Celtic Diary Friday September 26: Here We Go To Two In A Row!

Celtic face St. Mirren in Paisley tomorrow lunchtime, thus avoiding the embarassment of any of the players grabbing a pie to keep them going until tea-time.

Its a great opportunity for manager Ronny Deila to equal his best winning run as a Celtic manager, having previously only reached the giddy heights of two successive wins ( against full time teams ) with the wins over St. Johnstone and Dundee Utd.

Like a steam train, Deila has decided to start slowly with the aim of becoming unstoppable when he gathers speed.

“We want some momentum now. We want to win as many games in a row as possible.

“The team are capable of winning 10 games in a row, or something like that, but I’m not saying we are definitely going to do it right now.

“What I will say is we are definitely going to win the league. The goal is the Treble.

“In the cups everything can happen but we have to set high demands and high goals for ourselves. We will see in the end how that goes.

“I felt comfortable on Wednesday against Hearts. I felt like that was how I want to see my team play.

“Of course there is still more progress we can make but the structure is better defensively and we know it is going to be hard for other teams to beat us.

“Also, I like the atmosphere in our dressing room. It’s been like that since I’ve been here. Some of the boys have been here many years and are good boys who want good results.

“The new signings have only been here three weeks – maybe only two if you take the international break into account – so we need to breathe a bit and let them settle in.

“There are good relationships forming between the players. That has been the case with the strikers for a long time, where Stokesy and Kris have a good understanding.

“Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown have a good relationship and against Hearts Stokesy and Emilio were starting to get something together.

“But relationships between two players are one thing. When we get good relationships with sets of three players things will become really good. That takes time and a different style from what they are used to but we’re working on it every day.”

I’ve read that two or three times now,  once in astonishment, once in disbelief, and finally once in abject terror.

Whilst I can hardly claim to be Deilas greatest supporter, I can claim to be a fairly loyal-if a little fickle at times, but at least blatantly fickle, supporter.

He’s talking about players forming good relationships now-despite the fact they have played together for years in one case.

He’s talking about winning ten games in a row. Like its some kind of achievement.

He says the way his team played against Hearts made him comfortable. That scares me. It absolutely petrifies me.

Sure, we beat Hearts, but a better side would have made more of a game of it.

Oh no, he’s not finished yet….

“Psychology is important in football. We hadn’t kept a clean sheet for a while so that was important.

“The team’s defence was good and the front players worked hard as a unit. The structure of our side was good and that’s why we had a lot of counter-attacks and chances.

“There is a better balance in the team now but everything takes time.

“You can see what we are after – quick reactions in defence, 11 players to work together and be compact, with high pressure.

“That will make us fitter and stronger. We will have the ball more. We also have to develop a pattern of play so we can open up defences, like we did in the first half against Hearts.”

He is watching a different game from us. Weren’t Hearts all over us until we scored ?

Deila says he is confident of winning the league. But then, he says a lot of things.

Someone who perhaps has a greater grip on reality, but not by much, is Ally McCoist, currently helping the second incarnation of Rangers shed as much money as possible in the shortest time available.

He was apparently happy that his side avoided Celtic in the League Cup, on account of the hiding they would have taken, according to some, but more likely due to the prospect of his support disgracing themselves again;

‘We certainly weren’t pining for an Old Firm game although we would have taken whoever the cup draw gave us,’ said McCoist.

‘It’s going to be a tough game against St Johnstone. But it’s one which can hopefully be put on the back burner a little bit.

‘We’ll certainly be doing that because we’ve got some tough league games to concentrate on before we concentrate our thoughts on the League Cup again.

‘We said if we could get a home tie we would take it and we’ve got that against a side which, on its day, is capable of giving anybody a game.

‘St Johnstone are a really solid, hard-working team, who ended up winning the Scottish Cup quite comfortably last season.

‘As much as we’re pleased with the draw, we’re certainly not underestimating the task ahead of us.’

McCoist (left) is enjoying the cup run but his priority is getting Rangers promoted to the Scottish Premiership

A shortage of pies at their last game against Falkirk reduced the great man to eating a couple of his fingers, while his assistant Kenny MacDowell desperately tried to suppress an outbreak of intestinal gas.

Barry Ferguson, who played with the original Rangers, now defunct, has his own views on the subject of a clash between Celtic and Second Rangers;

Personally, it can’t come quickly enough because it’s been badly missed and that has been the feeling of many Celtic fans in the past two years. But I’m not so sure they’re as eager for a crack at Rangers now.

