Celtic Diary Saturday January 16: Total Football The Celtic Way

Friday night isn’t when football should be played.

But the prospect of a weekend off seemed to fire Celtic last night as they swept to a 4-1 win over Dunde United.

And it wasn’t a bad performance either.

With Nir Biton joining Scott Brown on the sideline, the midfield looked a little lightweight, but happily the Arabs let Celtic have the ball back every time they lost it, so it didn’t really matter, except for when they ran down the middle of the park and scored, but they hadn’t done that before, didn’t do it again, so you can’t really blame Celtic for conceding.

Before that, Leigh Griffiths pounced on a defensive slip to “smash the ball between the keepers legs “-his words-to claim his fitieth goal in sixty starts.

An astonishing return for a player many didn’t think had it in him, and manager Ronny Deila, acknowledging the fact that Griffiths has done his fifty quicker than any other modern era striker, used that word “legend “…

“It is a very good performance to get to 50 so early.

“I am delighted with the way he plays. He has a five-year deal here, so there is a good chance, if he keeps scoring like this, that he can be a legend. When you say those names and say he has scored more goals than them in the same period then he has a big opportunity to really make a mark in Celtic’s history.”

Griffiths seemed happy about it when he scored the landmark goal, but played down the managers praise;

“To score 50 goals at such a big club is special To get mentioned in the same breath as these guys, Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton and John Hartson, I am a long way off that. These are icons of this club. If I can be half as good as these guys I will be happy. But I need to keep working hard on the training field and try to keep moving forward.”

but referee Bobby Madden wasn’t as pleased, as he had Kris Commons down for first goalscorer, and so the Griff paid the price …

Of course, excessive celebration was the real reason for the booking, and Kris Commons and Stefan Johansen were careful not to even smile.

Griffiths, though, reckons it was worth it;

“Was the T-shirt worth the booking? One million per cent. There was an added incentive to get that goal and I knew when the chance came my way that as long as I put it on target I’d score. I texted
Stevie the kitman this morning to get a T-shirt made up for me. Broony was giving me a bit of stick saying I should have had one saying ‘51’ as well.”

That would have been interesting. Even Bobby Tait or Tiny Wharton drew the line at sending players off for scoring twice.

You can tell Madden doesn’t like Griffiths, as this clip shows, and frankly, if the exchange had been the other way round…

Booby has a message for Leigh

Jozo Simunovic followed the opener with a powerful header to make it 2-0, and credit has to go to Kris Commons for the slightly outswinging free kick which left the keeper in no mans land, allowing the big defender to get a good run at the ball.

United pulled their goal back before the break, which would have given them a little encouragement to at least come back out for the second half, but Griffiths again and then a spectacualar effort from an in flight Commons rounded of the scoring.

Playing one up front has its failures, but if we’d had two strikers scoring twenty five each in sixty games, we’d be over the moon. Griffiths did it himself, and maybe putting someone alongside him would just mean less room for him to exploit.

His mobility and finishing are his strong points, let him get on with it.

Pre match, manager Deila pointed out that he wasn’t playing one up front, he was playing three, maybe four, and as the game progressed, that seemed to be the case. Everyone middle to front looked lively, and capable of scoring, and the movement and passing showed further improvement.

At the back Efe Ambrose, having been roasted by the manager, is showing that he is the clubs best defender. He was immense last night, and will get better as his confidence and concentration continue to improve. Even Mikael Lustig is starting to look like his old self, so it must be nearly time for his injury, but on the whole, I’m quite looking forward to my trip up next week, for the St. Johnstone game.

The margin would have been greater had the League appointed a couple of linesmen who actually understood the offside rule, as they combined to get absolutely everything wrong.

but we should have seen that coming…

The ugly issue of pyrotechnics raised its head again , and no doubt we will see the same voracious campaign to eradicate it, penalise the club and have the fans shot as we did last week..

Mind you, if we are to penalise ugly issues that raise their head at football matches….

He’s a brave man sitting in the crowd after what he’s done to Scottish football, or not done, depending on how you see it. Especially in Dundee, where its a bit rough.

I remember once, on my way down to the ground,  being accosted by a bird sitting on a wall with the customary cigarette hanging out of her mouth

Its rough round there.

