Celtic Diary Wednesday January 6: One In, and One On The Way.

And Carlton Cole is going back to West Ham!

But only for a testimonial in March.

The picture above is from Amsterdam airport, which notably  has its own facility for the exclusive use one Dutch player just before he boarded the plane to Glasgow. We should have known then.

The one in is only on trial, but not in the same way that Leigh Griffiths or Anthony Stokes would understand the term.

Norwegian wonderkid-theres a lot of wonderkids around these days-Kristoffer Ajer has leapt at the chance to show what he can do at Lennoxtown, despite interest from a number of top European clubs.

Currently with Start Kristiansand, the 17 year old is  already a regular for his side, and at 6 foot 5 obviously has a lot of physical development still to do.

He’s got a year left on his current deal, but the influence of Ronny Deila might just swing a move to Glasgow for the youngster. Like it didn’t with Martin Odegaard.

“Kristoffer has been allowed to visit Celtic, We got a call from Celtic, and decided that Ajer deserved to get the chance.”

The trial is likely to see if he will benefit from joining Celtic now, or at some time in the future when there’s less time left on his contract and he’ll be cheaper.

Instead of relying on the Scottish press to answer that most important of questions-is he any bloody good or does his agent need a new swimming pool?-we’ll turn to Christian Wulff, a Norwegian living in Glasgow who knows a bit about fottball over there.

Well, we won’t ask him as such, we’ll just copy his twitter and hope he doesn’t notice.

Ajer’s hype is big; 18 in April he already has 45 (36 starts /7 subs) top flight games with 9 goals and 3 assists + 4 goals in 2 cup games.

Ajer mostly used as central att. midfielder, quite an unorthodox no. 10 at 6’5” tall! Also been 2nd striker – future is centre mid IMO.

Maybe the idea is to use him to hold the ball up instead of a lone striker, adding an extra weapon to the attacking armoury…or maybe its just that we don’t have scouts who understand we need more than just midfielders in the team.

Thats the one in, what about the one on the way…

Well, he is currently considering a short term offer from Celtic, on less wages than he used to be on when he was here before……

Er, no. not him. Although he is available on loan, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Not him either.

Don’t even go there.

According to a drunk guy we spoke to-well, listened to-its none other than

But there may be competition for him…

Adelaide United will struggle to be a serious contender this year in any competition unless a goal machine turns up.

Greek international Georgios Samaras, 30, may be the perfect fit. He’s available, has an Australian passport, has scored goals galore for Celtic (48 goals in 156 games) and featured for Manchester City early in his career — but he won’t come cheap.

Well, it will give us something else to moan about, or cheer about instead of Ronny Deila.

I’ve no idea if theres any truth in what the fellow says, and before we could ask him for some sort of credible source he ran off, shouting something about us never taking him alive.

But then again, a credible source, on here ?

While we’re at it, theres talk in the Netherlands that a striker is on his way…

Celtic have got their transfer boots out and marched their way into contention to sign the wonderfully named Wout Weghorst, according to claims in the Netherlands.

Weghorst is a 23 year striker who currently plays for Eredivisie club Heracles Almelo, and he’s huge. At 6ft 512 in, Weghorst is a towering youngster who Celtic obviously believe could use his physical prowess to good effect in Scotland.

The youngster was supposed to be moving to Wales with Cardiff City, the club making an approach for Weghorst recently. Cardiff’s attempts were confirmed by Heracles themselves, but Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf say that’s off, at least for now, and Celtic have swooped in to try and hijack things.

There’s no mention of a fee, but this isn’t likely to be a big money transfer, and the most Celtic would be prepared to pay is probably a couple of million Euros.

Another at six foot five, which makes me think that someone has told the on call agents to get us a six foot five player.

Reminds me of the time i was having a light refreshment with a chap from work who was a scout-if thats the right word-for Blackburn Rovers, who during our chat got a call about a possible prospect.

His first questions-how tall is he ? And how fast is he. ?

Blackburn are currently shite.

But Celtic certainly do need a bit more height, and a bit more strength in the team, its just sending out a call for anyone to fit a certain template as opposed to spotting talent is a little worrying, but it does fit in with a number of criticisms aimed at Ronny Deila.

