Celtic Diary Tuesday September 2 : Failing to Plan, Planning to Fail.

“Monday is the last day, we are going to get the players in that we want and get to work with them.

“With the window closing we will know the group that we have to work with, we will bring in competition with new blood coming into the team, we will be stronger after the window than before.”

Ronny Deila, showing that there are still perhaps one or two issues with his command of the English language.

The transfer window is now closed, and Virgil van Dijk, who had at least one hand on the sill in an attempt to get out, will now be sporting a couple of band aids on his fingers. Lawwell , according to twitter, turned down at least two-and possibly three -clubs who had all offered over £10m.

So, at least he stuck to his guns on that one, but you still get the feeling he’ll wake up this morning with a hangover and tell his wife over breakfast that he’s sorry for coming in late, only had a couple, and hopes he didn’t do anything stupid last night….

Hah!

Wait until he puts his card in the ATM and notices a cash transfer of £2.4m !

He’ll have kittens!

Seriously, though, well done to Celtic for telling van Dijk he’s  not going anywhere, and its nice to see a club making a player honour at least some of the contract he was more than happy to sign twelve months ago.

Of course, had he been sold there may have been one or two pitchforks on the car park this evening, but credit where credits due. He’s still here, and now maybe the defence can settle a wee bit and play like they are all on the same team.

The manager also said that no-one else would be leaving.

Again, something must have been lost in the translation.

Teemu Pukki, Amido Balde , Holmbert Fridjonsson, Bahrudin Atajic Dylan McGeouch, and Jackson Irvine hired a seven seater and were dropped off at various clubs throughout Europe, except Atajic who is still driving  the motor and looking for a place to play.

Added to the loss of Tony Watt, Denny Johnstone  and Georgios Samaras, thats a hell of a lot of forwards leaving, and perhaps the guy who scouted most of them should be called in to the office this morning and asked what the hell he was thinking.

And then someone at the club could tell us. And he could also tell us why we could have been down to just two strikers. One of which doesn’t specialise in scoring goals.

Because, that  left us at tea time yesterday with just Leigh Griffiths, Anthony Stokes and a host of pending court appearances between the two.  You can already see the potential problem. Then Stefan Scepovic found out that he couldn’t sign for Getafe, which is the name of the Spanish club he was going to, and not the instructions on the letter he got from them while he was waiting to sign on the dotted line. He all of a sudden remembered that Celtic were his favourite Subbuteo team, and while he was growing up in Serbia he got a Celtic top from his Dad, who scored in the famous 5-4 game in 1989, and told him that one day he would like to play in front of that wonderful crowd,  and so on, and so forth…

Which was a stroke of luck for Lawwell, who by now was reduced to scouring the public parks looking for anyone who had a pair of boots and could kick a ball without falling on his arse.

Actually, though,he did rather better than that.  He remembered  John Guidetti, now in the last year of his contract at Manchester City, and so far down the pecking order there he has to carry a Panini album with his picture in it to convince the Security at their training ground that he actually plays for them. Guidetti was asked to come to Glasgow and join on a season long loan, a nifty way of avoiding buying him, and ensuring if he does well at least we won’t have to pay for him.

But then Manchester city didn’t get the paperwork done, and it all went wrong. Celtic will  appeal to UEFA , the deal was done at our  end, and it was the English club who wouldn’t sign the release papers, so the deal could go through anyway.

 Marvellous.

Whoop whoop.

Whoever is in charge of transfer strategy should himself be transferred this morning. With a boot firmly up his arse.

Had Scepovic not done another u-turn ( lets hope he’s equally mobile and flexible in the penalty area ), we would have lost six strikers and not replaced a single one of them.  We didn’t even put in an offer for the  purple sex toy being brandished at Sky Sports reporters during a live report would have at least  given us some penetration up front.

Perhaps we will hear all about the ones who got away, for the usual reasons, but the way the club has handled this opportunity to “come out of the window stronger than when we went in ” is inexcusable.

