Celtic Diary Tuesday January 12: Celts Draw Wrong New Club

Looking at the news today, I was a little surprised to see that Jerry Hall, the texan former model, was engaged to media mogul rupert murdoch. I thought it was Mick Jagger who had Sympathy for the Devil.

Ach, she’ll be happy now she’s with a younger looking man.

And we should all be happy.

Now and again we get to talk about happy things.

Can you imagine the grief the guy who did the Scottish cup draw got when he picked the wrong Lothian team for Celtic to visit in the next round of the Cup ? He’ll be the laughing stock of the lodge.

Celtic will face either East Kilbride -there was no way Sevco would be made to go anywhere near the tax people-or Lothian Thistle in the Cup,

Thats what the Cup is all about. The non league side which prevails will have a pay day, possibly even television money, and a good time will be had by all.

And Ronny Deila gets to have a sleepless night before the game imagining all the headlines should it go wrong.

But someone is happy about it. well, if Lothian Thistle prevail , that is

Leigh Griffiths is from that neck of the woods.

“I wouldn’t mind going back to Saughton Enclosure and get in those wee tiny changing rooms. It would be an eye opener for some of our boys. I don’t think Tyler Blackett would be particularly happy swapping Old Trafford for Saughton Enclosure.

“It was my field of dreams, definitely, when I was a kid. That’s where you played most of the cup finals and, for Hutchie Vale, it was basically a home game for us.

“I’ve won a few games there in my time. I don’t think I’ve lost, actually – and I don’t want to start now.

“My scoring record there is not bad. I was pretty much a goal machine when I was younger, scoring five, six, seven a game.

“I wouldn’t say I’m going to score that amount again. But it would nice to be back on the scoresheet there.’

“My sister’s boyfriend, Stephen McKenzie, is one of the coaches there and one of my best mates Matthew, his big brother is Fraser Ogilvie, below, one of the coaches there – and he used to be at Hibs with Scott Brown.

“So there will be an added incentive with those two to get us in the next round.”

The Saughton Enclosure ?

Not the most attractive sounding ground.

Image result for prison

East Kilbride are gutted that they have been told they cannot play the game at their own ground, K park, so small it hasn’t even giot room for a whole word above the gate.

Chairman Mark Horner explained;

“I don’t know how much money it would be worth to us, But it would be life-changing for the club.

East Kilbride are just six years old, and it looks again like the guy doing the draw made an arse of it when he was told to make sure the new club got a home game with Celtic because they need the money.

“We don’t know where we would play it if we got through. I believe we can’t have it at K-Park, according to the security people. I don’t know where we could hold it, we haven’t looked into that or got that far. But it would be worth several years’ money for us and it would change the profile too. It would take the club to a new level. It would enable us to do so much. A lot of people in East Kilbride still get us mixed up with the junior side. They don’t understand the pyramid system. So it would let people know where we are and what we can achieve.”

Hamilton is the closest league ground to East Kilbride, so the game, should the Lanarkshire team get through, may take place there.

After all, its not like the Premier league side will be using it that day.

The tie of the round will be in Edinburgh again, where Hearts face Hibernian, and should the Tynecatle side go on to win the cup, which they do quite often, they will have deserved it.

The full draw is;

Motherwell v Stirling Albion or Inverness

East Kilbride or Lothian Thistle v Celtic

Dundee United v Partick

Dunfermline or Ross County v Linlithgow or Forfar

Rangers v Kilmarnock

Annan v Greenock Morton

Dumbarton v Dundee or Falkirk

Hearts v Hibernian

 The club have released a statement and taken action after the pyrotechnic display against Stranraer on Sunday;

    • CELTIC Football Club today announced that it has identified three individuals connected with the use of pyrotechnics during the Club’s match against Stranraer yesterday (Sunday).

These individuals will be suspended indefinitely from attending Celtic matches and the Club’s investigations will continue.

Yesterday’s events have again caused embarrassment to Celtic and our supporters. On numerous occasions Celtic has stated its strong opposition to the use of pyrotechnics but regrettably again, a very small number of individuals, within a ticket allocation of 2,500, have damaged the Club.