As you may may have gathered, I’m not comfortable with the way the scouting is done at Celtic, and if it wasn’t for a few successes that have brought in a fair bit of money, there’d probably be cause for change, but as long as the odd gem drops in for a few months on his way to England, things probably won’t change.

With regards to that other target, Aleksandr Pantic, we’ll turn again away from the Scottish press to website The 4th Official for an assessment;

The 23-year-old central defender has been a subject of interest from Celtic scouts on a number of times and he can possibly the answer of Celtic’s defensive woes. Pantic did not Deila down with his performance as Eibar kept a clean sheet against Real Betis in their 4-0 La Liga win. When a manager travels a long way to watch his target play a game in person, it suggests his level of interest. Pantic can surely be someone who can partner Simunovic very well at Celtic defence.

Pantic graduated from the famous youth academy of Serbian outlet Partizan and made his professional debut for Rad back in 2011. Then he joined Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade in 2012 and played 15 games over the course of one year. He was signed by Spanish giants Villarreal in 2013 but could not become a first team regular at Estadio El Madrigal. He was loaned to Cordoba in 2014-15 and Eibar for this season and doing really well for the Armeros. He featured in a total of 21 games for different youth setups of the Serbian national team.

Pantic has a brilliant ball intercepting ability. He is aerially very strong. He is tactically and technically sound and does not dive into tackles and plays out of danger. He will be a brilliant coup by Ronny Deila and also be available for a much lesser fee as he is out of contract at the end of the season. Any possible deal is likely to be made simpler by the fact that Pantic and Simunovic share the same agent. Blackett is currently on loan at Celtic from Manchester United and the arrival of Pantic will not only add quality in the team but also depth. They also have a relatively younger squad apart from the likes of few experienced ones and Pantic can also gel easily at Celtic Park.

Ah. Tyler Blackett.

Now theres a man whose agent deserves a new swimming pool. In fact, the SFA should hire him to take over the marketing of the game in Scotland, because he has an unquestionable ability to sell things that are perhaps not quite of the quality the buyer requires.

Incidentally, manager Deila has clarified the position on Blackett;

“Tyler is still here. He has not been recalled by Manchester United. We haven’t heard anything about him going back to Manchester United., the bastards.

We hear he has tried to contact the United, but every time someone answers and he mentions blackett, the guy at the other end collapses in a fit of giggles.

Meanwhile, there was a pre trial hearing yesterday concerning the former owners of now defunct Rangers and the basket of assets that was sold during its demise.

Court reporter James doelman is typing up the indictments, and he reckons theres about twenty seven pages of them.

Heres page one.. with a big thank you to him for keeping us informed, without fear or favour.

James Doleman

If you want another view on the goings on yesterday, theres also in depth analysis from tv expert Chris Graham;

I wonder what Whyte thinks he’s achieving by taking his ‘lady friend’ to court all the time? Just a misunderstood family man….?

The amount of charges has risen from eight to fifteen, and its not for me to say, but I think that perhapos we are about to hear a lot more about what went on during those days when the good ship rangers hit the rocks, exploded and went to the bottom of the sea.

And in the following days when everyone said it didn’t.

One day they will make a movie of these shennannigans.

Who will play the main roles-any ideas?

What is the script wi the attacking midfielders , we allready have allan rotting away , i suspect christie will go the same route. Heonly ever picks the same midfielders so where is this boy going to play? Is ronny even bringing these players in? On a more positive note the korean guy looks decent

Korean Guy .. Suk is currently 3rd place in the Portuguese goal charts with 9 … Will play for Setubal tonight against the league leaders Sporting .. Has been the target of speculation last week that he was being targeted by Sporting .. BUT yesterday a new twist was revealed … According to Portuguese press he will sign for Porto on thursday for 1.5 million euro. Porto are buying 70 (or 75 depends where you read it) % of his pass .. with his agent holding the rest …

iancelt59

Well two more additions like pantic anf korean would be great. I think a bit more quality, esecially someone who can pass out of the back will improve bilton and johansen in the two man def mid position until brown gets back. Seventeen year olds arent the answer we need atm, we need seasoned professionals unless the young ones are outstanding.

