12 million.

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier admits to frustrating season as

figures reveal Virgil van Dijk sale plugged financial hole of

Champions League exit.

Thats a half year profit, and yes, a big part of it was the development and sale of a player, though presumably the Times thinks that money from this part of the business doesn’t count.

Its another Scottish club posting a profit, and a healthy one at that. Which will enable them to stay in business, and not be the focus of spivs, crooks and conmen hell bent on fleecing the support.

And they couldn’t wait to quote the most depressing part of chairman Iain Bankier’s statement to the stock exchange-proper, grown up clubs with accountants and revenue streams have to report to the stock exchange, a concept  Times reporters will be unfamiliar with.

The club may look forward with reasonable optimism, but do the fans ?

While they have their bonuses to look forward to, we have little to get excited about. In england, the clubs could function financially if they dropped all admission charges and let fans in for nothing, thanks to the new sky Deal, based on last seasons figures.

Are the board now trying to raise money without the fans, just in case we finally get sick of them and don’t bother turning up ?

They need to start thinking about how we feel, and not how they think we feel.

For instance, here’s the guide to todays matchday experience, which is a summary of the effort the club puts in for the fans… just in case you’re debating whether or not to go along…

9:00am

Celtic Superstore opens. There’s still time to indulge the love of your life’s passion for the Hoops and grab a last minute Celtic St Valentine’s Day gift – we’ve a great selection of gift ideas available.

Reductions continue in the store for all 2015/16 New Balance Celtic kits, pick-up an adult shirt for £39 or a kid’s shirt for just £29 (saving £11). We’ve also 10% off selected New Balance training kit.

10:30am

The Ticket Office at Celtic Park opens. Supporters can buy or collect tickets for today’s game right up until kick-off at 3p.m. Tickets for the second part to our Highland double header against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on February 20 will also be on sale. You’ll find all the latest Celtic ticket information here.

12:00pm

The Kerrydale Bar doors open. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis with both the food court and bar open from midday. QPR v Fulham and Sunderland v Manchester United will be shown live from 12.30pm and Liam McGrandles provides his usual pre-match entertainment, playing all your favourite Celtic songs.

1.30pm

Stadium opens.

We’ve a bumper day planned for our young fans at the BT Sport Celtic Family Stand (Sections 115 – 117 of Lisbon Lions Lower). Our amazing resident face painter is back by popular demand, while the team from Topps will be handing out Match Attax trading cards. As well as our usual Xbox games zone, Hoopy the Huddle Hound will be on hand to meet fans before the game.

The official matchday programme will be available around Celtic Park and for a special combined price of just £4 fans can also get their hands on the latest issue of the Celtic View.

There’s another chance to scoop £10,000 on Saturday with the Paradise Windfall. Tickets will be available throughout the stadium until kick-up off and the lucky winner will be picked at half-time. Look out for Windfall staff wearing the famous yellow jerseys.

3pm

Kick-off. It’s time to back the Bhoys to victory! C’mon the Hoops!

4.45pm

On the final whistle, the Kerrydale Bar re-opens and Liam McGrandles will again be performing. We’ll also have live action with Livingston v Hibernian and Chelsea v Newcastle United showing before the bar closes at 7pm.

There’s still time to get your tickets for the game ONLINE, by calling 0871 226 1888*, by visiting the Ticket Office at Celtic Park or from selected Celtic stores; Argyle Street, Clydebank, Coatbridge, East Kilbride, Greenock.

So, at 9am , the shop opens, an hour and a half later the ticket shop opens, then a further hour and a half later the bar opens.

give it another hour and a half and the ground opens, in case the kids need a pee after travelling for hours, and an hour and a half after that, the game starts, which lasts for—an hour and a half!

Fuck me, no wonder crowds are down.

Fair enough, they have tried to jazz it up, but even the most fanatical supporter would argue that they are pushing it a bit by describing the windfall staff as wearing “the famous yellow jerseys ” .

Still, as long as the players and the shirts fetch the right price, who gives a fuck ?

We could do so much more.

We could offer , say, £50 to the supporter who spots the man who clearly isn’t a Celtic fan.

We could give away  new shirts to kids in a sort of raffle.

not everyone can afford to keep up with the many changes in merchandise, so occasionally giving a few away would help to get the kids interested. They are the future, mind.

Family finance plays a big part in planning trips to the games, and not everyone can go all the time.