And its going to be a rough weekend.

No football worth taking any notice of, although Anthony Stokes making his debut for Hibs might be worth a look when they play Falkirk, Bt sports showing that there are other sides worth covering in the second tier.

I’ll be spending the weekend probably shopping with the wife.

Which reminds me …

Why did my wife cross the road ?

To go back into the first fucking shop we went into three and a half hours ago.

Sory about the language. she hates it when I use words which are mean or offensive. She’s got a point. I should try a little harder to remember her name.

I won’t be here all week, I’m appearing at a working mens club some time in the seventies.

The man , dressed rather eccentrically in yesterdays picture was the original Ronald MacDonald, the character used to persuade children they aren’t eating enough sugar and preservatives.

Heres a photo of a player who , bearing in mind his surname, was never going to be a big favourite with some sections of the support.

Who is he ?

Gerry Brittain ( spelling?)
Formed a lethal partnership with Dugald McCarrison in the early 90’s,in the deserve side.
Some good goals last night and it’s important to keep winning when not at full strength.
Eve Ambrose, wouldn’t get too excited about him, it has to be remembered he was playing against the worst side in the league, however he did play well so credit where it’s due.
I still would accept any reasonable offer for him in this window, sorry Efe, the damage has been done.

Commons goal was outstanding but my gut feeling is this should be his last season with us, there are younger players in his position who need to be starting games.
Wonderful servant for the club tho.

Gerry Britton. I always thought he was one of our “nearly” men. Last night looked lots better. Is Johansen getting back to the form of last year? He is at his best at nicking the ball off opponents. I’ve always believed Efe is (on form) our best defender but Simunovic is looking better and better and that was a classic bullet header. Allan made a few great passes in just a few minutes on the pitch. Lustig returning to form? How bad was Tierney’s shoulder injury?I am beginning to think we have nearly all the pieces to our team jigsaw but just have to get them in the right place? Armstrong looked strong, but should be central. Forrest should always be on the right. Wee Griffiths? Superb. The ’50’ booking was harsh and nearly all the offsides given against us—weren’t. The ball did hit wee Forrest’s arm though but the Arabs weren’t going to score—a penalty would have been harsh as well. A good day at the office. I hope for more of the same now. We still are nervous at the back but well done bhoys.

Happy with last night tho have to mention johansen. Again match reports with johansen not at his best. The guy is trying but not doing it. You seen it in rogic face , best player on the park yet subbed while stefan continues his losing the ball headless chicken act. I cant see any reason why were continuing to play games with ten and a half men other than the fact he is the managers pal and norwegian. We cant sit for ever and wait on his form coming back. It is doing a player who could play well out of a game.

He gave the ball away on numerous occasions when there were simple passes to be made.

He also takes far to many touches when quick play could have tore the Arabs apart. He should have already played the ball when he was pulled back there was a goal to be had there.

I was disappointed with him and felt that maybe Armstrong would have been better placed there push Rogic out to the left hand side and have commons in behind the striker with with either Alan or Forrest playing on the Right.

Things are starting to look good again, the team is fresh and full of energy which is why we are starting to play football again. I still think our problems and poor performances over the last 5 months was down to fatigue from the season before, 2 weeks rest was never enough time off. Onwards and upwards we go.

Johnnyhorizontal

I thought johansen got of to a no bad start but fell away to feck
I think commons was about do be subbed until he scored that cracking goal…then Ronny and Johnny thought feck it might as well leave him on, don’t want a repeat of another televised sideline ding dong of exchanging views.
Can’t understand why rogic was then subbed? Mcgregor or johansen should have went before rogic.
How many players on the subs bench got the tracky off ready to come on, then for deila to change his mind?

Good performance last night but as someone already commented Utd aren’t up to much,Johansen and mc Gregor look like the weak links and should have definitely been taken off,efe ambrose was immense last night but I think simunovic needs somebody of real quality alongside as some of his positional sense was suspect.