Still affected by the induced comal loke state from the partick game and just hope the hearts game wasnt a blip of good form in an otherwise downward spiral into chaotic ineptitude

I’ve seen Weghorst play a couple of times. Might be something in the story as he’s quite alike to Kramer (the boy we were after but signed for Feyenoord). He’s a decent poacher-type player who hangs around the box for a whole game. Not sure if he’s up to standards, definately lacks quality for Europe atm and can’t see him becoming a worldbeater in 2 yrs. Heracles also have Tananne who would be a far better attacking option, the guy’s out of contract too. Might just be after him (hopefully)!

Has the Pavel Srnicek quip been removed yet?

Good stuff from Bertie Auld over on CQN, Bertie was saying he would ” Make Commons our main creative attacking force and called for Deila to give “Griffiths support up front”!
I have been saying this for two seasons now.

Never mind Bertie, some will be along with a bag full of statistics to tell you and thousands of other Celtic supporters that we are all wrong!

Plum,
I didn’t like the Srnicek ‘joke’ part of yesterday’s diary, neither did a number of fellow Tim contributors, I have the balls to say so, unlike a few regulars on here who live in fear of speaking out against Ralph.
I didn’t like it yesterday and I still don’t like it today.
As for ‘ crying every day about Deila ‘?
Well, I tell you what plum, I’ll let you look around the stadium ( if you know how to get there) and gauge the mood of the majority in the stadium.

The club is being run down by the board and an inept management team, that is a FACT!
Oh I nearly forgot, if you don’t like my contribution on here, I don’t give a fuck!

You “don’t give a fuck” but wrote that foaming-mouthed nonsense about Deila.

You live in a fantasy land where Celtic are the biggest club in the known universe. Get a grip on yourself and gain some perspective. We’re a pishy wee Scottish team attempting to transform in the face of a changing global football market.

Don’t let that piece of sense get in the way of your daily rant against a man whom you have never met though…

Every game KC plays he get the opportunity to play the number 10 role behind the striker. He may not start the game in that position but he is always moved there, given the opportunity he offers nothing in that position. Why? Because KC only cares about KC. A true number 10 puts the ‘TEAM’ first. It really is funny how you take other peoples ‘OPINION’ and merge it with your ‘OPINION’ to make a fact.

I ave just read Bertie Aulds thoughts on CQN and to be honest his remarks don’t supprise me Bertie like so many is a romantic when it comes to Celtic.
Great player, achieved great things in the game and rightly a Legend at Celtic.
However…
Kris Commons for all his positives has plenty drawbacks as a player these drawbacks have been highlighted by the new approach brought in by the Manager.
He’s 32 now,is one of the slowest players at the Club, his first touch can be brutal at times,he seldom tracks back and when he loses posession he seldom makes any great effort to get it back.
When he was the focus of Lennys Diamond Formation most of the build up play went through him , the build up under Lenny was slower though and not dependant on Commons having any pace or demands on him tracking back.
Griffiths has scored 20 goals already this Season playing in this System he’s well on course to smash the 25 ANY Celtic striker SHOULD be hitting in a Season in the League.
He has also passed up on a rake of chances that even he admitted should have been buried.
This System in effect is NOT RELIANT on Kris Commons bagging goals every week as in previous Season after Hooper.
Last Season we created more than 17 chances per game on average.
That was peimarilly down to the success of deploying 3 attacking Support players directly behind the frontman.
We averaged 84.4 Goals a Season over the 9 year Period deploying the previous systems playing 2 and 3 up front.
Last season we scored 84 deploying 1.
But more importantly we only conceded 17 which is a record have not matched in the previous 96 Seasons.
The goals were spread throughout the side more the likes of Armstrong Mackay Stevens came in and added to that tally by performing better than they have so far this Season the same goes for Johansen last years Player of the Year in Scotland.
At nopoint in the past 4 years has anyone come in and bid for Kris Commons perhaps Bertie might want to consider why that is?
I think it’s because he is overrated but hey that’s only an opinion.
Our issues this Season have come from 2 departments.
The defence and for the sake of repeating myself again it’s well documented the fact we lost two Key men in Central defence and have subsequently had serious injury issues across the back 4.
However the main issue has been the injury to Scott Brown as the DM position has become problematic in his absence.
He is the driving force in our Midfield and Bitton worked well in this key area to this System.
He is right though we do need to be buying quality, proven quality that does not require developing and the buck stops with the Board on that score.
Deila can only operate with the funds and players they say we can afford.
Modern Football is based on Stats, facts and data Managers and Coaches use these factors to determine the best way froward in every scenario.
The bottom line is though if you are buying players in who are needed developed then you have no option but to allow the coach/Manager the time to develop them.
It would appear the romantics out there have no patience for any of that.

