Maintaining Success Is The Difficult Bit

Charlie Saiz sends us this thought provoker…..

A real cracking result unfolded at Celtic Park as we humbled a decent, talented, spirited Aberdeen side.
The scoreline in the end probably flattered us overall as the first half was way short of our recent performance levels sustained both at home and abroad in Europe.
Truth be told I was fearing for us with 30 minutes gone it looked to me as if they were hungrier for the result and we were feeling for the first time this Season the effects of a Big European encounter.
The 10 men for 60 minutes in the San Siro certainly never helped that’s for sure.
However 40 minutes in and the signs were the energy was coming back and the second wind was kicking in the goal was a serious body blow to Aberdeen as the challenger felt the full force of our first shot that landed.
The second half was the proverbial second half in game of two halves.
We put Aberdeen to the sword they were down and out come the last 10 minutes it had become a matter of how many?
John Guidetti kept us wondering of course as he tried his very best to foil every move we created and I thought looked out of place in this current squad.
Which leads me to the point of this particular ramble.
Ronny Deila has taken a reasonably successful Celtic squad altered it’s way of thinking and doing added a few well placed additions and come up with what I think is a real recipe for success and when I say success I mean sustained success which I don’t personally think was achievable under the approach when Lenny was boss.
Whilst the buy to sell Policy deployed throughout his reign reaped great Financial reward I think when you consider the overall results the physical rewards on the Park could have been better.
I don’t blame any one aspect in particular I think Neil probably over achieved in Europe 2 years ago as we reached the last 16 with a healthy points total but under achieved domestically as he found it hard to sustain both simultaneously.
The Board in this aspect did not help I don’t think as they continued to ship in and ship out players for Big Money moves at times when Neil could have done without it.
Selling the spine of your squad during Champions League Qualification is not in my mind the best preparation for playing in that particular Competition.
Even your Barcas and Bayerns would struggle with that approach.
Then to replace these guys with untested players from all over the globe is high risk in itself I think.
Players need time to settle and adjust and as we all know some never do as they struggle to cope with the rough and tumble of the pinball style of the SPL.
Even the likes of Wanyama struggled to cope at first being caught in possession and thinking he had all day to pick a pass.
Not so in Scotland it’s not Italy or Holland where you can spark up a Cigar read the paper before picking a pass.
No I think the new approach under Deila is best suited to our Club and new style of play under him.
When he came in a lot of Loans arrived with him and whilst I agree Loans are never ideal they can sometimes work out great like the Fraser Forster deal or work to your advantage like Jason Denayer has.
Whilst there will always be your Bergets ,Tonevs ,Wakasos and Guidettis guys who either won’t make it or are looking at us as a stepping stone to the promised land
not all of these will have been Deilas choosing I dont’ think most of them were most likely penned in by Park and Lenny prior to his exit.
But what we do know is Deila has targeted both Armstrong and Mackay-Steven as players who he seen as players who could drop into his system and approach.

It’s no coincidence both have slotted in like a dream I think he that is Deila knew this was always going to be the case.
The fact is both have been successful at United, both have cut their teeth in the SPL and were up to speed with the Scottish Game, both had technical Ability, pace and determination to go to the next level.
We picked both these guys up for a song seriously if we sold both these players right now I reckon our money would be more than doubled.
That’s not only terrific business by the Board but it is also low risk and sustainable provided you buy locally and only buy the proven best that suit your approach and plan.
No need to go scouting the globe or taking risks on players like Pukki, Boerrigter,Balde,Scepovic and Juarez to name but a few.
For every Wanyama there are 2 or 3 failures at least.
All of whom who have proved up to this point to be a complete waste of time, effort and most importantly money.

We have missed one or two players under our own noses the past few Seasons chasing these unknowns,Robertson,Russell and Gauld would be three examples I think would have like Zig and Zag dropped into our squad and kicked on no danger.
The quality was there to see and they were proving it under our nose.

No brainer for me and many others but apparently so for our Board at the time.

We have now reached the phase under Deila where real success is just round the corner after a bumpy start to the journey the Deila Express seems to have gathered real momentum as Europe went from disaster to recognised achievement we exited the Europa heads held high and now are in serious contention to complete a Treble.

A feat we have only managed a few times in our entire existence.

That is a success in itself because the side he inherited could not cope on all fronts it was either one or the other and it is now being done with an approach which is Sustainable and with less risk involved.
To make it work however the Board I think need to find a better balance in buying to sell.
I still feel we need to play the market for it to be sustained indefinitely.
Buy locally where it is possible, keep hold of these players whilst buying wisely in the wider market.
I think if we can sustain a solid Foundation to our squad with Scottish born players and add genuine quality to that Squad with proven Global talent whilst maintaining a healthy buy to sell policy with 1 or 2 others coming in then we can sustain the approach with a view to much more success on the park.