Perpetuating the same club myth, Ferguson is one of many who claim the now historical fixture was the highlight of the season. A theory rejected by the police, ambulance workers, hospital staff and anyone else who had to witness the carnage away from the ground , especially if the Ibrox club lost.

He’s right though, we’re not eager for a crack at the new club. Thats because its followed virtually solely now by the more rabid section of their support, most of the decent ones have realised its a different club, and now simply a vehicle for stripping as much cash as possible from the memory of the old one.

Ferguson works for a national newspaper, the Record, and in keeping with recent Record scoops such as ” The Vow ” , when English politicians promised not to take the piss out of Scots if there was a “no” vote in the independence referendum, before promptly taking the piss out of Scots, Ferguson continued to spout his nonsense, which clearly received no editorial checks for accuracy;

But there is no doubt the gap is closing. In fact I believe the squads are pretty evenly matched in terms of quality. But regardless of that I don’t think you can ever say one is 10 years ahead of the other.

The thing about the Old Firm is that superiority goes in cycles. That’s always been the case and it probably always will be.

They simply don’t get so far ahead that the other one can’t quickly catch up.

 They do when one of them has ceased to exist. As the paper itself reported;

rip rangers

If the Record  was a tv show, it would be cancelled before the second series, so frequent are the continuity errors.

All of a sudden the MSM want another “old firm ” game, which in their minds mean the circle is complete, and everything has returned to normal.

Thankfully, the venture capitalists still have to have their final say.

Wim Jansen, who gave us the day we stopped the ten, was pictured yesterday in the Diary getting married.

He does look a wee bit different from his days at Celtic doesn’t he. Especially in that dress.

Can anyone see a familiar face in this picture ?

Dr Who?

I fail to see whats wrong in Ronnies statement.
He’s already said he wants play to be in different areas than we played in last season, small 3 man triangles into channels and wide balls into the centre. Therefore players need to learn a new style of play. Which takes time and patience and buy-in from players and fans.

Anyone clamouring for a return to players paying like last year should remember the moans and the cup exits. We’re aiming for a longer higher target than just winning the league and no more.

Time to think Big Picture Ralph…stop looking at single pixels.

One for you Ralph

Asked if this was the toughest job of his career, MANAGER said: “At this moment, it may be.

“But we have to see in a year, not in a week when we have injuries.

“As a manager, you know already in advance that it’s a big challenge.

“This club is in transition, we don’t know in advance when the difficult moments will be.

“We should have won last weekend and, if we had, we would be two points off second place. Because of the loss, you are questioning me.”

Brilliant, I’ve been saying this for weeks.

Hoops fans crying about not spending money. United have spent over £100M, and have one of the best managers in the world. They still get humped by MK Dons and Leicester.

Building a new team with new ideas takes time so a lot of people need to shut up and get back to supporting the team rather than gurning.

Hail hail.

So ronny says we will win the league and he’s aiming for the treble and gets slaughtered for it. Name one fan who doesn’t think the same.

Any one who has seen the way we performed this season would be worried about winning the league no mind the treble,I think the manager is putting the cart before the horse when talking to the press, get things right on the training ground and on the pitch and get results before talking about trebles.

For good relationships between two to three players read “understanding” there is some loss in translation when the story is written, in my opinion.
I remember the triangular play when Jock Stein was in charge. Ronny is trying to achieve this type of play. I liked the way they played against Hearts although I think the defence could be better protected at times.
It’s the spine you need to win those away games which have suddenly become more dangerous because other teams are losing their fear. Once we crack that we should be okay but I don’t expect too much in Europe this season although I’ll be glad to eat my words.

Starting Guidetti in the last two matches in front of Scepovic baffles me. With Guidetti being ineligible for the Europa League, Scepovic should be the main striker for now and be given maximum game time to get bedded into the team. I appreciate that some may rate Guidetti higher than Scepovic but for the moment, that is besides the point.
I wish RD all the best and sincerely hope he succeeds but based on what I’ve seen up till now, that seems unlikely. I think he’s out of his depth. Clueless even.

Ralph,I’m with you v Des.
The Tinkerman seems to be playing mind games, with himself.
Relationships ? The only relationship/partnership we want to see,is 2 strikers up front ?
And Des,you play we triangles at training.Putting crosses into the box, like Izzy did,for 2 strikers attacking the ball,is the only picture I want to see.Starting tomorrow.Deila is no footbal guru,

he is not going to revolutionise the way football is played.
Get a grip,Des,ffs.