This is right, Bertie is from another time and football had changed a great deal since then. If two or more strikers is the solution, what is the problem? As Charlie pointed out numerous times, we are scoring as many and more with one up front. Also we are missing a lot of chances that could have been scored. I myself think there is no debate here the facts speak for themselves when it comes to goals scored.

Boil it in water at 100 degree Celsius at sea level pressure. I know that would work as its a fact like the number of goals scored using one striker is as many and more then using two in previous years. So again if two strikers are the solution what is the problem?

BB,
What about the Psychological effect on the opposition side when facing two strikers?

If you went into the oppositions dressing room and asked the manager and players, would you rather face one or two Celtic strikers?
What do you think they would say?

Stats lie, we could win 5 games in a row 5-0 then in the next 5 draw 0-0….

Then i would continue to purchase young Scottish talent to build up the Development squad.
The S.F.A. needs to be cleared out and Sevco needs to be Liquidated, only after that can Scottish Fitba be cleansed, then F.I.F.A. needs the same.

If we played Griffiths and Stokes as a partnership I think that would work well in Scotland, Scepovic and Ciftci provide the back up and competition for the first two I mentioned.
Get GMS and Armstrong firing on all cylinders, introduce Allan and Christie into the side, Play Commons and Forrest from the start of every game.
Bitton? Get him told to up his fucking game and attitude, get Brown fit and snarling in there.
Defence? Get Janko fit, Lustig can fight it out with him for RB, Sign a quality central defender to play beside Simunovic, left back is Tierney.

In goal, Gordon is number one, but give Logan Bailly one home game per month to find out what we have.

January transfers: Concentrate on the defence and only bring in a striker if he is far better than what we have!

Monti

But Craig Gordon is average in the Scottish league, is the Belgian league stronger or weaker than the SPFL?

BelgoBhoy
Reply to  BelgoBhoy

I’d say it’s stronger as you’ve got 3-4 “bigger” teams (Bruges, Anderlecht, Gent and Standard Liege) and we all know what happend to our beloved 2nd horse in the spl. It’s certainly becoming stronger trough the years with growing presence in Europe, the national team and elevated transfer budgets. Bailly was a good player for Genk 5 years ago but he always kept his wild edge that made him prone to mistakes. Then again so was Gordon in previous European campaigns….
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a decent 2nd keeper. He’s experienced and he’s able to produce a wee bit of magic from time to time. But he’s over the hill and lacks fighting spirit to become number 1, he even indicated that he’s ok with being 2nd choice in the Belgian press a couple of months ago.

“I knew beforehand that I would not play much. Craig Gordon is the number one, done. I knew what I was getting into. If I would wonder every week why I do not play, I don’t really help the team. But that does not mean that I do not do my best.”

“Of course I miss that feeling, but I also partly opted for security. I went into my last contract year in Leuven, while here at Celtic could immediately sign for three seasons.”

“The financial aspect played a major role. I earn a multiple of what I got here in Belgium. In no Belgian club I could earn as much as here.”

That leaves Griffiths Finnbogason Cole and Nesbitt. (Charlie Saiz)

Keep Stokes, bring Scepovic back, sell Cole and terminate Boerrigter’s contract.(Monti)

Keep Stokes. Punt Scepovic, Cole and Ciftci.Sign Finnbogason. Develop Nesbitt. We all agree: let go of Boerrichte, none of us can spell his name anyway. Sign a good centre back to partner Simunovic. Keep Ambrose and Boyata as backup. Play Allan and Christie when fit. We can’t sell Izzy in case Tierney gets injured. Tierney did break a leg in his past and we have no other backup. Kris Commons is the only player we have who can get us a goal when we need it. He needs to play wherever he wants to. I think the middle of the attacking three suits him best. (Devoy)