A couple of texts were intercepted, at the same time Jennifer Lawrence found out she should have stuck to a Polaroid, and they can be published today… The texts , not the Lawrence naked photos, which are a shameful breach of privacy, and too dark to really see anything. ( The body of the guy who released those pictures was found yesterday. He’d been high fived to death )

” You do know the transfer window shuts today FFS ? ”

“OMG Thought that was next week. My Bad. LOL ”

So, along with Tonev, whose mother keeps looking out of the window in their flat and saying that she is not going out there, and neither is any son of mine, Wakaso, Berget and Denaayar, thats your lot.

Forgive me if I feel a little uninspired.

I cannot be the only person who feels a tiny bit let down.

But, at least it means that Deila can work with what we have. And he’s got a week or two to revise the strategy thsat clearly isn’t working at the moment.

Kris Commons will get his new contract, on a reported £4,000 a week pay cut.

So, the clubs top scorer is rewarded with a drop in pay ?

Tell me again why Celtic find it difficult to tempt players to Glasgow ? Because it’s not just the weather.

Away from yesterdays fairly exciting but ultimately disappointing transfer kerfuffle, Celtic and St. Johnstone have both been fined for supporters waving Palestinian flags at recent European games.

A UEFA spokesman said: “Celtic and St Johnstone were sanctioned for infringement of Article 16 (2) (e).”

The UEFA Disciplinary Regulations on Order and Security states: “All associations and clubs are liable for the following inappropriate behaviour on the part of their supporters and may be subject to disciplinary measures and directives.

“The use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious or provocative nature will not be tolerated.”

Yesterday a St Johnstone spokesman said: “We’ve been fined 18,000 euros for the display of a Palestinian flag and pro-Palestine chanting at our game with Spartak Trnava by UEFA.

“Obviously it’s disappointing that this has happened but we need to see what the actual case is before commenting further.”

A Celtic spokesman said: “We have asked UEFA for written reasons regarding this decision and at this stage would not be able to comment further.”

There have been comparisons made between Peter Lawwell and Bob Kelly in the way that they run the club. Kelly, of course, famously told UEFA that Celtic would not play a match as a protest to the Soviet invasion of Hungary.

He had principles, and Lawwell should tell UEFA to stick it as well. Perhaps even withdraw from the Europa League and show the world that at least one club still has the balls to stick to its principles…

Especially as Ajax have yet to be fined for their display of the Israeli flag in at one of their games.

And they seemed to have missed this one, from Barcelona fans. Although I don’t know what game that is from, and if it’s not a UEFA tournament, then it doesn’t count. but at least it means I don’t have to reproduce the Israeli flag to make a point.

By the way, if you fancy buying a football club, theres one going cheap, according to the Herald…

Thanks to Angela Haggerty on twitter for drawing our attention to this fabulous money making opportunity.

Yesterday, we showed a picture of the Centenary Dinner , taken back in the days when the club was so skint we didn’t even have a colour camera.

Things are better now, but we don’t have too many players worth photographing.

Lisbon Lion on twitter posted this photo. what game is being referred to ?

Fed up with the negativity.I am going to be positive.Look at the players we can bring in to give us an attacking verve.Pace and Power. We’ve got Broony,Forrest,Tonev,Wakaso and
Scepovic.Why is everybody complaining ?
All we need now is a MANAGER to galvanise these players.
Then watch us go !!

Getting fed up with the negativity too.

We didn’t make the Champions League – so what??? We have a new manager; none of our other “new” managers were too hot first time around either when it came to Champions League qualification. Give the man a break (Deila) – he’s clearly trying to set us on a differnt path in terms of how we play the game. Whether this will be successful or not is way too early to say. If the thing is still sh1t by mid-November or December, then fine, get on his back, criticise the sh1t out of him, call on Lawwell to fire him. We’ll still have lots of time to win the league by then anyway. So fck it, get behind him at this point in time. This time next year, if he’s still there and hasn’t negotiated qualifying, trust me, I’ll be the most negative one here. But in the meantime, I’d like to see him given a chance.

Re Lawwell – he deserves a bit of a break too. Sure he hasn’t done everything right. Or John Park for that matter. But they are not mis-managing the club in my opinion; PL is doing as good a job as anyone I see in any other club. We wont (no more than with St Fergus) recognise this until he’s gone and some proper charlatan is there in his place. He is managing us through a very difficult period of time, managing us in the context of where we actually are today. Not where we were in the 1960’s, not where we want to be (some other league). Supporters criticize when we sign a Pukki or a Balde and it doesn’t work out. Then they criticize when we sign loan players before committing to signing them (hopefully) on a full time basis. We can’t have it both ways.