Some people have urgent domestic troubles to deal with first. Like Clare, for instance;

The board don’t understand how tough it is for us who follow the team.

For those of you going to the game today, you’ll be hoping that Celtic crank it up a notch and give Ross County a damn good thrashing.

Those of you watching on livestreams or listening on the radio will be hoping the same.

Ronny Deila will be straining at the leash to let people know he hasn’t given up just yet, and will fight for the respect of fans, the respect of players and send a great big get it up ye to the world of Scottish football, which has done nothing but sneer at him since he got here, with all his fancy dan ideas about sports science, and his attempts to revolutionise the way Celtic play.

For an example of his thinking, have a read of what the clubs Scandinavian scout sees as his remit…

Scandinavian scout opens up

Worryingly, at first, he mentions “selling on ” players, but further in, thankfully, thats not the priority.

He’ll be hoping Bankier doesn’t read that.

On to todays game, and manager Deila has said that Patrick Roberts might not get as much game time as his Manchester City overlords might want…

This is 18 months and he needs time to adapt to how we train and play He also had some injuries before he arrived, so he still needs to get better fitness-wise.

“We’ve spoken with him a lot and he has skills, which means he can do something at this level.”

“He was up and down in the Under-20 game, but there were times he was at a fantastic level. He scored a very good goal and has touch and vision. We have to use this first half of the year to get him adapted, but I’m not saying he can’t be involved. Hopefully he can kick on as quickly as possible,”

He doesn’t want him, does he ?

Fair play to him if thats the case, and if he is standing up to Lawwell and his “here’s a player , can you sort him out for a mate ? ” policy, then we need to support him in this.

If we can make ronny feel like he has our support, maybe he will feel a little more confident, and maybe things will improve on the pitch.

Maybe we can get behind the players today as well. After all, you have to feel for them with bosses in the boardroom like they have.

Us against them ?

Thats the way its always been, hasn’t it ?

Now, whats the bold Nicola saying here ? Or maybe she’s listening ?

By the way, i spent ages chopping pointless and tedious insults and threats  again from yesterdays Diary. Last night and this morning.

That’s the last warning,

Next time, I’ll be chopping contributors.

Ralph,pure dead brilliant.
Anyway you look at it nearly 12mill. profit for 6months is a great result for business men, steering the club through difficult times and thats what they are Business men.
But CELTIC is more much more than a business, they are a club a football club that in many ways is everything to the support a way of life and the ever decreasing circle on players of quality will only go one way.Big, Big choices ahead for the board in the summer, lets hope they make the right ones.
The here and now is most important and title no5 must be acheived if we are to attain C.L.fitba next season.

I read that we had £7.1 or 7.7m in the bank, now why can’t Desmond and O’Brien put, let’s say £25m each of their own wealth into the clubs account? That would be £57m in the bank.
If we are due the co-op £14m why don’t these two just pay it off?

I think the mentality with loan players is now: “if we bought him today and develop him correctly, he’ll be gone in 18 months. So we may as well save the transfer fee”.

That’s a crap way of thinking, by the way.

Bigdunno

So Monti, you are saying that the club should go out and sign a player who has just pled guilty to two offences involving sexual activity with children and is currently on trial for two others. Is that before or after he gets the jail? There is something psychologically wrong with you if you think that’s the type of player (good or bad) that we should be going for. There is no place in society for people like that, let alone in our football club. You need to take a long hard look at yourself. Unless you are a Hun which might explain things.

I never felt the need to comment on ETims before as I had nothing to add to the general banter of supporters that made me laugh and think about our team until recently when the Buzzfeed Bampots decided that the comments sections needed their own brand of filth and fury. According to the Bampots, there is no such thing as a grand old team to support and you can stick your win, lose or draw up your jacksie. No, nowadays being a supporter is all about being “simply the best” as it is all; I’m the bestest Fenian and know more songs than you, I’m the bestest fan ’cause I go to more games than you, (so piss off all you exiles, disabled, poor, gainfully employed and junior doctors), I’m the bestest manager Celtic never had and i can prove it ’cause I’m the bestest at Wack-a-mole Pretendy Football, I’m the bestest fan ’cause I can insult more people than you, I’m the bestest bigot ’cause I can threaten more grievous harm than you. How about being the bestest at getting a grip. Or mibbe just gie it a rest. I will be supporting Celtic before, during and after the match regardless of the score, and if we lose I will be mightily pissed off but I will have no desire to come on here and threaten anybody.

