Celtic Diary Thursday January 14: Loan Market Bouyant This Time Of Year

Talks have apparently begun with Manchester City over a short term loan deal for Bersant Celina, another one of those Norwegian wonderkids we keep hearing about. The player wants to play football, and that isn’t going to happen at City. However, its quite worrying that the deal isn’t going to finish up with the player as a permanent fixture at Celtic Park, so one wonders if there is a point to it. Don’t the club know Steven Fletcher is available on a free ? Oh , hang on, I’ve just answered my own question. The problem with loans is the player has to go back, as with Jason Denaayer, as if they are succesful, they end up out of our price range. Okay, it may lead to other signings, such as was the case with Dedryck Boyata, oh, hang on, theres no point in finishing this sentence.   Deila is on record as saying that he wants to bring in experience this month, as the trialists already here are still needing to take ID with them when they go out for cigarettes.

“Of course, we’re not looking at someone who is on the Ballon D’or list, It’s not going to be them.

“It is players who have been important in their teams – that’s what’s important for me.

“He [Ajer] is not a player who would immediately be a big part of the Celtic first team. It can be also that he stays in Norway for half the season, also to finish school.

“We have to see the whole package. He would be a project. He is a ‘98 kid, so he’s very young.

“We want players who have played games before and who can come in and do something now.

“That is the important thing.

“We have a lot of talent and we need someone who can lift the whole squad.”

Peter Lawwell was standing nearby, and he only heard the words “Ballon d’Or list “

A marquee signing ?

The club’s retail sector is concerned that shirt sales indicate that there is no big name at Celtic, they can tell by what names go on the back of shirts ,as the last real big seller was Kris Commons, and it is a sign that the support is becoming apathetic.

Other signs, which you would think they would have spotted, include large numbers of empty seats during matches and the comments on social media these days.

Looking at the possibilities perhaps indicate that the clubs idea of a marquee signing is perhaps a little different from the supporters.

We’ve mentioned Steven Fletcher, and earlier in the window we mentioned Georgios Samaras, who is on the list, but a little further down than expected, and lets be honest, thats not going to have the crowds flocking to buy the temporary tops supplied by New Balance.

And anyway, there’ll be three new ones next season.

So maybe the marquee signing will be in the summer, which doesn’t make sense. If that is the case, then we’ll be playing qualifiers while he’s still trying to talk his missus into living in Glasgow, which isn’t so bad and is nothing like it is portrayed in the Taggart episodes.

The police are far more miserable than that, and carry guns now as well.

Any major signing would have to be now, and as we know its difficult to get anyone of a decent calibre to move in January, unless they are miserable where they are.

And lets face it, the weather being what it is just now would make most hide at the back of the plane until it took off again.

In an ideal world, we’d be getting in a player or two to put bums on seats and create a buzz for the run in, but we don’t live in an ideal world, and thats not entirely the clubs fault.

The Steven Fletcher story is moving quickly, unlike the player, and he may be the answer.

Sunderland aren’t a great side, and most players would struggle there.

Ask Adam Matthews.

So maybe he would do well alongside Leigh Griffiths. It would be worth a shot, but not at the expense of Griffiths, who is, and must remain, first choice.

Which leaves the Norwegian out in the cold, as there is no way a loannee needing games should displace our number one striker.

Scott Brown may be ready to return to the side a  bit sooner than expected. He’s been running around at Lennoxtown, and that has delighted Ronny Deila;

