Celtic Diary Wednesday November 26: Guess Who’s Back….

Its John Collins !

The assistant manager hasn’t said much of late publicly, but he made up for lost time yesterday.

Celtic will struggle to sign players in January if they don’t qualify from Europa League group, admits John Collins

Er, thanks for that, John. Except thats not what he said. The headline is from the Daily Mail, and this quote from the Evening Times. Thats because in the text of the Mail article, Collins doesn’t say anything about players coming in.

He said: “It is vitally important that we qualify. If we are looking for players in January and next summer, they will want to play in Europe.

“Good players want to be involved in the Champions League and Europa League. They don’t just want to play domestic football. So it is really important that we qualify.

“Is it our biggest selling point? Yeah, it’s very difficult to get top players if you are not in Europe.”

More a statement of the obvious than anything else.

Looking ahead to tomorrows game, Collins continued;

“Salzburg are a good team. They play some high tempo football and love to press.

“They are probably one of the best – if not the best – pressing team in Europe.

“They don’t give you a second on the ball and are always looking to pass forward It will be a new challenge for us.

“It’s something we don’t get in Scotland. Most teams sit off us here, so it is the exact opposite.”

Actually, they don’t. Most teams think they have a shot against us now, so they tend to have a go.

‘If you dwell on the ball against teams like that they’ll take it off you in dangerous positions.

‘It should be a great game for us and that’s what we want — to learn and develop and keep stretching ourselves. We know we’re going to have to have a top performance to get a result. An average performance won’t get a result.’

This urgency to get rid of the ball, and not dwell on it should really be combined with the concept of looking up to see where you are passing it to. Something which has eluded a number of players on a number of occasions this season.

Anyone who has seen Celtic this season will have done so through their fingers when it comes to some of the passing. Its been reckless. Too many passes have gone astray, and worse, too many have put the recipient in a no win situation where he either cannot reach the ball, or will be booked for trying to.

Instead of screaming at his charges to pass, maybe they should be working on awareness. Aware of where their team mates are, and where the opposition is.

 Collins also played down rumours of taking the Scotland Develpment job, with Dutchman Mark Wotte, who was mutually consented by the SFA, backing him for the job;

“It’s nice of Mark Wotte to say that but I’m the Celtic assistant manager,” he said. “I’m very, very happy here and it wouldn’t interest me at this stage.

Oh, well.

 Jason Denaayer, who picked up an ankle knock at the weekend, should be okay to play tonight, and he’s somewhat more optimistic about Celtics prospects in the Europa League than say, someone who had watched the games;

 Posing for this picture to promote the game, he said;

“I didn’t touch the trophy – it is a superstition. Everybody told me ‘don’t touch the trophy, that is bad luck’.

“So I didn’t touch it. I wanted to but I couldn’t. Nobody did.

“It is not impossible for us to win it but we will need to play well, 100 per cent every game because there are some very good teams in it and in the next round some more very good teams will drop down from the Champions League.

“When you play Europa League you know it is going to be difficult but you just need to keep playing and not think about it. When you think about it too much you can get your head down. Even if a match is going to be difficult you have to prepare the same way.”

Denaayer also spoke of Red Bulls forwards, Massimo Bruno and the feared Jonathan Soriano;

“I know him ( Bruno ) from the Belgium international set-up. I have played two games with him with the Under-21s but he is a very good player.

“He is an excellent dribbler and very fast so if you are playing against him you have to be very careful. He didn’t play in Salzburg, he was on the bench.

“We haven’t spoken yet but I will send him some text messages just to say good luck.

“Soriano is a player with a lot of experience and is different from the other attackers.

“He isn’t really fast or really strong but he is very intelligent.

“He is the player we need to be most concerned with because he can change the game like this. With every pass, every attack.

“Before the game, the defenders have to be aware of him because he is their most important player.”

Denaayer does seem to be able to step up a level when he needs to. Virgil van Dijk, when he’s concentrating fully, also has that capability. We just need Emilio Izaguerre and Adam Matthews-likely to start in place of Mikael Lustig-to remember they are defenders first and foremost.

From a supporters point of view, tomorrow is perhaps the first chance we have to fill the ground, to bring back the thunder, and to paraphrase a reply from Doc to yesterdays Diary, make sure that Celtic Park on european nights isn’t just something for people to add to their bucket list.