We should be very clear. Those responsible simply do not care about our Club, our reputation or the safety of our fans and we do not want them at our matches. The Club will be reviewing its ticket allocation procedures to ensure that this matter is addressed.

Ensuring the safety of our supporters and staff is always of paramount importance to Celtic Football Club. If such behaviour was to continue, the reality is it would only be a matter of time before serious injury is caused. However, we will not allow safety to be compromised by the actions of a tiny minority.

We have been inundated again by our supporters following yesterday’s events and those fans can rest assured that this issue will be dealt with in the strongest terms. We cannot and will not allow this minority to destroy the magnificent reputation which our fans have earned over many years.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters who travelled to Stranraer and positively supported the team. Your support is greatly appreciated.

No messing about, and neither should there be. Its not just about the flares, or the singing. There is an element of the support who have an attitude that they can do what they like. I’ve come across it at games, and it would be fair to say I’m not the only one.

      Stewart Regan, the SFA chief ,  anxious to talk about anything that isn’t corruption or collusion, jumped on the bandwagon;

“It is idiotic behaviour because it’s dangerous and flares in particular can threaten people’s lives.

“When you see what has happened at the weekend it makes you realise we can’t continue accepting this as a matter of course – somebody is going to get injured.

“What I wouldn’t want is for an incident to happen that forces us to change.

“I would rather the members themselves
recognised that this kind of behaviour is dangerous and we need to try and do
something about it.

“When you see the damage some of these flares can do – with the intensity of the heat when they come into contact with
individuals – they are really life threatening.

“We can’t stand back and allow it to go on. We need a grown-up conversation and we need to do something about it.

“To change the rules needs the will of the members and an appetite for change. That will be on the agenda for discussion in the next few weeks.”

      Grown up conversation ?

We hear it’ll take place as soon as the SFA find someone to represent them at that level.

      As soon as I saw Stewart Regan had said these words;

When you see the damage some of these flares can do

I immediately checked to see if there were any statistics, or even a couple of stories about incidents. I’m not suggesting that Regan is capable of not telling the truth, i’m telling you he is.

And lo, there are plenty of reports about “potential danger ” , and “risk “, but no actual stories of injury. Although i’ve no doubt they are out there, its just that Regan refers to having “seen ” the damage, which he probably hasn’t.

Any more than he saw the blatant cheating by one club transfer over to some dogdy dealings by another.

Now, don’t get me wrong. a hundred years ago, on November 5, I was in the jungle when Celtic beat Rapid Vienna, and i saw a lassie screaming when someone put a firework in her pocket ( not a euphanism ) so I’m not for a moment suggesting that they should be allowed, but is Regan the right person to deal with it ?

On account of him being bloody useless ?

I was going to raise the issue with him, but he’s blocked me on twitter.

A bit like the daily Record have with the Etims account.

How will we go on without access to the frank and fearless reporting associated with that newspaper ?

There’s only so many times I can go to the barbers in a week.

Remember we said that Tom Rogic hadn’t got round to siging his new deal, and didn’t seem overly fussed about it ?

We’ll see what that Leeds to….

      ROGIC A ‘MAJOR TARGET’

Socceroo Tom Rogic has awoken from his Celtic injury nightmare this season, starting all but three Scottish league games and scoring five goals.

But could he be set to revive one of England’s sleeping giants this January?

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of Leeds United’s top transfer targets this window, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Manager Steve Evans, who is Scottish, sees Rogic as “a natural number 10” and believes he could get his man for approximately £1 million.

Leeds have already acquired two loan players this window, with Liam Bridcutt and Mustapha Carayol arriving from Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively.