Devoy45

Point taken but it depends where he plays and who is alongside him. I think Commons plays best when he is directly in front of goal. I think sometimes he could be a striker on his own up front! I still rate Commons the way I rated Griffiths even when Ronny wasn’t playing Griffiths. I reckon Commons has two good years left and we need him playing where he is most effective. I don’t see him as a wide player, not quick enough for a start. He is maybe the only player we have who can conjure a goal out of nothing with his back to the goal, pretty useful in Europe as he has proven. On another topic, I see where the Celtic Foundation had what, nearly three times as much donation this year as last? I’m disappointed though since not enough fans like us donated in order to test the waters for a player fund. Finally, I would welcome big Sammi back as he did add something to our attack.I didn’t like the way he left our club or was forced out.I liked the big man, as frustrating as he was.

Jim,
Spot on and 100% correct.
Regardless of who thinks what about Deila, the reality is, he is not getting results and performances in Europe and some of our performances in the SPFL have been woeful, results in some games are alarming!

He is causing untold damage the longer he stays, Lawwell should just hold his hands up and admit he got it wrong.
Then get on with appointing a real manager.
Deila out!

You all want to sell players that can only be done if someone else wants them and if the player is willing to leave perhaps for less than what he is paid at Celtic Park

Think of your strongest 11 prior to the start of the season and check how many times it wasn’t available due to injury or suspension

Commons was slow at 29 but the less he plays is some folks eyes he has become faster how many defence splitting passes has he made this year

Celtic need a creative midfielder that can open up the packed defences we face most weeks and when we do a lot of other players around him will look better Remember the year before five thirty and his second coming

When real Rangers were being financially doped under “Walter” of mitty there was no one in the press demanding they should have been judged on Europe as marker of just how well they were doing.
Skip forward to Celtic dominating the Domestic scene (currently on target for 5 trophies-there’s that top of the League thing again sorry to be a bore)all of a sudden League and Cup Doubles are the norm in the pess and some declare even trebles should be fairly simple to attain.
No now it’s Europe that’s the bench mark according to them and low and behold some of our support are in agreement.
That’s the link between and you.
I say you because I personally could not give two fucks what they say because I know for the past 10 years at least Celtic have been downsizing in terms of players and budgets whilst the chasm between the haves and the have nots widens still.
Now whether any of those who are in denial of the effect of losing £10m a year in real terms through the implosion of real Rangers (Peter Lawwell stated that as fact by the way)agree or not but since then we have become a Club that no longer builds a team for long term gains but buys to sell for the short term gain.
This has had a terrible affect on the current set up.
Ronny DeiLa may not be the worlds greatest Manager(no one is claiming he is) but he is a Manager who has a clear plan on how we can improve our chances against tougher opposition ,hecan Develop raw talent into decent talent whilst maintaining a push for Trophies on the Domestic front.
If Celtic are serious about Champions League then we/they really should be spending like a Champions League outfit.
The fact is we aren’t.
Armstrong Ciftci Boyata Mackay Steven Janko Blackett Simunovic are not European Level players.YET.

Time will as always be the judge of that Bg.
To alot time you also need patience.
Again patience as always is the key to Football.
If Celtic were languishing in 3rd or 4th spot right now out the League Cup to a Clyde or Morton and had dropped points in 7 or 8 games due to the lack of goals bring scored.
I would be on here asking for Deila to go.
But the simple fact of the matter is Deila lost his central pairing fromlast Season, lost Lustig Mulgrew Janko Brown and Jozo to injuries, had Johansen tip up with his head up his arse, had Armstrong unable topass a ball 10 feet to feet on a bowling green of a pitch and yet despite all that..
48 goals scored in 20 games 2 games lost in 20 still in the Cup ,sat on top of the League by 3 points and a game in hand.
That’s why he get’smy backing..form is temporary, injuries are temporary this team has not even got out of 1st gear this season.
We have gears to find last years form should be telling you this.

Makes sense to me Charlie, but I find myself frustrated that these players seem to be getting poorer technically. I can only assume that the fitness regime is playing havoc with their muscle memory. Too many shots off target, too many shite crosses and too many poor passes (Commons included in the last 2)

Some players can’t handle the pressure of being at a Big Club Andy the pressure and scrutiny these guys are under is horrendous at times.
Two bad games at Celtic and your the whipping bhoy.
Bitton Tierney Griffiths McGregor Rogic all seem to be doing fine christ even James Forrest can play 4 games on the bounce without breaking down?