“It is unbelievably positive for us. I think we have done well without Scott but everyone knows how important as a player and as a person he is to the club and the group. “He is smiling and we are smiling when he is out running. He is like an 18-year-old boy when he runs and hopefully he can progress a little bit quicker than we hoped. Things seem positive but there is still a little bit to go. “We were looking at the middle of February but we will see how he progresses. “Scott is a really important person in the group and in the club. “He’s here every day in training and he is at every game as well. “Scott has a positive effect on everyone, but his biggest influence is on the pitch and we look forward to getting him back.  “His body heals very quickly and hopefully that will be the case this time.” At Lennoxtown theres a wee room, and whatever it is that helps Brown’s body to heal so quickly is the subject of a wee experiment, involving Derk Boerrrigter; The Scott Allan saga of the last window may be out to repeat itself as Celtic “monitor” developments on Michael O’Halloran , the pacy St. Johnstone forward. As with Allan, Second Rangers have opened the bidding at ridculously low amounts. apparently offering thus far £110,000 and £145, 000. For a city trader, he really has no idea about the football market. Probably explains why he’s not a city trader any more , come to think of it. Of course, it could simply be that the Ibrox club is a bit short , like anyone ekse this time of year, and hoping that , well, the lord only knows what they are hoping, but it certainly isn’t anything realistic. Celtic may make a bid, purely to strengthen our own squad, and not to annoy the first division leaders at all. The paltry offers made by the new club show that they still think they only have to click their fingers and players will jump at the chance of playing for the worlds most successful club, but they don’t, because they aren’t. This might change when Dave King opens his warchest, believed to contain around £30m in unmarked bills, but lets be honest, it’s unlikely.   Anthony Stokes now has a third club to choose from, as an agreement to take him on loan has been arranged with Dundee United. The player will choose where he wants to go.   One player who , well, up until yesterday, is going nowhere , is Stefan Johansen. The midfielder, one of our better players agreed to a Q and A on Twitter, which probably wasn’t the cleverest thing he’s ever done. However, supporters proved , when a player is maybe short on confidence, their experience of playing FIFA whatever on the computer, serves them well when dealing with the issue; They may think its clever, or witty, but frankly, its pathetic and any player would think twice about joining, or indeed staying at, Celtic given this kind of abuse.

When was the last time u bothered your arse during a game? The year will do if you’re struggling to remember a date @CelticView

@divisbhoy @yahmpy @CelticView are you really ronnies lovechild?

@CelticView would you agree that yer a waste of space??

How do you manage to get a game week in week out?

Theres a lot more in the same vein, and its not helpful.

Would you try harder at work if you had to put up with this nonsense ?

And 50,000 people whinging at you every week ?

More memories, if you like , today, about the Celts in this picture..

I know Johansen has been quite poor this season, but those tweets are disgraceful,no player goes on to the pitch to have a stinker,[I hope],Its the manager who picks the team and if it was me he would be taken out of the team until he regains form, and we have enough midfielders to fill the gap i.e Scott allan.

Dalglish and McGrain were my main Idols as a kid.
Particularly Kenny as I played up front I based my game on his.
McGrain is a total legend considering he like Kenny started of life as a Rangers fan he has given so much of his life to Celtic.
How much for all 3 in todays Market eh?

I said that to a bunch of lads when I was home in October, and that not one outfield player would have been an automatic pick in any side since.

I was ridiculed for that, till I bought the next round. They’re coming round to my POV now though.

It can’t be easy writing a blog during the transfer window, you’ve either got made up pish from the smsm or rumors on twitter to go on or you have to be able to see into the future. When and ‘IF’ The Mighty Glasgow Celtic signs a player, you’ll know when that happens. No matter who, how and when they sign, loan or not, they should get the full backing of the support until, they show they’re not worthy of pulling on the famous ‘Hooped Jersey’. HH

Not having that about big Tom Forsyth. he came to a “break the bottle” charity night when Dixie Deans ran the Vulture’s Perch in Hamilton in the early 80’s. Tommy Burns and Charlie Nicholas were also there. The big guy took pelters from the clientele but took it all in good humour and gave a wee bit back as well. Seemed a decent bloke and gave a ot more to the Celtic fans that night than oor Charlie, if memory serves me well.