Ronnie back in… ! One of my favourite scenes in the genius that is the football part of ‘Kes’ shows Billy Casper retrieving the ball after someone has scored (no nets). He hands it back to the P.E. teacher (the superb Brian Glover) who throws the big heavy, wet team ball back at him knocking him off his feet.
Casper, ‘What’s that for Sir’ ?
Glover, ‘Slack work Casper, slack work’
I wish Ronnie would do that with all the first team last night.
A good win but exasperating in slack play often under no pressure

Sorry to see Stokes go even on loan but too much baggage surrounding him lately. Effe , maybe the penny has dropped with him has played really well in last 3 games and has tidied up his game , maybe he does have a future at Celtic. Johansen , what can you say about this guy there were aspects of his game last night to admire but his passing was poor at times . Rogic should not have been taken off he was the most dangerous mid fielder on the park but for some reason he keeps getting subbed around 60/70 mins , maybe there is a fitness issue but he looked good to me last night disappointed for him last night. Forrest I know this won’t be popular but Jamsie contributed nothing when he came on and it should have been a pen . In a tighter game that could have been a disaster. Scott Allan , natural replacement for KC looks a good player and can’t wait to see him play 90mins . regularly. I hope Celtic go back in for Dutd 19 year old midfielder ,great run and pass for their goal but generally played well strong in the tackle and skilful. Good game good result for Celtic .☘☘☘

Overall last night’s game was a good advert for the SPFL, Souttar’s piercing run and pass would have been raved about on Sky Sports News if John Doe of Overpaid United would have scored it live on Super Someday!! Some of the tracking back and skill from Rogic was brilliant to watch, I’m currently +4 GMT so staying up past midnight with work in the morning, it was worth the late night.

Early days to get carried away but there seems to be something in the players which changes after New Year, there was a sense of urgency and Stefan pressed the ball as good as I’ve seen him do all season.

Efe was Effin’ excellent and I was pleased with that performance, you couldn’t take anything away from the young carrot-topped striker for United who took his goal well.

Friday night football? I love it!! As unatural as it feels.

I think Madden said “Never mind fuck off” after Griffiths told the linesman to “fuck off” after being flagged for being onside for the umpteenth time. I thought one linesman just had a nervous tick or thought he was at the Nuremburg Rally.

Overall I thought the performance was patchy ,great in some respects but poor in others.
My main concern before a ball was kicked was the absence of Bitton in the DM role as I believe without both him and Brown in there we would be exposed as neither Johansen or McGregor are that comfortable in this role but needs must as they say and it bit us on the arse for their goal as I doubt very much Brown and Bitton would have been caught out wrong side like that so easily myself.
Lustig was awful for me for the bulk of the game in defence not until the last 20 when he had a couple of great clearances did I think he looked comfortable?
Comes inside far too much for my liking and is getting done too easily on the wing.
I think onny is just looking after Rogic as he is Forrest both have a poor injury record but seem to be past it now and I think it’s down to the Managers “management” of the situation as the game was done as a contest and it was slippy under foot (plenty losing their footing last night) I think he pulled Rogic in case he pulled something else.
Lastly the great 1 up 2 up debate has finally been settled.
Leigh Griffiths has just broke the Club record for reaching 50 goals in the shortest span of games he’s done that playing the bulk of these games as a lone frontman in this Formation.
To add to that only one season we have scored more goals in 21 games in the past 10 Season that was Season 2005-06 when we had Zuawski Hartson and Maloney to choose from.

Monti
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

The one up, two up debate is only settled in your mind!
The VAST majority of Celtic supporters would prefer to see TWO strikers up front, that is what Celtic has always done, two up front.

Griffiths is doing a magnificent job for Celtic but we are still overly dependant on him.
Can you imagine Cole up front on his own or Ciftci on his own? Would fail massively.
If ( God forbid ) we lost Griffiths to injury, you would quickly find out one up front doesn’t work.

We are Getting away with it to a degree!

We can’t get too excited about beating Dundee Utd although they are improving a bit, actually just like Effe! I have said before Johansin is doing better but not back to last season, he is not a holding midfielder his goals from last season came from a more forward position.
Ian
Not sure Rigic or Commins for different reasons can do 90 minutes, maybe they could job share although the shape would need to change, Rogic’s dribbling is sublime and Cimmons technical ability when striking a ball is top class. I wonder if Griffiths could claim Portuguese or Danish or Peruvuan nationality and get the recognition he deserves. I worry if they will protect Tierney enough given his age. His tackling is simply unbelievable, how many times going back does he get the ball not the man, rarely gives away a free kick. It’s looking better, I wish I could forget Molde, the Kille or Mothetwell result will come up over a season but on top of each other and so soon after the European shambles was too much. If and I mean if they have put the nonsense behind them forgiveness maybe possible for some of us.