As far as I remember DD wrote a cheque for 8m to ensure that Celtic FC did not go under and supported the Fergus rebuilding eventually becoming the biggest shareholder. So while Fergus was the face and some of the money DD was behind it with more money. Football clubs have to be operated within rules. Some operate with large debts knowing full well that the size of the club and the league they play in presents little chance of them ever going under. We are in a different world from that. We need to run a surplus to be able to do anything because it’s unlikely any bank in the world would lend us money in the SPFL. Also all the talk about if I was a billionaire … is silly we aren’t billionaires and I’m sure those who are have most of that wealth tied up in business assets rather than money. If my Aunty had a cock she’d be my uncle!

Monti spending other people’s money is so easy. Gratitude for saving our club is in order for both Fergus and DD. I’m always amazed by the ingratitude particularly for Fergus after he basically with DD used a large amount of their own money on a risky bet at the time. We can indulge in all the “if I were” speculation we want but we have no right ( we can have opinions ) about how DD or others spend their money, which they earned. Just like no one has the right to tell you what to do with your money or me with mine. want change band together and spend our money

Yoour in good hands in here, but just hope Labour don’t get in as you’ll be back here with the stress of increases in council tax, increases in income tax, plus welcoming weopons of mass destruction, amongst other things they have in store for the working classes!!

66 mins GMS has a very good chance instead of controlling with left and hitting it with his right foot he tries to play it first time to Johansen with his Left.

Freezing the proverbials watching this crap.
Can blame the players, down to the manager, absolutely terrible. Might be winning, but performance poor. First half terrible, anyway Griffs got thirty

Well done to Leigh Griffiths getting his 30th of the season today, at least he is performing how a Celtic striker should! HH

Good result today. Here are my thoughts on the team.
Lustig played well, was more aggressive than last two outings.
Boyata brave goal, some good defensive headers, passing still off sometimes.
Chenko another good performance. He needs a goal and we’ll see him score more.
Tierney amazing performance. While others pass horizontally, he is prepared to make forward passes and to take players on.
Brown still finding his way back, still effective.
Bitton slow, caught in possession, a luxury player at the moment.
GMS an enigma, incredible work rate and speed, plays cute flicks that are low percentage passes, an “almost” man.
Jo Hansen better today, effective.
Armstrong good crosser, but too easily brushed aside. Disappointing, I had high hopes for him.
Griffiths if he is stopped where will the goals come from? Emerging as more than a goal scorer.
JF time to move on, James. You need to be in a different team.
CKR. Will not be pushed off the ball, could emerge as a real bargain.
Rogic. Needs more game time. A couple of good passes to the wings.
Ronnie did not have any big decisions to make today. His subs looked fine. I agree with Ralph, he looks like a man that does not want to be here. Felt quite sorry for him.

Monti,

He is out of his depth, I agree. However, he is a human being. He is waiting for a pay off.

I have said he is out of his depth for about a year now, the clues that gave it away was his treatment of Kris Commons and how he shat it against Maribor.
I don’t feel sorry for him,Celtic come first!
If Celtic had BORAT in the dugout but was getting us into the CL,I would be happy!

No room for sentiment, you have to be ruthless!

Forgot to add. Why did we let Jackson Irvine leave? Very good utility player. Can play CH and midfield. Almost scored in the first half. If that had gone in, it would have been very interesting!

Rebus67,
Maybe it’s because we are overloaded with midfielders?
Who would Jackson Irvine replace in the Current Celtic midfield?

Rebus67

Monti,

I agree it was probably because of the glut in that area. I am not a Mulgrew fan…Irvine could replace him in the squad. To be clear, I am not pushing the point, merely curious on why he was let go. Was he a Willie Wallace find?

I respect your opinion, but I disagree, Nir Bitton is an extremely high quality player, he does need to speed his feet up though, can be ponderous!

Charlie Saiz

He will be sold for profit needs to cut out those pirouettes 20 yards out from goal putting too much pressure on the CB’s when he gets caught dallying.
Wanyama had a similar issue on arrival but quickly got shot of it after a few months.
Wish Nir would do the same.

I agree Monti but both those two looked solid in the development think Frasers injury put him back but Irvine did well on loan.
Can see a similar thing happening with Henderson and O’Connell at this rate.