Finally, whether Ronnie works out or not, I would take him all day long in place of a Roy Keane or some other such type who has been suckled at the teet of the English premiership where the only approach to fitba seems to be buy your way to success. That is what Keane would have tried and he would have failed.

We are not in the CL for 2014; that does not mean all is not well at our club. All is not brilliant either obviously but fck sake folks surely it is time to have a wee bit more positivity and have a wee bit more trust in those at the top. They have successfully avoided us going down the Hun route (and had they listened to us all post Seville with our Buy Buy Buy mentality we could easily have ended up like our former rivals). We are writing off players before they have even pulled on a Celtic shirt and buying into the absolute bullsh1t that is being sprouted by so called “experts” on Clyde and elsewhere that we are in crisis!!!

Anyone who tells you this is the worst Celtic ever, never followed us in the 1990’s and is talking pure sh1te.

A cynic would say it suits their agenda to portray things that way to deflect from what’s going on elsewhere. We might well be in crisis in a few months if our manager doesn’t work out or the players turn out to be sh1t or Lawwell sells CP or Lennoxtown or whatever. But not now. So just give the thing a chance at least

For the first time in my life I have kept my opinions to myself simply because emotions have run riot in a nuclear explosion of confusion and contradiction over the last few weeks. Anger and frustration are, to say the least, poor premises from which to logically discuss a thesis. So, I have zipped my lips and bit my tongue regarding events at Celtic over the last few weeks till my eyes watered, my gut ached and my heart sank to a new depth. But I have to at least whisper a few lines of approval for your composed and balanced propositions. Some faith, some calm and some commitment at long last.

I followed us in the 90s(80s, 70s and 60s) and we are at least as bad. Find it strange we all now saying “ach well, it might be not so bad.” The benchmark is not the rocky road the huns took…

Only thing Forrest brings is plasters and pulled hamstring, he should have been the first out the door, money wasted on wages and physio bills could have paid for champagne for the directors box for a few games!

Well the handling of this transfer window just proves that we are a shambles on and off the park, between along list of injuries, pumping 5 attacking players, ( Mostly pish all the same,) and bringing in the likes of Berget then I believe LAWELL and the scouting team have had a ” RONNY” that’s short for nightmare, the team May well finally click into gear but I seriously doubt it, I’m afraid Ronny is taking the heat off of Fat Salary down in govan at the moment with being the most inept manager of the month.. HAIL HAIL, TRY KTF+

Let’s get it sorted these new players that have still to play, might well do it for us and we’ve still got Broony to come back pretty soon, they might well click into place, we’ll just wast and see.

I’m still waiting to see Boerittger given a chance to be honest. 15-20 minutes max a game (which he hasn’t shone in to be fair) is a bit limited to draw a conclusion; give the man six starts and if he is inept in those games at least we’ll all know. But if you offered me Berget or Boerittger to start the Aberdeen game I would take the latter.
I don’t know how much of the squad is away for internationals but these two weeks could be the key; work them in training, particularly defensive shape, but also light a fire under our forward players who have looked lethargic and flat footed so far this season, 6-1 game apart of course.

Boerittger must be one of the worst players in the first team he has had lots of chances, berget is the worst by far, we have brought in 2 wingers in tonev and wakaso, tellthe other two to get 2 f…k.

The debate over the efficacy of our forward line/attack will go on. However one point seems to be overlooked when we are looking at current team deficiencies and that is the “standing” invitation that the defence seems to be making on the field of play to every opposing team to enter through the back door on our left hand side. Any manager worth his salt is now able to exploit our weakness at left back due to Izzie’s lack of form and probably underlying positional and defensive weakness. I suppose we could play another good full back in that position…oops..er..we don’t have one.

UEfA are a joke fining two Scottish teams for fans showing the Palestinian flag, but ignoring other countries teams making political statements. Also the situation in Qatar does them no favours. We moan about the blazers in Scotland UEFA take the biscuit. We also should allow the team a few games to get things right. The test coming up is Aberdeen, Hearts and Salzbuurg, if he wins all three he is on the right road.