Andy

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

I did notice Griffiths did say if you can’t play under pressure then you shouldn’t be at this club. I am likely reading too much into it, but Shifty did get hooked at half time. This brings me onto my next point Craig Gordon made a howler last season and the fans started chanting his name. He said that meant the world to him and sorted him right out. I prefer the term “The Support” rather than fans because of the definitions of both.

Tierney is only getting a chance because Izzy is almost done, Mcgregor is only getting a chance because Brown is out.
Griffiths ability has nothing to do with Deila, Rogic is only getting in the team because Deila dislikes Commons.

GMS and Armstrong have Went backwards under Deila, Henderson has been sent out on loan and we have yet to see young Nesbit.

Deila continues to play circus clowns at the back and no matter how many mistakes he makes, Gordon is in every game?
We haven’t beaten Kilmarnock in two attempts, Hearts have taken points off us twice in the league, a ten man Aberdeen beat us and we are struggling against the Hamilton Accies and Partick Thistles of the world, not to forget about Motherwell beating us at home quite comfortably?
Add to all that the abject, embarrassing failure in Europe over Deila’s reign, I ask you again….where is the progress.

Good day to you sir!

I get frustrated at players inability to complete a simple task, that fucking awful square ball across Midfield?
Under Lenny it used to drive me nuts..pass the ball a yard or two in front of the moving player that way he doesn’t break strideand it keeps the move going.
Naw pas it flat and the player has to either stop or check back once he’s received it as the opposition have that extra second to close him down.
Basics man.
They can do it they showed it last season they played some really nice stuff at times ,free flowing quick football pinging it about making average teams look ..well average.

The MSM must love Celtic so much that they help us out by constantly pointing out our failings and how we must be judged – only on European results. They and many pundits claim the manager is poor, the players are poor, the system is poor the end is nigh and many Celtic supporters it seems, say the same thing. Yet we sit top of the league, solvent and financially stable, a game in hand, in the two cups and our development team sit top of their league. As players and the system develops there will be pisspoor performances and some pretty good ones. Hopefully we will see more consistency going forward on the pretty good side, we are still waiting for that. I’m still at a loss to know what a new manager would do differently ( clearly spending big is out ) to become the European force that the MSM need us to be to get their respect

Haven’t you heard?
Moyes is to come in spend £20m on a CB play 4-4-2 with Brown Commons Armstrong Forrest and Mackay-Steven in Midfield and Leigh Griffiths up front with Mario Balotelli.
Champions League guaranteed and trebles a plenty as Celtic swashbuckle past every side in Scotland winning by at least 5 goals every week.
Though remember those trebles are not be rejoiced about because Matthew Wankstain lead reporter of the Daily Beano says it so.

“One thing about Ronny is that he has a good track record of getting the best out of young talent and this is probably the right time for Kristoffer(Ajer) to think of going to the next level. Ronny is the kind of manager who can get the best out of him without putting him under too much pressure. He is sensible that way. It is also probably good for the player now to have a different challenge although I do know that there has been strong interest from Rosenburg too.” Vidar Riseth

Yeah the football was that shite that it stopped us getting to the Champions league reasonably regularly, getting to a European final, getting to the later stages of the Champions league twice, a treble in MON’S first season, having been woeful the previous year.
The football was so bad that Henrik was desperate to leave, that’s why he signed an extension and Man Utd couldn’t buy him, even though they tried to twice.

Think stats are useful but how about getting stats on how the fans feel en masse.

What about telling us how many games have been played when the team played shite boring lifeless football? And how many times we were lucky to win? How many corners did partick have..about 10? Probably a record for them in the history of their club at parkhead.

What im watching is really unispiring
The game is about being entertained. Our stats may be impressive but being practically sound if thats your point, it isnt cutting it with the fans.

Game is about getting gasps out of the crowd and a few roars. Not being dominated by perennial strugglers and european nobodies. Its fucking celtic we are talking about here. Ive tried to con myself into thinking everything is alright. I dont think we will win the treble we are too inconsistent and its only a matter of time before we get gubbed three or four nil as it stands