Never been a fan of Madden since I saw him refereeing Junior games but I’d rather see the ref telling a player to “fuck off” if the player had just used the same expression than booking him – unless the player had been overly aggressive. Just think, if Madden had booked Griffiths at that point, he would then have had to send him off for the goal celebration and that would have caused a right rammy.

Great goal terrific finish.. but I thought Rogic was far more effective in the central role.
Commons pace cost Griffiths a hat-trick last night he is too slow now nothing wrong with his technique when striking a ball that was never in question.

Totally agree on Lustig being Captain he does nothing to warrant it in my opinion.
Give it Gordon when Browns injured he at least will shout at them when needed.

McGregor done nothing wrong last night, he is a very clever and under estimated player. A few worse than him especially Johanson who needs dropped big time. But we played a lot better than its been but playing a poor side. Simunovich looks like a player as well.

Agreed – I’m surprised at the amount of people saying that McGregor was poor. I thought he was tidy in posession – when he plays deeper in midfield he shows an old head on young shoulders. Compare to Johannson, who was better than he’s been recently, but still gave the ball away a lot and should have been roasted for not releasing the balll quicker when we had that break – it was criminal.

Joe,
I agree about McGregor, he has the Ability and a bit of craft about him.
When he got a wee run in the team last year I thought he just drifted out of things.
Definitely something about him that I like tho. HH

Eric Sviachenko, Danish of Ukrainian background. Age 24, 6’2 Central Defender. Internationalist. Good reports about him. Danes have served us pretty well in the past. Another Mark Rieper? Should sign for us this weekend.

Does he Have a blunders video?

I hope our scouting system go a little further than these edited videos.

You could make Efe look like a superstar or a complete diddy using the same technique.

Every defender could have a blunders video the fact is he is capable of all the things you see some aren’t no matter how many videos you make about them.

My point was that these are edited videos. I also noticed he seemed to play as left handed CB.

Do you think he would walk into the team?

And would Jozo shift to the Right to accommodate?

HH

I think it means we could deploy a 3-5-2 now when he settles with Jozo playing the Central role.
He looks like a defender comfortable in posession and able to play it out from the back.
All good.

Letting Stokes go to Hibs is just plain crazy. We do not have a huge choice of striker options presently. He will be a huge success at Hibs. Only moving because Deila possesses no people skills along with all his other many well documented shortcomings.

Last night and today is the proof that the media have an agenda against us. Dundee United fans let flair’s off before the game and yet not a mention. I had a wee look at the papers this morning and guess what not a thing printed and nothing mentioned in the news, whereas with Celtic it’s headline news and a massive scandal…..brutal

Thanks , the Dubliners one of my sisters was a bridesmaid in the big car stopped at the lights in the centre of Belfadt and one of the Dubliners, half cut, from the night before jumped into the car and scared the life out of her. Glad Marc Reiper got a mention here ally made a difference. I do want Boyata to make the grade he is quick and scored vital goals but also defended poorly, competition for places has got to be good. Tend to agree that
MacGrwgor not Rogic should have come off last night although I like him when is more effective.

Seems to be alot of criticism about Ronny’s deployment of certain players but particularly the Midfield department?
The fact we have Brown out and Bitton out has caused the Manager a bit of a headache in the DM department he has chosen to deploy primarily Johansen in there (he arrived at Celtic a player who had played in this role under Deila previously)which I think was the right option and subsequently McGregor and I think this is down to his workrate?
Armstrong has been deployed out on the left since he arrived last season this was not an issue for most as he hit the ground running out there an made an immediate inmpact.
His form has been average so far as a result this has led to criticism of Deila for playing him there?
Last night itmay have escaped the notice of some that Armstrong could have scored at least 2 and set up Commons supeb strike from that same position.
Commons playing on the right with Rogic in the 10 found himself in some grest positions last night,Rogic on the other hand was standout in the central role.
Deila had his selection right I felt the only issue was the individual errors by Johansen and McGregor which in last nights case was more to do with the conditions than anything else I thought.
I prefer both Johansen and McGregor in the Attacking aea of midfield and have no doubts that both may well slot back in there when both Brown and Bitton return to their usual positions.
Fact is we have strength in depth in the 3 behind the frontman and Commons offers the same threat in any of them regardless.