£1m ? There appears to be a lack of communication somewhere….
But Rogic isn’t guaranteed a first team place, and he won’t be at Celtic.
After missing out on so much game time already, the Aussie Ardiles may look to move somewhere that he can be first pick.
Our own scouting policy has come under criticism of late, and the arrival of Darragh Markey from St. Patricks kind of adds fuel to the fire.
The lad scored for the young team yesterday, as they beat St. johnstone 5-3, so there is promise there.
But, as one reply pointed out to in the Diary replies, he shares an agebt with Paddy McCourt and one or two others..
So , in conclusion, its become fairly obvious that Celtic just ring a few agents, tell then what they want, and wait for the videos…
      Absolutely ridiculous.
And I’m betting thats exactly how its done.
That explains why after the signing of Jozo Simunovic the club are being linked with so many eastern Europeans, as it appears the new shopping catalogue had dropped through the door….
      Some good news now, and a few words from Celtic writer , historian and all round good guy Tom Campbell ;
Well, I don’t know exactly what you heard but I’ll give you a full and detailed medical report –  you did ask for it, I’m afraid.  For some months I had been aware of a shortage of breath at times- during longish walks and frequently at my part-time job as a gigolo – but tended to ignore it.  It’s about 800 yards between where I live and the bus stop; in the morning I tended to stop once for a thirty-second breather, and at night I would stop three or four times. On 22 nd December on the way downtown I felt the need to stop three times to catch my breath, but largely dismissed it; on the way back about 10:15 pm after a pub quiz with my daughter I felt uneasy, not ill but just a little odd.  I used the phone at the bus stop to contact 911 for advice and was given very specific instructions:  find a seat at the bus shelter, loosen any tight clothing, try to relax and the paramedics will be there shortly.  I was reasssured I had done the right thing in phoning.  Two or three minutes later a police car came racing round, having been listening in;  the officer waited with me in the shelter until the ambulance arrived about five minutes later.  Oxygen, blood pressure, temperature, questions etc and off to Emergency at the Civic Hospital.   More tests, questions and a recommended stay overnight… a suggestion of some abnormalities, and and angiogram which indicated that the three main arteries delivering blood to the heart wereoperating at 50, 30 and 10% efficiency and that a triple by-passs was in order very soon.  The cardiac surgeon indicated that without the interventions already started ‘a major cardiac incident’ would have taken place within hours.
So, I was very lucky.  I had the by-pass on Christmas Day, and have been making good – if sluggish – progress since.  I left the Heart Institute about a week after the operation, and decided to spend the next two weeks here at a Senior Residence as a rehab patient; the stairs at home would have been a bit much.  Progress continues, although the main issue is fatigue at the moment.
So, that’s it for the moment – and thank you, and others, for asking.
      All the best Tom.
The picture yesterday was taken at the 1976 game in Poland against Wisla Krakow, a tie for many of us that confirmed the heady days in European competition of the late sixties and early seventies were well and truly over.
      Who’s this guy ?

Finally, its been revealed that David Bowie actually died from electrocution after attending to some DIY at home.

ralph, ive said it a million times!! these players will not sign new deals… or at least will have a good look around at what is on offer!! the wage cap now employed is between 12k and 15k a week maximum!! ALL players must adhere to this structure!! this is why ledley, matthews etc did not sign despite being offered deals!! forrest another one where nothing seems to be happening! i can only imagine that griff will be on larger scoring bonuses to make up some money!! they attach appearance fees etc to the wage now but our standard wage is not good enough to attract players of a high standard or keep our better players whos heads are turned! i have no doubts biton was told as soon as a big club offer x amount then hes away!!!

Bitton was signed with a view to moving on anyway so that would not really come as a shock.
Same for Jozo and Boyata.
The plan is evidently to build a side mainly consisting of home grown or SPFL level players who would not get those type of wages anywhere else within the Scottish game.
This side will be supplemented by young potential scouted from abroad which will be continually moved on for profit.
Bitton and Rogic are just more Ki and Wanyamas,Jozo is another VVD all will be sold to make up for any shortfall this Season.
This is why I consider Europe no longer a reasonable target but more a Bonus should we qualify.
You can’t possibly hope to do well in Europe by selling your best talent every 12 months.
Anyone who thinks any differently is sadly deluded in my opinion.

Peter Lawwell describes Celtic as a ” Champions league club ” so that makes it clear where he sees us, as for Europe being a ” bonus “? It might be a bonus for Aberdeen or Hearts, but it shouldn’t be to Celtic!