Why the agenda against the manager?
When we win he still gets slated.
Well, I am chucking ETIMS in…used to be a a good read-something I looked forward to…seems now to only be an excuse to find fault in Ronny.
Wish everyone here all the best but I have had enough.

Marko,
Dry your eyes,ya big girl’s blouse.Ralph calls it as he sees it.
No agenda. In his opinion,an honest appraisal,of how he
views, our new coach.I am of the same opinion. So are others on here, but Charlie Saiz, and others, like Des,don’t agree with the doubters viewpoint. But,we respect both sides opinions. We don’t fling the toys out of the pram like you,and say I am no
playing anymore,ffs.
We all want the best for Celtic. And,yes,Deila could turn this difficult start he has had, into a posiitive.God,it could even be the makings of him.
So Man Up,get a bit of humour in your life, and enjoy Ralph’s excellent blogs.Hit back.with your own opinions. That’s what makes a fan’s forum,a medium for debate.

Dyed heid sixty seven must be suicidal with all his negy thoughts. The last two games have had nice movement, but with a lack of a cutting edge. Delilah was slaughtered for the Motherwell game, but they created far more chances. We seem to lack a Gary Hooper type of player to convert these. Onwards and upwards with your usually excellent thoughts

Watching the golf.
Why is it,when a person lands on scottish soil, they don’t want to admit their a Celtic fan.Like el capitano McGinley, the other day, saying he is a West Ham fan ? Fear ?
Yet,Keegan Bradley goes out of his way,to say he is a big Celtic fan.Strange or what ?
Next,Ralph will be telling us,he is in fact a Stoke fan.Or worse,a Deila fan.The mind boggles,just like Ronnies !!

Time to face up to the facts here, Ronny has to go for the following reasons

1. What’s with this trying to make us play a quicker, passing, more technical game. This Muppet has spent too long studying the success of teams who punch above their weight in Europe consistently like Porto, Benfica, Ajax etc. Need someone in there that’s happy to just stick to a 4-4-2 and be happy winning leagues in Scotland.

2. Someone has to put a stop to him giving the youngsters a chance. This bringing in kids when you’ve got established professionals from countries like Holland is just naive. What’s even worse is that when they play well he keeps them in the team.

3. Doesn’t he know that substitutions shouldn’t be made till the last 5 minutes. Time and time again I’ve witnessed this guy change things around not long after half time if things weren’t going well, what an arse.

4. Stop showing interest in the game while it’s going on Ronny!! Embarrassing the way he’s standing in the technical areas observing and giving instructions to the players, just sit on your arse in the digout with your arms folded like all the greats do.

5. Needs to cut out that Barcelona quick and close triangle play in order to make space and pull defenders out of position. What good did it do them last year eh? Get back to the square ball across the midfield and allow the opposition time to get organized..do you even have coaching badges Ronny?

Maybe Ronny would have been better off if he had picked own assistant as Jc has too big an ego to be one and the demise of Ronny may hand him the job , hopefully not though.

This is turning into a Ronny YES/NO tim-a-rendum(copyright me)

Still gives off the enthusiastic PE teacher vibe rather than man that runs Celtic aura. But he’s here for the season so might as well get behind him, could be a long one.

Tomorrow, why not go all out attack.Good to see Wakaso back.Surely,he’s got to come in for McGregor.Defence will be the same, due to injuries.I would play Scepovic and Guidetti together, with the emphasis on putting crosses in for them to attack.Who to leave out ? Either Stokes or Commons. However,Ronny will baffle us with his team selection(no offence Marko)as per usual.

Gerry

Reply to  holy sea

Completely agree, McGregor carried the team in the early games but needs a break. Keep his powder dry for Thursday and put Wakaso in to start; last seconds before going out on the pitch, whisper in his ear “make it impossible for me to drop you” and see if he can tear St Mirren (awful defence) a new one. If not then he had a chance and young McGregor can come back with a point to prove.
I’m no psychologist but surely these simple messages could motivate players?!?!

I could have sworn the last few diarys have bemoaned Ronny for never being happy with anything, not telling players they are doing something well, eroding their confidence and morale.

He is communicating his satisfaction with some aspects of our play and you tear him to shreds again – can’t have it both ways Ralph!