Deilas approach to Formation and Fitness allows these players to play the same way week in week out regardless of Opposition.
The more we do it the easier it will become to sustain it for the full game and the more we target individuals who have the basics already there like Zig and Zag then the easier it will become to keep it ticking over.
The Support love this style too the pictures of Brown and Deila embracing is proof there is a real buzz reverberating around the players now and it is also back in the stands.
It’s in our make up to attack teams it is the Celtic Way after all and it can be achieved and sustained indefinitely so long as we play the Market a bit wiser than we have in recent years.

Utter rubbish re the buy n sell policy
Players want to play at the highest level , Scottish league extremely poor , a player who has a ltd shelf life should not be expected to gamble on 6 European ties to try and build a international carear.
Players come players go ,

The highest level is the Champions League………We are one of only 5 clubs in the UK that can offer this, we need to build our season around the pre-qualifying games we hit pre-season.

Spot on.
Champions League is the biggest shop window in Football.
Ki made us around ยฃ4m for us off the back of it as he was mediocre in the SPL for us when he left and could not secure a regular start.
English teams that come in for our players do not do so on the strength of these players performances in the SPL they come for the CL Games at CP and see how they perform at a level they know for CERTAIN cannot be matched by any League in Europe.

As only the very best get to play in it from all over Europe.

So you consider selling Wilson, Wanyama and Hooper in the same window was a great move during a Champions League Qualification then?
Financially yes it was fantastic but for Neil Lennons plans a major kick in the haw maws I think.
Just an opinion mind.
Scott Brown has played at the highest Level no less than 50 times at Celtic.
In that time he has faced Pirlo Seedorf Inzaghi Kaka Deco Henry Messi Xavi Inniesta Ronaldinho Zambrotta Costa Cardozo Pereira Cazorla Pirez Giggs Ronaldo Rooney Nanni Fabregas Van Persie Fernandinho Lewandoski Mozart Pavlyuchenko Nesta Ambrosini Di Natale Matic Cardozo De Zeeuw Kallstrom Alba Sanchez Busquets Neymar Muntari De Jong Balotelli Vidal Medel Shaquiri to name but a few.
He could have went elsewhere when he signed for Celtic Spurs and Everton were interested but instead he chose to come to us.
Having done so his International career has been fine.
The fact he has Captained his Country and played 42 times for it is testament to that.
If you target Scottish players like Brown,Armstrong and Mackay-Steven theres is greater likelihood they will stick around for a greater length of time than say someone plucked from obscurity or from a Lower League English team.
These guys tend to have an eye on the money and the promised land down South.
Too many have left for the bright lights and disappeared into obscurity.
Very few will make it to the Big Time.
I look at Armstrong and see a guy studying for a Law Degree that’s not a player who thinks Football is the be all and end all that’s a guy with one eye on his long term future.
Perhaps he like Vrown will be happy enough going to a San Siro or a Nou Camp once or twice every few years or so as he mounts up his Medal collection plying his trade in his homeland in front of 60k of the finest fans on the planet?
Who knows time will tell on that.
It’s all one buying your Van Dijks and Ki’s but these guys have an eye on the big time before they even set foot in Celtic Park these are theguys who we hope come, play well get punted for Big money which funds the next big moves.

A balance has to be found here we cannot sustain buy to sell indefinitely because at some point you will ppick up mediocrity and have to rely on the likes of Brown Amstrong Gordon M-Steven Griffiths Stokes Forrest etc to see us through.

So these guys have to be the best of what is available in Scotland.
And they are as proved yet again in MIlan and against Aberdeen.
Just my opinion as I say you don’t have to share it.

Spot on Charlie.
If a Larsson or a Van Dijk becomes available at the right price obviously it is a no-brainer to go for them but our scouting system is seriously flawed if we need to buy cartloads of foreign duds in order to find them.Bangura, Michu, Lassad, Brozek, Pukki, Balde, Borrigter, Scepovic – or Mackay-Steven and Armstrong?
I know what I prefer.
I’m not totally sold on Delia yet but he has done us a good turn by buying Zig and Zag. Not only have these two fitted in and produced straight away, against Inter they blew apart the idea that you always need to buy foreign to compete in Europe.
All we need to do now is not sell the spine of the team before the Champions League qualifiers and we might be on to something.

I hate to burst your bubble Charlie, but Zig and Zag,were on Lenny’s radar last season.Problem was United wouldn’t sell.
As for taking risks with unknowns in the European market, this should be a major No No.Quality before quantity.9M wasted on Pukki,Balde,Boerrigter and Scepovic tell you these are COSTLY risks.
Go for players in Championship/First Division.Players we see every week and know all about. They can adapt to our game overnight.
I would ONLY buy European,if it’s KNOWN.5M for a target-man,yes,why not.
The key to buying, developing is MONEY.We have to be in CL groups EVERY year. This keeps us dominating Scottish football. And will lead us,hopefully,to have the mother of all parties, when we win 10-IN-A-ROW!