I’m not saying I’m bashing on the door to the board asking questions but I’m not claiming to be! If you’ve got problems with how we’re going why don’t you actually do something about to gauge the support’s willingness to get behind some public action? Make a petition, organise a rally, do something! Don’t sit behind your desk and act like a warrior supporter if you’re not going to back it up. The MSM keep telling us that without the Huns, nothing in our league is competitive and that winning anything (without THEM) is no big deal. Yet many Celtic supporters have bought into that argument. Maybe some of our bhoys on the pitch are just listening to what’s being said about them and the league they play in? Hard to win trophies that are being shit on before you can even win them. Yet, nobody in the MSM says that trophies and titles are tainted when the old in-debt Rangers had no financial competition either—for nine years in a row! I refuse to let the MSM tell me what to think about our manager or our team. The MSM and Sevco want Deila out because they know he could stay long enough to see out ten in a row. No other Celtic manager since Jock Stein has wanted to actually stay at the club more than five years (MON) and it’s usually 3 years. It took Big Jock a few years at least to get the team he wanted playing the football he wanted and he is the last Celtic manager who stayed long enough do something big with only Scottish footballers at his disposal. It would be a shame to abort this experiment. I will only agree with the anti-Ronnys if it looks like we can’t win the title. Then and only then would I admit defeat. I want 10 in a row—for lots of reasons and that’s what the MSM fears most. Come domestic success then confidence builds and carries over into Europe. Simples. It has been a very long time since any Celtic side has had so many promising Scottish youngsters. They need time, so does our manager. Haud yer horses!
I respect everyone (we are all Celtic supporters) who doesn’t believe my take on this but there is chance I ( and others) may just be right!!! Let the abuse begin…

Devoy,
Why is the MSM constantly being referred to as some sort of fucking ‘ Oracle ‘?
I don’t give two fucks about any ‘ churnalists ‘ in Scotland.
Most Celtic fans I presume would be the same.
The biggest problem at Celtic park is the board, then it is the Fugazi.

Results in Europe and now domestically are fucking shambolic, don’t give me this we are top of the league shite, if Aberdeen hadn’t dtopped points in recent games we would be behind them.
We are struggling to beat SPFL sides and we have Molde strutting about Paradise like fucking Juventus!

I would genuinely love you to be proven correct. Nothing would please me more. I can only base judgement on what I’ve seen and so far apart from a 2-3 month spell 12 months ago we’ve been average to poor and are regressing.

If the board back Ronny to take us into the CL qualifiers (hopefully!) then so be it but for me the risk is far too great based on his European record to date.

If he does qualify I’ll be the first person on here saying I got it completely wrong and offering him my congratulations and a profound apology.

Afraid not. Stein won the European Cup two years after taking over and playing an exceptional style of football. Certainly didn’t take “a few years at least” to have his side playing how he wanted. Afraid your logic’s wrong too.

If it’s about domestic success breeding confidence, how come the huns, with all their financial chicanery in their failed attempt at 10-in-a-row never won the trophy that they so coveted?

I would like to dispel this myth that because we have a much bigger budget than anyone in Scotland it means we are buying top quality players with our money.
The simple fact of the matter is we don’t.
We buy above average players in the SPL that are below average in Europe where the quality levels take a massive jump.
We pay more for less at Celtic for the players we buy and the reason for this is due to where we ply our trade and the fact we have the richest League in World Football on our doorstep.
Players who are premier League level are snapped up on top money by comparison to us.
We pay less than some Championship sides pay hence the reason we have to pay more than perhaps we should or would otherwise if the English League was in a similar boat.
When we bought Armstrong Ciftci and Mackay Steven these were not top end players if they were I guarantee they would not be at Celtic.
They are Championship level in England ie mediocre in Europe.
All of the sides we faced in Europe bar the finsh mob would destroy the SPL Malmo Molde Ajax and Fenrbahce are a cut way above what we face week in week out so can we dispense with this money correlation to results?
It’s is a factor but not a defining one as it is relevant to each Clubs individual set of Circumstances.

Admin
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

It’s how he spends the budget that’s the problem.

£1.5m on Ciftci. £1m on Boyata. £2-3m on Scepovic.

Far more than those who have pumped us have spent. Factor in the good players he inherited and the overall wage bill and it’s not good enough.