We didn’t build a 60,000 all seated stadium to host Partick and Hamilton!

I agree Monti but what Peter say’s and what Peter does is not always the same thing bud.
We built a 60,000 all seater when we were a Club rolling in dough.
We built sides over longer periods and seldom sold on for profit.
All that has changed now the current incumbents are more focussed on balance sheets than team sheets now Monti.
You know all this and unless there is serious change at Celtic expect more of the same.
We all know what needs to happen for this to change.

Fan Ownership and Control.
£20 each blah blah blah…

Charlie,
I’m not against the players moving on, in fact it’s inevitable in some if not most cases.
What I don’t like is the players that are brought in are not of the same standard as those just left.
I know we don’t have tens of millions to spend on players but I’m not talking about spending like that, in my opinion we need 3 players, central defender, central midfielder and striker.

We got Virgil for just over £2m, Wanyama just under £1m and Hooper £2.5m

There is the spine and bought for £6m, sold for about £25-27m.

If we don’t strengthen we won’t be in the CL!

CELTIC supporters should not be accepting that scenario, Dermot and his boards need to show intent, get a few quality players in, or fuck off and sell up to someone who does!

@monti
It’s not as simple as that though Monti.
Jozo is the equivalent of Van Dijk.
Bitton the equivelent of Wnayama
Griffiths the equivalent of Hooper.
What we paid for each is dependant on many variables as market prices ae seldom the same from one window to the next?
The potential of each signing is variable too as it comes down to many factors including adpating to our game in Scotland adapting to coming to a bigger Cluband ultimately down to proving their ability week in week out at a Club like ours where average just doesn’t cut it.
Van Dijk Wanyama and Hooper all improved as players at Celtic.
Hence why we made so much on them.
The same could happen with Bitton Jozo and Griffiths though I think the latter would gladly see out his days at Celtic.
Time will tell.
I TOTALLY AGREE we should be buying in better quality to aim for the CL.
Fact is we aren’t that’s not what this Board want to do.

Monti

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Charlie said,
I’m with you on most of that, I would say Virgil and Wanyama were more ‘ ready ‘ to perform at a high level than Jozo is and Biton was, I think Biton has developed now though and is a first pick for me, Griffiths and Hooper are just old fashioned goalscorers, if I had to pick one it would be Hooper for me.

I know you talk a lot about the young players coming through and I agree with you, but they must be good enough, we can’t just give players a chance because they are young, they need to be standing out and bursting a gut!

I agree on the Youth players that has to be the basic requirement at bay Club I think.
Tierney is a great example to the rest of them I feel he has come in shown a great level of ability and managed to keep a decent level of consistency throughout.
So much so Izzy’ gig is in danger now.
Which is what I want to see in every position all over the pitch.
We need to sot out the Central defensive pairing though that must be priority No1 right now.
We could well have a back 4 of ..

Wardrop Kelleher O’Connell Tierney
In a few years time think how exiting that would be at Celtic?
That would be testament to the implementation of Lennoxtown.
But it can only happen if you say these kids are good enough.

Celtic will always struggle for money when we waste £millions on shite like Boerighter and all the rest of the crud that weve wasted £millions on we have got to be much smarter than that.

As for C.L.Qualifiers,dont let the pessimists get you down. Many, many clubs acheive qualification on much smaller budgets than ours.

Get the right people in and we can still acheive it.

Agreed. I suspect that the spine of our team will be home grown Scottish players rotating with short term money makers. I would rather have our best players go on loan and increase value than lose them straight away every season.

If we continue to squander our hard earned cash by bringing in ahem players like boerighter, pukki, bangura and all the rest of the shite with the wages that are wasted and signing on fees then we will get what we deserve.

Please dont include me in your, we wont qualify for europe pish because many, many other teams qualify with much lesser budgets,

We have to be much smarter and appoint the right people.

