Celtic Diary Saturday December 20: If You Want to Keep The History

Nearly Christmas already. Still, at least the wife doesn’t ask me what I’ve been looking at when I slam the laptop shut if she suddenly enters the room.

Christmas is a time for remembering, and a bit further on , we’ll talk about how one society is remembering and protecting a little bit of history.

But we’ll get the usual shite out of the way  first, and with the festive fixtures about to begin, spare a thought for Aleksandr Tonev-he’ll be away home to Bulgaria for a few days after his appeal against racist behaviour was turned down, and his seven match ban will be enforced.

Now, personally, it matters not a jot if someone is black or white, unless my wife just gave birth to him, and its fairly unlikely that Tonev is racist. He may have said something in the spur of the moment, but theres always a danger that an unhealthy incident is amplified, and perhaps its better he goes away for a while, and maybe has a wee think about things.

Scott Brown, the captain, is right behind the winger;

“He’s been fine. He was a wee bit devastated with the news that he was getting the ban, but when it’s one versus one, what can you say?

“At the end of the day, he’s got the ban and he’ll have to continue training. He’s been fine in training, looking sharp and will be a miss in games.

“Everybody feels for him that he’s going to be out for six matches. It’s hard because he wants to play in games and he was just beginning to get a run.

“Now he’s going to miss out until halfway through January, so it’s a hard one for him to take. He’ll enjoy getting sharper in training.”

 With that out of the way, Brown went on to look forward to tomorrows Tannadice trip;

“The game at our place was the best performance we’ve produced from start to finish.

“We could have scored eight, nine, 10 goals as we created that many chances.

“It will be a different game tomorrow – it’s always more of a battle at Tannadice in the first 15 minutes.

“Jackie [McNamara] and Simon [Donnelly] have got them playing really good football. They get the ball down and try and play.

“I’m not too sure what the pitch is going to be like – hopefully good – as both teams like to play football.

“I think that showed at Celtic Park in the last game.”

I can remember that game. After the match, our CSC met up on the Celtic Way, ready to head for a swiftie before the run back, and to a man we agreed that total football was here, and that great things were ahead.

It hasn’t quite gone as smoothly as that since, and we could spend all day trying to work out why, and we’d all have different answers. But it is getting better, and the game itself could be a christmas cracker !

Paul Paton, the man accused of duffing up Lukasz Zaluska in an alleyway won’t play for United. He’s suspended after being found guilty of spitting at an opponent, even though the opponent says he didn’t, theres no footage of the incident, and he doesn’t even play for Celtic.

Tough shit.

Zaluska probably won’t start, but he deserves a few minutes at the end of the game. Theres no reasoning behind that, but it should liven the crowd up a bit.

There are a couple of players in the Tannadice line up who could cause problems, according to Scott Brown, and he singled out Stuart Armstrong for particular praise.

Not intending to unsettle him in the slightest, of course, brown offered his opinion on whether or not Armstrong would handle playing at Celtic;

‘I don’t see why not. I’ve seen his attributes when he’s been away with Scotland, too, and what he does.

‘He understands that you’ve got to show some respect but when he goes on the park he wants to win games as well. I love that about players. He works hard and wants to win games. You get disappointed if you don’t. He’s one of those lads.

‘It’s not really up to me who we sign but there are some great Scottish players out there. We signed Leigh (Griffiths) and Charlie (Mulgrew), while James (Forrest) has come through the youths as well. We are bringing in Scottish players as well.’

‘He works hard and always wants the ball. That’s the main thing. Especially in Scotland, people can go hiding and don’t want it and don’t want to play in the big games.

‘He’s a big-game player and he always seems to do really well against us. He’s aggressive, strong and is direct as well. That’s what I like about him.’

Many , many years ago, I watched a young Scott Brown go toe to toe with Neil Lennon at Easter Road. It was like watching father and son. Brown was a little wilder at the time, perhaps a little too raw, but you could see a lot of similar traits between the two.

I’m not kidding when I had a clear vision that Brown would one day replace the Irishman, as long as he had Lennon as a mentor.  Maybe Brown sees the same thing in Armstrong…

Want some gossip ?