Bgbhoy
Reply to  Hector Bandido

Well said sir. He buys scepovic who I maintain is a player. Plays him from the bench. He scores goals then Ronny sacks him off

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  Bgbhoy

Scepovic was already on Celtics radar before Ronny was signed we had already made enquiries before Ronny arrived.
The fact we paid paid over the odds for him is not down to Deila that is down to who scouted him and who decided he was worth the asking price.
That would be the same fucking idiots that signed Balde Bangura and Pukki blowing yet more millions on unproven gash.
In the big scheme of things ie Europe where complaints have been more critical £1.5m buys you sub standard mediocrity.
Boyata Janko Ciftci Armstrong Mackay-Steven Chistie Allan are not European level players they are above average SPL level WHO MIGHT BECOME European standard players.
None of them wee on the Premiership radar and there is good reason for that.
We buy them because we see POTENTIAL in them and possibly even profit if we can turn them into top League standard players.
We pay a premium in wages because that’s what it takes to get them before a Burnley or Derby tip up and take them for what they regard as peanuts in England.
All this has a cumulatve effect on our budget.
We have a large squad who are better paid what we don’t have is a large squad brimming with top talent.

The Big Tax Case comes up for appeal on 24th February at the Supreme Court . This is the last hurdle for a lot of the issues arising from The ”Tax Evasion ”. I believe Celtic are waiting on this outcome before giving their views on various aspects of The Cheating Hun . An interesting few weeks ahead hopefully.☘☘☘

The BBC are going to televise the cup game v the minnows. This would be s good opportunity to let the SFA know what the fans think of their input to all things Sevco by boycotting this game. Celtic can make a charitable donation to the little club so they do not lose out but this is a chsnce to get the ball rlolling on change at the SFA.☘☘☘

Are you taking copious amounts of LSD?
This will be a dream game for the non league side that makes it through to face us.

Maybe think of the wee team for a minute ……..

I don’t tend to watch much French Football (unless PSG are playing I am a fan of Marco Verratti)but last night I was watching the Toulouse game on BT and an attacking player caught my eye.
He’s a guy I have not heard much about but on further research appears to be half decent.
His name is Martin Braithwaite he is primarily a stiker but can also play as a winger.
He’s a Danish International and was purchased in 2013 for €2 million.
I gather we showed some interest in him around this time along with a few other Clubs?
Anyway he scored a lovely solo effrot last night and had a great game that got me to looking at a few vids etc..

Some cracking comments especially trying to compare Ronnie to big Jock. Football is a different sport and we live in a very different world than 50 years ago.

Wake up.

Bg boy do you go to see Celtic regularly? Did you start supporting Celtic in the 90s when football was trendy? You don’t have a clue. Do you not realise we are a big club in a small country in a big world?

Supporters are meant to support – the clues in the name.

Bitching clueless delusional criticism providers – who are you writing your comments for exactly?

My best posts go into the ether. There’s some wonderful stuff floating out there! Big Jock played for Celtic and knew what we needed. 1965 and onwards came on the back of his long experience on Celtic teams that struggled. He learned from that struggle. He was almost like a playing manager, seeing everything, taking mental notes, studying. Ronny is foreign and new to Celtic so needs more time than Big Jock needed. I’m not comparing the two at all. Who could ever compare to Big Jock but I am saying that Jock’s dream took at least a full decade to realise, from his own playing time to 1967. Who knows where the old Huns would be if they had given Le Guen more time when he told them to stop eating Monster Munch? To the anti-Ronny brigade: your dreams will come true, one: if Ronny doesn’t win the league. But if he does, two:if he doesn’t get in the CL at third attempt. Then you will get your wish and then…? Meanwhile, try some encouragement, it works better. If you have children or grandchildren you should already know this. We have a young team and a new manager. Get off their backs and help us win the title and take it from there.

Devoy,
You also have to accept that a large number of the support are NOT happy at this time, this is based on what we are seeing from this manager.
You want us all to go against our own views and happy clap Deila?

Time to man up…..

Bg Bhoy you are right pal.

I’m a mug half the time (more like 90%) as you see by last nights hasty comment.

I had no right to criticise you. Your view is as valid as mine and we are the CELTIC FAMILY.

Appreciate your offer tonight but only got it late.

Nite Bg bhoy and all bhoys and Ghirls.