Same with Mattews these guy sign at Celtic knowing that it’s not a long term commitment.
Come here earn a decent wage, put yourself in a big shop window and wait till an offer you want and we are happy with comes in.
The fact they have now capped the cap at a lower rate does not alter those on a contract already paying more.
That’s a nonsense players would walk if that was pushed across the table.

charlie, with respect, im telling you what has happened and what is happening… these guys where asked to sign these contract EXTENSIONS within the new period of a wage cap.. your correct players would walk, they have walked… ledley and matthews…. scott brown being captain at at the end of his career was happy to finish his career on the new package having made big money from celtic… there are now players who are close to the period where they can leave for free as they do not want to sign for the same or less money. joe ledley would of stayed for the correct offer and so would adam matthews… i know all of this to be the gospel truth, you can disagree with my ronny opinions as it is only an opinion but on this one is fact, i cannot be more clear!

Proof of what you say is not forthcoming so therefore I have to deploy common sense and think you may well be wrong.

January is renowned for being tough to sign players Monti,Clubs tend to hold onto them till the last minute hoping Clubs desperate will pay a higher premium for the player.
Pretty sure we won’t know until it is announced via the Club channels rather than the media.
Of all the names mentioned I would not be fussed if we signed both
Pantic and Sigþórsson.

same reason you dont want commons in all the time, his standards are slipping, if were giving you chance he is a player in a position where we have options

Commons is 32 bud Johansen is 25 if you were a betting man who out of those two do you think has less chance of turning round a decline in levels of performance?
My money would be on Johansen.
A players peak used to be regarded between 29-32 years of age.
At this age the player had experience and stamina along with the guile collected over many years in the game.
You used to pay a premium for guys in the 27-28 year old bracket due to this.
After 32 they used to reckon the body starts to slow as the years of training etc begin to take toll..surre there are exceptions to the rule guys like Henrik who looked after themselves throughout their careers health wise.
The fact is thoug Johansen has 2-3 years of learning the finer points of Midfield play before we see the finished article.
Commons on the other hand is facing a decline.

bgbhoy,
I would be happier if Johansen started showing the form of last season, if he can get back to that, I wouldn’t want to sell him.

George Connelly

Fantastic player – could have been a Celtic legend . Destroyed Leeds in semi-final 1970 .Very unassuming individual ,rumour at the time was he couldn’t handle publicity.

Later heard of in the construction industry possibly a brickie.

Monti,

you are correct,Goarge Connelly spoke about him last week,
what a player 40 yard diagonal passes played with check he had big Jock pleading with after he first went AWOL to come back and carry on with his career.
After his divorce he played regularely for Suachie Jnrs.
What a wasted talent.

BJF. If you are watching thank you for the heads up on the melody of Roddy McCorley.
Young Roddy McCorley went to die today at the Bridge at Toome,
born near Toome in CO.Antrim.
Poem by Ethna Carbery(Anna Johnston).
The Dubliners among others who sung the Balled of Roddy McCorley, to the tune later of Sean South Of Garryowen.

Sad are the homes round Garryowen,
since they lost their pride and joy.

Hail Hail Ya Bassa you will have me greeting the night.

Bgbhoy i agree mate , ronny is mwant to be this guru who brings through young players , fair enough he has brought them into the squad , but tierney and mcgreggor apart , he doesnt play them. I like many others want to see what allan can do, how many times does he make goals with vision playing through balls, that cant be taught. However if the manager keeps choosing johansen brown commons , we will never see these kids emerge.

There is a wage cap of 15K for new signings but that is because they are still young.
Our top earners are on 25K and we will not go beyond that but there are very few of our players on that. Trouble is real quality players with experience won’t come any cheaper than 30K and the board refuse to make exceptions.

Well there lies the problem, quality comes at a cost and with those figures no wonder we are not signing players that will excite us.
Has Lawwell cut the wage cap since the Huns died ? We can’t keep downsizing the way we are, already we have fallen a long way.
I wonder if Lawwell will raise it again if sevco get promoted this season ?