The interweb came alive with stories that John Guidetti is happy with what Celtic can offer, and will sign up permanently. If this is the case, it should be announced before the game. Although the Swede cannot feature, it will prove a timely boost for the fans, and show that perhaps Celtic do have plans to build a team which can approach the UCL next year, if not with confidence, but at least with optimism.

 Kris Commons is also pondering over a new offer, and Leicester City, according to the Express, are ready to swoop if he declines;

EXCLUSIVE: Leicester City hunt Celtic star Kris Commons

An exclusive in the Express usually means that all the other papers think its too ridiculous to run with.

But the Foxes will have to push their way in front of Bolton boss Neil Lennon, who is set to table a £350,000 bid in January.

Commons, 31, is no closer to agreeing a new deal at Celtic.

That has alerted newly-promoted sides Leicester and Crystal Palace, who are also interested in the playmaker.

Lennon has already confirmed his interest and he is keen to team up with Commons at the Macron Stadium.

Lennon has a close bond with the player. He took him to Celtic from Derby for £300,000 in 2011, and is confident he can fight off competition from English Premier League clubs.

If Commons is to go, Bolton would be the most likely destination, where he can link up with his old boss, and probably his bestest buddy Gary Hooper, who is so far out of contention at Norwich these days that they wouldn’t even sell him a season book.

And Anthony Stokes. And Adam Matthews. And anyone else you can think of before the MSM come up with it.

Celtics reserves forced a credible 1-1 draw in Liverpool last night against Evertons equivalent.

From the Everton website;

Backed by over 100 audible fans, the visitors showed no fear and arguably deserved their first-half lead despite a lack of chances from either side.

Russell Griffiths was untroubled by on-target efforts from McMullan and O’Connell in the opening 10 minutes, but he could do nothing about the opener midway through the half.

McMullan’s corner found its way to Thomson, but his shot was blocked and Twardzik flicked in from close range.

Everton would have had more fans at the game, but as is customary in Liverpool before major events the police dropped job advertisements from helicopters to keep the crowds down.

Away from Celtic for a moment, and Stewart Regan , the beleagured ( it does mean “clueless” , doesn’t it ? ) SFA chief has gone public on his fears for cash strapped Second Rangers, who have freely admitted they need more money to fulfill their seasons obligations.

“Well obviously it is concerning for the Scottish game,” Regan said.

Perhaps what he means is that the Scottish game should be concerned that he’s doing nothing about it.

“We would all like to see Rangers improve their financial position in order to bring money to the game of football in Scotland.

When he says all, he actually means “all at the SFA “

“Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow but for Scotland generally.

Impact. Its what asteroids do.

“In that regard I know the fans are desperate to see success again. They are desperate for stability.

Aw. Bless them. He stops short here of saying he will do everything he can to help them, but we get the message.

“They’ve had a number of years of ups and downs now and I think they are hopeful they will get some certainty and stability in the future.”

Ups and downs ? How much further down can you go than liquidation ? How much lowerr can a club go than fleecing the fans who support them ? How much lower can they go than the mess their second, asset stripping entity has gone ?

They could all join the SFA, I suppose.

Regan is an idiot. Backed only by those who wish the whole Rangers /Sevco scandal would go away. Neil Doncaster is an idiot as well. Backed only by etc, etc.

Theres no sponsor for the league. There won’t be either. They are clearly not looking for one. Not until some incarnation of the Ibrox franchise finally stumbles  into the top level.

Then they can justify their complete lack of ability by saying no-one would sponsor football in Scotland without the their beloved in the top league.

Its about the only way they can try to justify not being sacked for gross incompetence.

But, like the guy who has “Not Dead, Just Sleeping ” on his tombstone, they are not fooling anyone.

St. Anthony on twitter provided the picture yesterday. It was Recreation Park , Alloa , in 1982, and not , in fact, Love Street 1986.

Surprisingly.

Tell you what. A wee change today.

2 massive games coming up.At least Guidetti will be back for the jam farts.I can see us being too strong for Hertz.
Salzburg ? A draw,with an Astra draw,we will qualify.
Not going,first European games,that I have missed,for many
moonbeams.
Why ? Like many Celtic fans, still pissed off, that we did not get past a poor poor Maribor team.Champions League football HAS
to be a MUST every season for Prestige and Finance.I am no
glory hunter,40 years everywhere with the Hoops,30 years a season-ticket holder. My friends even went over to Roumania for the Astra game, but won’t go on Thursday.
Until Lawwell and the board(Desmond) get the message,a better standard of player is required, then Celtic Park will remain half-full.If we are in Europa’s next season, then the Main Stand will be the only part of the ground, that will be open.Alas !