Charlie Saiz

They say you are only as good as your last game (who are they?) if this is indeed a fact then Efe Ambrose has proven in his last 3 games to be a very decent defender.
I still think he should be kept on unless we can replace himw ith better?
I would also like to see him played as a DM alongside Brown for 3 or 4 games just too see if he can (I suspect he can)do a good job in the DM role?
He has pace,he has strength and can pass a ball fairly well.
Not to mention he rarely get done in the air.

Charlie Saiz,

I am praying they don’t try him in DM. I don’t think he has the mind for it. considering many of his blunders have been caused by him taking chances (like a midfielder further up the park) when he should have cleared it.
Hate to confuse him again by playing him in DM.

Is there anybody who watched that debut from Efe and thought he wasn’t capable of playing the DM role?
That’s as an assured game in that role than Bittons had his entire time at Celtic.
Efe has the tools to do the job you can quite clearly see that he has.
Btw his passing in that game is as good as anything I have seen in midfield over the past 2 years.

Uralius

Again I would hate to confuse him. He said himself that he made errors by trying to play like a Midfielder (his words not mine). If he is going to play CD then let’s just leave him there.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Uralius there is a world of difference between trying to play like a Midfielder in Defence than there is playing like one in Midfield.
Can you not see this?

Uralius
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Of course I can, but it seems we can’t play him both. He has come out and said he has sorted his defensive head out. Therefore he should keep being a CD. If he starts playing in midfield again all that hard work would be gone. It is one or the other, he has done well at the back as long as he continues to do so leave him there. If we move him to Midfield he cannot move back. There is a tiny chance of playing him as a half back in a defensive formation, but I don’t know if I would even risk that.

New guy appears to be a good signing, good age and some decent experience for a relative youngster. Time will tell of course. I hope we avoid loan signings unless we have guarantees that we can sign permanently in the summer. Would dearly love a top striker to back up / partner the griff. The squad is getting more experienced in various positions with some promising young talent coming through. I think broony will benefit from his absence and if we can strengthen properly up front then I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. HH

Summary: Goals: Gordon/Bailly/Fasan
Right Back: Lustig/Janko/Fisher/Ambrose
Centre Backs: Boyata/Simunovic/Ambrose/O’Carrol/Mulgrew/Blackett/Lustig/Sviachenko
Left Back: Tierney/Izzy/Janko/Blackett/Mulgrew
Holding Midfield: Bitton/Brown/Ambrose/Johansen
Attacking Midfield:Forrest/Commons/Mackay-Steven/Armstrong/Johansen/Rogic/Allan/Christie/Liam Henderson/Calum McGregor
Strikers: Griffiths/Cole/Ciftci
At the moment we need a good proven striker and at right bank we need to get Janko fit and get Fisher back. It’s looking better for competition for places. We also need to consider our players out on loan. Is Scepovic good enough for us or not? Our squad is pretty full and this might be a big advantage for cups and down the home stretch. I’m more optimistic about Europe too but we need to tighten up our defence. I think we can score in Europe but we can’t leak goals. I’m hoping we get a really good and settled back four. If matches are won in midfield then we are pretty settled there for the next number of years. We also need to hang on to Bitton, Rogic, etch. However, if we did sell off some midfield for big bucks then I think we could cope better than we did with selling Van Dijk/Denayer. We can’t make that mistake again.

Devoy45

Sorry, I know we didn’t ‘sell’ Denayer as he was on loan but we can’t afford to give up any defenders at the same time again. I now think we could field two pretty decent sides if we had to give some bhoys a rest. I want to see Allan, Christie, Liam Henderson get lots of playing time and I would like to look at some of the young lads like Nesbitt and others.

Charlie Saiz

I think once the League is in the bag we should be resting the key men and giving the fringe guys the run in games to prove their worth.
If they can’t cut it in the SPL then they will be of no use in Europe and should be moved on pronto.