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  ewanbhoy

Our Board have been chipping away at costs since Strachan got the job.
It took them 10 years to get the borrowing back to reasonable levels after the spending under O’Neill.
The one thing that has puzzled me is why Lawwells wage has increased by over 5 times and his Bonus by 10 in the same time frame?
It’s not like we are pulling in double what did 10 year ago?.
I think his Bonus is directly linked to profit made from player sales.
Hence the push to sell at least on big one every year.
Other than that I’m lost trying to explain it.

Charlie, a friend of mine owns a haulage firm, his Dad ran it until his sad passing, when Peter was unveiled, he informed me that one of Peters past employment was to obtain tenders to move consignment from dockyard to Grangemouth power station, let’s say the tender was handed personally to him with a separate envelope for himself…in which to secure the tender, my friend took over from his Dad and just sent in the tender as should be….hence he did not secure the contract…who would have thought!!!,

George Connelly! Christ, I never recognised him, especially with the tache and striped trousers! Apologies big man. Like many of you, I last saw George when he returned to Celtic Park after several decades to do the raffle at half time against AC Milan. Do you mind the roar and applause he got? No wonder. What a gifted player, anywhere on the pitch. His case was sad, very sad and even Big Jock didn’t have the man management skills to help him. In the 69 final, the Huns had already made arrangements to parade the Cup at Ibrox, so confident they were of winning. Bless you George Connelly. Same age as me!

Lawwell is the problem then as we all well know. He doesn’t give a fuck about team. Balance sheets and bonuses are his goals.

Uralius

I can agree on that and I think we all can agree on that. So back to my checks and balances argument. We harass the Lawell by not spending, he kicks the managers arse if we are not spending, the players play like shite if the manager is not doing right by them, at which point we sort out Lawell by not spending/supporting. So how do we sort out our club? By supporting the manager and team, while placing economic sanctions on the club. Imagine if 1 day all the home support decided not to buy any pies. That would be the first sanction.

Great to hear of Tom’s progress. About 10 years ago I went through the same symptoms and almost the same outcome. The only difference is, it took me nearly 6 months and the order of a long brown box before I recovered and here I am still breathing far too much. So, please pass on my very best wishes to Tom along with my prayers for a speedier recovery than mine. Given I saw that bright light at the end of somewhere at one time and am still here to tell the tale, shows the power of modern medicine, the expertise in our health service – in spite of the vast criticisms- and the great truth that we know not the day nor the hour. It also puts into perspective the important things in life; that football is only a game and should be seen in the context of all else in life and that the success of Celtic should be a major priority in the life of any genuine football supporter :). Take care and get well soon, Tom.

Stop it with the O’Connell already… I think nowhere near good enough to start based solely on what I have seen of him live (which admittedly has been short.) We need better or will remain a soft touch through Rogi and Bion to whatever CB pairing we use. Sometimes you just have to hit…God knows it happens to us often enough. Bit Neanderthal (whom I believe had a bit of a bad press around this, their intelligence…not their ability to play centre half)but needs must first, Todd and McFarlane can come later.

@bgbhoy
I have been paying close attention to your wage arguments and due to your conviction believe you. I do however have some questions.

1. If the players have appearance fees does this mean they also have unused substitute fees? (Stokes)
2. Are there any players who took a large wage cut last year, but have a large goal bonus? (Commons)
3. Are these goal bonuses the reason why our players don’t play each other in on goal?
4. Are the defenders on clean sheet bonuses? Is that why they look like deer in headlights every time they are the last man?
5. Do you know if there are competition bonuses in place?

Thanks

I can answer some of those questions. Commons took w wage cut to sign on again in life with the 15k wage cap. As far as I know the whole team get a bonus for clean sheets but the goalkeeper and defender get more. Can’t answer re not playing each other in. I know they where on 100k a man tax free to reach the ucl group stages

With regards to the wage structure, Hopper is on 30k a week at Sheffield united, I think, due to te recent TV deals down there we cant attract the level of player we used to. The Wanyamas, Ledleys, Hoopers etc are being hoovered up by championship sides now, they’re offering much more money than we are. I assume we are still trying to attract qulaity players behind the scenes, we’re just missing out on them because of the ridiculous salaries down south.