Magnus Eikrem. Free at the point of asking.

The Norwegian has just had his contract terminated at Cardiff, where he hasn’t featured at all under the current manager, and his career stalled.  A loan deal so we could have a look at him would be a good idea.

Now, have you had to do this secret Santa shiute at work ? Its where you spend a tenner on a gift for a colleague whose name comes out of a hat, and where someone buys you something on a similar basis.

Instead of blowing a tenner on that, have a look at this instead.

I’ve no idea why its come up as the letter m, but click on it anyway.

Its the merchandising page of the Celtic Graves Society, who do sterling work restoring and preserving the graves of Celtic legends, some of which had fallen into decline. Well, if you know anything about history, you’ll know it needs to be preserved.

The Celtic Graves Society was formed by a group of Celtic fans after a poster on Kerrydale Street (I think it was a poster called Maleys Spirit?) had tracked down the grave of Willie Maley. It was in a state of disrepair. This then begged the question that if the great man Willie Maleys grave was in a state of disrepair, then of how many other Celtic Legends are in a state of disrepair? So a group of like minded fans got together in a Glasgow pub and formed the Society.
We are a Society formed by fans with the aim to repair and mark , if required, the resting places of old Celtic heroes. We are also trying to keep the memories alive of these great men for the future generations of Celtic fans and give them their rightful place in that they deserve in Celtics History. We are honored to have Jim Craig the Lisbon Lion as our patron and also delighted to have the support of the Club itself. We are also very lucky that we can call on many Celtic Historians who help us in our research and commemorations.
In 2015 we are looking at various projects, which we will be sitting down shortly to discuss. The Celtic Support have been wonderful in their support of the Celtic Graves Society and we look forward to this continuing. Without the support of the Celtic Support we could not fulfill the aims that we have as a society.

A look at their website shows an astonishing amount of work already done or in progress, and like all families, its great to have somewhere to go to to pay tribute to those who walked before us.
On Saturday, November 2nd 2013 at 11.30am, The Celtic Graves Society held a ceremony to unveil a Celtic Cross in memory of the Founding Fathers of Celtic Football Club at St Peter’s Cemetery, Dalbeth. Despite the very poor weather, a large turnout gathered.
Its the kind of thing that actually does make us more than a club.
We’ll keep you informed of their projects.
Buckie v Nairn yesterday, with santa claus in the background. And we’re back to the Christmas theme…
Twas the night before christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Thats why this year I’ve installed a carbon monoxide detector.
 Lisbon Lion went on a bit of a spree last night, posting some excellent pictures on twitter. This was one of them;

Aye, was at that game, Dalglish scored with a penalty, Aberdeen got a severely dodgy goal, Drew Jarvie being offside and then Davie Robb fired home a screamer from about a yard, to make things worse, this victory for MacLeod’s Aberdeen convinced the SFA to put him in charge of Scotland……doh!

Tonev found guilty although no tv or collaborating evidence.
Paton found guilty even though there’s no evidence and the other player states that it never happened.
Kris Boyd found not guilty even though the headbut is caught on camera.
And still the scum will insist the SFA / SPL have it in for them

Eikrem ? As long as he is not like the dud Berget we got from Cardiff.
Armstrong ? Good player, but not worth the 2M price quoted.
Only the Messi McLeod at Sevco is worth that. lol
I would swap Scepovic for United’s Ciftci.If that fails,offer
them Pukki,Balde and Boerrigter for Armstrong and Ciftci. You can only try and get rid of these duds.
Great work by the Graves Society,a labour of love on their
part.Hail Hail

It wasn’t the system to blame, it was the players to blame.
Can’t defend and can’t take chances.
I though Celtic played well and on another day, would have won comfortably.
With different officials we’d have drawn at least.

Sorry Andy,can’t agree m8.
Biton was a passenger, until he was hooked.Strikers finish off
chances, not makeshift supplementary ‘striker ‘ ie Johansen.
Broony trying to do the work of 2 men, with this ‘system ‘.