I,reluctantly, have still been going (my grandson’s chucked it ‘though)..but if things don’t improve big time…I won’t re-new next season.
As for article…If Denayer is playing tonight, will he be OK for the morra night as well?..:0)..Couldnae resist it.
On the “passing” theme, which I’ve been criticising for months, did you see Bayern last night?
I thought we passed the ball too much…but Gee Zuss..they are unbelievable…and not in a good way. So many were under-hit and far too casual..and it cost them the game.
I wish somebody at Celtic would pay attention…

I saw Bayern last night lose two of the worst defensive mistake goals to lose a game they were controlling with 10 men. Don’t think we want to go there absolute complacency set in . Stay tight tomorrow night and hit them on the break. A 0-0 is a good result and keeps us in it. If we get the break through concentrate and shut up shop. Result is King.

Mike,
I will always renew, beats shopping with the wife !
I accepted the bad times, when we did not have the finance.
The days when a now defunt club, cheated and borrowed to buy success. But now,we are in rude financial health.Who has
money in flops we have purchased ?
The name Boerrigter, makes me angry.3M FFS ! Is Park
responsible ? Is this why we are going down the loan route ?
Experienced players are NEEDED to develop younh players like Henderson,Thomson and McGregor.
Deila should have had a team ready for CL qualifiers. The board failed him.Even though Maribor was his disaster.
Will we be ready for qualifiers next season ?
Finance from CL groups is MASSIVE.Everything should be done from top to bottom at our club,to make sure we are ALWAYS ready, for our most important games of the season.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  holy sea

Totally agree on the the Parks thing Holy he’s been responsible for as many ringers as he has decent finds.
I think the loan route is the safest bet for us nowadays look at the Forster and now Guidetti deals as compared to laying out hard cash on dumplings like Bangura,Boerrigter,Balde and Pukki?
How much for that little lot eh?Look at the loans we have had that thankfully were loans..Miku Lassad Tonev Berget none of whom have made any impact whatsoever at Celtic.
Try before you buy and like Guidetti and Forster sort the price out before you do.
It’s a win win as far as I can see.
On the Youth I went to Goodison last night to watch them and to be honest Fasan O’Connell Lindsay and Twardzik looked like the only ones anywhere near ready for a call up to the first team.
The rest looked like youth players.
The Everton players were poor which was also a shock.
We have not been ready for Champions League Qualification for 2 years bud.
They sold the spine of the team off last year during the qualification which very nearly ended up going tits up.
A crossbar and a goal line clearance at Celtic Park away from being dumped by the Kazakhstan Rangers.
ie a Long ball team with no Plan B.
We scraped by and were rightfully bottom of our Group by the end of it.
We failed to invest from a position of Strength this has always been our weakness at Celtic we simply will not speculate to accumulate at the higher Level.
Instead we brought numbers in HOPING one or two would come good.
So far Virgil has.
We all know he will be punted soon.

Hardly an inspiring approach is it?
We sign Guidetti in Jan on a Contract I guarantee it is not because the Board want to Build a team round him…It’s because they know there is massive profit to be had 12-18 months down the line as the vultures come in.

Went to Goodison last night too. I thought we were ‘solid’ but unremarkable, cruised the first hour.
Possibly lost a bit of momentum when Paul George went off, he was always available which meant we cycled the ball better when he was there.
You didn’t go topless did ye? 🙂 Nutters 🙂
Walking up to the ground chatting to an Everton fan he said he was excited about the youth at Everton…….they must have another youth team somewhere.

Lol he was good value that guy I was Ufking freezing with a fleece jacket on hehe.
I thought Paul George was very guilty of trynig to play the wonder pass at every attempt myself and he left wee McMullan isolated for most of the game.
Christ he put some shift in that kid no?
Twardzik and Findlay done well I thought and the nhot Tierney made a difference too when he came on.
Not afraid to take people on and very direct.
Last 20 we tired and the 2 subs they brought on mad a difference I thought.

I thought we played most things through PG and lost the plot a bit when he went off (why an hour? has he been injured again and coming back?)
I thought our keeper was slow of thought and crap on the left peg, not great if he’s 3rd choice. Agreed McMullen really grafted, ran himself to a standstill.
It showed that 5-6 of our side have had extended runs in the 1st team, head and shoulders above anything in blue last night.
Should have been out of sight in the 1st half really.
Tierney certainly has the posture of a player.