You haven’t burst my bubbly Holy they may well have been on the Radar but went and signed crap instead.

And for a much bigger price.

The point is Deila has ensured we went back and got them both.
They fit into his plans perfectly.
No need for a transitional phase or a 3 month bedding in phase boom in you go get on with it.

They have very successfully got on with it.
So much so in fact both Forrest and Commons aren’t really missed are they?
Doubt that would have been the case under Lenny myself 2 of his favourites.
The problem with targeting players from the Championship and First Division down south is they already have a lust to play in the Premierhype from the off.
Hooper,Ledley,Forster were never going to be 5 year men at Celtic the fact 2 of them left for Norwich and Palace proves that.

Look at them now.

I am totally with you on the European players we could have had Finnbogason for the money we WASTED on Boerrigter ,Scepovic and Pukki but at that time Lawwell and co baulked at the ยฃ6m Heerenveen would have dealt at at the time.

He would have scored a barrow load in Scotland and perhaps in Europe too.

That mentality has to stop for me.
Pay the money for proven quaity and proven quality will make you more in the long run most likely.
He was sold for ยฃ8m in the end.

No brainer.

I agree on the CL Groups but we were lucky to make them last year Holy saved by a bar and a goalline clearance against the shite of Shakhter.
The Group was a disaster Football wise but the money was great.

We have to find a balance between the two the fans deserve better than simply turning up for the cash.

Deila has created a System to contest on both fronts with equal measure no matter the opposition the mentality remains the same.

Press, Attack at Pace and keep it going for the full 90.

We do need the quality on the end of it though of that there is no doubt as the Guidettis and Griffiths will only get you so far.

We need proven quality at the pointy end.
As you rightly say that costs money.
To make that money you need to aquire your Ki’s,Wanyamas and Van Dijks.
Players you know who are on the up and going to make money.
I think Bitton could well be the next myself especially if he continues to prove it on the European stage.
I think Johansen is a keeper myself Deila gave him his break in Norway change his approach to it.
He owes Deila and is evidently loving it at Celtic.

We were also unlucky against Maribor, alot of fans forget.Forrest hit the bar at CP,which would have took us through.Maybe,it was a God-send,as we weren’t ready. However,I am always looking at the importance of the finance and
prestige,CL football brings.
I agree in general,Charlie, with your thoughtful
piece.A standard has been set, that can be maintained.
Like many, apart from yourself,I couldn’t see where Ronny was going with his 4-2-3-1.It has become apparent, energy and fitness, are required from every player,to make this attack-minded system work.
We all wanted 2 strikers, but if movement is right, any of the front 4 should be able to score.
For CL qualifiers, like yourself,we need that one quality striker.A strong, robust forward, who can be the fulcrum,to bring others up the park and into play.I would hate to think,we don’t get this type of player in the summer. And it costs us 25M in CL riches.
Cheers,Charlie.

Canny disagree with any of that and I also thought Maribor was closer than some suggest.
I love the pressing game bud Barca were the finest exponents of it under Pep G I think they had a set system of getting the ball back in 5 seconds when they lost it.
Of course for this to work the entire team has to respond as one entity and press their man allover the Park this in turn leaves the guy in possession no space or man to pass to and generally ended in the opposition giving it back or kicking it out or back to their keeper.
Teams have started doing this against us and it’s paying divid ends as we push up high and gain the upper hand.

If we secure a quality frontman (I read earlier tonight Guidetti wants to go back to Feynoord)and I mean a proven target man we will be a much tougher team to take on next Season.

Afternoon…
Two main things from this well written piece…
RD’s progress and our “transfer policy.”
First up..RD.
Like another poster on here..I’m still not sold fully on RD.
Where I will give hin full credit is the fitness, stamina and attitude of the players…It’s spot on…and full marks to him for that.
Playing wise,however, I’m still not convinced…
Aberdeen were the better side for almost an hour on Sunday..and McInness is to be congratulated on how he set them up.
As I’ve said, repeatedly,we can be easy to play against and if a Coach, like Mcinness, puts his mind to it…it can cause us problems.
One good thing I took out of it ‘though was… Aberdeen forced us to abandon the slow side-ways passing game…and encouraged us to run at them…What a difference…Hope RD took note and maintains that philosophy.
As for our “transfers”…
Notwithstanding the amazing profits we have made on certain players…we have managed to sign almost an entire team of failures…This has to stop.
I would love someone to tell me if it is indeed PL who “authorises” these signings…or do the Coaches have a say?
Because as the article rightly says…we have been getting more wrong than right recently.(armstrong and GMS notwithstanding.)
Onwards and upwards Celtic.