Biton has been outstanding the last few games. Gudetti has been a passenger the last 3 – he should have been taken off much earlier. we replaced Guidetti & Stokes with Scepovic & Griffiths – 2 strikers for 2 strikers!!
Nothing to do with the system (we had 63% possession & 18 shots, more than enough to win the game), we lost because individual players made mistakes(aided by some poor refereeing decisions).
Drop Guidetti to the bench & give Scepovic a run in the team. I would also prefer Griffiths to Stokes.

Wrong, the system changed to two central strikers, in fact it was more like 3 4 3.

Absolute nonsense – we should have won the match comfortably – the system wasn’t to blame, the players were. Look at the stats for the game – we were the dominant team and created the most and better chances. We were undone due to 2 dreadful defensive errors – Effe completely miskicks and then dives in to the tackle – 2nd goal Forest switched off and left Armstrong all on his own for the header. Add to that some woeful finishing and an assistant ref who got Scepovic’s goal completely wrong and we ended up losing a game that we should have won quite comfortably.
Maybe I’m watching a different game from the others on this site, but I reckon too many have an agenda with Diela and will never be happy.
Systems don’t win games, players do.

Play to the players strengths, that’s what our greatest manager did.
This system is bollocks and so predictable. If you have the quality of player to play in this way fair enough, unfortunately we don’t. It is fucking dreadful to watch. As soon as we went with a proper striking pairing we looked to have them rattled.

Andy Docherty spot on usual suspects talking pish as per usual.
I reckon half you clowns would be happy to see Deila fail myself.

Dominated Possession
Created way more chances
Hit the woodwork 3 times
Had good goal chopped off
A decent Penalty shout ignored.

That’s the facts stop talking pish.

4 strikers had a go today 2 scored 2 didn’t.
Commons had a go ..did fuck all.

Charlie,
You need to have a look at yourself.Calling your fellow fans clowns and that we talk pish. Why the virtriol ? Because we dare have a different opinion to you ?Healthy debate is good but
you take it too far and resort to filth.Like many I am worried,
that having one central striker is not working. Why ? Facts show,
we are not scoring enough goals.Johansen is no Frank Lampard
This result was always coming in the league.Hopefully,it’s a wake up call.Nobody wants to see our club fail,Charlie.
Therefore,likewise,we wish Deila every success.
So,you are out of order with that comment, and the language you are using to fellow Tims. You are acting like a Hun.
A Merry Christmas to you, sir, when it comes !!

You need to take your head out of the sand Charlie and look at the reality of what we are watching. Same story every week. As for possession? never has won games of football, as for chances? as the old saying goes, a miss is as good as a mile.
Yes, we probably deserved a draw out of the game, but for long spells in the game we were shit and if you don’t accept that then you are deluded.

My previous post vanished into cyberspace, so here goes again.
Many of us aren’t anti-Deila, we just remember Mowbray.
We haven’t improved at all and can easily be handled by Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, even Hamilton.
Our defence is getting worse.
We can’t score goals.
Our “system” is responsible.
Guidetti needs a rest.
Griffiths should start. Why? He can score goals.
4-4-2. Boring but effective.
Deila needs to address poor refereeing. This is Scotland after all and we are Fenian bastards. He needs to speak out to defend our team.
We are so fit we are puffed. what good does that do? We can’t finish matches with a full tank.
It is possible we won’t win the League.Unthinkable.
On the basis of our recent rubbish, we won’t beat Sevco. Thanks, Ronny.
So, although we’re in all these groovy competitions, it is also possible/probable/likely we won’t win any of them.
How can a team with the same players be so much worse than last year’s team? It may be part of Deila’s learning curve but our team doesn’t exist to support Ronny’s football education.
I have never seen any Celtic team create so many chances and do nothing with them.Players should be allowed to play and figure it out for themselves. This is tedious. I hope some of you bhoys are right and I am wrong but so far, you haven’t convinced many of us.

Now,Swally? He’d ducked, dived, dodged, cosied up to all of them in turn. Mainly, by being so overpaid, his salary meant many of Rangers loyal staff (probably underpaid like our own) had to get their jotters before he finally did.
Because he “didn’t do walking”, many others had to.Justice has been served.