Charlie,I agree.
A fundemental change in transfer policy is required. As you
know my main gripe is,we can’t afford to miss out,on the ever increasing CL riches.
This season,I feel the board will have had a wake-up call, due to fan apathy, and not qualifying for CL being a major factor.
But,Charlie we should always be in CL groups, even if it doesn’t go well.Look at Ajax,2 points after 5 games, very poor. However,
do you think, they will not want to be in CL groups next season ? Not a chance !

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  holy sea

I hope we do make the Groups every Season Holy but the reality is our Board are only willing to fund a side capable of dominating the Domestic League which as we all know is more than a few rungs below the CL Groups on the quality Ladder.
Dutch Football is not great but it is slightly better than ours you could argue.
We need to find a balance between SPFL and CL bud ,we need to take a gamble on a Finnbogason instead of hedging our bets on mediocrity like Pukki Balde Griffiths Berget Boerrigter.
We could have had that guy for £6m when we enquired he was on a reported £12.5k a week at Heerenven.
Had we gambled?
I think we would have had the presence up top to bother most sides in qualification myself.
Stick with the current plan but also buy in some Proven quality at a decent level to bolster the side and add an extra cutting edge which until Guidetti appeared we have sadly lacked since Hooper left.

First and foremost…we need to win at all cost in the Europa game, the 12th man does help at paradise but in my opinion when a club dear to your heart keeps breaking it then what did they expect, we are not all gullible and yes we had our dark hours a few years back but we created a business model in which they have changed by buying inferior players in which to compete, wake up PL revert back to the original model.

when did Celtic become regular competitors in the CL?
The posters on here seem to believe that we were always in the CL until recently when PL started signing inferior players.
Strangely enough, our participation in the CL have all been under PL’s watch.
As for being knocked out in the qualifying rounds, MON, Strachan & Lennon all managed that, if my memory serves me well.
And as for the Ajax comparison – which big players have they bought? How many of their star players have they sold?
I really don’t get the PL bashing – as far as I’m concerned, he’s earned every penny of his bonus. I don’t recall him getting the blame when MON, Strachan or Lennon failed to get us into the groups.

When teams like Maribor and Ludogrets can qualify for CL groups, with players costing 300k,then we should ALWAYS be at the big party !

The fact remains that the money we spend on players does not guarantee entry into the group stages.
We are in a time where there is no money in Scottish football. If we didn’t have the CL money the last couple of seasons we would be financially stricken.
Any money we do have needs to ensure we can operate in the next couple of years in the event that we don’t get CL football.
That’s why we had to downsize.
Are you lot living in a different world from me where money is plentiful? Where the SPL is sponsored and the cup competitions have big sponsors (I don’t even know who is sponsoring the 2 cups).
I don’t understand why you don’t understand the financial plight that has affected Scottish football. Spending money will not guarantee CL success, otherwise every other team with dreams of progressing would do the same.
Lawell has done a great job in ensuring we have a well run club. That’s why he is entitled to be compensated accordingly.
p.s. I have no idea what his salary is or how it compares to otherrs’.
Do you honestly believe that a £7 million striker would guarantee CL group stages?
I reckon we’d also need a couple of decent midfielders and a couple of defenders. So we’re looking at an outlay of possibly £25 million (and the wages that go with that) in order to give ourselves a fighting chance in the CL (that outlay wouldn’t even guarantee success).
So we make the group stages, do you think the team would compete or just make up the numbers?
Do you really think we’d make a serious attempt at winning the CL or just turn up and collect a cheque at the end of it?
Real Madrid, after winning the CL spent £110 million on 2 players and got Hernandez from Man Utd on loan.
Time to join the real world and start supporting the team.

andybhoy

Reply to  holy sea

Nobody is asking to spend money. What we are asking is that the people who run the club, run it properly and not have the football wing prop up bonuses and shareholders payments.
What I don’t understand, is the apologists for the board saying ‘this is where we, are unfortunately there is no money in Scottish football blah blah blah.
If they continue on this course, they themselves will kill the club and if you can’t see that then you are blind.

Andy,
You really are in a lost world m8….
Nobody is advocating spending big money. It’s more about spending wisely.Look at the dross,we had to send out on loan.
Did Maribor,Ludogrets or even Ajax spend big ? NO
Are they in the Champions League groups ? YES
Therefore,if they can do it,why can’t we ??
Also,it’s worth picking up the cheques,in order for this extra finance to be used to build a team.