Cheers Mike though I don’t know what side you have been watching this Season because Deilas Celtic are not slow on the build up and don’t play sideways Football that’s the side he inherited from Lenny.
It has taken several months for the entire team to get what it was he was demanding of them.
Some like Commons failed to grasp the concept which was critical because he of all the players was the one player Lennys side relied on for the spark or creativity.

He’s not missed now in this side as we don’t play everything through the middle or are reliant on his shooting or goals.

Aberdeen are a good side, they approached us the way Celtic have approached every other team this Season.
On the front foot, pressing high and playing on the break at pace.

They like us have a team of players who can do that and it’s no suprise to me they have done so well this Season as a result.
But they unlike us do not have a team who can sustain that for an entire game..week in week out.

That’s the difference.

Our side came off the back of 60 minutes in the San Siro with 10 men there was always going to be a reaction to that by our side.
It took us 40 minutes to get going but when we did Aberdeen did not have an answer and that’s 3 games this Season they have been found wanting against us.

The right replacements and signings in the Summer could well see us kick on further next Season in terms of developing our new style and approach further and I think Deila has an idea who and what type of player he would want coming in to our side.

No more mass signings like under the previous approach as you rightly say it is not cost effective it is a false economy as wages mount up in a big squad.

I can see Deila perhaps heading to Scandinavia for a CB he must be aware of the players out there that can do a job at Celtic.
If we secure a quality proven finisher then I think we can do ourselves more justice in the CL but all of that of course is dependant on who goes and how much we are prepared to Invest?

The Board have tried it one way and whilst the Bank Balance may have swelled the Stands have become less so as the Football on show became turgid and pedestrian at times.

We are heading the right way no two ways about it the Football is quicker, the results are much better and the fans are now buying into the Philosophy of Press and Attack at pace.

We are playing with width now, we are attacking teams for the full game when in possession and we are now reaping the rewards for the hard work they the team have put in.

What’s there not to like about that?

Aberdeen were the better team in the first half on Sunday? So what?
This had nothing to do with Deila, but it did have everything to do with getting back from playing Inter at 3 in the morning.
Did Aberdeen play midweek? No.
Celtic could have scored 6 on Sunday, the truth is Aberdeen aren’t made of granite, they can’t compete with Celtic over a season, Aberdeen are out of both cups, they were at full strength
yet should have lost 6 second half goals!

Celtic need to just keep flying and the trophies will come, this is going to be an historic season, the time for bickering about Deila is past, he is delivering, the team is delivering and we should all get right behind the Bhoys now.

Charlie,
Sorry for delay in replying..I was away watching a CB to replace Big Virgil…:0)..
It’s good that we all have differing opinions and a slant on how we see things.
Your opening paragraph has me totally bemused…
But if that’s what you think…hail hail to you.
The bottom line is…
We’re all Celtic men who only want the best for our Club….and we won’t always see it the same way…
But we’ll still be Celtic men…in it together.

The Champions league is what its all about,
That’s where Celtic and the Supporters want to be,
Its in our blood and our DNA,
The league title is the passport to the prestige and riches of the Champions League .

Superb insights past, present and future although my humble pie Desperate Dan size, is for Collins whom I ripped for hiding at the start of the season when we were poor. His personal ethos regarding fitness may well have tied in with RD’s and we assumed that the players were fit in previous seasons but can see now that they ,some, probably weren’t . Klopp and others in Europe have shown that the game has moved on further so maybe we should also praise Mc Guinness for his input..
Last thing, as Holy Sea said yesterday, stop praising the sheep, Their fans are scum and for me are approaching Sons and Cousins level. 9 would have done me.

Still not convinced, the acid test will be replacing Van Dijk and the CL. While its good that we are still competing for a domestic treble, our Europa campaign was embarassing.

Van Dijk is not irreplaceable though Doc he’s not quite as good as some seem to think I reckon.
The Europa Campaign was always going to be difficult were average last Season in Europe the points tally reflected that.
The changes to Management,Personnel and Injuries we sustained early on were always going to have a negative impact throw in a complete change of approach and System then that too was going always going to take time to bed in.
The Inter Tie was a culmination of us turning that round and had it not been for 2 unusual errors of judgement by Gordon we may well have been in the last 16 of the Europa.
I was certainly not embarrassed by our approach to both games.

I get the feeling you may be one of those that considers the Europa League beneath us at Celtic?
Well this is where we are at as a Club we don’t spend like a Champions League outfit Doc in fact we soend more like a Championship outfit and how many of them would you consider good enough for Europe?

None would be my answer.

Whilst Champions League must always be the goal for the Support and players to make that a reality it must also be the goal for the Board, the balance must be sought between buy to sell and buy to improve.
If we don’t find a balance then expect more “embarrassment” to follow.
